Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery and insert the provided fuse.

T-One Connection Location Points Behind Tail Lights

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in the jack storage compartment of your rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Video Transcript for Tekonsha Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2017 Toyota Sienna

Today on our 2017 Toyota Sienna we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-pole flat trailer connector, part number 118648. So here's what our wiring looks like when it's installed. We're going to have a 4-pole flat trailer connector, and it's going to give us all our required lights to go down the road, such as our turn signals, stop lights, and clearance lights. The built-in dust cover, we can use it to actually secure our wiring to our hitch, that way it'll be ready right here whenever we're ready to tow. Now that we know what it looks like when it's all finished up and installed, let's show you how we got it there. To begin our installation, we're going need to open up our rear hatch so we can gain access to the tail lights. Now each tail light is going to have two fasteners holding it in place.

Now, I'm going to use a 10 millimeter socket to remove those. We're going to go in and repeat that on the other side, as well. Now, when we go to remove our tail light, we're going to want to grab it as firmly as we can, and pull straight back. You don't want to go too much side to side, because there are some pins that are holding it in place. So if you can, you can grab the plastic edge towards the center, get your hand behind it, and pull straight back. Now, we're going to have two connectors inside of here, and each one is going to have a small tab on top, so we're going to want to push in on that tab, and we should be able to slide the connector out.

We're going to go and repeat that same thing on the passenger side, as well. Now, per the instructions, they are going to have you pull up a lot of panels on the interior of our vehicle, but we found an easier way to get our wiring installed. Now, per the instructions, the wiring would stay on the inside of the vehicle, but we're actually going to be mounting our wiring to our hitch on the outside. So, I'm going to start on the passenger side, and I'm going to take a piece of airline tube that I had laying around, and you can use whatever you have available, even a coat hanger'll work, but I'm going to take it and go in between my bumper here and the body, and I'm going to feed this down until it comes out the bottom, underneath my car. So, where my airline came out of the bottom of my bumper, I'm going to take my green wire with the two connectors, and my red and brown wire with the two connectors, and I'm going to take a little bit of electrical tape, and I'm going to tape it to the end of my airline tube. Now we can go in and grab the other side of the airline tube, and start pulling it up. I'm going to take a little bit of patience in help guiding it up. Now that our connector's up top, I'm going to go ahead and remove the tape and the airline tube.

We'll notice that the connectors are going to look very similar to the ones on our vehicle, and we're going to want to plug in the female into the male end, and the male into the female end. Now, we're going to have a four and a three prong socket plug, and you're going to want to make sure you plug them in to the corresponding ones. Now coming out of our converter box, we should have a white wire with a ring terminal attached, and that's going to be for our ground. Now, they do provide us with a self tapping screw. I'm going take the self tapping screw and secure it to the floor. Now, we're also going to have a black wire coming off our converter box, and this is going to need be ran up to our battery.

