Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the rear tire, on the passenger's side.

Once installation is complete, the 7-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plug on your automobile and the 7-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Video Transcript for T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness Installation - 2018 Ford Explorer

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Ford Explorer, we're going to be taking a look at, I'm going to show you how to install, the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Packages with Seven-Way Trailer Connector, part number 118272.This is what our wiring looks like when it's installed. It's going to provide you with all the necessary function you need for your trailer, both turn signals, your running lights, your brake lights, reverse light signal and also a signal for your brakes if you have trailer brakes. It's going to have a nice, durable, plastic cover, spring loaded cap. The cap's going to have a rubber seal in it. It's going to seal around here, it's going to keep any moisture or anything like that from getting on your connections.Your wire is going to come equipped with some wire loom to help protect it. The seven-pole plug will fit in a variety of different seven-pole holders or brackets.

As far as the installation, it is a very simple installation. It's going to plug directly into your factory wiring. All you need to do is route it over to where you're wanting to attach it to your hitch, and mount it in that location. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed. This is what you're going to get in your kit. You're going to get your wiring harness.

It's going to connect into your factory tow package wiring. Your seven-pole plug, and your connector that's going to connect your wiring into your plug along with some zip ties. Along with your kit, I suggest getting some longer zip ties. You're going to need a seven-pole bracket. You're also going to need a short bracket and some dielectric grease.

This is going to help keep your connections from corroding. What we need to do is on our passenger side, you're going to see a plug right here. We need to unplug that, so we're going to push in the tab and pull out. You'll see our two connections. We're going to put a little bit of dielectric grease on our connectors, and then we're just going to match our plugs. Push them in until you hear them click.

What we're going to do with our wiring, we're going to go up behind the bumper. The reason is is there's nowhere to run it across here without getting close to the exhaust. We want to make sure we stay away from any heat source.I'm going to take an airline tube, you can use a wire hanger, anything that has a little bit of stiffness to it. We're going to feed it up behind the bumper fascia. We're going to come around and we're going to reach up like that. Now, we're going to take the end of our wire, tape it to the end of our airline tube. Make sure I cover those connections good, I don't want to damage the metal ends. We want to just slowly start to pull this up and over the top. It can be a little bit of a pain to get it up and over the top of that. It's got to go up pretty high and over the top or else it'll get stuck. Or it'll feel like it's stuck. It is a little bit of a pain. However, it's going to save you a lot of time and trouble later on, because this heat is not going to affect the wiring. Now what we'll do is we're going to run this over just like this. We're going to be connecting it about here, so go over top of our back of our hitch here like this. Then, we can remove our airline tube or hanger or whatever it is that you're using. Now, we're going to make our connections into the back of our plug. You can see the way this is facing, this is where you would release it off the back of your seven-pole plug. Brown, that one, that's bottom left corner here. Blue is going to go into this bottom right corner. White is going to go into this large hole over on the right side. Red is going to go just above the white. Going to go yellow, is going to go right into the center. Black is going to go right here onto the left center. Then, our green is going to go into this top left hole. What we're doing is you see that open side On the inside, there's a little tab. That little tab is what locks it into place, so we need to just get that turned so it will slide all the way in there. Going to lock that into place like that. Once we get our wires installed, we're going to take a little clip that comes in our kit. We'll slide it in like this. We're just going to pop it into place. That's going to hold our wire down.I'm going to take my included screws. I'm going to mount my seven-pole bracket to my short bracket first. Put our screws in. Take our two included nuts, then we'll just take a Phillips or flathead screwdriver, tighten it into place. What we have determined is that if we put our short bracket like this, our seven-pole is not going to fit here. Then, we won't be able to get our plug onto the back. What we're going to have to do is remove this, and we're going to flip it over. Hook our bracket on like this, and this is going to face down. Now, we're going to take our included inaudible 00:05:47 going to come up behind our hitch. Then, we'll get it tightened into place with a flathead screwdriver. Then, we can just cut off our excess. Next, we'll install our seven-pole plug with the included screws and nuts. We'll have one for each corner. Then, we'll tighten them down with a flathead screwdriver. You want to make sure that these . You don't tighten these real tight, because you don't want to crack the plastic housing on your seven-pole plug. Now, we'll take some dielectric grease again, add it to our connectors here. Plug that right into. Then, we'll take some of our longer zip ties and secure the rest of our wiring right up to the back of our hitch. Then, we can come back, cut off our excess.Next, we'll test out our wiring using an alternate power source. Left turn, right turn, brake lights, running lights. That'll do it for a look at and installation on the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Packages with Seven-Way Trailer Connector, part number 118272, on our 2018 Ford Explorer.

Product looks good however I haven't installed it yet due to the fact that I didn't order the mounting bracket for the plug. For others, you need to order the mounting bracket for this item unless you plan on drilling your bumper or vehicle body. 260208

Just what I needed to replace my damaged wiring harness. This one is made 10 times better than what the dealership had originally "hacked job" installed... only thing left to do is add the electric brake controller. But glad my wife's explorer is back to working with a trailer attached. Thanks again etrailer for the grrat product and for answering my questions. 773168

