Video Transcript for Hopkins 7 Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector Installation

Today on our enclosed trailer we're going to be installing the Hopkins 7-way molded trailer wire connector, 6" long, part number H20044. Now to begin our install we'll go ahead and feed the wiring through the frame. Quick tech tip: to help feed the wire into place through the hole here in the body we're just going to go ahead and tape up our wires to help keep them together. Using some black electrical tape we're just going to go ahead and do a quick wrap-up of the wiring. Then we'll take the wire, feed it into place. Now we've moved to the inside. We need to find the 7-pole harness here inside the panel and pull it out when we have access to it.

There, now we have access to our y-pole wiring. We're going to add the Spectro trailer wiring junction box, part number 38656. Our junction box is going to get mounted to the wall so we can route the wiring into the junction box and make a nice clean connection point. I can go ahead and remove the electrical tape we put over our wiring. Now to mount the junction box I'm just going to use a couple self-tappers. To route into our box we can remove one of the plugs, install one of the grommets that has a pre-made hole in it, then put the grommet back into place.

You'll note that we left one wire out as it will get routed and directly connected to the break-away switch battery box. We'll go ahead and add our ring terminals here to our wiring. We'll go ahead and start making our connections with the junction box terminals. Note, they will not all match color for color. Here we have the blue wire that comes from our 7-pole harness, and it's going to go onto the blue terminal. It's also known as the hot lead for your trailer braking.

We'll take the black wire from the trailer side that runs back to the trailer braking and connect it to the same terminal. To secure it we'll use the star washer and nut provided. We'll just tighten it down hand tight this time. The next terminal over will say brown or running light circuit. For this one it will be our green wire and on the trailer side it will be our brown wire.

We'll move to the next terminal which will say green or right turn signal. For this one, coming from our 7-pole harness we'll have the brown wire, and from our trailer side it will be the green wire. The next terminal over will be left blank as it's not going to be hooked up. This would typically be for your yellow wire or reverse lights for a trailer. Since we're not using that in this application we're just going to dead-end the wire. Then we'll have the driver side turn signal. That will be the red wire from our harness and the red wire from our 7-pole connector. Then we're going to have the hot lead terminal. This is where you'll provide battery power coming from the vehicle to your trailer. That will be the black wire from our 7-pole connector and the black wire that will go to the interior lighting for the enclosed trailer. Then our final terminal here is going to be for the white or ground circuit. That will be the white wire coming from our 7-pole connector and the two white wires on our trailer side. Next we'll move to the outside of our trailer. We'll take the 7-pole wire that we brought it inside and we're going to secure it here to the trailer tongue using a Redline metal loom clamp, part number A0500. To secure the clamp we'll just use a self-tapping screw. There, now that we have it secured to hold it when we're not using it we'll just simply wrap it around the trailer jack. This will complete the install of the Hopkins 7-way molded trailer wiring connector, 6" long, part number H20044, on our enclosed trailer. .

Good service. I had called and confirmed the details about the cord and plug. The salesperson was very helpful and gave me a good target date for delivery. Got it today as was promised. I’ve got it installed and it works well. It has a quality heavy duty cord that is molded into the plug. Time will tell if my hopes for longevity is achieved. Thanks and keep up the good service!! 666855

My drum brakes locked up on me because it is a boat trailer and gets submerged in water. I hate drum brakes, due how many part are inside and can rust up. I am the 3rd owner of my 1998 boat trailer and it was hard to figure out what I needed to fix it. I contacted etrailer and they were super helpful, super informative and super easy to work with. I told them what I had, and what I wanted to do., and they put a package together for me and that was them. Everything was super east to install because it is all bolt on. I did have to do some cutting and grinding on my old tongue because the master was welded on. That was the only difficult part. My new setup is amazing and the disk brakes and new master make it feel like my boat is not even there. All in all, I am 110% satisfied and will definitely be a returning customer for any trailer needs. Thank you etrailer for making everything super easy. 635087

i have been wiring 12 volt systems, hot rods, race cars, trailer of all types. although the plug worked like i wanted an this car trailer the color code reference chart is no way right. i did read this in the reviews before i bought it so i was ready for it. 652655

I felt the product was good, but the cord was not long enough. When I ordered it, the one I wanted had a longer cord, but was not available. I was in a bind so I took the shorter one. It works great, but it is not long enough for my needs. If I have to turn the trailer sharp the cord will pop out of the plug, due to the shortness of the cord. Good product. 339810

I sold the trailer. The cord was still not long enough.

