Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located inside your rear cargo area, on both the driver's side and passenger's side. You will need to remove the cargo door and some interior paneling to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery and insert the provided fuse.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in your spare tire compartment.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Video Transcript for T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness Installation - 2012 Volvo XC60

Speaker 1: Today on our 2012 Volvo XC60, we'll be having a look at and installing the Tekonsha T1 vehicle wiring harness with four pole flat trailer connector, part number 118739. Here's what our wiring looks like installed. This four pole flat trailer harness gives us the basic lighting functions that are required by law, in order for us to safely and legally tow a trailer. Our white wire here provides our ground connection, which is necessary between our trailer and our XC60. The brown wire is our taillight and running light circuit. And on that wire, we have a total power output of 7.5 amps of power.

So if we we're towing a trailer that has incandescent lights, we'll be able to run quite a few of those without having any issues. If we have all LED lights on our trailer, not a problem. We can basically run as many as we want, since LED lights do draw significantly less power than incandescent lights. Now on our yellow wire here, this is our left turn signal and left brake light. Our green wire here, that's our right turn signal and right brake light. Now both of these are separate circuits and on those circuits we have a total power output of five amps per circuit in order to run our turn signals and our brake lights.

With only five amps, we should be able to run quite a few incandescent lights and as many LED lights as we want, and won't have any issues. One nice thing is we have this built on dust cover here to help protect it when it's not in use.Now this wiring harness is designed to be stored inside of our vehicle. But I always like to put a little bit of dielectric grease inside these connections before I put the dust cover on. That way when we hook up to your trailer, and if we're towing in the rain, we don't have to worry about moisture getting inside there and casing corrosion. We have an adequate length of wiring harness here, which hangs down right next to our hitch receiver is and we have plenty of slack in it.When we're not towing our trailer and we don't want the wiring outside, it resides inside.

Open your hatch on up and you can just store it inside this bin right here underneath your cargo cover. When you want to tow, open it up, drape it onto the side here. Just making sure you avoid your latch for your hatch and it'll close down against the weather stripping and be protected. All right to begin our install, we'll open up our rear hatch. Okay now we'll remove all of our floor coverings. Lift up on the driver's side and the passenger and it comes out.

