Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Today on our 1997 Jeep Wrangler, we're going to be installing the T1 Vehicle Wiring Harness with the 4 pull flat trailer connector. Part number is 118356. Now right in here in the rear corner of the vehicle both in the driver's side and passenger side there's going to be this little plastic panel. What we want to do, there's a little push fastener right here. We're going to pull that out, and that'll allow us to drop this cover down, and we'll get it out of the way far enough to where we can get up inside here and work. What we're looking for inside is going to be this plug right here.

That's the plug that goes up to our wiring. Right here in the back side's our locking tab, so we want to push up on that and we'll separate that connector just like that. Now let's head over to the passenger side and we'll do the same thing. Pull up on that tab, separate that. See how there's a bunch of dirt and grime on there Well as a Jeep owner they've done a good job making it a Jeep, but we need to just clean that up so we don't have anything in our way. We want to make sure we get a good connection and sometimes dirt and debris can interfere with that.

Now let's grab our harness. Now we're going to take some of the dielectric grease that we have here at eTrailer, and we just want to fill in those connectors a little bit, just to help keep any water, and dust and debris, stuff like that out. This is part number 11755. What we'll do is take our male side here, this is going to get slid into the female side of our factory connector. Once it's in there, give it a couple pushes, pulls, make sure everything's nice and secure, and then we'll do the same thing up here. Now let's start guiding the green and white side over towards the passenger's connection point.

Now as we route this we want to stay away from heat sources and things like that, but we should be able to lay this right across the top of the bumper just by going over the frame rail here, and then sliding out between the top side of our bumper and the bottom side of the tub of the Jeep itself. Guided the 4 pull through there, now we'll just pull out the slat. Pull this over here towards the middle, that's where we're going to want it. We'll keep going with the green and white wire, then we'll tuck it right back in on the passenger side here where we pulled it out on the driver's side. We'll pull up, we're ready to make our T connection and our ground connection right here at our frame point.

Now let's get a little grease on the connections here and get these put up into place. As you can see it's a really easy wiring kit to install, just plug and play setup here. Now we'll take our white ground wire here. We're going to find a good ground source, we'll just go right off the bumper here and we'll get that tied in. It uses the self tapping screw that's provided. Now that we've got that hole drilled, let's rough up that surface a little bit. You could use sandpaper, or a screw driver, or just going to use a little rotary tool. Just get it cleaned up so we'll get good contact there. Get our wire back in. Then since we bared that metal up, we'll clean it up just slightly. Now we can pull our panels back down, get them tucked back into the fender there, and then we'll re-insert our pushpin fasteners to hold those back in place. Let's do the same thing on the passenger side. Now we've got a few extra wires over here with the ground wire and such, so let's get this one just wrapped up with a zip tie here and keep it all together as one. With that nice and secure, let's just take a look here at our wiring and secure it up a little bit. We're going to have that green and white wire that runs over from the passenger side. There's a couple holes here, so what we'll do is run a zip tie down and in, go around that green wire, then we'll come right back over the top, connect the other zip tie, and then pull and slack that we might have over this way. Then we'll just tuck that up behind the panel we jut put in. Just keep it from popping up, as we're heading down the road. Now let's go over to the driver's side, get one wrapped around there. We'll tuck all or wires down and away here. You'll see our pigtail's going to come out, give us a nice connection. I think I'm going to go right around the tube of the bumper here, just to hold everything nice and steady. It's just going to keep us from pulling out too much and trying to pull our wires up and out, and it'll also keep it from falling back down and in so they just hold that position. Down here we can just open that cover up, bring around the safety chain connection point, and slide it back in. It'll hold it in place nicely for us until we need it. Now let's run through, test everything, and make sure it's working. We're going to use a simple test light. We'll connect our grounding clamp to the actual ground, that's a great way to test that. Then first we've got the regular headlights on in the car, the running lights. We'll test the brown wire for a constant signal. Working perfect. Nice loud tone, we're getting a good ground. We're also getting a good signal from our lights. Now for the yellow wire, we'll have him turn on the left blinker and we should get a flashing signal. Perfect. Now the right blinker will be the green wire. Perfect, and now brakes. Now we should get a constant signal from both the green and the yellow. Perfect. We're ready to hook up and head down the road. That'll complete the installation of the T1 Vehicle Wiring Harness with the 4 Pull Flat Connector, part number 118356 on our 1997 Jeep Wrangler. .

