Bulldog Winch Standard Off-Road Winch

The workhorse Standard Series winch is great for heavy-duty recoveries with your work truck, Jeep, or other off-road vehicle. This durable winch has thick side frames, a sealed contactor, and a 100' long synthetic rope. The clutch shifts easily from free-spool to engaged, and the load-holding brake prevents unintentional rope payout. The power unit can be remotely mounted and the clutch handle can be rotated so the winch fits easily into tight spaces. The winch also includes a hand-held remote with 12' lead so you can operate it at a safe distance.

Heavy-Duty, 6-Horsepower Motor

Bulldog Winch Standard Motor

This winch features a 6-horsepower, 12-volt DC motor with 12,000 lbs of line pull. This heavy-duty, series-wound motor is more powerful and more dependable than a permanent magnet motor, and it generates more torque and dispenses heat more efficiently when operating at high speeds. Built-in drain holes release the water created by motor heat to prevent internal moisture build-up. The motor is constructed of durable, corrosion-resistant materials including the powder coated housing, dacromet-plated motor tube, copper battery terminals, and zinc-plated steel hardware.

Power Unit with Sealed Contactor

Bulldog Winch Power Unit

The contactor - or solenoid - transmits power from the vehicle's battery to the winch motor. The 450-amp contactor - located inside the power unit - is sealed to meet IP67 specifications for water and weather resistance. The copper terminals and zinc-plated hardware are corrosion resistant.

Bulldog Winch Remote plugged into contactor

The rubber-sealed plug on top of the power unit houses the attachment port for the remote control.

Bulldog Winch Power Unit Mounted Over MotorBulldog Winch Power Unit Mounted Over Drum

There are brackets included that let you mount the power unit over the motor or over the drum. For convenience - or to free up space in a tight fit - you can also mount the power unit remotely with a special wiring kit (BDW20044 - sold separately).

Free-Spooling Clutch with Rotating Handle

Bulldog Winch Free-Spooling Clutch freespool

The free-spool clutch enables you to pull out the rope by hand. This saves battery power, prevents the brake from wearing down prematurely, reduces wear on the motor, and is much faster than waiting for the drum to unroll the rope. To release the clutch for free-spooling simply rotate the handle to the position indicated by the stick figure icon on the label. To reengage the clutch, rotate the handle back to the position indicated by the vehicle icon on the label.

The clutch is driven by a 3-stage planetary gear train. This provides more speed and torque than traditional worm gear drives or 1- or 2-stage planetary gear trains. It includes a ring gear that slides over the planetary gear set to lock it in or out of gear.

The gearbox can be rotated in 30-degree increments to 12 different positions to ensure that you can easily access the clutch handle no matter where the winch is mounted. This is great for custom and in-bumper applications, on vehicles with small engines where space is extremely limited, or when mounting the winch foot-forward with the clutch handle facing the radiator.

The gearbox is sealed to keep out moisture, and it has a black powder coat finish for rust resistance. The chrome-plated clutch handle is stylish and weather resistant.

Automatic, Load-Holding Mechanical Brake

Bulldog Winch Mechanical Brake

The automatic mechanical brake securely holds a load and prevents unintentional payout (or creep). A large spring coil contracts when the winch is in gear and the drum is winding in. When the winch stops, the load starts to pull and the spring expands to press against the spring chamber. The pressure of the spring on the wall of the spring chamber creates resistance to stop the drum from rotating outward. At maximum pressure the brake holds 100 percent of the load.

The friction created when the spring is pressing against the spring chamber creates heat. That heat is quickly dispersed away from the motor shaft and through the gearbox. This prevents potentially damaging heat buildup near the motor.

And since the brake is located inside the drum, the winch has a smaller profile and will fit into locations where space is limited such as between a vehicle's bumper and radiator.

Weather-Resistant Hand-Held Remote

Bulldog Winch Hand-Held Remote

The hand-held remote has a 12' lead and an in/out rocker switch so you can operate your winch at a distance. The rocker switch is sealed and water resistant so it won't get damaged in wet conditions. Simply plug the durable plastic remote into the power unit when you need to use it, and disconnect it to store it away when you aren't using it.

There is a wireless remote kit (BDW21056 - sold separately) that lets you operate the winch from up to 100' away. You can also operate the winch from the comfort of your vehicle with a dash-mounted in-cab control (BDW20064 - sold separately).

Synthetic Rope

Bulldog Winch Synthetic Rope

The synthetic rope is made of HMPE fiber that is lightweight yet stronger than steel. This synthetic rope is safer to use than a steel rope because it generates less kinetic energy - and therefore less kickback - if a break occurs. It won't stretch - or creep - over time like steel rope can. And it's also less likely to fray and create sharp strands so it's easier to handle and easier to spool.

