Bulldog Winch Standard Off-Road Winch

The workhorse Standard Series winch is great for heavy-duty recoveries with your work truck, Jeep, or other off-road vehicle. This durable winch has thick side frames, a sealed contactor, and a 90' long wire rope. The clutch shifts easily from free-spool to engaged, and the load-holding brake prevents unintentional rope payout. The power unit can be remotely mounted and the clutch handle can be rotated so the winch fits easily into tight spaces. The winch also includes a hand-held remote with 12' lead so you can operate it at a safe distance.

Heavy-Duty, 6-Horsepower Motor

Bulldog Winch Standard Motor

This winch features a 6-horsepower, 12-volt DC motor with 12,000 lbs of line pull. This heavy-duty, series-wound motor is more powerful and more dependable than a permanent magnet motor, and it generates more torque and dispenses heat more efficiently when operating at high speeds. Built-in drain holes release the water created by motor heat to prevent internal moisture build-up. The motor is constructed of durable, corrosion-resistant materials including the powder coated housing, dacromet-plated motor tube, copper battery terminals, and zinc-plated steel hardware.

Power Unit with Sealed Contactor

Bulldog Winch Power Unit

The contactor - or solenoid - transmits power from the vehicle's battery to the winch motor. The 450-amp contactor - located inside the power unit - is sealed to meet IP67 specifications for water and weather resistance. The copper terminals and zinc-plated hardware are corrosion resistant.

Bulldog Winch Remote plugged into contactor

The rubber-sealed plug on top of the power unit houses the attachment port for the remote control.

Bulldog Winch Power Unit Mounted Over MotorBulldog Winch Power Unit Mounted Over Drum

There are brackets included that let you mount the power unit over the motor or over the drum. For convenience - or to free up space in a tight fit - you can also mount the power unit remotely with a special wiring kit (BDW20044 - sold separately).

Free-Spooling Clutch with Rotating Handle

Bulldog Winch Free-Spooling Clutch freespool

The free-spool clutch enables you to pull out the rope by hand. This saves battery power, prevents the brake from wearing down prematurely, reduces wear on the motor, and is much faster than waiting for the drum to unroll the rope. To release the clutch for free-spooling simply rotate the handle to the position indicated by the stick figure icon on the label. To reengage the clutch, rotate the handle back to the position indicated by the vehicle icon on the label.

The clutch is driven by a 3-stage planetary gear train. This provides more speed and torque than traditional worm gear drives or 1- or 2-stage planetary gear trains. It includes a ring gear that slides over the planetary gear set to lock it in or out of gear.

The gearbox can be rotated in 30-degree increments to 12 different positions to ensure that you can easily access the clutch handle no matter where the winch is mounted. This is great for custom and in-bumper applications, on vehicles with small engines where space is extremely limited, or when mounting the winch foot-forward with the clutch handle facing the radiator.

The gearbox is sealed to keep out moisture, and it has a black powder coat finish for rust resistance. The chrome-plated clutch handle is stylish and weather resistant.

Automatic, Load-Holding Mechanical Brake

Bulldog Winch Mechanical Brake

The automatic mechanical brake securely holds a load and prevents unintentional payout (or creep). A large spring coil contracts when the winch is in gear and the drum is winding in. When the winch stops, the load starts to pull and the spring expands to press against the spring chamber. The pressure of the spring on the wall of the spring chamber creates resistance to stop the drum from rotating outward. At maximum pressure the brake holds 100 percent of the load.

The friction created when the spring is pressing against the spring chamber creates heat. That heat is quickly dispersed away from the motor shaft and through the gearbox. This prevents potentially damaging heat buildup near the motor.

And since the brake is located inside the drum, the winch has a smaller profile and will fit into locations where space is limited such as between a vehicle's bumper and radiator.

Weather-Resistant Hand-Held Remote

Bulldog Winch Hand-Held Remote

The hand-held remote has a 12' lead and an in/out rocker switch so you can operate your winch at a distance. The rocker switch is sealed and water resistant so it won't get damaged in wet conditions. Simply plug the durable plastic remote into the power unit when you need to use it, and disconnect it to store it away when you aren't using it.

There is a wireless remote kit (BDW21056 - sold separately) that lets you operate the winch from up to 100' away. You can also operate the winch from the comfort of your vehicle with a dash-mounted in-cab control (BDW20064 - sold separately).

Wire Rope

Bulldog Winch Wire Rope

The wire rope is made of high-strength, aircraft-grade galvanized steel that is zinc-plated to resist abrasions and withstand harsh UV rays, chemicals, and extreme temperatures.

The rope winds around a drum that is made of solid steel. The mounting flanges are strong enough to resist bending or breaking if the rope wrap becomes uneven and excess stress is put on the drum.

A hand-saver strap is included to use in conjunction with work gloves (BDW20070 - sold separately) so that you can safely handle the rope and hook. A rock bag (BDW20048 - sold separately) is also recommended. The rock bag helps prevent a broken rope from snapping back by forcing it to the ground.

Bulldog Winch Steel Hook

The removable clevis hook is constructed of high-strength forged alloy steel that is heavy duty and rust resistant. It has a spring-loaded safety latch for quick fastening and removal. The hook attaches to the steel thimble on the end of the wire rope.

