Do I Need a Tail Light Converter?

Difference between 2 wire systems and 3 wire systems

Some vehicles operate on a 3-wire system, wherein the brake signal and the turn signals run on separate wires to illuminate different lights. (Typically, these vehicles have amber turn signals.) But most trailers run on a 2-wire system, which means the brake and turn signals travel along a single wire. You'll notice that, on your trailer, the brake light will flash for the turn signals.

If your vehicle operates on a 3-wire system, it will need to be converted so it will be compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This is where a tail light converter comes into play. This converter lets you combine the brake and turn signal functions of your vehicle so they run on a single wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights.

If you have LED tail lights on your vehicle and incandescent lights on your trailer, you'll need some voltage regulation to make sure that your trailer lights get the power they need to activate. This converter will do just that. LED lights are more energy-efficient and require less power than incandescent lights, so the converter will adjust the power accordingly, ensuring that your trailer lights will activate no matter what type of bulbs your vehicle has - or your trailer, for that matter.

Converter Wiring Configuration

Wire Color Wire Function
Green Right turn
Brown Tail lights and parking lights
Red Brakes
White Ground
Yellow Left turn

Tail Light Converter Installation

To begin the installation, use the included circuit tester to double-check the function of each wire on your vehicle's tail light wiring harness. The color/function of the splice-in wires on this converter may not match the color/function of those on your vehicle, so you'll want to be sure to check all of the wire functions first. Once you've figured out the functions of your vehicle's wiring, use the included quick-splice connectors to connect the corresponding wires on the trailer connector. Quick-splices, or "wire taps," offer a quick way to make connections without you having to strip and twist wires. Just place the wires in one of the taps and snap the cover down.

Use double-sided tape to stick the converter box to a flat surface inside your vehicle near the tail lights. It's helpful to clean the surface first so the tape can adhere fully.

How to find a grounding point

Find a raw, unpainted metal surface to use as a grounding point and secure the white ground wire with a self-tapping screw (sold separately). Cleaning the surface prior to securing the white wire will ensure the converter is fully grounded. Finally, secure the converter wires to your vehicle using cable ties (sold separately).

Quick Tip:

  • Butt connectors - especially heat-shrink ones - provide the most secure, longest-lasting connection, so we'd recommend you grab a few and swap them out for the quick-splices in this kit.
  • Use a circuit tester on the plug terminals once the harness is installed to make sure everything's working. There's nothing worse than figuring out that you have a bad ground or a faulty connection right before you're about to hit the road.
  • Be sure to put a little bit of dielectric grease on the 4-way plug to protect the terminals from dirt, grime, and corrosion.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2002 Pontiac Firebird
Yes, the Curt hitch part # C11117 is a confirmed fit for your 2002 Pontiac Firebird and would work well for you. For trailer wiring you'd want the universal style kit part # 119178KIT which has been confirmed as a fit as well.

  • Trailer Hitch, Accessories, and Wiring for a 2006 Suzuki Forenza
Curt trailer hitch # C11481 will fit a 2004 to 2008 Suzuki Forenza so it will also fit your 2006. If you plan on doing any towing with this vehicle be sure to consult the owners manual to make sure it can tow and to determine the vehicle capacity. The correct ball mount is # C45521 and you can use pin and clip # PC2. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256 and for a 2 inch ball use # 19258. For trailer wiring use # 119178KIT. I have linked instructions for the wiring and the hitch for you.

  • Availability of Plug and Play Wiring harness for GL1500 Goldwing
Hi Rich; we don't have a custom wiring harness that would be a plug and play installation for your GL1500 Goldwing. You will need to use a universal wiring harness with a converter like the # 119178KIT. The converter will combine your brake and turn signals making it compatible with a 2-wire system on a trailer.

  • Brake Controller Installation for Motorhome with Air Brakes
A brake controller like the Tekonsha P3 will work just fine with the air braking system on your motorhome. The controller will get its input from the brake stoplight switch, which tells it when the brakes are being applied. If there is a 7-way trailer connector at the rear bumper, there might be a connector located under the dash that the controller would simply plug into. You would need to contact the motorhome manufacturer for more information about this. If you do not have a 7-way...

This is a proportional brake controller that will allow your trailer brakes to be applied with the same intensity and at the same time as you hit the brake pedal in your Jeep. It is customizable for your driving preferences and has 3 levels of boost. It has an easy to read LCD screen that takes the code deciphering out of the equation and sets it apart from other models. For your 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 I recommend the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267. Roadmaster is known for their quality and responsiveness if you ever have an issue with their products. Plug in wiring harnesses like the # HM56200 you were looking at tend to have issues so I always recommend a standard diode kit to keep everything simple and easy. The trailer wiring functions of your 2006 Ram 3500 are controlled by the truck's TIPM which unfortunately can only be reset by a Ram dealer. These trailer hitches are both universal meaning you can modify the mounting brackets to fit the frame rails on your bus and then bolt or weld them into place. Since your trailer works fine when connected to your 2009 Ram, the issue is most likely with the truck, however, I recommend checking your trailer ground connections at the main frame ground normally near the trailer battery and then at your tail lights as they often ground through the mounting hardware.
