BDW10004 Utility Winch

This versatile, standard-duty utility winch lets you pull cars, trucks, and other objects from nearly any stable surface. You can use it to pull vehicles onto your trailer, pull logs or deer into the back of your truck, or pull vehicles, engines, and other objects into your garage. The winch can be powered from your vehicle's battery, or it can be powered from a standalone battery if you are using it on trailer or in a workshop. It includes an 85' wire rope so you can pull from a greater distance when compared with standard trailer winches, a power unit that can be remotely mounted, and a free-spooling clutch for easy rope payout.

Standard-Duty, 1.87-Horsepower Motor

Bulldog Winch Utility Winch Motor

This winch features a 1.87-horsepower, 12-volt DC motor with 6,000 lbs of line pull. The permanent magnet motor has the same pull as a series-wound motor of comparable size but is lighter and uses less current. Built-in drain holes release the water created by motor heat to prevent internal moisture build-up. The motor is constructed of durable, corrosion-resistant materials including the powder coated housing, copper battery terminals, and zinc-plated steel hardware.

Power Unit with Dual Solenoids

BDW Power Unit and Solenoid

There are dual 350-amp solenoids that transmit power from the vehicle or trailer battery to the winch motor. One solenoid powers inward rotation of the rope drum, the other solenoid powers outward rotation of the rope drum. The solenoids - located inside the power unit - are sealed to meet IP67 specifications for water and weather resistance. The motor is constructed of durable, corrosion-resistant materials including the powder coated housing, copper battery terminals, and zinc-plated steel hardware.

The power unit mounts on the tie bars over the rope drum. For convenience - or to free up space in a tight fit - you can also mount the power unit remotely with a special wiring kit (BDW20132 - sold separately).

Remote plugged into power unit

There is a rubber-sealed, weatherproof attachment port on the power unit for the remote control. An integrated rubber cap lets you cover the port when it's not in use.

Free-Spooling Clutch with Rotating Handle

BDW Free-Spooling Clutch freespool

This winch has a free-spool clutch that enables you to pull out the rope by hand. This saves battery power, prevents the brake from wearing down prematurely, reduces wear on the motor, and is much faster than waiting for the drum to unroll the rope. To release the clutch for free-spooling simply rotate the handle to the position indicated by the stick figure icon on the label. To reengage the clutch, rotate the handle back to the position indicated by the vehicle icon on the label.

The clutch is driven by a 3-stage planetary gear train. This provides more speed than traditional worm gear drives and 1- or 2-stage planetary gear trains.

The gearbox can be rotated in 30-degree increments to 12 different positions to ensure that you can easily access the clutch handle no matter where the winch is mounted. This is great for custom applications, or on trailers or trucks where space is extremely limited.

The gearbox is sealed to keep out moisture, and it has a black powder coat finish for rust resistance. The chrome-plated clutch handle is stylish and weather resistant.

Automatic, Load-Holding Mechanical Brake

BDW Mechanical Brake

The automatic mechanical brake securely holds a load and prevents unintentional payout (or creep). A large spring coil contracts when the winch is in gear and the drum is winding in. When the winch stops, the load starts to pull and the spring expands to press against the spring chamber. The pressure of the spring on the wall of the spring chamber creates resistance to stop the drum from rotating outward. At maximum pressure the brake holds 100 percent of the load.

The friction created when the brake pads press against the drum generates heat. The steel tube drum is designed to disperse this heat across its entire surface. This prevents potentially damaging heat buildup near the motor.

Weather-Resistant Hand-Held Remote

BDW Handheld remote with integrated switch

The hand-held remote has a 12' lead and an in/out rocker switch that lets you control the winch at a safe distance. The rocker switch is sealed and water resistant so it won't get damaged in wet conditions. Simply plug the durable plastic remote into the power unit when you need to use it, and disconnect it to store it away when you aren't using it.

There is a wireless remote kit (BDW21056 - sold separately) that lets you control the winch from up to 100' away.