The rope winds around a drum that is made of solid steel. The mounting flanges are strong enough to resist bending or breaking if the rope wrap becomes uneven and excess stress is put on the drum.

A 6' woven polyester protective sleeve at the hook end of the rope provides extra protection. A hand-saver strap is also included to use in conjunction with work gloves (BDW20070 - sold separately) so that you can safely handle the rope and hook.

Bulldog Winch Red Hook

The hook is made of premium-grade chrome molybdenum (chromoly) that is heavy duty and rust resistant. The hook is attached to a steel thimble on the end of the synthetic rope.

Aluminum Hawse Fairlead

Bulldog Winch Hawse Fairlead

The CNC machine billet aluminum hawse fairlead is designed to be used with synthetic rope. The 3/4" thick fairlead has a clear anodized finish that resists corrosion, and it installs with zinc-plated hardware. The fairlead hole is rounded on the outside to reduce friction on the rope when you're pulling it in and out. This helps reduce wear on the rope to keep it strong and functional.

Note: The hawse fairlead does not mount directly to the winch - it typically attaches to tabs on the winch mounting plate (sold separately). Most aftermarket mounts include these tabs.

Rugged Construction

Bulldog Winch Winch Body

The Standard Series winch is constructed of strong, durable materials that are able to withstand any weather condition or terrain. The vented motor and sealed gearbox are made of corrosion-resistant powder coated steel. The contactor is sealed to keep water out, and the power unit is constructed of heavy-duty yet lightweight plastic that makes it ideal for mounting in remote locations. The steel tie bars and side frame drum supports help to create a strong and rigid winch body.

Installation

You will need a suitable mounting location to install the winch on the front of your vehicle. Winch mounts are built into many aftermarket bumpers and grille guards. Alternatively, you can install a universal front-mount plate (BDW20008 - sold separately) to create a mounting point for both your winch and fairlead.

If you are mounting the winch on your bumper or grille guard, you can use the included wiring to connect the winch to your vehicle's battery. Quick connects (BDW20133 - sold separately) are available to make removing and re-installing the winch easy. If you are mounting the winch at the back of your vehicle or on a trailer, you may need an additional 20' long wiring kit (BDW20206 - sold separately) or a 24' long wiring kit (BDW20207 - sold separately) for extended cabs and long beds.

Winch Line Pull Capacity

Layers of RopeCapacity (lbs)Total Rope on Drum (ft)
1st Layer12,00017
2nd Layer9,21041
3rd Layer8,03071
4th Layer6,89490

The line pull capacity of your winch is determined by the maximum load your winch can pull with a single layer of rope on the drum. As more layers of rope are wound onto the drum, pulling the same load requires more force, leading to a loss in winching power. With a 2nd layer of rope around the drum, your line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 14 percent. With 3 layers on the drum, the line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 23 percent, and with 4 layers on the drum it is reduced by approximately 35 percent.

Note: It is recommended that you begin any line pull with a minimum of 5 wraps and a maximum of 2 layers of rope on the drum.

Vehicle Recovery and Winch Capacity

To select the appropriate off-road/recovery winch for your application, determine your gross vehicle weight. The GVW is the stand-alone weight of your vehicle plus the weight of any items in and on the vehicle. Once you have determined the GVW of your vehicle, choose a winch with a capacity that is 1-1/2 times your GVW. Using that formula, this winch - with a 12,000-pound capacity - will work for vehicles with an approximate GVW of 8,000 pounds.

Rolling Load Winch Capacity

Percent InclineRolling Load Capacity (lbs)
Level Surface120,000
5 (3)80,040
10 (6)60,240
20 (11)40,800
30 (17)31,320
50 (26)22,320
70 (35)18.360
100 (45)15,480
Rolling Load

To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the line pull capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.

The multiplication factors shown in the chart, right, include a 10-percent rolling friction factor.

Note: A 5-percent - or 3-degree - incline is a 1/2' rise over a 10' distance. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

Double-Line Pulling

Double-Line Pulling

Increase the pulling capacity of your winch by doubling up the rope with a pulley block (BDW20028 - sold separately). Secure the pulley block to a recovery strap (BDW20031 - sold separately) with a bow shackle (BDW20020 - sold separately) to provide a strong anchor for your double-line pull. Or use the Bulldog Winch 8-piece rigging kit (BDW20075 - sold separately) that includes everything you need for heavy-duty recovery. Using double-line operation will approximately double your winch's pulling capacity

Video Transcript for All You Need to Know About the Bulldog Winch Standard Series Off-Road Winch

Hello everybody this is Jeff at eTrailer.com. Today we're going to take a look at this Bulldog Winch Standard Series Off-Road Winch. It uses the synthetic rope, a Hawse fairlead, and a 12,000 pound weight capacity. Now this is a Standard Series recovery winch that'll let you pull your stuck vehicle out of mud, snow, water, or a ditch, and even up steep inclines. This is perfect for work trucks, Jeeps, and other off-road vehicles. And it is designed for winching vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating up to 8,000 pounds. On this side is the 6-horsepower series wound motor, which will deliver powerful, fast, and safe line pulling. This motor is more powerful, more efficient, produces more torque than a permanent magnet motor and it does have drain holes that'll let the water escape to prevent any moisture buildup.

