Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels in your rear cargo area.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed within your trunk or rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. The tail light converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2003 Toyota Highlander

Today on our 2003 Toyota Highlander, well be installing Tow Ready T-1 connector, part 118413. To begin our installation, well need remove the rear cargo cover, the spare tire cover, inside compartment cover; well also remove the panels behind the taillights. With all of our interior removed from the vehicle, well now have access to our wiring. Well need to unplug the harness at the connector just behind the taillight. With the connector unplugged, well feed the brown and yellow wire from our T-1 connector up behind the body panel to our taillight assembly. We can then connect the factory harness into one side of our T-1 connector and the other side well plug in to the taillight.

With that done, well need to make a ground here on the drivers side for the white wire. We use the supplied self-tapping screw and our quarter inch bit driver to make our grind. Well need to make sure that we grind into a body panel. Now, that our ground is made and our connections are done on the left side, well need to mount our module box. Now, the module box comes with a piece of two-sided tape already adhered to the box itself.

Well need to find a suitable location for our converter box. Now, that weve mounted the converter box, well need to run our red and green wire across to the passenger side. At the passenger side, well pass the T-1 connector up underneath the panel to our taillight connector. Well undo the connector and again, plug the factory side of the connector into our T-1 connector and the other side into our taillight. Thatll complete our connections.

Now, when using your harness, youll simply remove it from the cargo area and drape it outside to your hitch. You can then simple close the cargo door on the wire, as the molding is soft enough that it wont damage the wire. You will want to make sure you stay away from the latch, as the latch could damage the wires. There you have it for our Tow Ready T-1 connector, part number 118413 on our 2003 Toyota Highlander.

My Highlander already had a system like this in place. After 8 years, however, I began to have "weird" problems. Like when I put on the brakes, the right trailer light would come on and blink! After troubleshooting, I decided the wiring T-harness must be bad. I ordered this one and was able to put it in place quickly and easily. It solved all my trailer light problems!!! Outstanding product with exceptional customer service. While I hope this harness lasts as long as my Highlander, if I need other trailer related items, etrailer will be my FIRST stop!! 431620

I was looking to purchase a trailer hitch and wiring assembly for my 2005 Toyota Highlander. What I found on the internet was a company called "etrailer.com". This company had videos showing how to install their hitch and wiring assembly for my year and model. The installation looked easy with NO wire cutting. I ordered both parts. George J from e.trailer followed up with a series of emails letting me know that my ordered and on it's way with tracking info. The order was received on time and when unpackaged everything was of high quality. My son and I installed everything in a little over 30 minutes. The videos were spot on and made installation a snap! It was a pleasure to work with this company. Jim M. Fredericksburg, VA 447327

Hi, Great company to do buisness with. I orded all the parts and they arrived in a timely manner. The box did arrive with huge hole in it due to the good ole post office not etrailer. Thanks to the way etrailer packed it nothing was lost. Yay etralier. It was easy to install just took the old 4 bolts and tow bars down and put up the new hitch and new 6 bolts. Only took about 5 minutes. The video instuctions for the wiring made it easy also maybe took 7 miutes to do wiring. Thanks etrailer for making and easy project even a girl can do. :- 76921

Part of my job is leading the electrical trades group and quality is of utmost importance to me, it equates to longevity. I can't stand splices using using those cheap automotive connectors that become loose so when I saw this hitch kit I was pleased. It is non-invasive, clean and fantastically well-built. I always take too much time installing this type of thing and I put it in in my spare time in less than 30 minutes. you don't need to be an electrician to install, a DIY novice can do just as great of a job as an electrician, the brains are in the design. Thank you for making this available, I will be showing this to my team. 43532

Ordered the Curt Class III Round Tube Receiver Hitch - 2004 Toyota Highlander and wiring pkg with 3-5 day shipping. Vendor responded within an hour and the pkg arrived 3 days later. Installation was straightforward, holes lined up perfectly. I'm far from a master mechanic, and would've had it done in under 40 minutes except for the mud gumming up one of the holes in the frame (live on a dirt road that becomes a mud road each spring). The installation video for the hitch and wiring was indispensible for me. Now just need to get the trailer. 132693

