Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the rear threshold plate, trunk liner, and tail light assemblies to access this harness.

Tail Light Connecter Diagram

Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery and insert the provided fuse.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in your side storage compartment.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits. This unit will also ensure that your trailer's lights illuminate fully, even if your vehicle has pulse-width modulation (PWM) wiring.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan

Today on our 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan we're going to be taking a look at and installing the T1 Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4 Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number 118675. When you're ready to use your trailer plug you just take it out of your side pocket here and lay it over top of our sill plate, making sure to keep it away from the latch part of it. We can close our door down on top of it and plug it into our trailer. When you're all done you'll open it back up and fold it away. You just take your excess, take your weather proof cap, put it around the outside, plug it up and set it in here until we're ready to use it again. It's all completely kept away from the elements. Here's what our kit's going to consist of.

We're going to have our module light box, our 4 flat connector with our weather tight cover. We're going to have a roll of wire that's going to go from our module light box up into the battery, connecting to our fuse holder. We're going to have some butt connectors and a fuse, 2 sided tape to attach our module light and some zip ties. What you're going to get with this module light box, this is going to isolate your trailer from your factory wiring. Therefore, if you had a back feed or a short in your trailer it's not going to affect the wiring on your vehicle and it's going to protect the delicate circuits that are in your vehicle.

Now we'll show you how we installed it. Our first step is going to be remove our taillights on both sides. To access the bolts we're going to need to pop off this black trim panel here that covers up the bolts. We're going to take a trim tool, or you can use a small flat bladed screwdriver. You want to just kind of get it in between. You're going to gently pry it out.

Now to release these clips on the back side to gain access to the screws. We'll take a T25 torques bit and we'll take out these 2 screws. We'll take a plastic panel tool, let's go to the backside here and release the clip it slides into here on the back here. We're going to need to unplug this back of the light, we're going to slide out this red clip, that's our lock. We can push down on this black tab here and that releases the lock out of the light.

