Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the rear floor liner, scuff panel, and the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness Installation - 2015 Chevrolet Traverse

Speaker 1: Today on our 2015 Chevrolet Traverse, we're gonna be taking a look at and I'm gonna show you how to install the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Connector, part number HM11141150. This is gonna give us all the proper lighting function to safely tow our trailer. It's gonna give us both turn signals, our brake lights, our running lights, and our ground. It's also gonna have a nice dust cap that's gonna help protect our connections from any dirt, debris, and moisture. This wiring harness is gonna plug directly into your factory tail light wiring and into your factor tail lights. The good thing about it is it's gonna have a power wire that runs up to your battery. The good thing about that is, it's not gonna draw any power from your tail lights themselves, it's gonna draw all the power from the battery, so you're not gonna get that dimming effect if you have lights that are drawing a little bit more power, or you have a few extra lights on your trailer. The first thing we need to do to start our installation, is we need to get into the hatch.

Now, in our instructions it tells us to take all of this out to get to a grommet that underneath here. I'm gonna show you an easier way to do it. Take a trim panel tool or a small screwdriver, we're gonna pop out these caps on each of our tail lights. We'll take a 7mm socket, we're gonna remove the two bolts that are holding our tail light assembly in place. And we're just gonna pull straight back on the tail light.

I'm gonna go ahead and pull the screws out so I don't lose them. And we need to remove the wiring. If you flip it over, you'll see a little red tab. Take your trim panel tool or your screwdriver, push that all the way to the back. And then what we're gonna do, is you're gonna push down and pull out like that. Push down right here on top of that red.

We'll set our light aside. And you're gonna do the same thing to the other side. So, in your wiring harness you're gonna have red, yellow, and brown wire, and you're gonna have a green wire. Green wire's gonna be for the passenger. You're yellow, red, and brown are gonna be for your driver's side. Now, this wiring harness is gonna live outside of the vehicle.

They want you to take all that out, pass this through, and plug it in right behind the light. That's unnecessary. The whole back of this bumper fascia is hollow, so alls we're gonna do is we're gonna connect it right here, drop it down, run the green wire to the passenger side across the passenger light. How we're gonna do that, let me find something stiff or heavy. You're gonna drop it down through the hole back behind the fascia here. What I like to use is a string with a nut or a bolt on it. It's heavy, basically it'll fit right down through there, there's plenty of room. Drop it down just like that. You can see it hanging. We're gonna take the end of our wire, and I'm just gonna make a loop. So something like that. We'll match our plugs. My power wire that I'm gonna be running up to the battery, because this wire is so short, I'm not gonna be able to reach it from the bottom. I'm gonna go ahead and install it now. I'm gonna drop my wire down. The butt connector is already installed on the wiring harness when you get it. Grip it into place. Now because this isn't a heat shrink butt connector, I'm gonna go ahead and wrap it up with some tape.Okay. Drop that down. I think I'm gonna zip tie it just like that to this existing wiring. Its gonna hold it in place, so it'll keep it from moving around or bouncing around. Converter box is gonna have two slots on the sides. I'll run the zip tie through it. What we don't want, is we don't want this up here, because then you can't get your tail light assembly back in. We wanna make sure it's down behind, or at least we can push it down there a little bit. It's gonna be our ground wire. Now, we have two options. We can run this down to the bottom and put our ground wire in somewhere down there, or I can just ground it right here. We're gonna use a 1/4" socket to put in our self-tapping screw, just like that. I'm gonna make sure that that's not gonna move. Once we're good, we can tuck our white wire back down inside here and plug our tail light back into place. We wanna make sure that you push down that red tab. Now, we can reinstall our tail light.Next, I'm gonna take my green wire, run it over to the passenger side. My 4-pole wire, I'm gonna run it through this bracket right here. On the inside of the bumper fascia, there's plastic brackets here. What we wanna do is I wanna keep it from hanging down and from anything hot or moving. So we're gonna run it right up behind it. And you can see right here, I've already dropped down my plumb bob or whatever I'm using. Now I can go over and pull it up, and it will actually pull this wire up tight against the back of the fascia. Now, we can pull our wiring up for our passenger side. Go ahead and plug it into our tail light like we did our driver side. And what I'm gonna do before I put my tail light back into place, is I'm gonna zip tie this wiring up, that way it doesn't hang down at the bottom. You can see I just bundled it up, zip tied it together, and then zip tied it to this wire up here. I just wanna make sure that my green wire doesn't drop down out of the bottom of the vehicle. So now, we'll go ahead and put our tail light assembly back in place.Next, we need to run our power up to the front of the vehicle to our battery. Let me get that done real quick and I'll show you how I did it. So, I found this existing wiring, or factory wiring. I zip tied to that, went right over the top, went over the top of my axle here. Zip tied here, went onto these hard lines and zip tied them right along the hard lines all the way up to the front of the vehicle. Went through this plate right to here. Now I'll go up top, drop something down, and pull my wire up.Now, this is how I got my wire up. You can use something a little bit stiffer, I just happened to have some airline tube. If you don't have airline tub, you can use a wire hanger, and it has a little bit of stiffness. This panel right here in the back, I loosened it with these little plastic nuts. I'm gonna drop my wire right down inside of it, push these back in, and I'll mount my wire right here on the positive side of the battery. We're gonna have a wire like this in our kit. We're gonna take the fuse out if they put it in or if they installed it. What I need to do is I need to cut my wire down to size. I think I'm gonna cut it about here. I'm gonna strip back the end of my wire. Then on in with the heat shrink butt connector. And we'll take a heat source and we're gonna shrink that butt connector.I'm gonna take a 12mm socket and take this nut off right here. Go ahead and put on a ring terminal. Tighten that back down. Once you have that connection made, go ahead and put your fuse back into place. Speaker 2: Next, we'll test out our wiring using part number I26. Left blinker. Right blinker. Brake lights. Running lights. Speaker 1: Now, if you want a more permanent mounting location, you can find one of these one our website using part number HM48595. Our 4-pole is gonna mount directly inside. It's gonna mount right on the bracket on our hitch. Set it into place like that. Now, your kit's gonna come with two self-tapping screws. We're not gonna use the self-tapping screws, we're actually gonna use just some nuts and bolts that we found. I put some nylon block nuts on the bottom here. Just like that. That'll do it for a look at and installation on the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Connector, part number HM11141150 on our 2015 Chevrolet Traverse.