Roller Fairlead

Bulldog Winch Roller Fairlead

The roller fairlead has a thick steel frame with 4 steel rollers. The rollers reduce friction when you're pulling the rope in or paying it out, and they prevent the rope from becoming pinched when pulling at extreme angles. The rollers have a silver-zinc-plated finish that is tough and corrosion resistant. The fairlead installs with zinc-plated hardware.

Note: The roller fairlead does not mount directly to the winch - it typically attaches to tabs on the winch mounting plate (sold separately). Most aftermarket mounts include these tabs.

Rugged Construction

Bulldog Winch Winch Body

The Standard Series winch is constructed of strong, durable materials that are able to withstand any weather condition or terrain. The vented motor and sealed gearbox are made of corrosion-resistant powder coated steel. The contactor is sealed to keep water out, and the power unit is constructed of heavy-duty yet lightweight plastic that makes it ideal for mounting in remote locations. The steel tie bars and side frame drum supports help to create a strong and rigid winch body.

Installation

You will need a suitable mounting location to install the winch on the front of your vehicle. Winch mounts are built into many aftermarket bumpers and grille guards. Alternatively, you can install a universal front-mount plate (BDW20008 - sold separately) to create a mounting point for both your winch and fairlead.

If you are mounting the winch on your bumper or grille guard, you can use the included wiring to connect the winch to your vehicle's battery. Quick connects (BDW20133 - sold separately) are available to make removing and re-installing the winch easy. If you are mounting the winch at the back of your vehicle or on a trailer, you may need an additional 20' long wiring kit (BDW20206 - sold separately) or a 24' long wiring kit (BDW20207 - sold separately) for extended cabs and long beds.

Winch Line Pull Capacity

Layers of RopeCapacity (lbs)Total Rope on Drum (ft)
1st Layer12,00017
2nd Layer9,21041
3rd Layer8,03071
4th Layer6,89490

The line pull capacity of your winch is determined by the maximum load your winch can pull with a single layer of rope on the drum. As more layers of rope are wound onto the drum, pulling the same load requires more force, leading to a loss in winching power. With a 2nd layer of rope around the drum, your line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 14 percent. With 3 layers on the drum, the line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 23 percent, and with 4 layers on the drum it is reduced by approximately 35 percent.

Note: It is recommended that you begin any line pull with a minimum of 5 wraps and a maximum of 2 layers of rope on the drum.

Vehicle Recovery and Winch Capacity

To select the appropriate off-road/recovery winch for your application, determine your gross vehicle weight. The GVW is the stand-alone weight of your vehicle plus the weight of any items in and on the vehicle. Once you have determined the GVW of your vehicle, choose a winch with a capacity that is 1-1/2 times your GVW. Using that formula, this winch - with a 12,000-pound capacity - will work for vehicles with an approximate GVW of 8,000 pounds.

Rolling Load Winch Capacity

Percent InclineRolling Load Capacity (lbs)

10 (6)60,240

30 (17)31,320
50 (26)22,320
70 (35)18.360
100 (45)15,480
rolling load

To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the line pull capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.

The multiplication factors shown in the chart, right, include a 10-percent rolling friction factor.

Note: A 5-percent - or 3-degree - incline is a 1/2' rise over a 10' distance. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

Double-Line Pulling

Double-Line Pulling

Increase the pulling capacity of your winch by doubling up the rope with a pulley block (BDW20028 - sold separately). Secure the pulley block to a recovery strap (BDW20031 - sold separately) with a bow shackle (BDW20020 - sold separately) to provide a strong anchor for your double-line pull. Or use the Bulldog Winch 8-piece rigging kit (BDW20075 - sold separately) that includes everything you need for heavy-duty recovery. Using double-line operation will approximately double your winch's pulling capacity

Video Transcript for Review of Bulldog Winch Electric Winch - Truck Winch - Recovery Winch - BDW10043

Today we'll be taking a look at the Bulldog winch Standard Series off-road winch, with a 12,000 pound capacity. This is going to be a great heavy-duty winch for those times when we're off-road. We need to get ourselves unstuck from some kind of situation. Whether that's when we're rock climbing, or just got our axle hung up somewhere, or we're stuck in the mud, or we just need to get out of a ditch, this helps us to do that. The nice thing about that is that you can do this all on your own, you don't have to have an extra vehicle come and meet you out where you are. You can just hook up your winch, get yourself out of that stuck position, and get back to enjoying your day and your adventure. Now with that 12,000 pound capacity, that is going to be the static load that this can handle.

This is really meant to work for vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight up to 8,000 pounds. That's going to be the max that this can handle in a dynamic pulling situation, so keep that number in mind. Of course, whenever you're winching, you have some options available, as far as increasing your capabilities with your winch, if you use a pulley block or a rigging system. Those are sold separately here at etrailer.com, if you want to pick those up to maximize that you get out of your Bulldog winch. But on its own, it will have that 8,000 pound capacity.Whenever you're on an incline or maybe you're stuck in some mire, that's also going to increase the resistance to that line pull, and you'll need a little bit more strength out of your winch.

