Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's factory tow package wiring harness, which is located behind your rear bumper on the driver's side. The converter plugs into the factory wiring harness behind the interior access panel in your rear cargo area, on the driver's side.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in your rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for The Low-Down on the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with the 4-Pole Flat Trailer connector. This product fits certain years of the Honda Pilot. You can use the vehicle fit guide located at etrailer.com to ensure that this is a fit for your vehicle. It's going to provide a 4-way flat connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer signal lights. This is compatible with 5-pole, 6-pole and 7-pole adapters. Adapters are sold separately. It comes with a dust cap for the 4-way flat connector.

That way you can cover up the connection points when your plug's not being used. The black box right here is the included taillight converter. This ensures that your vehicle's wiring matches that of your trailer's. This power module's designed to connect directly to the vehicle battery through all the wiring, and that's when to avoid overloading your vehicle's electrical system. This unit is designed to connect quickly and easily. It does come with detailed installation instructions that walk you through the entire process step by step, but basically what you'll need to do is locate your connection points in the rear cargo area in the rear of the vehicle. This connector right here, this is your 4-flat connector. This end is going to connect to the vehicle's tow connector behind the rear bumper on the driver's side.

Locate that connection point, plug this in, and then the connector from the module connect to the vehicle's tow plug in the rear cargo area on the driver's side, located near the rear seat. Again, the instructions do a great job of indicating exactly where those are and how to access those. It is custom fit for your vehicle, so these plugs are going to match up perfectly with the ports on the vehicle and they're going to snap-lock together for a nice tight secure fit. So once you have those plugged in, you'll then need to mount the convertor box in an out-of-the-way location. It's got a mount located on each side. That way you can easily get it secured using the included cable ties. Then once your installation's complete, this connector is going to be stowed at the back of the vehicle.

You want it to be easily accessible. It's also recommended that you use a small amount of terminal grease on all your electrical connections like the plugs on the vehicle and the 4-pole connector itself. This grease is designed to help prevent corrosion to the connection points and it is included. It also comes with a 30 amp fuse. Again, the instructions indicate exactly how to get that installed and where it installs, and it's going to come with some zip ties right there, so that way you can secure any excess or slack in your wiring. When it comes to the maximum amperage for the stop and turn lights, we're looking at three amps per circuit, and for the tail lights it's six amps per circuit. That's going to do it for today's look at the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with the 4-pole flat trailer connector..

The directions were confusing in that they contained extra unnecessary steps for insertion of a relay and fuse that sent with the package, despite the fact that I could not find the locations mentioned to insert them in my 2013 Honda Pilot. By digging around for a while online I was able to infer that these are not necessary for this particular installation and sure enough, it works without them. It would have been nice to have more clear direction, however. Otherwise seems to be a good product and fit well.

Product quality is great. Completely plug and play as described. The only problem I had was the instructions included in the product. A fuse is included in the kit but there is no mention of installing it in the instructions. This is not in any way the fault of etrailer.com. In fact, when the instructions provided by Hopkins fell short, when I searched the internet to find where to install it, etrailer.com was one of the first hits with extremely detailed steps, including pictures. If I were reviewing etrailer.com I would give 5 stars. Easy to find the exact product you need. Easy checkout. Fast shipping and efficient correspondence. Unfortunately this is a review of the product, and while the product is high in both quality and ease of installation, the incomplete instructions were frustrating enough to drop one star. Hope this is helps. Good luck.

I got my wiring harness for my Honda Pilot 2015 and hooked it up and put the jcase fuse in and the control box. But there was no aux fuse box for the relay or the 20 amp fuse that the instructions says to put it. So I put hooked up what I had and the lights on the trailer aren’t working. Is there anything I could use to help trouble shoot? Is it possible I bought the wrong harness for my vehicle?

The fuse box under the hood next to the battery is where the J-case fuse would go. The relay and 20 amp ATM fuse would install in the Aux fuse box on the drivers side bulkhead in the rear cargo area. The back seat blocks the fuse panel, so youll need to fold the seat forward in order to access it.

I did not receive a dust cover that it says is provided or did I receive the corrosion preventative grease that it said was also provided. And instructions are vague with the fuses provided.

I originally ordered a wiring harness for our pilot and after reading some other reviews people complained about missing items. Well my order was missing some parts. I filled out my review with a rating of three for this reason. Then Rebecca from etrailer contacted me with an apology and sent out my missing parts at no cost and completed my order. Thank you Rebecca. I know mistakes are made but they took care of it Harness works great and was east to install. I now am giving the review a five star.

I'm giving this product 3 stars as the package arrived intact, however it was missing the dust cover for the connector, grease for the connections and the installation directions did not state where the relay connectiion and the fuses (4) go. I contacted Hopkins for the information on where the relay and fuses go.

Wiring harness worked great. Install wasn’t totally straight forward but not bad. Saved a ton from buying from dealer.

  • Recommended 7-Way Wiring Harness for a 2019 Honda Pilot
Hey John, unfortunately there aren't any 7-way harnesses for your Honda, so what you're going to have to do is tee off that 4-flat with the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7. From here, you can mount the 7-way back in the recessed area on your bumper and you'll be all set. If there is anything else I can do, please feel to drop a comment and let me know!

  • I Have an Extra Relay and 20Amp ATM Fuse With Hopkins 43124 4-Way Wiring
I am even more confused than you are Benjamin as the images we have for the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Wiring Harness # HM11143124 do not even show a 20 amp fuse or relay. It could be there was a change for newer models which require the additional components or they were accidently put in your box.