We'll lift out our cover here as well. Now we'll pull back on the covers behind our taillights. Now we'll unplug our taillights. There's a gray tab right here. Push in on it, pull back on your connector. Do the same on the other side. So I've gone ahead and taken a pull wire here. And went through this smaller hole that's close to the carpet on our driver's side below the large hole behind the taillight. And then it comes out underneath our vehicle behind the bumper cover. We'll leave this in place for right now. We'll use this to pull through our power wire later. Now we'll take our T connector here, that has a yellow wire on it. Slide it underneath the panel. Just take our hand down through the hole, pull it on up. These are keyed, so they only match up one way. The male will go to the female end and vice versa. Once they click in place, you know you're okay. Now if we peel back this insulation right here and pull it up a little bit. We'll find an existing ground wire for our vehicle. We'll need to ground out our white wire to the vehicle's sheet metal. We can do that by using the self tapping screw but that would involve putting another hole in our vehicle. If you remove this bolt right here, which is a 10 millimeter. We can stick it through the ring terminal of our ground wire and reinstall it. Utilizing existing factory ground, which works properly.Okay now the black wire that comes off of our module, that's our power wire. We'll stick a provided yellow butt connector over that black wire and we'll crimp it on down. Now our spool of black wire, we'll strip back some insulation from one end. Stick that in the other end of the butt connector. And we'll crimp that down as well. Now from this point forward any wire that I have that is connected with a butt connector, I'm going to wrap an electrical tape. This will just help better protect the connection from any moisture or corrosion or dirt or debris, which could cause a poor connection or a short. Now the other end of our black wire, we'll stick behind the panel just like we did with our yellow connector. And we will tape it to our pull wire that I dropped down earlier. Now we'll pull this on out of the vehicle. Okay now we'll take our double sided tape, peel off on end. Apply it to the back side of our module. Push it down so it's nice and secure. Peel off the other end. And we'll just stick it down here on top of our foam. This will hold it in place, keep it from moving around and will hold it nice and securely out of the way. Now we'll run our wire up to the passenger's side, across our threshold here. Reach down behind the pocket, pull it on up. We'll make our connections. Now to help to secure our wire into place along our threshold. We take out these two eight millimeter bolts that we have. One on the passenger side, one on the driver's side. We can slide the wire up behind the threshold just like that. Reinstall the bolt. This will help conceal it and keep it out of the way, in case we ever need to pull our spare tire out. Now we'll go ahead and replace all of our interior panels the same way that we removed them. Here's where our power wire came down from behind our bumper. Making sure we avoided any moving parts or sources of heat such as the exhaust. Now the reason we're running this wire to the battery, is this will supply a constant 12 volt power to our module in the back of the vehicle. That way it isolates our taillight wiring from the vehicle's factory wiring. We went up and above our rear sub frame here. Got it secured with a zip tie there. Other one at the front of the sub frame to an unused exhaust hanger. This keeps it away from the exhaust. Comes down, got it zip tied up to an ABS wire here. Comes through our plastic piece here. Goes through this hole. Run it up and secure it with a couple zip ties along our brake lines to where our firewall starts. Now we'll drop down a pull wire and we'll attach it to the end of wire and bring it up in the engine compartment.Make sure we get all the slack out. I'll zip tie it to this wiring harness here. This will keep it away from any moving parts such as our steering column. Okay our battery's located underneath this cover right here now. We'll pull up on this tab here. There should be another one here. But ours is already broken off. Just lift it up. This here's our positive terminal for our battery. We need to get our wire into this area here. There's a grommet here where our battery cable passes through. You just take a screwdriver or a knife and can poke a hole in it and that will allow us to pass the wire through.Okay with it inside of our battery compartment now. Cut off our excess wire, strip back our insulation. Stick in our butt connector, crimp it down. This is our fuse holder here. It's one continuous loop of wire. We'll cut it right in the middle. Now we have two separate ends. So we'll strip back our insulation from both ends. One end will go into our butt connector, doesn't matter which end. The other end we'll place a ring terminal onto. Now we need to attach this to the positive side of our battery terminal. Which is could be either one of these three nuts. I'm going to use this one right here. It's a 13 millimeter. Okay we'll slide our ring terminal over that stud.Reinstall the nut that we removed. I'll snug it back down. With that tight and secure, it's now safe for us to install the 15 amp fuse in our fuse holder. Put the dust cover back on. Tuck it down inside our battery box and reinstall the lid. Now we'll test our wiring. We're using a four pole flat tester, it's part number I26 on our website. The reason we're using this versus just hooking it up to our trailer, is because if our trailer had a short on it or a burned out light bulb. We wouldn't be able to tell if our wiring's working properly on our vehicle. All right we have our headlights on. Our vehicle's equipped with daytime running lights, so the taillights are always on. So we can't actually show you turning it on but they are working properly. Now we'll do a left turn signal. That's working. Our right turn signal. That's working. Now we'll step on the brakes. Those are working. And we'll use our turn signal while our foot's on the brake to make sure it cycles properly. Okay that's working, we'll try the other side. Perfect, everything's working just like it's supposed to. And that completes our look at and installation of the Tekonsha T1 vehicle wiring harness with four pole flat trailer connector. Part number 118739 on our 2012 Volvo XC60.

Part fits in about 30 minutes after removing inner floor and satellite navigation CD. Works perfect, using positive feed from fuse box beside right tail light cluster. 512187

Comments

Its recommended that the taillight converters power feed be connected directly to the vehicles positive battery terminal as outlined in the installation instructions. Failure to do so could cause damage to the vehicles electrical system.

I took my time installing the light kit, dressing all cables and taping them down under the rear panels. The instructions were excellent and easy to follow. I did make two alterations in the installation. First, there was an oval shaped plug at the rear of the car under the spare, so I cut a slit and ran the trailer connector through it to the hitch. The run from the rear of the car to the battery was routed slightly different for example I removed the rear time and routed wire behind wheel well material so no moving suspension parts would damage it. I tested it after installation and everything work perfectly. Used it recently and everything worked. This is an excellent product. 430049

The packet arrived as promised with fairly easy to follow instructions. I found more details online at YouTube, which was pretty cool. However, I do NOT suggest running the wiring under the vehicle as suggested. The drilling, wiring, etc. is very very burdensome and I don't think the wire is made for the undercarriage of a car. Instead, I was able to dress the wire through the interior under moldings, carpet etc. and you never see it. I support etrailer and others can feel safe ordering from them. 269012

Quick easy install, the only complaints I have is that the instructions mention the "Red" 12ga power wire which is actually black on my harness. But it's the only 12ga wire so it wasn't confusing. Also, the wiring kit made lights hookup a piece of cake, simple plug and go installation. Thank you. 83641

