Video Transcript for Hopkins Endurance Multi-Tow Trailer Connector Installation - 2017 Thor Siesta Sprinter Motorhome

Hello neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer. And today we're taking a look and installing the Hopkins seven-way as well as five-flat and four-flat on a 2017 Thor Siesta. Now, this is a great option to upgrade from your previous seven-pole not only because you can get a nice plug that goes up 180 degrees, which this one being in an angle makes a lot easier to get our plug in. Whereas our previous one, you can see it doesn't quite open up as much so you're kind of at a downward angle. It's hard to see if it's actually attached. And this one also has two handles here to make it easy.

But the great part too is you're no longer stuck with just a seven pole. You also have a five flat as well as a four flat down here. So you can still get those lighting functions whether you're hooking up to your seven or your four flat and you can actually do both. So our neighbor here today is flat towing his vehicle but he also has a bike rack that has lights on it so he can plug his four pole in here and it's gonna work on both of them. What's nice about this kit is it's going to be a pretty simple installation because it comes with a bracket to mount up or has already had that so we didn't have to use it.

But it also comes with the mounting hardware here and it also comes with terminal grease. So you can get that dielectric protection on your plug. Now you are gonna just be tying it in just as you would your old seven way. It's pretty easy. And once you have that wired up, you'll have the combination of the four five flat as well as that seven pole.

So whatever you want to hook up to as far as trailer you're gonna be ready to go. Now the first step is going to be removing our old just seven way plug and it's gonna be different from vehicle to vehicle. Ours just has a Phillips head screwdriver with a nine millimeter nut on the back. So we're gonna go ahead, get this taken out. There should be four of 'em generally mounting up and this is gonna allow us to get to those wires and be able to work on this a little bit easier to get our new plug on.

Now once you've exposed your wires you're gonna go ahead and cut them off and leave enough to where we can make our attachment point to our new plug now. Now before removing your old plug you may wanna denote where each of your wires are going. Maybe take a photo picture for reference and you're gonna put your new plug there and plug it in the same. Now ours has our little reference here on the cap, and some of them do and some of 'em won't. So just to have a little bit to back you up when you put your new one on. Again, suggest taking a picture and then just put those in the same way. So basically you just don't want to go color to color because if I put my green to here, it's not necessarily gonna be correct. You want to make sure that's in the proper position that your old plug was. Another thing you're gonna wanna make sure that you do before cutting your wires is disconnect your battery because you can have 12 volt power going through these and you don't want to arc with your wires making contact with one another. Now I've gone and trimmed back our insulation enough to slide this over and you can see this is where our wires are gonna pass through. And this little screw here is just gonna tighten up and cinch up, creating a nice almost water tight seal. So you're gonna wanna back that out to make sure that you have space and just pass your wires through. And you can slide this back a little bit so you have a little more room to work. And then we're gonna go ahead and start stripping our wires back and making our connections to our plug. So make sure that you slide this over. If you have a split bracket like this you're gonna wanna make sure obviously that you can get it into the bracket before hooking it up. So I'm just gonna go ahead, tighten this down and I can probably move this a little bit later if I have to. But for now, this will hold this in place for me. Now if you don't have a bracket, it does come with one. Ours obviously is welded on to our hitch but your bracket's gonna look like this and it comes with the hardware to mount it up. You can simply get a bracket that zip ties onto this if you need an extension down. But really you can just take a self tapping screw and drill this into your hitch or wherever you're planning on mounting and it's gonna create a nice spot for you. And you can see here, this is where you're gonna be able to pass your wires through. Now we also have this cap here and this is gonna snap onto this one here. And this is also a good way to kind of just put this in place so we can feed our wires through and then just snap this on and that's gonna hold it in our bracket for us. And this just lines up you're gonna see that there's two flat spots or indents here on our plug and this should just slide over and snap in place. Now it does have an indent here and that's gonna match this bottom portion here where our four and five pole are. So you can go ahead and just align that however you want but we're gonna make our connections. So just make sure that we'll be able to twist this back into position before mounting it up. You'll go ahead and just tighten this down. Just making sure that you don't have any wires that are frayed out and you don't have to get too tight here, just make it snug. They should be able to hold itself like that. Now, once we have them all attached what we're gonna do is go ahead and be able to make sure that we can slide this in and you're better to loosen this up. You don't want to have all your wires kind of putting stress on those connections made. So just to be able to slide this down. Now we're not gonna completely put it on there because we do wanna put our dielectric grease which is included. So we're just gonna open this up. And this just kind of protects from moisture buildup and just creating any long term issues with our plug. It's just gonna be a little added protection here so you can, it comes with two packs. Go ahead and just go heavy on this. So all of your connections, just try to get that coated in there, nice and heavy. Now at this point, we got our dielectric in there. This is able to close up. I'm gonna go ahead and tighten this down, and that way it's gonna kind of seal up that entrance where our wires pass through. Now I'm also going to take a lit, a roll of electrical tape and just wrap this up that way it's a nice watertight seal long term. This is up to you but might as well just for that added protection. So now we can go ahead and get our hardware installed. And on the front of the plug there's actually a hex molded in. So we can go ahead, pass our bolt through and that should sit flush in there. So then we're gonna follow it up with a flat washer and then a split washer and then our nut. And then to tighten all this down it's gonna be a 3/8 inch socket wrench. So I'm gonna get these all started and then tighten these down. And we don't really have to get too tight here just enough to kind of compress that split washer to tighten down. But again, this is a plastic plug so we don't want to crack it. Now that we have everything tightened down this is ready to go. We just need to test to make sure that it works. And I'm using a seven pole tester here. Now we have these available here at etrailer. The other option is obviously hooking it up to either your towed vehicle or a trailer. So now we're gonna go ahead, run through the light sequence to make sure that it's all working. So I'll start off with my running lights. Next, I'll do my left turn signal, my right turn signal and then also my brakes. And that was a look and installation of the Hopkins seven way five flat as well as four flat trailer wiring connection on a 2017 Thor Siesta..