Wire Rope

BDW Wire Rope

The wire rope is made of high-strength, aircraft-grade galvanized steel that is zinc-plated to resist abrasions and withstand harsh UV rays, chemicals, and extreme temperatures.

The rope winds around a solid steel drum. The mounting flanges are strong enough to resist bending or breaking if the rope wrap becomes uneven and excess stress is put on the drum.

A hand-saver strap is included to use in conjunction with work gloves (BDW20070 - sold separately) so that you can safely handle the rope and hook. A rock bag (BDW20048 - sold separately) is also recommended. The rock bag helps prevent a broken rope from snapping back by forcing it to the ground.

Steel Hook

The removable clevis hook is made of forged alloy steel that is heavy duty and rust resistant. It has a spring-loaded safety latch for quick fastening and removal. The hook attaches to the steel thimble on the end of the wire rope.

Roller Fairlead

Bulldog Winch Roller Fairlead

The roller fairlead has a thick steel frame with 4 steel rollers. The rollers reduce friction when you're pulling the rope in or paying it out, and they prevent the rope from becoming pinched when pulling at extreme angles. The rollers have a silver-zinc-plated finish that is tough and corrosion resistant. The fairlead installs with zinc-plated hardware.

Note: The roller fairlead does not mount directly to the winch - it typically attaches to tabs on the winch mounting plate (sold separately). Bulldog Winch mounting plates - as well as most other aftermarket mounts - include these tabs.

Rugged Construction

BDW Winch Body

The winch is constructed of strong, durable materials that are able to withstand any weather condition or terrain. The motor housing and gearbox are made of corrosion-resistant powder coated steel. The solenoids are sealed to keep water out, and the power unit is made of heavy-duty yet lightweight plastic. The steel tie bars and side frame drum supports help to create a strong and rigid winch body.

Installation

This versatile winch can be mounted to your trailer in several different ways. You can bolt the winch and fairlead to a mounting plate using the included hardware, then bolt the mounting plate to your trailer. This is the easiest method and does not require welding, but it does leave a footprint on your deck. You can mount the plate to the front rail of your trailer. This method elevates the winch so it's easy to reach and frees up valuable space on your deck, but will require welding the plate to the rail. You can also weld the plate to the front frame of the trailer so that the winch sits at at deck level without using up space on the deck.

You can mount the winch to your truck bed, workshop floor, or any other stable surface. Simply mount the winch and fairlead to a mounting plate (sold separately) then bolt the plate to the desired surface.

The included wiring lets you connect the winch to your vehicle's battery. You can also connect it to a trailer battery or a standalone battery for workshop installations. Quick connects (BDW20047 - sold separately) are available to make removing and re-installing the winch easy.

Winch Line Pull Capacity

Layers of RopeCapacity (lbs)Total Rope on Drum (ft)

2nd Layer4,99029
3rd Layer4,28048
4th Layer3,73069
5th Layer3,3108547

The line pull capacity of your winch is determined by the maximum load your winch can pull with a single layer of rope on the drum. As more layers of rope are wound onto the drum, pulling the same load requires more force, leading to a loss in winching power. With a 2nd layer of rope around the drum, your line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 14 percent. With 3 layers on the drum, the line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 23 percent, and with 4 layers on the drum it is reduced by approximately 35 percent.

Note: It is recommended that you begin any line pull with a minimum of 5 wraps and a maximum of 2 layers of rope on the drum.

rolling load

To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the line pull capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.

The multiplication factors shown in the chart, right, include a 10-percent rolling friction factor.

Note: A 5-percent - or 3-degree - incline is a 1/2' rise over a 10' distance. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

Double-Line Pulling

Double-Line Pulling

Increase the pulling capacity of your winch by doubling up the rope with a pulley block (BDW20004 - sold separately). Secure the pulley block to the vehicle being pulled with a bow shackle (BDW20006 - sold separately) to provide a strong anchor for your double-line pull. Using double-line operation will approximately double your winch's pulling capacity.