Normally I dont take the time to write a review, if I'm happy I keep the product, if not I return it. This is one of the few times I dont mind writing a review. Took me 10 minutes to install. The directions are clear and easy to follow. I reviewed the video after I finished and it's not really necessary, maybe a better explanation of wire routing and secuing. 2 suggestions I would like to make. First is include the mounting bracket with the harness. I made my own on the fly, but not everyone will have time or ability to do that. Secondly team up with another company to sell a "new installation kit" I bought the Reese Towpower Trailer Hitch 84034 for my explorer and had to find a wiring harness separate. Would have made it alot easier if I found both in one shot. Total install time was roughly an hour. I installed the trailer hitch first and then worked on the harness. I should have started with the harness so I could easily route the cable, install the hitch then finish on the cable. Live and learn. Hitch was 45 minutes, wiring was 10, and made a bracket in about 2. 756240

Plug-n-play literally. Had an aftermarket hitch installed on my 2018 explorer with a 4 pin connector for a u-haul car hauler. Working on getting my own flatbed car hauler and need the brake controller hookup. Easy instructions - too easy, had to look at it for a minute before realizing how easy it was. Would be better with a mounting bracket but was able to zip tie to the bumper next to the hitch. 749532

I own a 2012 Ford Explorer Limited. This SUV was missing the wiring harness for the 7 way trailer plug. It also has the 4 rear proximity sensors for rear parking. This is the correct harness (118272) for my Explorer. Everything plugs in directly and has the correct plug for the Proximity Sensors. One thing you will have to do is connect each wire into the back of the 7 way. Directions and wire colors are correct. The wire ends will snap into the back of the 7 way. They only go in one way, so make sure you have the wire ends oriented the correct way, don't force anything. I tested the 7 way and the proximity sensors and everything is correct. The only issue is, this does not come with the 4 way connector. Which I don't need. If I ever do, I will just tap into the current harness and purchase the OEM 4 way Ford connector. 720010

Product shipped quickly! Went together exactly like the videos. The reason for only 4 stars was the zip ties were too small and the bracket to attach the plug had screws to drill into the bumper but we wanted to bolt onto the provided bracket on the hitch. 634368

After having an awful experience with a large chain camping store with the installation of the wiring on my vehicle. I was able to undo all the damage they did and use item #118272 to wire up my vehicle with a 7 point plug. It took me about 10 mins to wire the adapter in, while it took the company over 8 hours to cut into my wires (with only turn signals working) instead of using this adapter. Everything worked with no issues and was easy to install as the provided video described. 523604

  • Recommended 7-Way Wiring Connector for a 2016 Ford Explorer
It sounds like you have found the rectangular plug that is indeed used for the trailer wiring. The 7-Way that I recommend using is the Tekonsha T-One # 118272 because we have found the Tekonsha wiring products to be very reliable. You can use the mounting brackets # PK12711U and # C57202 to secure the 7-Way connector to the rear of your 2016 Ford Explorer. I have attached a video of this connector being installed on a similar 2016 Explorer that you can reference. It also shows where...

However, you will need to activate it by putting your foot to the side of the hitch receiver opening with both hitches. The sensors will not recognize your foot through the hitch unfortunately. You would not need to relocate any sensors either. I've linked videos of both hitches being installed for you....

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendations for a 2013 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor
First, we have had reports that Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" Item # 76034 does fit the 2013 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor model. When adding a 4-Way trailer connector, # HM40285, to the Explorer it does require a direct connection to the vehicle battery so it does have a powered converter. But your Explorer might be factory prewired for a trailer connector. Check under the vehicle for the factory wiring as shown in the video I have linked...

  • 2018 Ford Explorer XLT 4 and 7-Way Recommendation
For your 2018 Ford Explorer the Hopkins 7 and 4-Way kit you'd need is the part # 118272. This will plug right into the square connector you have at the rear of the vehicle and will give you a 7-way you need. To convert it to a 4 and 7-way then you'd need the part # HM40975. I attached an install video for this connector on a 2018 Ford Explorer just like yours for you to check out as well. You will need to install a brake controller too to activate the trailer brakes. For a brake controller...

  • Trailer Wiring Recommendation for 2016 Ford Explorer Towing Trailer with Surge Brakes
Typically if boat trailer has surge brakes and a reverse lockout solenoid it uses a 5-way in nearly all situations. It is very possible a 7-way could be used but it's not as likely. Either way we can help though. For your 2016 Ford Explorer without the factory towing package we have the 7-Way kit part # 118272 whic his a custom fit that will install easily. If your trailer has a round plug for it's connector this would be all that you need. If instead it's a flat 5 pin connector you'd...

  • Recommended Trailer Wiring Harness for 2018 Ford Explorer
If you just need a simple 4-way trailer connector on your 2018 Ford Explorer then I recommend the Tekonsha, part # 118540. It plugs in to connectors under the rear of your Explorer on the passenger's side. On the other hand if you need a 7-way connector I recommend part # 118272. It plugs into the same location. If you want the best of both worlds you can get the 7-way harness, part # 118272 that I mentioned, and not use the connector it comes with but instead use part # HM40950. This...

  • 7 and 4-Way Recommendation for 2018 Ford Explorer without Tow Package
Your best option for installing both a 7-way and a 4-way on your 2018 Ford Explorer without the tow package is the T-One 7-way kit part # 118272 that you referenced and then swapping the 7-way out for the # HM40975 so that you have both connector styles. Once you do that you'd be set!

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendation for 2018 Ford Explorer
For your 2018 Ford Explorer the Draw Tite hitch part # 76034 is the option I recommend. It has the highest towing capacities of the hitches available which means it is the strongest and because you'll be able to retain the use of your hands free liftgate by simply kicking your foot to either side of the hitch opening. I attached an install video for this hitch for you to check out as well. For trailer wiring you'd want the part # 118272 for if you need a 7-way or part # 118540 for if...