Trailer ConnectorTrailer Connector came extremely quickly. Very pleased with the product. Thank you.

by:

Great product. Heavy duty even though it is plastic. Installed easily and has clear directions.

by:

Good quality, easy to install. Would be top marks if it wasn't made of such light plastic; Everytime I use it I think I might break it. So far so good, will see how it holds up in the snow.

by:

This item is very nice. I was replacing the Ford original on my F150 pickup and the existing wires fit without any modification. I like the dual connectors. Now I can use either the 7 way or 4 way without any additional adapters.

by:

Actually I had two (2) seperate order because i could not make up my mind as to how i wanted to wire the trailer and other accessories that I have. Anyway, both orders were packaged extremely well. Shipment/receipt was great; took a short timeframe from the time items were ordered. Only one problem. No one showed up to help install all the parts I ordered.

Thanks for the products and the support!

by:

Great plug. The rear cover has two clips to hold the wire cover on the back. If you attach the wire cover, don't try to remove it, brand new the clips break off. Very fragile.

Other than that the plug is easy to install and wire and hold the trailer plug firmly.

by:

great plug, had to replace my other plug becasue it wouldn't stand up, this one will, also like the 4 pin so I don't have to carry the adapter plug

by:

Very well built the only problem i had was I used connectors and they were a little hard to fit them in to the back cap but is did and it works good.

by:

Its exactly what I needed to rewire my truck (2002 F150). My only complaint is that once you snap all the parts together in the rear, its very difficult to take apart. I ended up breaking off one of the clasps while trying to adjust the wiring. It still seals in the wires and has a tight fit. I really like my setup now!!!

by:

great product will make it easy to hook up camper, boat. and cattle trailer, all three with different connectors and also trailer brakes. being very sturdy and water tight helps also

by:

Great Product. I can not give enough praise to etrailer for the ease of ordering and promt shipping also the followup of my order. There should be more companies like etrailer. The Multi-Tow Connector will enable me to use trailers with different wiring

by:

Great product - the overall depth is a bit deep and for my specific application I had some challenges finding a good mounting point (partially due to the depth of the adapter and partly due to the lack of solid mounting surface. The product itself is sold with a flexible five/four way plug (single plug accommodates both the four and five pin) that will not easily break. The seven pin plug has a fairly stiff cover that is spring loaded. Wiring was simple too!

by:

Very well made, nicely designed. Note, if you mount this vertically, as suggested, a plastic cover is provided for the rear, and the unit may extend beyond your old bracket. My old bracket was a part of the original Hidden Hitch, and this extended beyond the old bracket. Because the rear plastic cover is NOT waterproof, it can be sealed with a small bead of RTV or similar sealant under the edge of the cover.

by:

Plug installed on my JeepTurned out pretty cool, if I say so myself.

by:

I like this trailer connection. It seems to be well made and it is reasonably priced. I received my order in a reasonable time as well. The installation was not difficult and the wiring diagram was clear and understandable.
I really like the idea that I can now tow a trailer with just about any type of connection and it will work.

by:

I received the product quickly and in perfect condition the packing was excellant. I installed the connector easily and quickly. I consulted the Gm wiring diagram and als found the wires for all the 7 connections. I had a tight spot within the bumper edge, but managed to find short bolts to attach the bracket in old exsisting holes. The rest was easy attaching the connectors and making sure all wires were through the rear enclosure and tightening them down. I tested the 4 wire connector with my boat trailer lights and it worked like it was designed to do. I LOVE the versatility of this connector. Thanks etrailer.com!! Great product at a great price.

by:

eTrailer has come through again for us. Our 7/4 pin tow connector failed, and they were able to ship the same day we ordered.
Our first stop to shop for anything our 5th wheel RV needs is eTrailer.

Love the compact size for both 7way and 5/4 way connections. Install was pretty easy. The wire instructions are for a traditional 7 way color code. Would be nice if they included a RV color code and heavy duty. But just a multi meter or cross reference with your wires manual is all that's needed. I did not give 5 stars because I did not like the 2 flimsy hook connection to attach the wire shield backing to the connector. I reinforced with some black tape because it was sperated. Also would have liked if the 5/4 way door was spring loaded just like the 7 way. I mounted my connection sideways to use gravity to help keep that flap close.

by:

Heavy duty constructed is definitely a plus there are a couple shortcomings that I was surprised to see.. first off for it to be truly waterproof where the cable enters the back of the plug needs to be more waterproof. Also stainless steel screws were not used and I just don't understand why they are selling a product that cannot stand up to the test of time and these are two rather inexpensive improvements that can be made.

  • Do 7-Way Trailer Connectors have Amp Ratings for Pins or the Whole Socket
Most if not all trailer wiring harnesses/connectors use larger wires for the 12 volt and ground circuits compared to the other circuits (lights). The sockets themselves don't have an amperage rating so you will go by the draw of the things drawing power. In order to figure out what the lights are drawing you could connect the trailer to the tow vehicle and turn on a function while testing the trailer side wiring behind the connector with a meter to see what sort of reading you get. If you need a 5-Way flat trailer-side connector, you can use the Draw-Tite 5-Flat Trailer End 48 Inch Harness # 20017. It is not extremely uncommon for the hitch pin hole on a trailer hitch receiver to become oblong after frequent usage. A good way to prevent or reduce this would be to use an anti-rattle device like part # GY88XR.
