Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels of your rear cargo area. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery and insert the provided fuse.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed within the spare tire compartment of your rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2017 Hyundai Tucson

Today on our 2017 Hyundai Tuscan, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Tekonsha 00:00:04 T-one vehicle wiring harness, part number 118501. Now this is what we're going to get in the kit. You're going to get your power wire, full pull flat, your modular box that has your ground wire, your rubber grommet, this is going to be for your driver's side tail lights, this is going to be the connection for your passenger's side tail lights, this is going to be a fuse holder for your 10 amp fuse. First thing to start our installation, we're going to take out our driver's side tail light. We're going to take a screwdriver and we're just going to pop this cap. We're gaining access to these two bolts. Take a phillips-head screwdriver and we're just going to gently pull out. What we want to take off, this wiring harness right here.

All you do is push in on that and it releases it. You're going to do the same process to your passenger's side. Now per our instructions it says to take out the floor covering and to access the rubber grommet that's down here inside the vehicle. In doing that this would hang out of the vehicle through the tailgate. Our customer has requested we just run it right down through our bumper by our tail light and run it across so that this is outside on the hitch all the time. The first thing we're going to do is on our power wire, we're going to attach a butt connector, heat shrink butt connector. Now, your kit comes, if you decide to do it this way your kits going to come with a plastic one.

I like to, anything that's going to be outside the vehicle I like to use a heat shrink butt connector, it just kind of helps to protect it better from the weathering. We're going to put our heat shrink butt connector on our red wire, crimp it. We're going to take one end of our black wire, trim it, and we're going to put it on the other end. What I'm going to do, instead of feeding all that wiring down, I have a string and I just have a nut from the shop. I'm just going to drop it down there to the bottom. I'm going to take my wiring, make a loop through it, and pull our wiring up like this. Put it on until you hear it click. You're going to take the other end and you're going to hook it onto your tail light.

Now, from here we can reinstall our tail light. Then reinstall your cover. Since we're not going to be using this grommet, we're going to go ahead and get rid of it. We're going to take our T-connector that's going to our passenger side and our 4-way, and we're going to feed it up behind the existing plastic bumper holders here. Now, we're just going to feed our 4-way through the first one and our passenger side T-connector, we're going to take it behind all of them. I'm going to go up and over the bumper brace, because of the exhaust I don't want my wire crossing over the exhaust here cuz of the heat. Next what we're going to do is we're going to mount the converter box.

You want to make sure you have a clean space to do it, that whatever you're mounting to is going to be clean. Take your 2-sided tape, press it firmly in place there, find a spot and then press it firmly into place. We're going to take the wires that are here and we're going to zip tie them to these existing wires. What I'm going to do is I'm just going to feed a little bit here just to kind of make sure when I zip tie this up I have enough here that when I connect to my trailer I'm not pulling it too tight. Now that we have that I'm going to go ahead and zip tie the rest of this. Now we're going to repeat the same process to pull our wiring up here on the passenger's side. What I'm going to do is I'm going to take my ground wire and just going to mount it to the metal here. You just want to put it in tight enough where it doesn't move. Since our customer wanted their wiring outside, we went ahead and mounted a four pole bracket and short bracket which you can find at etrailer.com. I'm going to go ahead and run this power wire. Since the power wire is up against this metal here, I'm going to take a little bit of wire loom and then I'm going to run it up to the front to the positive side of the battery. Let me get that ran real quick and I'll show you how I did it. What I did with the power wire is you want to stay away from any moving parts. What I like to do I try to find a brake line or existing wiring from the manufacture and try to follow that. Right here we follow the break line up, come past this spring, break lines up here, follow the side of the fuel tank here, and fed it underneath of this. You can't see it but it's actually run up top on here, across here, and we're going to go right up to the top up to the battery. See the red tube up there. That's just an air line tube that I had laying around the shop. What I did prior is I went up by the battery, fed the wire down from my spot, fed the wire down so that I can take this wire, my power wire, and feed it into the inside of the airline and just pull it straight up through and it will follow the line that I had already picked out. That's what we're going to do, is we're going to take our fuse holder, we're going to cut it in half, take off both ends, heat shrink butt connector put it on one end, crimp it down. Check it to make sure it's tight. We're going to take our included ring terminal and put it on the other end, crimp it down, and make sure it's tight. Make sure you don't have this fuse inside this holder when you hook it onto the battery. That's going to be the last thing we do. Next we're going to go ahead and we're going to cut our black wire that we ran up from the back. Strip it. We're going to take the other end, with our heat shrink butt connector and crimp it down. On the positive side we're just going to off this nut here and that's where our ring terminal is going to go. So what I did is through the back of this box there's a cut out that goes down to the bottom. Instead of cutting out a notch in the door I just fed it up through the bottom there, we'll feed it right over to the nut. Replace our nut. Now that we have everything connected we can go ahead and put our fuse in. Now that we have everything hooked up we're going to go ahead and test is out using part number I26. Break lights. Left blinker. Right blinker. Running lights. That will do it for the Tekonsha 00:09:40 T-one vehicle wiring harness with four pull flat trailer connector, part number 118501 on our 2017 Hyundai Tucson.