Now, they do provide us with a length of wire that we can attach to it. So, I'm going to take a butt connector, and they do provide us some in our kit, but I'm going to be replacing this with a heat shrink butt connector, that way there's just a little bit more protection against moisture build up and corrosion. On the end of my wire, it's already pre-stripped, so I'm going to insert it into my butt connector and crimp it down. Now I can take the length of wire that they provide us in our kit, and I'm going to strip back one end of it. I'm going to go ahead and put it into the other end of my butt connector and crimp it down. I'm going to be using a heat gun to shrink down my connector. I just want to mention you want to be careful not to char the wire or the connector itself. Now, we're going to find a spot to mount our converter box, and they do provide us with some double-sided foam tape, so we can stick it to a flat surface. So I think I'm going to mount mine up here, underneath the fascia behind the wheel well, so it's up and out of the way. I'm going to take a rag with just a little bit of cleaner, and make sure the surface that I'm going to put it on is nice and clean. Then I can take my double-sided tape, I'm going to take the backing off, I'm going to stick it to the back of my converter box. I'm going to push firmly to make sure it sticks. Then I can take the other piece of the backing off, and we're going to reach up and press it against the side of the body, firmly, making sure that it sticks. Now we are going to have to get our 4-pole wiring, our yellow wire and our black charge wire, over to the driver's side. So again, I'm going to take a piece of airline tube, and I'm actually going to come in right here where I'm going to mount my wiring, and I'm going to run it behind this panel. I'm going to go behind, underneath the panel, and come across until it comes out the other end. I'm going to take the end of all three of my wires, and I'm going attach it to my airline tube. Just going to take a little bit of electrical tape, and secure it. Now we can go ahead and start pulling it through, help guiding it up behind the hitch, and above that panel. Now, since my 4-pole needs to come out right here, I'm going to go ahead and pull my wires through, and let them come down, and then I'll let my 4-pole hang right here. So I'm going to take the tape off, and pull all the excess wiring out for my 4-pole, and then I can continue to work the yellow and black wire over to the driver's side. Now inaudible 00:05:58 on the driver's side, very edge of our bumper, we're going to have two fasteners holding that panel up, and I'm just going to remove these two just so we have a little bit of flex to gain access to the driver's area over here. Now, we're going to be using a 10 millimeter socket to remove these bolts. So we can actually take the panel, and we're just going to pull it down slightly so we can get our wires tucked behind there, and again, we're only going to be moving the yellow and black wire over all the way to the left. The 4-pole is going to stay in the center of the vehicle, where the hitch is. Then we can put the panel back in place. Now over here on the side, we can go ahead and pull this section down just a little bit, as well. And we're going to do the same thing that we did on the passenger side with bringing an airline tube so we can get our yellow wire up to our tail light. Now our charge wire, I mentioned before, we are going to have to run it up to the battery. Now everybody's going to do this a little bit differently, but just want to mention you want to stay away from any heat sources, like the exhaust, or any moving parts. So I'm going to ahead and run my wire, and then I'll show you how I routed it. I ran my power wire underneath the cover, came out, went up and over my muffler and my rear axle here, and I followed down along my fuel tank, along the outside edge of the frame rail, coming out right here, going underneath this cover right here, and finally coming out right behind the engine. Now, we're going to need to run this wire up to the battery, so let's go ahead and go up top, and I'll show you how we're going to get it there. I'm going to take a piece of airline tube, again, and I'm going to route it down through the engine compartment til I can meet up with that black wire underneath. Now let's go back down underneath and attach our wire. I'm going to take my wire, I'm actually going to insert it into my airline tube, and then just put a small bit of electrical tape so I don't have to worry about it falling out. Now we can head back up and start pulling it up. Now, when you pull your wire up, you want to make sure that you pull all the slack out, and it's always a good idea to double check by going underneath and make sure it didn't get waded up, 'cause that could cause potential problems later on down the road. I'm going to zip tie my wire to some existing factory lines right here, just so I don't have to worry about it falling back down, and help keep it secure. And go ahead and strip back the end of our black wire, and we're going to take another one of our yellow heat shrink butt connectors and crimp it into place. Now our wiring kit is fused protected, so they're provided us with a fuse holder, and it's one big loop, so I'm going to go ahead and cut it straight in half, and I'm going to strip back both ends. Now on one of the ends, I'm going to put it in the butt connector that we just applied to the black wire, and on the other end, we're going to take the provided ring terminal, slip it on, and crimp it into place. Now we're going to attach our ring terminal to the positive post of our battery. So we're going to need to remove this nut right here, and I'm going to be using a 12 millimeter socket to remove it. So once we have the nut removed, we can take our ring terminal, slide it over the post, and then reinstall the nut. Finally we can put our 15 amp fuse in place, put our dust cover on, and we can start to tidy up any wires that we may have left loose. Go ahead and plug our lights into our tail lights, line up our tail lights, and put them back in place. Now the last thing we're going to need to do is to test our wiring, so I have my 4-pole tester here, and if you need to pick one of these up, you can pick one up on our website using part number I26. Now I'm going to garb an extra set of hands so they can run my lights and I can verify that everything's working properly. If you'd turn on the headlights, please. Looks good. Left turn signal. Right turn signal. The brakes. And finally, the breaks and both turn signals, please. Looks like everything's good and we're ready to hit the road. That'll finish up our look at the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-pole flat trailer connector, part number 118648, on our 2017 Toyota Sienna.