The connector is a good piece, however the colors do not match up. Anyone familiar with trailer and truck wiring knows that the wires are all color coded for a reason. If your not going to make the colors match up then why utilize the same colors? I hard wired everything neatly and then found out brown doesn't go to brown, and so on.... Had to test every lead to get it all wired properly... extremely aggravating. My suggestion is that the wires be run properly so they can all match color wise... and if that's not possible, then send a wiring diagram along with the harness when it is shipped. 208164

The items that I orderd were received in a very timley manner. I had originally ordered a different trailer pig tail and etrailer contacted me and let me know that the items were back ordered from the supplier and made recomendations on what they had in stock. The staff at etailer are very proffesonal and I will diffenitly purchase from them in the future. 160503

Initially this product seemed perfect. It is stout and seems to be able to hold up to the wear and tear of the road. It fits far better then the cheap connector I picked up at the convenient store. The length was more than adequate to replace my old connector. However, after installing it my lights went CRAZY!! My passenger side turn signal was constantly on. When I hit the driver side turn signal all the lights flashed. The brakes did turn anything on. So I completely disconnected it and got out my trusted multimeter. Turns out that the brown wire went to the green on the trailer, the yellow to the brown, the green to the red, ect. It was a mess. Within 10 minutes I had the wires feeding the correct lights. I'm not sure if it is because Chevrolet doesn't use the industry standard or if my connector was defective. Either way it's fixed now and works great!! Even with all of those problems I still give it 4 stars. 245487

This was purchased as a replacement for my utility trailer's connector. The wires inside are of a heavier gauge than the connector it is replacing. And the insulation seems more tightly molded around the inside wires. It seems like a quality item. 612191

  • 7-Way Extension for Towing Food Truck with 2003 Ford Expedition
Thanks for the picture of the trailer wiring connector you have. Based on that you are in need of a 7-way blade extension like the part # C56080 for a 7 foot long extension or part # HM20049 for an 8 foot long extension. Or if you are looking for something shorter you'd want the part # TLW6024 which is 24 inches long.

7-way trailer wiring includes a +12V auxiliary power circuit that can be used for a range of purposes from powering an electric jack to topping off a trailer-mounted battery. This circuit is handled by the contact at the 1:00 position as you look at the vehicle's trailer socket. The ground is at the opposite pin, the one at the 7:00 position. Please refer to the linked photo. For an easy way to access this power circuit to operate your fuel pump you could wire in a 7-way plug like #...

All of their kits are shown on the linked page. A trailer can require brakes based on its gross weight, GVWR. You want to choose the Timbren kit that matches the trailer's intended GVWR. You do not want to pick a system that is rated for more weight than your trailer will have as this will tend to produce a rougher ride....

  • Replacement for Factory 7-Way Trailer Connector on 2001 GMC Sierra 2500HD
To replace the 7-way on your 2001 GMC Sierra 2500HD I recommend the Reese Multi-Plug Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package # 74682 because it is an easy plug-in design. All you need to do is plug it into the 7-way socket on your truck and it will work as a replacement. For a trailer connector I recommend the Hopkins 7-Way RV Style Connector with Molded Cable # H20046 which is 8 feet long. The Stop/Turn/Tail Trailer Lights # ST21RS and # ST20RS will ground through the mounting hardware, so the two wires will need to connect to the Hopkins 7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector # H20044 simply by function. The red wire on the lights is for the tail light function, which is the green wire on the molded connector. The yellow wire of the 7-way harness part # H20044 that you referenced goes to the center pin of the 7-way which is an aux circuit that is typically used for reverse lights if present on the trailer. Normally the red wire on a 7-way (RV standard colors) is for the left turn circuit so if you have a red wire I'd not think this would be the correct wire to connect the yellow if the 7-way to. Most likely you'd need to connect it to a yellow wire on your 7-way or to a purple wire. That...