I'm not very experienced with auto repairs/upgrades, but this was relatively easy, even for this 66 year old grandpa!! The eTrailer video covers it very well, and the only issue I had was that the adhesive-backed part didn't stick. (Yes, I took off the backing first). They even included zip ties to keep it neat. One thing I noticed after the fact, and redid, was that in the black tray on the driver's side there is a notch on the outside wall location. In the middle of that notch there is about a 5/8 inch slot that I believe Toyota provided expressly to route out the 4 prong adapter wire. No doubt to make it easy on their dealers. That's the place to route it out from behind the panel. (See pic). Also, I bought a Hopkins model 48625 tester that you hook up to your project to see if it is working properly. It shows you if the tail lights work, and the left and right turn signals. (You start the car, turn on the lights and work them from the drivers seat). If I have any trailer problems in the future, it allows one to test the car separately, and if that is working, then it must be with the trailer. I'm glad I bought it. Overall, a great kit. I recommend it. ETrailer shipped immediately and it came without any damage. 257621

Seems to me, there was something different on my car in terms of the wiring but it all worked out fine in the end. I also think the bolts were not the same as the threaded holes in my car. I just bought the correct size. Most importantly, the whole hitch fit perfectly, as advertised. It's rugged and after a year it still looks like new-no rust, the finish is perfect. I tow a small boat with it routinely. 673782

The typical culprit for wiring issues is a bad ground. If you re-install this and you are still having problems I recommend checking all the grounds to see if that is the issues. Occasionally the modulites do go out, and you can test the functions coming in and going out and if they do not match then the modulite is bad. I have attached a help article that provide details for troubleshooting both of these issues.

The trailer electrical wiring kit simplified the who installation, and is virtually idiot-proof. I had a little trouble threading the connectors through the body panels, but made it work, and used 12 zip ties instead of the 2 that they provide. No problem in any way. 596884

I’m not a mechanical person so it might not be your fault but the wiring doesn’t seem to work on left side of vehicle. 570932

Comments

If its the circuits on one side that arent working, typically the problem can be found at the connection point where the trailer wiring harness taps into the vehicles wiring. Please check those connections, making sure that the connectors are fully seated until the connectors click.

Generally, the wiring harness arrived quickly and in good shape. It was pretty easy to install. My only criticism is that the pictures provided on the directions weren't very good. Also, I recommend buying a 4-way flat connector tester (which etrailer sells) for about 5 bucks to be sure every thing works well before you attach a trailer to your rig. 506591

  • How To Determine If 2003 Toyota Highlander Has The Factory Tow Package
  • if your 2003 Toyota Highlander has a tow package plug located in the driver's side rear cargo area under the floor (see instructions for installing Item # 118413 on where to look) then your Highlander has the tow package. If you find a plug, use a circuit tester like Item # 40376 to check to see if it is active. If you do not find a plug or the one you find is not active then you do not have a tow package. • Why Does Curt # C55400 Wiring Harness Require Wire to Battery and Tekonsha # 118413 Does Not
  • Some vehicles cannot handle the additional amperage draw of the trailer lights on their taillight circuits, so a wire is required to pull power directly from the battery instead. According to Tekonsha, your vehicle is equipped to handle the extra load, so you would be fine with the Tekonsha T-One Wiring Harness # 118413, especially if you are towing a trailer with just one set of lights at the back and no extra lighting. This is another way it protects the wiring. The part # 118413 does not use a wire like that. Since I prefer that type of install since it's safer I would...

If your Highlander has a wiring connector just behind the rear bumper then you have the factory tow package. In which case I recommend using # 118245 for the wiring harness. If you...

  • How to Determine if 2006 Toyota Highlander Has the Factory Tow Package
  • If your Highlander has an active tow package plug located in the driver's side rear of the cargo area under the floor (see linked instructions for part # C56107 to see where plug is located and how to access it) your Highlander has the tow package. If you find the plug, use a circuit tester like part # 40376 to ensure it's active. Probe the contacts of the plug as a helper activates each lighting function. If you don't find the plug, or if its NOT active, you don't have the tow package. There's...

  • Factory Trailer Wiring Harness Connection Point on a 2001 Toyota Highlander
  • If your 2001 Toyota Highlander came with a factory tow package then there is a connection underneath. But if it did not come with a tow package the connector will either A) not be there or B) not be functional. On vehicles that have the connector it is located behind the rear bumper. On some, it is located behind the bumper and inside of a plastic box. Take a look at the instructions I have linked for harness # 118245 which should help you locate the harness if it is present on the...

  • Does My 2007 Highlander Hybrid have the Tow Package Wiring Connector
  • To determine if you could use the Tow Ready wiring harness part # 118248 on your 2007 Toyota Highlander the most efficient way would be to determine if you have the trailer wiring connector on your vehicle, and then use a circuit tester like part # 3808 to determine if the pins on it are active. If both of those things check out the # 118248 would work well for you. To see where this connector is check out the 45 second mark of the install video I attached to the right. Otherwise...