Trailer light harness for 2018 Tuscon works great! I installed my own way and are pleased with results. Could not find harness anywhere else. NOT EVEN DEALERS! Thanks etrailer 739391

I ordered this hitch primarily to hook a cargo carrier to the car, but also for light duty trailer pulling. The instructions along with the website video made for a 30 minute easy installation by myself. I also ordered the trailer wiring harness, which was also fairly easy to install although as expected took longer to complete. I’m very satisfied with my purchase. 557405

Watch online video, provides a much clearer directions than provide instructions. Hardest part of install was running wiring under car. I am a large person so clearance was a little tight for me, system worked perfectly once install was completed. Average person should be able to handle this installation. 563660

The product is great - four stars because of installation. The installation is complicated and will take a long time to do well. So, I bailed out and paid a mechanic to do it. It took the mechanic 90 minutes - labor costs were about $150. Our purchase of the light kit, the hitch mount (we installed ourselves) and the mount and ball all totaled under $200 for our Hyundai Tuscon. The dealer price was $579. So I was all in for $350 ish with paying for the light kit installation, still two hundred less than having the dealer do it. 409675

This is a good product but installation was not as easy as suggested. The wires leading to the Driver's side tailight should be longer. The printed instructions were not particularly clear, especially when finding the spot to mount the control box and in dealing with the rubber plug that goes through the body. The video was only helpful to a point because it shows mounting everything on the outside of the vehicle and this kit is designed to be mounted inside. I was able to make things work, but it took some imagination and over three hours. 521899

Everything was ok with this till you try to reinstall tail lights, The T connectors are close to one another and need more length to drop extra plug down into body, Extra connector stops tail light from mounting between body and light fixture, Other than that it's ok. 391638

Connector corroded before I could even use harness had to replace with another connector even with supplied cover. Other than that problem everything else is fine and still would buy from them again

I received the harness on time with three day shipping. It took about 1 1/2 hours to install. Any time I got confused, I watched your video. The directions are very good, but having the video for my vehicle made it a breeze! The lights run off the car battery, instead of the existing wires, eliminating short circuits. 100% better than the $15 harness I was going to get. The light plugs fit perfectly! NO SPLICING WIRES! I highly recommend this harness! 310133

Just used a rental trailer last week. The harness actually got compliments on the the harness system from the rental employees for how neat the harness was! I told him I got it online at E-trailer.com. He will be a customer for sure.

Instructions were garbage. You cannot run the power wire under the car. I ran my power line through the fire wall down the passenger side. I pulled up all of the paneling and crossed it behind my spare tire. Then I tried it in inside of the car instead of under. Also the method it says about running the passenger side T harness was also frustrating. This kit should come with loom to protect it from the sharp edges. It took 3 hours to run it. First 2 was trying to do it via instructions. Then the other 1 hour was pulling all the paneling. The yellow connectors it came with were trash and wouldn’t take a crimp. I used mine no problems. 739440

When I opened up the shipping box that held both the trailer hitch and the wiring kit I wasn't really super impressed. The box with the wiring kit was already cut open and has a lot of damage from (what I'm assuming) was the staples that held the shipping box closed. None of the wires look damaged at all so that's a plus. Theres also a small but pretty decent gouge in the frame of the hitch. I'll just cover it up with some clear nail polish to keep it from rusting. Still excited to use it though. 734123

Wiring for the driver's side is about 3" too short, it's workable but close. The hitch went on very easily, about 20 minutes, and that was laying on the ground to install. I'm 70 years old and did it by myself. Great product. The tester I26 made checking the wiring very easy. Items arrived on time and I'm good condition. Very happy with my purchase. 720465

When our tech team installed Tow Ready wiring harness # 118501 in a 2012 model year Tucson the grommet used for running the wiring through the trunk pan was located near the bottom of the frame rail. See the linked video at the 1:35 mark. This may differ slightly on your 2016 model year since it is of a different generation of the Tucson. It is sometimes easier to find those grommets from underneath the car. Since we have not yet seen a 2016 Tucson for installation of this harness we...