Installed, but have not pulled a trailer yet, installation tool us about 3 hours with a lot of BS, and jokes inbetween,. It was more time consuming for home job. Make sure all tools are present before starting. The real test will have to see how long the harness module will last. both hitch and wire harness looked like they made of good strong materials. 724637

HI guys - love the kit but it did have 2 problems. First, there was a typo in the directions about what side of the rear lights to attach the kit (I did e-mail Tekonsha and they have updated and corrected the directions). Second, the black wire that you attach the battery was about 2 feet short - so I had to buy more wire (someone owes me $1.35!). Everything else was great! 564031

Superb. I cannot imagine going elsewhere for hitches and accessories. Since I am not too handy I find the videos invaluable as a source of techniques and tips. The kit contained everything necessary for the installation except basic tools. The trailer lights worked first time so what more need be said. I needed the trailer in a hurry but I did not have a way to lift the van so I could only do a temporary job of running the hot lead forward to the battery, with the plan to have my regular auto mechanic redo it correctly asap. You will have to lift the van somehow to do a thorough job of securing that long lead. I wish I had bought dielectric grease, extra double sided tape and extra connectors. 439923

For the most part, this is a really nice kit. I installed this on a 2015 Toyota Sienna van. The one challenge was that the positive power source wire provided in the kit was about 3 foot short of what I needed. I had to add in some of my own wiring to complete the job. It provides for a very clean install without slicing into the vans wiring directly. Instead, it uses connectors to splice into the existing harness. Installation was not all that difficult, with the hardest part being wiring power from the battery to the back of the van. Even that part was not that difficult. There is a rubber grommet on the fire Walter which other wiring comes through. I simply put a very small hole in that grommet and Randy positive wire through that hole. You then run the wire under trim pieces to the back passenger side of the van. All in all, installation was fairly straightforward and simple, though a bit time consuming. Instructions were a bit weird but overall an easy install. They made it seem like it was effortless to just pull a new positive wire from the battery up front all the way to the back of the van. I don't know why that is necessary. 326698

Great product. On a previous vehicle I installed a hitch on, a light kit wasn't available, so I had to tap into the lines to the tail lights directly. With this kit, a line goes directly to the battery to power the trailer lights and the difference is huge. The trailer lights are substantially brighter and more visible. I installed this kit at the same time as the hitch so everything was taken apart at the same time. I chose to route the wires differently than what was in the instructions. I kept everything on the exterior of the vehicle, running the wires behind the bumper instead of under the threshold. That way, I don't have to open the rear door to hook up the trailer. I feel the instructions for running the supply line from the battery to the control box were more detailed on where to place it. The first route I tried ended up being too long so the wire was too short. After redoing it, it worked out well. I did have to deal with an AWD model which affected where I could place the wire. Overall it is a great product. I wish I had taken pictures during installation. 562438

I used the 118648 harness with my 2016 Sienna. Rather that splice lines, it is really nice and convenient to have everything plug and play. There is a rubber grommet in the car jack well of the 2016 Sienna which can be used for routing the 4 conductor trailer wire down through the well and to a trailer mount. I cut a slit in the rubber grommet and when done, sealed it with liquid rubber. I used the Draw-tite 76112 hitch, which I love, with the 18144 4-Pole Flat Mounting Bracket. I needed to add an extension to the 4 conductor trailer wire in order to reach the mount. 483293

I removed one star because, following etrailer's install video left me with the power wire being too short to reach the battery, even though I followed the exact same routing path as the video. That really made me mad because I had to splice in another length. I would have rather bought the length of wire that would reach and fed that through the vehicle than to add another splice. More splices = more trouble. The controller box has a tab that allows you to screw it to a surface, which I did along with the double sided tape. I wouldn't trust just the double-sided tape alone, especially here in the Northeast. If it fails, the wiring and possibly the controller box would land right on the tailpipe, so be aware of that. Otherwise, the install is pretty straight forward. etrailer's shipping was TWO days!! 489082

Works great! The instructions are not writtten correctly though. Mine had no mention that the vehicle has a drivers side. It said to run the main box from the passenger side to the passenger side. The video is correct except I don’t know how you would run the wires if everything was external. I put everything inside the van per the instructions. The box does go on the passenger side and the yellow wire travels across the threshold to the drivers side. 488840

Very easy to install. Total wiring time = 45 min. I did not take apart the rear panel by the driver side taillight to run the wire harness. It was a little difficult to fish through due to the size of the connections. 378719

by:
2017 Toyota Sienna

Installation went well. I didn't need to remove the "trunk" panel to route the wire to the left side. The wire slipped behind it by the carpeting. I used the manufacturers cable route instead of under the body for the power lead. The threshold panels popped off easily to access the wire chase. There was a gromet in the firewall that permitted easy pass thru to the engine compartment. 392669

2017 Toyota Sienna

Easy to install. I did not run a wire up to the battery/fuse block. I installed a cigarette plug on the wire and used the power point near the tailgate. I keep the cigarette plug and trailer plug wires in the jack storage area. I rarely use the trailer lights as my hitch is mostly used for bike racks and a hitch basket. Shipping was fast. 561593

Comments
Drawing the power directly from the battery serves to isolate the tow vehicles sensitive electronics from any short circuits that might occur in the trailer wiring. Connecting the converters power feed anywhere other than the battery or where the converters manufacturer recommends can leave your vehicles electrical system exposed to possible damage, and will also unfortunately void any warranty coverage.