After receiving my wiring harness in 3 days for my 1995 Jeep Wrangler, you simply unplug your existing harness, plug the Etrailer Harness in and your set, instant trailer light connection, works excellently ... very moderatley priced, easy installation, and has never failed me yet. This was a waaay easier option than cutting and slicing and trying to figure out which of my existing harness did what... molded plugs in the etrailer harness make it impossible me to mess it up.HIGHLY RECCOMEND this product 470721

Your Jeep Trailer/Tail light worked like a champ. The last Jeep we reconfigured, had us struggling in making our own" home made" wiring harness work, it worked but it was allot of work. Your quick adapters no solder connections were super fast. And the YouTube show had us up to speed in seconds.. Thank you 735303

Fast and easy install. No problems at all when installing. I would suggest wearing safety glasses in my case my jeep still had mud and would fall into your face/eyes. But great product I would recommend it to anyone. 717636

I could have wired my trailer lights the old fashioned way by cutting, splicing, soldering and heat-shrinking the new wiring to the factory harness, but this pre-made loom made it much quicker. Sure saved a lot of time and cursing! 714624

Real nice plug and play for my Jeep Wrangler TJ. Wiring was perfect length from side to side of the Jeep and a perfect amount of tail room for the plug that goes to the trailer. Installation was incredibly easy, even without the video, and only took a matter of minutes. Excellent, will recommend to all my Jeep friends and driving buddies who are trying to make their own, this is a much better option! 678141

To prefice this, I am not mechanical!!! This wiring harness is truly a plug & play, and works as it should, without any adjustments. The excess wire was merely tacked up with a plastic tie. All signals back to my Jeep were spot on. Voila'! If I can do this, anyone can. Great, easy to install, reliable, and accurate. 649461

Hey everyone! I found Etrailer while looking for parts I needed to install a trailer connector on my 94 YJ. It was a good price and shipping was reasonable. I think I ordered the part late on a Saturday night and received it the next Wednesday! I’m putting a 50 in light bar on the YJ also, and went to etrailer to buy an isolator as I’m upgrading to a 2 battery system. It will get here before the light does which means everything will be in place to install the light bar. I’m more than happy with them and the speed in which the handle their orders. I hate waiting for days getting something I ordered. So many retailers generate a shipping label then take their time actually shipping the item to you. Not with etrailer. And they follow up to make sure you received your order and that it fit. Very great customer service! Something seldom seen nowadays! Thanks etrailer! I’ll be a return customer! 614591

I'd been putting off wiring my jeep for trailer lights for a couple years. I went online to make the job a little quicker and I ran across a video of someone installing this wiring kit on a jeep. It could not have been easier. You basically just plug and play. The video had a link for the kit, which took me to the etrailer site. I placed the order and etrailer had it to me in about 3 days. The job took me a couple hours only because I decided to remove the rear bumper and run the wiring through a harness just to prevent the wires from rubbing through at some point. Great product and made the job quick, easy and clean. The one thing that would make this kit better is, it should come with the black flex harness. No exterior wiring is going to hold up without it. Definitely a 5 star product. 587968

  • Installing a 4-Way Trailer Connector on a 1988 Jeep Wrangler
The T-One wiring harness, part # 118356, is designed to fit newer Jeep Wranglers starting in 1991 but is not a confirmed fit on your 1988. The wiring harness for your Jeep is a hardwire and I recommend using part # 18252. It includes a circuit tester to find the correct circuits on the Jeep, as well as quick splice connectors to make splicing in a lot easier. I've linked a video of the harness being installed on a 1985 Monte Carlo SS (Because why not, right?) so you can see the process...

  • Trailer Wiring Harness for a 1989 Jeep Wrangler (YJ)
If you bought wiring harness # 118356 then that would be the problem. This harness does not fit a 1989 Jeep Wrangler/YJ. The only trailer wiring harnesses we have listed for the YJ are hardwire harnesses, # 18252 or # C58044. If you bought a different harness let me know what it is and I can determine what it fits since there are no T-connectors for your YJ.

To install a 4-Way wiring harness on your 1997 TJ you will need to use item # 118356. The two harnesses you mentioned part # C55356 and # 118356 are both a fit for your 1995 Jeep Wrangler. Essentially they are the same harness made by two different companies. If it were me I would go wit the Tow Ready # 118356 as it has a better price and in general we see the Tow Ready harnesses as being the most reliable. I attached an install video that shows the harness being installed on a 1995 Jeep Wrangler just like yours.

First you need to start with a 4-way connector if you do not have one already on your 1997 Jeep Wrangler. For that you would want the part # 118356. Then to convert this to a 7-way to match your trailer you need the part # 37185. The purple wire of this kit needs to be connected to your reverse light circuit and you will be set. You would want to use a quick splice like part # SWC501746-1 to tap into the reverse light circuit.