We'll repeat this for the other side. Now we're going to need to remove the cover for the spare tire, or you can just take it out; make it a lot easier. Dissemble this, set it to the side. We're going to need to remove our sill plate here. There's going to be some clips . 2 clips on either side; you need to pry the centers out and the clip will release. You can use a small screwdriver or a panel tool just to get behind it, they're a little difficult, and just pop the centers out. Now we can take our sill plate off. Just going to kind of pull it back. We'll release it from the clips and we'll set that aside. Now we're going to go to the passenger side here. We're going to take out this little pocket, the door. Take our module box, we'll just set it in place over here. We're going to take our green wire and route it up through the inside. We're going to come out through the taillight. Then we'll take our factory wire and we'll plug it into our T-connector. You'll hear it snap and we'll apply the lock, let us know that it's secure. Now we're going to need to get our yellow wire, route it down behind. We're going to route that over to the driver's side. We're going to need to get it behind our panel here and we're going to come out through our taillight as well on this side. We went ahead and took out a T20 screw out of this corner and pulled our panel back. Taking a piece of airline tubing and pushed it in behind and brought it out through the panel. We're going to tape our wiring harness to it and we're going to pull it up and out the hole. It's a good idea to keep it as compact as you can, so tape it close to there. Take our wire and once we have our wire out we can take all the tape off. We'll take our factory plug and we'll plug it into the female side of our T1 connector. Listen for that snap and we'll push down our red lock pin, and we'll be ready to put our taillights back in. We went ahead and snapped our panel back into place and put that 1 screw in. Put our door back on. I went ahead and just took a little bit of packing tape, or you can use electrical tape, just to tape our wire up out of the way so we can reinstall our sill plate. You just want to keep it held up out of there as you're putting your sill plate back into position. Slip it back in, then I'll just pull out our rubber molding and we'll be ready to move on to our next process. Now we can reinstall our 2 push pins. Push it in and snap it down. We'll take our taillight and inaudible 00:06:23 the other half of our T1 connector, slide it into position. Listen for the snap and we'll lock it down with that red lock. Now we can just feed these extra wires back inside the body. We'll slip it back into position and we can reinstall our screws. The last thing, we need to put our cover back into position. We'll slip it in the backside first and we'll repeat this for the other side. We're going to take that large roll of black wire we had, we're going to need to feed it underneath our panel here. We're going to bring it up and take our box back out for the time being. We're going to strip back this wire a little bit more and take 1 of our yellow butt connectors supplied with our kit, place it in there. We'll crimp it. We'll take that large black roll of wire, same thing with this side. Now that we have them crimped we'll give it a nice tug. You want to invest in a good set of crimpers because you don't want to under-crimp it or over-crimp it, possibly compromising our connection. Then we're going to wrap it up with electrical tape. We just want to help keep some dirt and corrosion out of our connections. Should be okay being it's on the inside of the vehicle, but better safe than sorry. Now we're going to pick the location to mount our box. We're going to take some rubbing alcohol and clean off an area in here. We'll take our 2 sided tape, we'll place it on the backside of our box, peel it off. We'll adhere the box inside the fender here. The last thing we're going to have to do on this part is we're going to have to get our self tapping screw that's supplied and we're going to attach it to the sheet metal here. We're going to go ahead and use this doubled up piece of sheet metal for a better connection. You just want to make sure that everything is clear from behind it. Now we're going to need to get this 12 volt wiring up to the front of the car to the battery. We found a grommet here in the floor, poke a hole in that grommet. We're going to run our wire down and come outside the vehicle underneath. We'll just go ahead and feed that whole roll of wire in there. We'll take our wire and we're going to tuck it back behind the panel a little bit. Bring it across and we'll take some electrical tape, just put a couple pieces on there to kind of hold it into position. We'll take a little bit of RTV available on our website, part number LT37467, that should keep it sealed up. Now we can reinstall all of our paneling on the inside here. We're going to go ahead and run our wiring up under the body to the front of the vehicle. We'll just go ahead and route it and then we'll show you how we routed it after we get it installed. We went ahead and just kind of come across, zip tying it to the frame of the underside of the body, being sure to keep away from anything that could pinch it or any kind of heat sources, and anything that's going to be sharp. We went around the frame and we followed our electrical and brake lines until we got underneath this access panel. Then we zip tied it to the brake lines underneath the access panel. We're going to go up the fire wall here, we're going to drop down a piece of airline tubing and attach our wire and we'll pull it up. We can tape our wire to our airline tubing and we'll go ahead and pull it up to the top side. Once we have our wire routed up here, we want to make sure we stay away from the steering linkage or the CV axles or anything that's going to be moving or anything that's going to be a heat source. We'll go ahead and zip tie it off and we'll pull it up nice and taut. We'll trim off our excess. Now we can go ahead and take our battery cover off and set it aside. We're going to need to route our wire. Going to route it inside here, let it tuck down. It will fit inside the side of the cover here. We're going to go ahead and take our fuse holder and cut it at an offset so we have one side longer than the other. We'll strip back both ends about 1/4 of an inch. To the long side I'm going to add our ring loop connector that's going to attach directly to the battery. On the other side we're going to put a butt connector that is supplied. We're going to cut our wire coming from the back of the car and strip that one back as well. That we'll put the other half of our butt connector. Just to keep out any dirt and moisture we're going to wrap with electrical tape. It should be pretty safe inside the battery box here, but a little extra never hurt. We're going to need to loosen up that 10 millimeter nut and we're going to put our ring terminal on there. This is actually a captured nut, so we're going to go ahead and just split this and we'll slide it into place. We'll just take a little piece of it out and we're going to slide this into position. May be a little easier just to put it on the backside. When we have that tight we'll tuck it out of the way. Our last step is going to be to remove this weather tight cap and take our supplied 15 amp fuse, slide it into position. We'll replace our cap and we'll tuck it all nicely down into the box. We'll replace our cover, snap it back down and we can test our lights. We're going to be using the Curt 4 Flat Trailer Connector Tester, part number I26 available on our website. We're going to try our taillights first. Followed by our left turn signal, and our right. When we apply our brakes you'll see 2 lights light up. Perfect. That's going to do it for our look at and install of the T1 Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4 Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part 118675 on our 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan.

