Installation on a Sedan

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located inside your trunk, behind the tail lights on both the driver's side and passenger's side. You will have to remove the plastic threshold panel and pull back the felt trunk liner to access these connection points.

Installation on a Hatchback

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located inside your trunk, behind the tail lights on both the driver's side and passenger's side. You will have to partially remove the plastic threshold panel, side panels, and cargo trays to access these connection points.

T-One Connection Location Points Behind Tail Lights

Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead with the attached fuse holder to the car battery. Connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery and insert the provided fuse.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in your trunk/cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2012 Chevrolet Sonic

Speaker 1: Today on our 2012 Chevrolet Sonic, we'll be having a look at and installing the Tekonsha T1 Wiring Harness with 4-pole flat trailer connector, part number 118640. Here's what the wiring looks like installed. As you can see, we have an adequate length wire that gets right next to the receiver on our Sonic. This makes it easy for us to hook up to our trailer when we're ready to tow. This wiring harness gives us the basic lighting functions, which are required by law in order for us to safely and legally tow our trailer. Our white wire provides the necessary ground connection between the Sonic and our trailer. Brown wire provides our taillight and running light signal.

And on this circuit we have 7.5 amps of power output, which is more than sufficient to tow a small trailer that has several incandescent light bulbs or basically as many LED light bulbs as we want, because LED light bulbs do draw less power than incandescent lights. Yellow wire is our left turn signal and left brake light. Green wire is our right turn signal and right brake light. On both of these circuits we have a total power output of 4.2 amps each.Built into our connector here, we have a dust cover, which will help protect our harness when it's not in use. One thing that I like to do is use some Dielectric grease, which we have available on our website, and put it inside the connector.

This will help protect it better, to help prevent any corrosion or poor connection from happening with moisture or dirt and debris. Once you have that on, just slide the dust cover over and you're protected. When not in use, this harness is designed to be stored inside your vehicle's trunk. Just open your trunk on up. You'll see when we have it out, you just go across our weather stripping here, making sure we avoid our trunk latch, so it doesn't get pinched. Open up our cargo cover, and you just store it inside where the spare tire would reside, if your vehicle is equipped with one.Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. To begin our install, we'll open up our truck.

Now remove all of our floor coverings. Okay, now we need to remove our threshold, which is this panel here. In order to remove that, we have four plastic clips that run across the edge of it. They are all the same. The way these work is, the center piece you can pop out with a flathead screw driver or a trim handle tool.