Video Transcript for Bulldog Winch Electric Winch - Truck Winch - BDW10004 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number BDW10004. This is the Bulldog Self-Recovery Winch with a 6,000 pound capacity. It's going to contain a 12 volt DC, 1.87 horsepower permanent magnet motor. It's going to deliver maximum performance. It's going to help power the load in and out. It's also going to have the three-stage planetary gear train.

It's going to have the heavy duty steel housing and frame, and when it comes with the brake unit, it's going to be an automatic load-holding brake. Now this right here is going to be our power unit for mounting into tight spaces. They do make it removable. Simply take the brackets, place them over the top two bars here. It's going to have some set screws on the back. You just tighten those up and it's going to secure it to the top of the winch.

Here on this side, it's going to have a plug. This is going to allow you to connect the hand-held remote. The hand-held remote is going to let you operate the winch from a safe distance. From the mounting location, it's going to give you a 12-foot lead. Nice grip on there.

You can control the load in or out. It's got indicators on there to help you and assist you with that. You got the wires exposed here out of the back of the power unit. The short red wire and the short black wire is going to connect to the terminals here on the winch. Everything is color-coded for an easy installation.

Then you're going to have the longer wires. These are going to give you plenty of wire to run to your battery. That way you can power your winch. I'll go ahead and show you one other thing before we install the power unit on top of here. I just want to show you the mounting locations here on the winch. You're going to have four bolt holes here on the base of the winch. Measuring the center distance apart from one another, center on center going this direction, this is going to give us a measurement of about 6.5 inches, six and a half inches. Measuring this direction, center on center, is going to be four and a half inches. All the necessary hardware and wiring for a complete installation is included. So the power unit just slips over the top here, and then all we have to do is tighten down the set screws on the back to get that secured. So that's nice that it fits right there on top of the winch. Here on this side, it's going to be the free spool clutch knob for a quick rope deployment. It's going to have the disengage setting and the engage setting. All you got to do is rotate that back and forth to either setting. When it comes to the cable, you're going to have a forged steel hook with the safety latch mechanism on there to prevent accidental disconnecting. You're going to have the hand saver strap. This hook system can be easily removed. It's held on there with a clevis pin, and here at the point of rotating, they put a nice steel plate on the bottom side of that cable. That's going to protect the life of the cable, making sure that it stands up well to all the movement and that it doesn't fray or anything, so that's a great feature to have as well. Now, the cable is going to measure 85 feet in length. It's going to give us a diameter of 9/32s of an inch. This right here is going to be the four-way roller fair lead. This is going to protect the wire rope from damage by reducing strain and rubbing. The wire would come right through this center section here and all of these spin freely. That way it's going to assist the cable going in and out of the winch. Now, the fair lead is designed to attach to a base plate or mounting channel. Those are going to be sold separately. The power unit is going to contain double 350 amp solenoids. Again, everything is color-coded and you're going to get detailed instructions that are going to walk you through the installation process, some tips on owning a winch and safety and maintenance as well. Now the rate of line pull. the capacity of the winch is 6,000 pounds. The line pull at zero pounds is going to have a power draw of 30 amps with a line speed of 10 feet per minute. Line pull at max capacity, 6,000 pounds, is a power draw of 320 amps with a line speed of 2.9 feet per minute. Gear ratio is 307 to one. The winch is going to measure 16.9 inches long by 6.3 inches wide by 8.6 inches tall. Drum dimensions, that's going to give us a diameter of two and a half inches with a length of 5.26 inches. The winch itself is going to weigh about 52 pounds and again, you can see everything it comes with, the remote, all hardware, wiring, the fair lead, cable, hook, hand saver strap, winch, power, all the wiring, and that's a great set up to have. That's going to do it for our review of part number BDW10004. This is the Bulldog Self-Recovery Winch, rated at 6,000 pounds. .