Very easy install. Once through the video was all the help I needed. A tip for removing the plastic button retainers: Thread a coarse drywall screw into the center hole-- finger tight will do-- then pull screw with pliers. The center will pull up and the entire button will come out easily. 560350

This is the first time I have used etrailer for aftermarket accessories. The online product information was well presented and easy to follow. My order was accepted with an email follow up and detailed tracking information. I received the order today which was exactly as requested and on time. It doesn't get any better than that. Very pleased! Keep up the good work. Phil S 336148

The wiring harness arrived quickly and was complete. The etrailer video was clear and showed all of the steps necessary to correctly install the wiring. It is really time-consuming to run the power lead to the battery without a lift for the car, but it can be done with patience and some jacks. I am a novice at any type of auto work and I got it done in a couple of hours. Great product and great directions! 399136

I purchased this product for a 2017 VW Tiguan. I had originally ordered and installed the Curt Wiring Harness for this same vehicle but there was a problem with the module not functioning correctly when the headlights where turned on. I returned the Curt product and ordered this Tekonsha. It installed in no time at all and works perfectly. Having the opportunity to actually physically hold both products in my hands I would say the Tekonsha looks and feels "beefier" compared to its Curt counterpart. It also comes with a 15 amp breaker compared to the 10 amp breaker the Curt offers. I would recommend this product. 468654

I purchased a trailer hitch and wiring kit for my VW Tiguan on Friday and it arrived on Monday! In the description it stated 20 min for hitch installation and 45 for the wiring kit. The hitch was on in 10 minutes, but the wiring harness took 3 hrs, and i still have a few pieces of my car to put back together. As far as quality, the pieces look great, but haven't been put to the test yet. 550708

Matt, installation was relatively easy, took me about 3 hours though because it was difficult to pass the wire from back of the tiguan to the battery through the Firewall. The box that is part of the wire harness sits in the cavity next to the right tail light. The plug-and-play nature of this set trumps that of older splice and pray styles. The easy part was unplugging the wire harness thats already connected and plugging in the one supplied by e- trailer. if you can follow the directions and have a good head on your shoulders you should be fine. You will need,a pry tool, to remove paneling.a socket wrench seta wire strippersome spare wire connectors in case you crimp the one they provide poorly - I didnt solder anything but thats not to say you shouldnt if you chose to do so. a cobalt tipped drill bit set to get through the firewall. - i chose a spot directly under the glove box and ran the wires across the engine from the battery. be sure to avoid to O2 line and a testerThe left and right blinker will work with the tester when installation is complete.Im assuming the brakes require a closed circuit on the flat four because they worked when we connected my girlfriends 1969 lo liner to it.

This unit provides connection to the trailer lights. The VW, like many modern cars, have added complex lighting circuitry to keep the driver informed of a blown bulb, which means a simple hookup to the trailer lights is no longer possible. This unit provides separate power for the trailer lights, thus keeping the VW system from thinking there’s a problem with the vehicle lights. Once hooked up, it worked great for my small trailer (regular tail/stop/turn lights, plus 4 more marker lights). Installation too nearly two hours, most of that trying to figure out how to remove various plastic pieces from the rear of the car. First side took me over an hour, second side much quicker as I learned the tricks. The lights connection comes from the back side of the car’s two tail lights, with a connection you plug in without any cutting or changing the vehicle wires. Then you need to provide 12v power to the small black box that this kit provides for trailer light control. The instructions call for running a wire (provided) up to the battery, but our ’15 Tiguan has a power plug in the rear cargo area so I elected to draw 12v power from there. Only downside is that the power plug is only hot when the vehicle’s on, so if you park the car and put on the flashers then the trailer lights will not be flashing. When the car is on, everything works perfectly. I installed the trailer wire pigtail in the right side wheel well, so I just open the hatch, pull the plastic cover panel, run my trailer pigtail to the trailer and shut the hitch. When not in use, the wire and the draw hitch ball mount, plus a pair of gloves, are hidden behind the plastic cover. Overall, a great bargain compared to the cost of the VW unit! 231757

I watched the install video and knew right away I was going try interior routing the power wire because I don't have access to a lift. I found a grommet in the firewall where I think the clutch pedal would go. I was afraid I might run out of wire routing it this way. That didn't happen. Had about 3 ft leftover. Everything else went just like in the video. I ordered the tester they used to check my work. Success!! 668675