  • Does Hot Lead for Both 4-Way Harness and 7-Way Connector Need to be Run on Vehicle
The Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness 4-Way Connector # 118648 for your 2017 Toyota Sienna does require that a hot lead be run to the vehicle battery. This hot lead is needed to power the converter for the 4-Way harness and will be separate from the power wire that needs to be installed for a 7-Way kit like # ETBC7. The 12V wire for a 7-Way is ran to the battery for the 12V pin at the connector. Both power wires will need to be run to the battery. I also don't recommend running...

The difference between part # 118648 and part # 118498 is that part # 118498 is designed for the SE model and part # 118648 is designed to work with Siennas that are not the SE model. Since you came from the non-SE model the trailer wiring harness that will work for you is part # 118648. This trailer harness is a simple installation. You just plug it into the connection points behind the driver and passenger side tail lights and then run the hot lead wire to the positive battery post...

  • Trailer Wiring Harness Recommendation for 2017 Toyota Sienna
For trailer wiring harnesses I prefer the Tekonsha brand as they tend to be more reliable over time. So for your 2017 Toyota Sienna you would want the part # 118648 which is a confirmed fit. I attached an install video for you to check out as well.

  • Is a 2018 Toyota Sienna Factory Wired for Trailer Wiring Harness and Converter?
For your 2018 Toyota Sienna, the factory wiring harness at the tail lights is the extent of the wiring for trailer connections. This means you can use a T-One wiring harness with a converter integrated, but you will need to run the power wire to your battery. I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118648 as it is consistently the best brand for long term function. I've attached a couple videos to help with installation and have...

  • Trailer Wiring Harness for 2019 Toyota Sienna XLE That Does Not Require Splicing
For your 2019 Toyota Sienna XLE the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118648 will work perfectly for you without any type of splicing into your wires needed. To install this you will need to plug the harness into your tail light housing, which is why no splicing is needed. I do highly recommend using Trim Pad Remover # ALL648544 for easier access, and I have added a link to the written instructions as well as a link to a video install on a '19 Sienna...

  • Can the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness for a 2017 Toyota Sienna Be Powered Using the Rear 12 Volt Aux
The T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness part # 118648 which is a fit for your 2017 Toyota Sienna will need to be powered directly from the vehicle's battery. If you choose to use the rear 12 volt auxiliary power which is not what I recommend then you will need to do so at your own risk. The maximum amp draw for the above trailer wiring harness is separated between two circuits, 7.5 amps for the tail lights and 2.1 amps for the stop/turn signal lights. I have attached an install video that shows...

The plug-in trailer wiring harness that fits your 2017 Toyota Sienna LE is the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118648. This will not require any type of wire splicing and is a plug-in connection. I have added a link showing a video install on a 2017 Toyota Sienna for you to check out as well. • Can Trailer Connector for 2018 Toyota Sienna LE Test Good and Still Have Fuse Blow
Yes, it is possible the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118648 for your 2018 Toyota Sienna LE can test fine and still blow a fuse if you are over the capacity of 2.1 amps per circuit for the stop/turn lights. If you are over that you can switch to the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C56261 which has a 3.0 amps per circuit capacity for the stop/turn lights, but it has just a 5.0 amps per circuit capacity for the tail lights, which is quite a bit less than the Tekonsha's 7.5 amps...

  • Trailer Wiring T-Connector Compatible with 2018 Toyota Sienna SE
For your 2018 Toyota Sienna SE I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118498. This is the confirmed fit for the SE model which is slightly different than the other models. It will install in the same way behind the tail light assemblies and with power directly from the vehicle battery to protect your Sienna SE wiring and electronics. I've attached a video to assist as well as an article for help routing that power wire. Once the installation...