  • Why is a Dedicated Power Wire Needed to Install Part # 118501 on a Hyundai Tuscon
The reason the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness, # 118501 requires a power wire is that your Tuscon requires a harness that provides the power from the vehicle battery and keeps the amperage draw from the trailer lights off of the taillight circuits. The wiring harness uses the vehicles taillight circuits to trigger the lighting functions for the trailer but will not draw power from the taillight circuits to light the trailer lights. • Troubleshooting Trailer Connector on 2016 Hyundai Tucson Not Sending Power
It sounds like there is a problem with the OEM wiring on your 2016 Hyundai Tucson. You can try following the wiring that is giving you issues to see if there is damage and check your fuses. If you have a lot of lights on your trailer you may be overloading the circuit which is causing a fuse to blow. If the fuses and wiring looks good then I recommend installing the Tekonsha T-One # 118501 so that you bypass the OEM wiring. This plugs in behind your tail lights and then draws power directly...

I cannot recommend attaching the power wire to the vehicle tail light harness as it could possibly overload the circuit and/or damage the vehicle wiring. • Trailer Hitch Fit for 2018 Hyundai Tucson
The Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 75772 that fit your 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe will not fit your brand new 2018 Hyundai Tucson. Not to worry though because there is a Class III, 2" hitch that does fit the '18 Tucson, the Draw-Tite # 75836; I have added a photo showing exactly how this hitch will look when installed on an '18 Tucson so you can check out how your car will look when it has this hitch on. The # 75836 will be mostly concealed but it won't require any type of trimming into your...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2017 Hyundai Tucson
Whenever available we recommend going with a 2 inch hitch like the Draw Tite part # 75836 that is a fit for your 2017 Hyundai Tucson. This will have more than enough capacity and since it's the most popular hitch size will have the most accessories made for it. I attached and install video for this hitch for you to check out as well. For trailer wiring you'd then want the part # 118501 which is also a confirmed fit. Since you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2016 Hyundai Tucson
Yes, the Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 75836 will fit your 2016 Hyundai Tucson. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2018 Hyundai Tucson for Towing
For your 2018 Hyundai Tucson the trailer hitch I recommend is the Draw Tite part # 75836 because it has the best towing capacities, is easy to install and has a concealed crosstube which means it will be less visible. I attached a picture to show you what it looks like installed and a link to an install video for you to check out as well. For trailer wiring you'd then want the T-One kit part # 118501 which is a custom fit which means the install won't require splicing and because it...

  • How to Access the Taillight Wiring on the 2011 Hyundai Tucson for Installing a 5-Way Trailer Harness
To access the wires that supply power to the tail lights at the rear of the 2011 Hyundai Tuscon, you will need to remove two Phillips head screws that hold the tail light assemblies in place, see photo link. After the screws are removed, carefully work the tail light assembly straight out from the rear of the vehicle, wiggling it slightly side to side. Once you have the tail light assembly pulled away from the vehicle you will be able to access the wiring connectors for installing a...

  • Troubleshooting Curt Trailer Wiring Harness Installed on 2010 Hyundai Tucson
Unless your trailer is unusually well lit, the # C56348 wiring harness should have plenty of capacity. From your description, it sounds like your converter has an internal short that is allowing the 12-volt feed from the battery feed back into the vehicle taillights. You can confirm this by using a circuit tester like part # 40376 on the inputs of the converter. With the vehicle shut off, you should only see power on the 12-volt battery feed. If you find power on any of the other wires,...

  • Class II Hitch and Wiring for a 2014 Hyundai Tucson
I can help you get all the correct parts you'll need to tow with your 2014 Hyundai Tucson; it isn't technically a kit that comes in a complete package, so the parts will need to be added to your online cart separately. For a Class II hitch on your '14 Tucson, you would want the Draw-Tite # 36510, and to add a 4-flat connector you would need T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118501. The Draw-Tite hitch has a 1-1/4" receiver, and the recommended ball mount is # 36051, which comes with the...