The product works great. Instructions for installation were easy to follow. The biggest problem I had was running the power wire up to the battery. I ended up running it under the driver side carpet edge moldings. I had to remove rear seat. Finding a place to get it through the firewall was a challenge but once there, I hooked it up and everything just worked. 655524

Another great hitch and wiring. Installed on Tiguan already.Takes 15 minutes, wiring takes 30 minutes. Still towing 25 yr old aluminum trailer I built. I will add a basket for gas cans weld one up or buy one? Don't know yet looking through junk pile for steel. Should last until I get hit again, the hitch will help in an impact. Last one on Camry took 45 mph hit from rear stopped at light. impact bent the frame totaled car. will re -cut and weld the old hitch into something else. 650654

Do you have a question about this Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring?

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendations for a 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan
  • There are several differences amongst the various hitch classes but the important factor is that the hitch is rated high enough for what you need it for. The hitch tongue weight and gross trailer weight capacity will need to exceed the trailer tongue weight and gross weight. Class I and II trailer hitches have 1-1/4 inch receiver openings whereas a Class III hitch will have a 2 inch receiver opening. Class I hitches usually top out at 200 pounds tongue weight capacity and 2,000 pounds...

  • Installation of Tekonsha Wiring Harness 118675 Power Wire for 2017 VW Tiguan
  • It is not recommended to use a different power supply for the Tekonsha Upgraded Heavy Duty ModuLite Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness # 119190KIT. The 12V power wire is designed to be run directly from the battery to ensure correct voltage and correct amperage while avoiding the vehicle fuses and relays. Although it is possible that rear power supply could work, it has not been tested for that application so it is not recommended. For your 2017 VW Tiguan, I recommend using the...

  • Trailer Hitch, Wiring and Related Towing Items for 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan Limited
  • For the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan and Tiguan Limited we do offer both 1-1/4-inch Class II and also 2-inch Class III hitches. All four products are shown on the linked page. The two 2-inch hitches available are the Draw-Tite # 75658 and Curt # C13133. Both share a common 350-lb tongue weight capacity and essentially identical installation processes. I recommend using the Draw-Tite since it does NOT require use of a support strap # 18050 as the Curt does for non-towing use as with a bike...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan
  • For your Volkswagen Tiguan I would recommend the Draw Tite hitch part # 75658 which is a confirmed fit. This is a 2 inch hitch which is preferred over the 1-1/4 inch hitch size for a couple reasons. This size will have higher towing capacities and have more accessories made for it. I attached an install video for the hitch for you to check out as well. For trailer wiring you then would want the # 118675 which is a confirmed fit. Since you wanted to do some towing you might be interested...

  • When Installing 4-Way in 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan Can Hot Lead Wire be Run Through Cabin
  • Yes, you can absolutely run the hot lead of the Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118675 through the cabin of your 2017 VW Tiguan. You are certainly not alone in not having access to a lift and feeling that going underneath the vehicle can be a pain, so you can route it through your cabin, using Trim Pad Remover # ALL648544 to loosen the trim. In fact, we have a help article about running a hot lead, and I added the section about routing the wire through your vehicle;...

  • Does Trailer Wiring Kit for 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan Need to Run to Vehicle Battery
  • Not all vehicles can handle the additional amperage draw of the trailer taillights on the vehicle taillight circuits. Those vehicles need setup that draws power from the battery which is what the # 118675 does. Some vehicles have higher rated circuits that can handle this, and others need to have the power drawn straight from the battery to protect the taillight circuits. I know it's super tempting to power the converter from an easy to access power source but doing so voids the warranty...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Towing Capacity for 2012 VW Tiguan
  • The Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Receiver Hitch # 75658 referenced in your question is confirmed to fit your 2012 VW Tiguan and it does indeed have a towing weight capacity of 3,500 pounds. With that being said, a towing setup will always be limited by its weakest component. This means that if the vehicle itself has a capacity of 2,200 pounds, this is the capacity you will need to adhere to, even though the hitch is rated for more. This custom-fit hitch will use existing holes in your...