This winch uses an automatic mechanical brake, which will hold 100% of the load while minimizing winch creep. The power unit right here is included. Now this power unit includes the contactor, all in a plastic housing, all the electrical wiring. Now it does come with these brackets. These brackets will let you mount the unit either over the motor, like that, or over the drum just like that, whichever position you want. Now if neither one of those positions will work we do also sell, separately, a wiring kit which will let you remotely mount this power unit wherever you want.

That wiring kit is listed on this product page as a related product and it's part number BDW20132. Now this power unit includes a sealed 450 amp contactor, which will transmit power from your vehicle's battery to this winch motor. It is water and weather resistant to IP 67 specifications.I also wanted to show you it comes with this handheld remote right here. This handheld remote has a 12' lead that'll let you operate the winch from a nice safe distance. It has a weather-resistant switch, which will power the load in and out.

It's a toggle switch, so when you let it go it's off and then you push it it'll go in or out. This'll plug right into this power unit. I just wanted to show you right on the corner, if you pop open this rubber cap, it'll pop right off, and then there's your connection. All you have to do is line up your slots there, push it in, and once you push it in it'll automatically lock into place. Then you'll have your remote ready to use.

Then when you're done if you want to remove it you just push in on this lever, or button, right here and it'll pop right out. Simple as that. Then you can put this cover back on to protect your connection. Now they do also offer a wireless remote control. We sell that separately on our website. It's part number BDW20158. Let me go ahead and set this power unit back down here. Now on this side they use an all steel three-stage planetary gear train. The gear ratio is 265 to 1. This will provide increased drum speed and torque when compared with worm drives, and the one or two-stage planetary gear trains. It does use a free-spooling clutch to ensure fast rope payout, reduce wear on the motor, and you just operate that by your clutch handle. Right now it's in the engage position. It'll show you here that it's pointing this way, engage. So that means you can operate it with the remote. If you turn that clutch handle 180 degrees it'll be in the disengage, which means you can pull out as much rope as you need. Once you pull out as much as you need then just rotate that handle back into the engage position, and then you'll be able to operate it with the remote. The other nice feature on this, this gearbox right here can be rotated 360 degrees so that you can reach this clutch handle no matter where you mount the winch. So if you'd rather have this clutch handle up front here it can be rotated with the handle here. If you wanted it in the back you could rotate it that way. So you could put it wherever you prefer. The rope on this is a 3/8" diameter HMPE synthetic rope. This rope is as strong as steel but it's lightweight and safer to handle. This is 100 feet of rope. It also includes the nice steel hook here on the end, with the keeper. And even includes this nice nylon hand saver strap. Now the fairlead, and it's a nice heavy-duty steel Hawse fairlead. You can see the opening right here, where the rope comes through, it's a nice rounded hole all the way around, which helps prevent friction and damage to the rope. So if this is pulled at an angle, and it's running against the side here, it's rounded so it doesn't damage the rope. This has a nice clear-handed ice finish on it to help resist corrosion. Now this is all in a nice heavy-duty steel housing with the thick side frames, the tie bars, which create a nice strong winch body. It has a black powder coat finish, which is corrosion resistant. And the motor tube uses a Dacromet plated tube, which will resist internal corrosion.A few specs on this. Rated line pull with a single layer of synthetic rope around the drum is 12,000 pound static load. We mentioned the vehicle recovery capacity is 8,000 pounds. The motor on this is a 12 volt DC motor. The line pull at zero pounds, power draw will be 65 amps, line speed 21.3 feet per minute. The line pull at 12,000 pounds, the power draw will be 400 amps, and the line speed is 4.4 feet per minute. The battery wires here you can see that are included, these are 2 gauge wire size. The lead length's about 6'.Want to give you a few dimensions on this. The length of it, from one end to the other, is going to be right at about 21-3/4" long. Overall height on the whole unit is going to be about 8-5/8" tall. The width is going to be right about 6-5/16" wide. The weight on this, with the rope included, is around 64 pounds. It does come with a nice owner's manual instruction manual to describe how to make your connections, how it all operates, the mounting hardware for installing it.But that should do it for the review on this Bulldog Winch Standard Series Off-Road Winch with the synthetic rope, the Hawse fairlead, and a 12,000 pound weight capacity.