I needed a hitch for my Chevrolet Traverse High Country and was not certain what to order. I called etrailer and they verified all of my vehicle information and checked and got me the correct trailer, wiring kit and also plug mount. Was doubtful about it being correct, but when everything got here, in short order, it was exactly what I needed. Without their research I know I would have ordered the wrong thing. You can depend on them researching to make certain they are giving you the correct parts and quality items. 767153

Worked great for about four months. Now as soon as you plug the trailer harness in, the brake lights on trailer light up and stay o.. Don't even need to have the car on.b and only time turn signals work is when you have brakes applied. 691009

The trailer wiring harness you purchased is covered by a 90 day warranty. The best way to begin the wiring harness troubleshoot is to use a circuit tester like # 40376
Circuit Tester Kit
$71.25
on the trailer connector pins as each lighting function is activated. Ground the tester to the male pin on the trailer connector, which is fed by the white ground wire. Probe the socket fed by the green wire as the right turn signal is activated. The tester should blink along with the turn signal, and when the brake pedal is pressed. Probe the socket fed by the yellow wire when the left turn signal is activated. The tester should blink along with the turn signal, and also with the brake pedal. The socket fed by the brown wire should show power with the vehicles headlights or running lights on. If you are showing signal on each pin as its function is activated, then the problem exists in the wiring on the trailer, not in the vehicle wiring harness. Beginning at the trailer connector, trace each circuit rearward to the taillights. Examine the trailer connector on the trailer, check for corrosion or damage. Check the point where the wiring meets the 4-pin plug. As you trace each circuit rearward, look for pinched wires and loose connections. Ill link you to a trailer wiring troubleshooting article that should be helpful. Just click the link provided below:

This wiring harness can be used as an OEM replacement, but it also includes the fuses and relays to activate the tow package if your vehicle was not equipped with the tow package. This will be a plug and play model that will install easily and would not interfere with the AC. The Hopkins kit you referenced would work but is a universal hardwire application. Check...