  • Alternatives for Trailer Hitches That Do Not Allow for the Use of a Weight Distribution System
  • I do have ways to help with trailer sway and vehicle sag on your 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan but none of the trailer hitch receivers they have for your vehicle are compatible with a weight distribution system. Load leveling is what Volkswagen calls what we refer to as weight distribution. A weight distribution system is never going to be required however, if the gross trailer weight (GTW) of your trailer is more than 50% of the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) for your vehicle, the use...

  • Can 12 Volt Outlet be Used to Power Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan
  • Trailer wiring harnesses that require a direct connection to the vehicle battery, such as # 118675 for the 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan, must only be connected to the battery. There are a few reasons for this. First, if installed in any other manner other than what is outlined in the instructions will void the warranty. Second, the idea of getting power from the battery is to minimize the amount of draw on the vehicle electrical system. Should there be a catastrophic short there is less chance...

  • Installation of Wiring Harness on 2012 VW Tiguan
  • You should definitely not tap into the trunk's 12V power outlet when installing T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118675. The accessory 12V outlets were not designed to handle the additional load of a wiring harness and it will likely fail. I strongly recommend taking the time to run the lead to the vehicle's battery. I've added a link to a video showing this harness being installed on a 2012 VW Tiguan for you to take a look at as well.

  • Trailer Hitch for a 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan with 3 Rows of Seats
  • Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 76192 is listed as a fit for all styles of the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan so that would include models with a 3rd row of seats. We have yet to have customers state whether or not the models they have include the 3rd row of seats but all of the reviews thus far have been positive. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch...

  • Trailer Wiring Harness for a 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan
  • Trailer wiring harness # 118675 will just plug in line with the tail light wiring on your 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan and connect to the battery as well to provide power to the trailer lights. The harness provides a 4-Way flat trailer connector at the back of the vehicle. It is definitely a low cost alternative to the dealer parts and installation and the computer will not have to be reprogrammed. I have included a link to a video review of the harness, the installation instructions, and...

  • Trailer Wiring Harness Recommendation for 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan
  • The Tekonsha T-One part # 118675 that you referenced is a confirmed fit for your 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan and will give you a 4-way trailer wiring connector. I could not get any information online for the part number you referenced so I am not sure what functionality it would have in comparison. The 4-way covers all of the taillight functions. I attached an install video for this harness for you to check out on a similar 2016 Tiguan as well.

  • Recommended Hitch for 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan That Does Not Require Stabilizing Strap 18050
  • Many Curt brand hitches do carry the warranty requirement to use a strap like # 18050 when any non-wheeled load is installed in the hitch, such as a bike rack or cargo carrier. This applies both to their 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch # C12097 and their 2-inch Class III hitch # C13133. The strap can be positioned at the top of the rear hatch, or on other vehicles to one of the raised roof side rails or roof rack crossbars. Since use of the strap can be a nuisance for some folks I suggest...

The part # 118675 will easily install by plugging inline with the taillight harnesses of the Tiguan that I described.

  • 4-Pole Trailer Wiring Harness for 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan
  • The TowReady T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118384 that you referenced is not a fit for the 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan. This 4-pole harness uses a standardized round U.S. Car Connector to plug in to the vehicle wiring and your Tiguan does not use this type of connector. Currently there is one confirmed fit for a 4-pole trailer wiring harness for your vehicle and it is a hard-wired type converter, part # 118675 from Tekonsha. This kit installs at the tail...

  • Current Output Capacity for Tekonsha 4-Pole Trailer Wiring Harness 118675
  • 4-pole wiring harnesses, which carry stop, turn and tail light signals, generally have a current output in the range of 2 to 4 amps in each of the stop/turn circuits and from 4 to 7.5-amps in the taillight circuit. These current ratings can vary by harness manufacturer and by vehicle year, make and model. The Tekonsha harness # 118675 which fits your 2016 VW Tiguan has a maximum output of 4.2- and 7.5-amps. • Trailer Wiring Recommendation for 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan
  • What you described sounds like a shorted out converter box on the trailer wiring you installed. The converter boxes of trailer wiring are designed to take themselves out before allowing a short from trailer wiring to make it to the vehicle wiring. We've also noticed that Curt converter boxes typically short out easier than other brands. So best option will be to replace your Curt kit on your 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan with a Tow Ready harness part # 118675 after tracking down what caused the...