Then the whole piece will come out as one unit, just like that. Okay, with those removed, we can grab the panel, pull up on it and it will come out.Now we need to pull back the carpet on both sides of the vehicle. In order to do that, we have two plastic clips, one down low and one up high. Get behind there with our screwdriver or trim panel tool. Once you have that out partially, use a pair of needle nose pliers to grip it and then pull it out. Now we'll pull our carpet back. Now, this is out taillight connector right here, behind the carpet. In order to disconnect this, there's a tab right here. When we press in on the tap and pull back, it disconnects. Now we'll take our connector here that has the yellow wire. This is our driver's side connector, and we'll plug it in. We have a female end that goes to our taillight. So we'll take the male end of our connector, line up the tabs, push it in 'til it clicks. We'll pull plug the other end to the vehicle wiring harness. Now we'll take our module here, flip it over to the back side, take our double-sided tape, peel off one end, press it firmly against the back, peel off the other end. We've already gone ahead and cleaned off a flat surface in this area with some soapy water or rubbing alcohol, whatever you have, and this is where we'll place our module. For added security, we'll take a zip tie, go through one of the existing holes in the panel, wrap around the back and around our module. This will help hold it in place as well. Now this white wire with the ring terminal is our ground. We need to attach this to the vehicle's sheet metal. We'll use a provided self-tightening screw to do it in this area right here. That'll give us a good ground. Now we'll take one end of the black wire that comes with out kit, strip off some insulation, slide on one of our butt connectors, and we'll crimp it in place. Now, the black wire that comes off our module, let's strip off a little more insulation from that. We'll slide our black wire, the butt connector onto that and we'll crimp it in place. From this point forward every butt connector that we have, we'll wrap up with some electrical tape to help better protect it from the elements. Even though this connection's inside our car, there is the possibility of dirt and debris and moisture getting inside here. Now we need to find a place to pass our black power wire through that'll go up to our battery in the engine compartment, to provide a separate source of power for our module, to isolate our lighting system on the vehicle from the trailer wiring. There's a grommet right here that I'm pointing to. We'll drill a small hole in the middle of the grommet. We'll take our wire, push through the hole that we drilled, and we'll seal up the grommet where we drilled, where the wire passes through. This will seal and conceal it. We have this available on the website. This will prevent any moisture from getting inside and potential of any exhaust fumes as well. Now, we've taken our passenger side connector across our trunk area here. We'll unplug our passenger side connector in the same manner, by pushing on the tab and pulling back. We'll match up our connectors. Now, we'll reinstall all of our panels. So we'll take our wire that crossed over to the passenger side, place it behind our threshold panel, raise our threshold into place and push in on down into position. All right, we're underneath the car now. You can see where our power wire comes through our grommet, right here. We routed this to the front of the vehicle, making sure we avoided any moving parts, such as your suspension or any sources of heat, such as the exhaust. We went through the wheel liner here. We have it zip tied up through two holes in the frame to keep it away from our spring, as far as possible. Goes over our rear sub-frame. We have it zip tied up to a bracket for our brake line. We zip tied again to our frame, by our rear sub-frame mount. We zip tied up to a parking brake cable here, which does not move, so that's fine. Goes through a hole here, in a channel. Goes all the way through the channel, and so it comes out through this hole here.We us a piece of airline tubing in order to fish the wire through. We dropped down another piece of airline tubing from our engine department, down amongst the firewall. Then we'll pull our wire up, as we have it taped to that airline tubing mount. We'll zip tie up our wire right here, to a wiring harness that goes inside the firewall, cut off our excess slack, strip back some insulation, take our butt connector, stick it on, crimp it, take our fuse holder, which has one continuous link of wire, cut it in the middle so we have two separate ends, strip back both ends. Ring terminal goes on one, crimp it down. Other end goes to the butt connector, crimp it down.Open up our battery cover here to the positive terminal. Underneath our cover, we find a 12 millimeter nut. We'll remove this nut, slide our ring terminal over that stud, reinstall the nut, and we'll close our cover and install our fuse. Then close the dust cover up.Okay, now we're using 4-pole flat trailer tester, which we have available on our website, as part number I26, to test our wiring. The reason we're using a tester, versus just hooking up to our trailer, is this will verify that the vehicle's working properly, 'cause if we had a fault with the trailer, we wouldn't be able to tell if the vehicle itself is working okay.Turn on our headlights first. As you can see, our taillight and running light function's working properly. Left turn signal. Right turn signal. Brakes. Brakes with turn signal on. Perfect. Everything's working as intended. That completes our look at and installation of the Tekonsha T1 vehicle wiring harness with 4-ole flat trailer connector, part number 118640, on our 2012 Chevrolet Sonic.

Easy install, exactly as the videos depict with excellent detail. Item works as it should. With a manual transmission vehicle getting the black wire up through the firewall is a little harder as you have less room to operate (because of clutch pedal), but that is unavoidable. 486570

So far, easily installed and see how it does. Bought Curt brand (seems to have been discontinued) approx 3 years ago. It lost the ability to work the left signal, due to something in the "box" failing. In fairness, there were some wires touching on the trailer possibly causing damage to the box. This one seems more robust, plugged in the same, fit the same place with the box and the ground wire. Works. Now to see for how long. Trailer wires have been tied down and better protected... 550289

It sounds like your original converter box shorted out. The typical cause of this as you mentioned is a short in the trailer wiring. Once the short is repaired, you should have smooth sailing with your new taillight converter. If theres any spot on the trailer where the wires rub against the frame, using a length of wire loom like # 39035
Wire Loom, 3/8" Diameter, 10' Long
$5.78
would be perfect for protecting the wire from abrasion. If you have wiring passing through holes in the trailer frame, using a grommet is recommended.

Great wiring harness. Fairly simple and easy to install. Just make sure you have a panel tool otherwise you will break the clips that hold the interior panels in place. 659054

Works great and easy to install if you are patient and spend the time to properly pop the body panels loose and stuff the wires under the plastic trim. Go at least an inch or better under from the edge in the door wells or the plastic trim will sit up from the carpet making a lip. I used different wire connectors than the ones provided. 528045

Unfortunately the time harness did not work, the car is a Chevrolet agile ,same as the Chevrolet sonic built I believe in usa. This one is assembled in Argentina by Chevrolet Argentina. But the wiring is different. You look at the car outside and are twins ,but the guts are different.I will be returning to USA in April 2018 but I do not believe I can have a credit for my purchase being one year past. The product is in its original package and never used