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver, Wiring, and Ball Mount Compatible with 2015.5 Volvo XC60
  • The 2015.5 Volvo XC60 leaves a little hubbub as you mentioned over model year fits. You won't need to worry about this as we have the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 75671 confirmed to fit all 2010 thru 2017 models of the XC60. This hitch does require a specific ball mount size to fit properly. I recommend the Draw-Tite Ball Mount for 2" Hitches - 3/4" Rise, 2" Drop - 8-1/2" Long - 7.5K # 2923 which is a confirmed fit. The R-Design model likely requires you to remove and trim the rear bumper cover but it's still going to fit. I've lined a video that shows the installation but it's not an R-Design so it doesn't show the trimming unfortunately. • The trailer wiring harness # 118739 was only tested and rated for use when connected to the vehicle battery as indicated in the instructions I have linked. You should not use any other power source because it, too, is not rated for this purpose so there is no way to determine how it would operate. Connecting the wire to the battery is not as difficult as you might think. The most time-consuming part is routing the wire. Everything else is fairly straight forward.

It comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin and clip, and a storage bag. For trailer wiring use # 118739....

  • Why Does Curt Hitch for 2013 Volvo XC60 List a Harder Install than Draw Tite
  • The difficulty ratings for the install of the hitches for the 2013 Volvo XC60 are decided by the manufacturers. The Draw Tite hitch part # 75671 and the Curt part # 13268 are both so similar that neither would install easier than the other. Curt just estimated that their hitch would take around 20 minutes longer than Draw Tite did. The install rating is nothing more than just the length of time it would take. I attached an install video for the Draw Tite for you to check out as well. If...

  • Installing Draw-Tite Class III Receiver Part # 75671 Hitch on Volvo XC60
  • The Draw-Tite Class III Receiver you mentioned, part # 75671 is a fit for 2010-1012 Volvo XC60 models. Instead of the weld nuts used in the XC90, the XC60 will have holes in the frame (as you have found). To install the hitch, large block washers and carriage bolts are threaded up into the frame so that the bolts stick out of the frame members and provide an attachment point. The hitch includes a fish wire that is used to pass the block washers and bolts into the frame. This procedure...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch And Trailer Wiring For 2012 Volvo XC60
  • If you are looking for a video that explains how to install a trailer hitch on a 2012 XC60 I can help you out. The XC60 is the same generation for 2008 and up so the installation for a hitch on your 2012 would be the same for those vehicle. The hitch you came from, part # 13268 is a Class lll hitch from Curt. This is a Class lll hitch and it has a 2 inch receiver opening. I have attached a video for this installation of this hitch on a 2013 XC60 which would be the same as your 2012. If...

  • Fit of Draw-Tite Class III Trailer Hitch on 2010 Volvo XC60
  • According to my research, the Volvo was first available in North America as a 2010 model, is it possible your vehicle was manufactured in 2009 as a 2010 model? The Draw-Tite Class III hitch, part # 75671 would indeed be a fit. If your XC60 is a European spec vehicle, the fit of the hitch has NOT been tested, so I wouldn't be able to guarantee fit. If you'll be using the hitch for towing purposes, you'll need the following to complete your towing system: Trailer wiring harness with...

  • Trunk and Hitch Mounted Bike Rack Options for a 2010 Volvo XC60
  • The Thule Raceway Platform-Style Bike Rack, # TH9003PRO, will fit on your 2010 Volvo XC60, however, it is a heavy rack, about 115 lbs fully loaded, and can potentially damage your bumper if the bike rack is installed too tightly with a heavy load. Trunk mounted bike racks are not designed to damage your vehicle if they are installed correctly and used within capacity. For a trunk mounted bike rack I recommend using the Thule Raceway 2 Bike Rack, # TH9001XT. This bike rack is considerably...

  • Will Tow Ready Wiring Harness 118739 Affect the Trailer Stability Assist on a 2010 Volvo XC60
  • Because the Tow Ready wiring harness, # 118739, connects to the tail light wiring for the proper signals and the vehicle battery to power the trailer lights, it will not interfere with the stability assist feature on your 2010 Volvo XC60. The tail light wiring and the stability assist are two separate systems. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view.

  • 4-Way to 5-Way Flat Trailer Connector Adapter for a 2014 Volvo XC60
  • You are correct that wiring harness # 118739 for your 2014 Volvo XC60 does not have a connection for the reverse lights on the vehicle. You will need a 4 to 5-Way flat adapter, # 20036, to convert it to a 5-Way. The only tricky part is locating the reverse light wire on the vehicle. It looks like the reverse lights are in the tail light assemblies (instead of in the hatch) so it should not be all that difficult. All you need to do is find the back of the reverse light and the wire that...