So just keep all those numbers in mind. Be very safe whenever you're winching. You never want to cause any injury to yourself, or to your vehicle, or anybody else that's around. You want to pick a good location to winch to. Use a recovery strap or a good anchor point on your vehicle, if you're doing a double pull. We've got a lot of resources here at etrailer.com, if you have any questions on how to do proper winch rigging and all those kind of things.

Now as far as our Bulldog winch, this is going to a 6-hp series-wound motor, so we're going to have a nice fast, efficient, safe line pull out of this. We can also have our free-spool option with this knob here. Just turn that, and that will allow you to run that line out. This drum can be rotated 360 degrees, so you can get that handle mounted up where it needs to be, to make it easy to access. We'll also have our rollers to reduce any friction as we're pulling that line out, or as it's coming in. It also eliminates any issues with it getting pinched as it's going at an extreme angle, if you have to do it that way.

We'll have our sealed contactor here. This is sealed with an ingress rating of six to seven, so that pretty much means it's impervious to dust and that it's also submersible up a meter for 30 minutes. That's what that IP67 rating means, that it's been tested for those specifications, to make sure that it will be able to withstand being out in the elements, out in the mud, and we're not going to cause any damage to our contactor.Coming off of that we'll have all our wiring to get connected up to our battery. You want to make sure that whenever you're mounting this up that you have a battery that's going to be up to standard with this. The recommended battery size for maximum power with this winch is 650 CCA, so you want to make sure that your battery is able to withstand that, just to be sure that you have full capacity out of your winch. We got our contactor, our hardware. These two little brackets are an optional component. It comes with the winch, but this let's you mount your contactor in a couple of different places. We can mount it off to the side, above our motor here. Or we can mount it up above the spool, so we have a couple of different mounting options for that contactor. That's what those brackets are for. That would be to mount it off to the side here. We'll get some additional cable to make our connections, our forged safety clevis hook, and then a strap to go on the end of that to make that easier to run out, and our 12' cable on our remote, so we can operate our winch from a safe distance, run out that line, run it back in. It plugs right into the winch. Now you can switch this out for a wireless remote. That is, again, sold separately. The part number for the wireless remote will be BDW20156. You'll find that right here at etrailer.com and that way you can not have to worry about that cable going across and doing damage, or having to get tangled up in more wires. That being said though, we do have 12' of cable. Again, you can stand back at a safe distance, winch up your Jeep, your ATV, whatever you're using this on, and then get back out on the trail.A couple of other things that I can get to go with this, like I mentioned before, you can get a pulley and a block system. You can also get a universale mounting plate to go with this. Our fairlead doesn't mount directly to the winch. It does need a mounting plate, and it will have some tabs that come up for that lead that fairlead will actually mount onto. The universal mounting plate and the hardware to go with it, those part numbers will be BDW20291, that's the mounting plate itself, and then BDW20297 would be the hardware to go with it. You can also get a hitch mounted bracket. That part number would be BDW20011, and that's just going to be a hitch mounted plate that can plug right into your 2" hitch, and mount your winch up to that.Customers really like the Bulldog winch. It's a very sturdy winch to handle just about anything we can throw at it. We'll have our inaudible 00:05:56 there, it gives it a nice sturdy base, and it helps to, again, get you unstuck from any kind of situation that you might find yourself in. As far as dimensions, let's go over those for a minute. Our winch measures from end to end, about 21-3/4" long, and then about 6-5/16" wide. Then from the bottom to the top of that handle, it's about 8-5/8" tall, or just over 8-1/2" tall. The drum diameter is 2-1/2". Then it measures 8-13/16" long, so just about 8-3/4".If we flip over the winch, we can get a look at the mounting holes on the bottom. The pattern there for mounting up our four bolts is 10" by 4-1/2", which is pretty standard. Flip this back over, we'll have our wire rope that's already installed here. The rope is going to measure 90' long and have a 3/8" diameter or 9.5mm diameter. The distance for the mounting holes on our roller fairlead, about 10" apart from center to center there. The winch weighs 90 pounds, and that's with the wire rope installed. The length of battery lead that we'll get with this is 6' long. That's the same for this other bundle here. That is a two gauge wire. This also has an automatic mechanical brake, so whenever we're rolling it out and we still have a load on there, it is going to automatically engage and hold 100% of that load. It's going to reduce any kind of winch creep, so it's not going to creep out at all for you. The duty cycle for this is two minute on, 15 minutes off, so if our fuse happens to, or our relay happens to blow, we'll have 15 minutes before it comes back on. Our gear ratio is 265 to 1.The line pull at zero pounds has a power draw of 65 amps and a line speed of 21.3 FPM. The line pull at 12,000 pounds has a power draw of 400 amps and a line speed of 4.4 FPM. It has a 12-volt DC motor, and again works for a vehicle recovery capacity of 8,000 pounds, with that 12,000 pound static load rating, with just a single layer of wire rope around the drum. The recommended battery size again for maximum power, 650 CCA, and it does come with a two year limited warranty from Bulldog winch. That's going to do it for our look at the Bulldog winch Standard Series off-road winch.