Sharing my experience installing a draw-tite hitch and wiring harness on my 2014 Chev Sonic rs. This procedure went exactly as the descriptions and videos describe from etrailer. I found only two areas that were a bit tricky - even with a trim panel tool, a couple of my trim securing plastic fasteners broke, and when going through the firewall - bit hard to maneuver around clutch pedal. Note: Replacement interior panel fasteners are plentiful and readily available. I am mechanical, but a rookie hitch installer. The hitch installation took 25 minutes with the car on ramps. The harness took approximately 1.5 hours with most of my time focused on going through firewall and doing an orderly job underhood and using caution with interior. Connecting the splices at the rear lights and routing the wire through the interior of the Sonic is very simple just as the video depicts. Great kit for the Sonic rs, and it even tucks away very nicely from an appearance standpoint! 277970

This is a nice product, it works great (only did short hook up so far. Yes, it will take you some time to install. I did break one of the 'green' panel holders and he local Chevy dealer doesn't stock them, so I put panel back on with out it. I also ran my 12 volt wire thru the spare tire tube. I drilled a 1/2" hole and got a .25 cent flat rubber disk from ACE. Then ran wire thru same path as fuel and rear brake lines. It was nice I could use car without 12 volt to black box so I could get the parts. Sorry, didn't take any pictures. 71902

Made one long trip 1,200 each way with 4x8 trailer. Empty on way out but total 700-750 on way back. Hitch and lights worked great. I also got a carrier so I can haul 5 gallon gas on back and not inside car needed 1 to 2 tube, but it also works good.

Installation was pretty simple, great quality clips/box/wires/etc., only down side is it didn't come with the 12 gauge power wire to run to the battery. Well worth the 80 bucks to not cut wires and such. If you need lights for whatever you are pulling, get this kit. 32797

The picture shows the 12 ga wire that is needed to supply power to the unit that has to be run to the vehicle battery but the needed 12ga wire has to be procured in order for the kit to work. Misleading to me.

  • There were two models of the Chevrolet Sonic lt in 2012. One is a 4-door sedan and the other model is a 5-door hatchback. If you have a 4-door sedan then the trailer hitch I recommend is part # 24876. This is a Class l trailer hitch and it has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. For a 5-door hatchback I recommend part # 24878. This is also a Class l hitch with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. • There is no drilling required to install Curt trailer hitch # C11258 on your 2013 Chevy Sonic. Installation is estimated between 1/2 hour and 1-1/2 hours depending on your level of ability and whether or not you have someone to help. You will not have to remove or trim anything either. • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2012 Chevy Sonic Hatchback
  • For a hitch for your 2012 Chevy Sonic hatchback I would recommend the Draw Tite Hitch part # 24878 as it is the most popular hitch we offer confirmed to fit your vehicle. This hitch has a 200 lb tongue weight and 2,000 lb total trailer weight capacity so you will need to be sure the trailer weighs less than that when totally loaded. Also, you will need to check the owners manual of your vehicle to determine what Chevy says is your towing capacities. The lower of the two sets of capacities...

  • Does Trailer Wiring Harness Come with the Curt Trailer Hitch for a 2013 Chevy Sonic RS
  • The trailer wiring harness is not included with Curt trailer hitch # C11398 for your 2013 Chevy Sonic RS. The reason is because not everyone who installs a hitch is using it for towing or accessories that have lights. By making it separate the hitch price can be lower. To add a trailer wiring harness you can use # 118640. This will add a 4-Way flat connector to the rear of the vehicle. I have linked a video showing an example installation for you.

  • Needing Trailer Wiring Harness to Operate Reverse Lamps on Trailer
  • The Tow Ready T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness you referred to, part # 118640 will feed the trailer running lamps, brake lamps and right and left directional signals, but not reverse lamps. We do not have a plug and play wiring harness option that would provide a 5-pole, but you could hardwire one using part # 119177KIT. You would use the tester included in the kit to test the wires feeding the factory taillight assemblies to locate which wire carries the right turn, left turn, brake lamp,...

  • Will Tow Ready Trailer Wiring # 118640 Affect the Tail Light Wiring on a 2012 Chevy Sonic
  • The Tow Ready wiring harness, # 118640, plugs in line with the tail light wiring on your 2012 Chevy Sonic, but it receives the power for the trailer lights from the vehicle battery. There will only be a very minimal draw on the vehicle wiring because the harness only uses the connection to the tail lights to receive the signals to send to the trailer lights. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you.
