Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's factory tow package, which is located in your cargo area, on the driver's side. You will have to remove the scuff panel and the cargo holder to access this port. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, insert the included 10-amp fuse into the fuse holder.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your trunk.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plug on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

The wiring harness was very easy to install by watching and following the on line YouTube video

The wiring harness is holding up extremely well. No issues what so ever. It is a quality piece.

by:

The hitch, harness, and tester are fantastic. I cleaned, lubed, tested the weld nuts. I used a reinforced cardboard box 9x11x16 and a flat piece of cardboard to slide the hitch under the passport. I then lifted one side and put the 16" side of box under it. I then lifted the other side off the ground and got one bolt partially on, before doing the same on the side that was sitting on the box. With one bolt on each side the rest was easy.
I used a torque wrench (the pointer type) to snug it down.
It was easy to get it in place by myself, but the hard part was torquing it down. You have to apply a decent amount of force, and there isn't much room to swing a wrench. The two bolts (one on each side) closest to the front, are partially obstructed by the exhaust. As a result, you can't use an extension on those two bolts. I was lucky I had a 12 point socket, and made a bunch of small swings.

The harness was easy too. I tried to do it without taking off the side panel, but was unable to SAFELY blindly cut the tape holding the connector, so I popped off the door sill panel and side panel, which was easy after I watched several online videos. I used the included zip ties and double sided tape to make sure nothing rattles, and verified it worked using the tester before popping the panels back on.
I prolly wasted 15 mins trying to accomplish this without pulling off the side panel, but I am glad I took it off, because the extra space made securing everything easy, and ensure that any rattling coming from the back of my passport isn't because of me.
There is a gap between the storage box and the metal frame (under the door sill / threashold plate). I used the foam tape to secure the black box to the metal (covering one of the oval cutouts) and left the wiring loosely rolled in the gap, with the tester attached to it (so I don't loose it).
Just be careful not to strip the Philips head screw under the anchor point. I used my 18v drill on low speed break it loose. I used a number 2 Philips bit, but the bit looked small compared to screw head, if I did it again I would use a larger bit.

In the end, the hitch looks great, the wire harness is out of way (until I need it) the hands free / kick motion door sensor still works, and it cost a song a dance compared to the oem hitch. In fact, I also ordered the 65" Malone roof rack (been waiting a week for that to leave the warehouse, another story) all for under $500, and both are made in USA. Compared to oem hitch, I can have hitch, roof rack, AND fancy bicycle rack that won't rust and fade like my current bike rack.

Honda Pilot

The included printed instructions for installing the wiring harness lacked some details that were very clear in an included video. So, it’s important to watch the video, if installing this connector on a 2022 Honda Pilot. The installation of the trailer hitch receiver in the Pilot generally went well though I would suggest that it’s important to use some penetrating oil and wire brushing of the receiving nuts, along with installing and releasing the bolts before trying to connect the hitch receiver. Trying to do it by myself while lying under the Pilot proved a bit too difficult and I ended up doing it the following day with my son. Would likely have been much easier if I had access to a vehicle lift. All good in the end though.

The wiring harness failed after using it 3 times. It's wired for a Honda Passport. Literally plug n play, so the failure wasn't due to my installation......very disappointed.

by:

Passport trailer wiring harness worked perfectly. Installation video was very very helpful. Installed myself for 1/5 of dealer Installation. Thanks

by:

Hello, I have found etrailer to be very helpful with product knowledge. I had specific questions about which trailer connector would fit our Honda, and customer service was great!

by:

I would have liked to have a bracket of some kind to install the plug next to the where the connection/ball is for the connecting the trailer.

I hear your point Dave. This wiring harness # C56291 is actually designed to be stored inside the rear cargo area of your 2020 Honda Pilot when not in use, protecting it from the elements and extending its lifespan. When it's time to use it, you'd simply pull it out and close the rear hatch over the wiring without causing any damage. Alternatively, if you prefer to store it outside, you can route it through a rubber grommet near the wheel jack and mount it on the bumper using the Mounting Bracket # 18144 and No-Drill Mount # 18140. Let me know how this works out for you.

I bought the Hitch, wiring harness and a bicycle rack for our 2018 Honda Pilot.
The wiring harness was missing from the order and I never followed up on the missing harness since I mainly use the hitch only for the bike rack.
Can you still make this right and send the wiring harness. I'd like to use the hitch to tow a small trailer so I could really use the harness now. Thank You

Five stars for the good installation video and customer support.

Nice quality. Arrived on time. Installation video was super helpful. Great experience.

by:

Hitch is of good solid manufacture.
I
had no issues with the install.
Trailer wiring with the harness went well with the helpful instructional website videos.

by:

Brad instruction was second to none. It helped me hook up the wire harness at no time at all.

by:

I have used etrailer on many projects, mostly hitches and wiring accessories. They are always efficient on shipping and their products they sell are always as described. This wiring harness was by far the easiest I’ve ever installed. The video was very helpful and saved me from unnecessary work.

by:

The harness was easy to install, however the location of the 10 amp fuse ends up being behind the interior side panel. If they had moved the fuse location or added longer wire to the fuse it could have been located just past the side panel and all you would need to do is lift the rear storage bin to access it.
The location it is now in requires tools and more difficulty to access the fuse.

  • Is My 2016 Honda Pilot Trailer Wiring 7-way or Only 4-way?
Your 2016 Honda Pilot will have a trailer wiring plug behind the driver's side at the rear by your tail lights. I've attached a video of the Curt # C56291 harness to assist. The Curt wiring harness # CU86FR is the 7-way wiring harness that connects to the same location. Each kit activates the tow package already available in your vehicle, so I recommend installing the 7-way unless you know you will only ever use the 4-way. It is a little more work on the installation side but gives you...

You won't need to trim or remove any panels for the hitch or the brackets to fit on your 2024 Honda Passport. You'll need to bend the no-drill bracket to clear the rear panel and you can choose to trim it if you wish, but it won't be a necessity. - Curt Wiring # C56291 - Mounting Brackets # 18144 and # C57202