Used it mostly dragging logs around my property and one time to rescue a complete stranger who managed to run off the trail at the only place where it's not a good idea to leave the trail. No surprise, complete strangers have typically gotten more use out of my winches than i have. Very pleased so far.
Mounted 7800 pound trailer winch on my old jeep, wanted a narrow package that fit between the arms of the tow bar. Both winches drag both jeeps around marvelously!

by:

Pretty sweet winch going to mount this on a trailer and really liked how easy it was to make it wireless

by:

I installed this in my Aerovault Car Trailer to winch cars in and out of the trailer. As it turns out customer service at eTrailer is slow (takes days) and the manual that this is shipped with is terrible -- its not only way too generic but there is almost no information included despite the multiple pages of legal warnings. It's not that I couldn't figure out how to install the winch or operate it but when I looked at the wireless remote it would have been nice to know (a) is it a replaceable battery; or (b) does it charge when attached to the umbilical cord it comes with when it is in wired mode. 48 hours later still no response from etrailer but it is a holiday weekend. And if you go to Bulldog's own website there is no manual either. This winch is just another example of the small things that eliminate a perfect review. Notably, the etrailer review is interesting but never mentions a thing about how the wireless remote is powered and, as I learned, basically follows the ambigous manual -- the reviewer offers nothing extra. The good news is that the winch looks like a good device and hopefully it will last better than the Harbor Freight winch (total junk) it replaced.

by:

Installed it on my motorcycle trailer. Install was a piece of cake! Does what it is supposed to do. 2000LBS capacity works like a champ loading and unloading my bikes.

by:

Very heavy duty and a great deal from etrailer, thanks

by:

Great piece of equipment. Will have local company install on the flat-bed utility trailer which is used to transport riding mowers and an occasional golf cart to shops. Will need to purchase battery and waterproof enclosure.

by:

just got it mounted and wired! this 8000lb winch will get me out of the bog holes. worked perfectly first time I touched the remote. can't beat it. my hunting club members call when they bog down. they will be happy as I am.

by:

Thank you Lori. Everything went as planned. Very professional.
Was a pleasure talking to you

by:

First day working with the Bulldog Wench. It worked as advertised thus far without issue.. Unable to put it through proper trials due an inadequate wench plate. May have to fabricate one from 1/2" stock. The snatch blocks are first rate.

by:

I picked this winch from etrailer as it provided an incredible value at the time of purchase vs other option here and from other retailers. It ended up being way overkill for what I use it for, but I never have to worry about overloading it either. Went together well and mounted up like it should to the Bulldog receiver mount I got too (hitch plate welded/mounted on car hauler, winch is removable and not subject to road grim ever). Plan on years of service from this combination!

by:

Poor quality

by:

Awesome winch. I use it on my trailer for my business to winch equipment on and never lets me down.

by:

Worked well, only used them once but they worked as expected, plenty of power, as rated.

by:

Bolted to trailer that sits outside year round and never had an issue. Only down side is that I wish it was remote controlled or had a much longer cord. Would make it easier to load/unload by yourself. Overall I am very pleased with the construction and power.

by:

We also bought the Bulldog off-road winch mounting plate for my husband's 2017 Toyota Tacoma. Everything fit perfect and installation was easy.

by:

reasonably priced and quick delivery

by:

Faster than expected delivery, Thank you. Not yet sure about how I'll be using it. Interested in mounting and wiring information. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

by:

I like etrailer, They worker hard to get me what I wanted. The product worked and still functioned. It is too bad it takes a long time to get things because the messed up market place today. The shipping of everything I have bought for the last 6 months from all companies looks like it was dropped off the truck from 6 ft high.

by:

I purchased a Bulldog 8,000 LB winch. It showed up early even with free shipping. Kim P was the customer service rep I dealt with. She's definitely an asset for etrailer.
Etrailer's price was much cheaper than any other place I could find it...not to mention the free shipping!! Job well done.

by:

GREAT WINCH FOR THE PRICE-

by:

This winch is fantastic. Quick ship and great buy. etrailer never ceases to amaze me on their great deals.

by:

I bought two of these to pull a large 34’x100’ greenhouse. In tandem each were pulling at about 5-6000# of force to move the greenhouse. 100’. Worked great. No apparent durability issues and plenty of power, the price was right.

by:

very happy with the winch and mount, instructions were easily understood and the finished product was all it was said to be. will continue to deal with this business as they are professionals.

by:

A good winch not real heavy and can handle it quit easy

by:

only using it to move boat/pontoon lifts and docks. Works great, more than enough power. Easy set-up and no problems.