  • Does a 2017 Toyota Sienna Comes With a Factory Trailer Wiring Harness
I do not believe a 2017 Toyota Sienna comes with a factory trailer wiring harness but I do have what you need to add one, the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness part # 118498 for SE trims or part # 118648 for all other trims. These harnesses are both plug and play options that do not require any splicing. I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness in particular because they have the best reputation for longevity and reliability. I have attached an install video for you on both options.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2019 Toyota Sienna for Ground Clearance
The trailer hitch I recommend for your 2019 Toyota Sienna is the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 76112 because if you plan on towing, this hitch is rated for weight distribution and the similar hitches are not. When we test fit the Draw-Tite Hitch # 76112, Curt Hitch # C13343, etrailer.com Hitch # E98853 and EcoHitch # 306-X7255 on a 2019 Toyota Sienna we found that each of them have 13 inches of ground clearance, and with the exception of the EcoHitch, have a 525 lb tongue weight capacity...

Actually the Draw-Tite # 76112, Curt # C13343, etrailer # e98853, and EcoHitch # 306-X7255 all install so that only the receiver is showing. A lot of people like this look instead of having a thick piece of steel underneath their vehicle as well. You are correct in choosing a Class III trailer hitch with a 2" receiver over a Class II trailer hitch with a 1-1/4" receiver. The reason being that they are stronger and they are compatible with many more accessories. For your application I...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2018 Toyota Sienna XLE
The best trailer hitch for your 2018 Toyota Sienna XLE is the etrailer.com # e98853. This is a Class III trailer hitch with a 2" receiver. It features a matte black finish that hides scratches really well, a concealed crosstube, and the best clearance compared to other trailer hitches which is key when using accessories. Then for wiring I recommend the Tekonsha T-One # 118648. This plugs in behind your tail lights and then draws power directly from your battery so that the OEM wiring...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2019 Toyota Sienna
Yes, the etrailer.com hitch part # e98837 will fit and work well on your 2019 Toyota Sienna. This has a 2 inch opening and great towing capacities as well. For trailer wiring you'd want the part # 118648 as long as you don't have an SE model or part # 118498 if you do have SE model. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2017 Toyota Sienna
Since all of the trailer hitches for your 2017 Toyota Sienna require some underbody trimming, and for a few more reasons that I'll get into, the best option is the Draw Tite trailer hitch part # 76112. This is a 2 inch hitch which is the most popular size and has the most capacity, it has a concealed crosstube so it will be less visible than most, and would not require a stabilizer strap like the Curt hitch would if you ever carried a bike rack. For your 2016 Toyota Sienna XLE, the installation of a brake controller will be very similar to the video of the 2005 Sienna I've attached, but unfortunately we don't have your exact model year on video yet. Because the brake controllers all need to be hardwired using the Universal Brake Controller Wiring Kit # ETBC7, many of the installations like the 2018 Honda Odyssey will be extremely similar. • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2019 Toyota Sienna with Most Ground Clearance
Ground clearance is definitely important so a concealed trailer hitch is a smart choice for your 2019 Toyota Sienna. Somewhat surprisingly, when we test fit trailer hitches that fit a '19 Sienna, they each had the same approximate 13" measure from the top of the receiver to the ground - the EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch # 306-X7255, Curt Trailer Hitch # C13343, etrailer.com Trailer Hitch # E98853 and Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 76112. Since the clearance from the ground will be the same...

  • Recommended Best Trailer Hitch Receiver for Ground Clearance on 2018 Toyota Sienna
There is not a minimum clearance required by law for a trailer hitch, so you simply want to make sure you are able to travel without bottoming out your receiver. For instance, the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # C13105 has a dimension of 12 inches from the inside top of the receiver which means approximately 9 inches from the ground to the bottom edge due to the lower the side brackets. If you are concerned about that ground clearance restriction, then...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2020 Toyota Sienna for Ground Clearance
To avoid any issues with ground clearance with your 2020 Toyota Sienna, I strongly recommend a trailer hitch with a concealed crosstube because they will sit up higher and give you more ground clearance than a hitch with a visible crosstube. When we test fit the three trailer hitches that fit your 2020 Sienna that have a concealed crosstube - the etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98853, Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13343, and Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76112 - we found...

With the tow package the Sienna XLE has a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. For a trailer hitch I recommend the etrailer.com Class III Hitch # e98837. This custom hitch is confirmed to fit your vehicle and will use existing holes in its frame for a no-drill installation....
