Rob: Rob here at etrailer.com and today you're going to be taking a look at the Hopkins Multi-tow 7-way blade and 4-way connector on our 2019 GMC Canyon. Now here's what our connector is going to look like and it is going to buy us both that 7-way blade RV style connector as well as a 4-way flat connector. Those are going to be the two most common connectors you'll find on trailers. It's going to provide us with all the lights and functions that you would find either in a four or 7-way. 4-way is going to give us all of our tail lights, turn signals, and our brake lights, and the 7-way will give us those functions along with our brake controller signal, a 12 volt power source and our reverse lights. In our connector itself here it's going to be really easy to use.
We'll have the bottom door that's going to give us a 4-way connector. It'll be spring loaded, so this close itself and then on top we'll have our 7-way connector. Now each one of the doors is going to be spring loaded and have a gasket in there so it'll keep all the dirt, debris and moisture out of the inside so you don't have to worry about any corrosion. And what I like most about this connector is it's going to replace the dummy plug that goes right here and it looks like it's straight from the factory. So if you just bought a camper, a trailer, or if you already have one, you want to tow it with your GMC Canyon. This is going to be a great way to get those signals to your trailer.
And at the same time it's going to look factory and be a really extremely easy installation. We're not going to have to worry about messing with our tail lights and tapping into anything because our tow package wiring is actually going to be right behind our bumper here. And we can simply just take a few butt connectors and connect the harness from our plug to our tow package. In fact, let's go and do that together now. To begin our installation, we want to come to the back of our Canyon and on the left hand side of our bumper right next to our license plate we're going to find this dummy plug. We need to move underneath the bumper so we can get to the access on the back side of this.
So on the back of our license plate area we'll find our dummy plug here and on each side it's going to have a couple of little tabs. Want to squeeze those tabs, grab the outside of the plug and pull it out. These little tabs will release the tension on it and we'll be able to pull the plug out. So we can grab our new plug now.We want to put it in the same way we took out the old one. Just slide it in, we'll hear it lock into position.
Now if we move back underneath just towards the driver's side behind our bumper here, we should find a bundle of wires that have heat shrink on the end of them. It may or may not be attached to the frame using a clip. If it is, we can just pull it off. Give us a little bit more room to work with. Just going to move my wire around so I don't have to worry about catching the other ones. We're going to want to cut off the heat shrink and strip back a little bit from each one of these wires.I'm just going to go through, strip off the insulation so we have a little bit of exposed copper showing. I'll do that for all seven wires back here. And now we can grab the harness out of our kit. Now this is also going to have seven wires. Six of them are going to have blunt cut ends on them, but our white wires are going to have a ring terminal. So we have a few different options of how we can hook this up. But regardless we want to strip back the six wires that have blunt cut ends. So we have a little bit of copper showing just like these. Now since we have a ground wire coming from our truck, I'm not going to use the ring terminal because I would rather hook it to the ground here than drill another hole in my truck. So I'm going to go ahead and cut the ring terminal off. And then I'll strip back the end and we can take some of the butt connectors from our kit and start connecting all of our wires up. So we'll start by going through the color combinations that are going to hook up together. If we look at the colors on our truck, we'll start with our black wire. It's going to be that thick one. That's going to get hooked to the white wire on our new harness. Then if we move down to the brown wire that's on our truck, that's going to get hooked to the brown wire on our harness. The yellow wire will get hooked up to our yellow wire. The green wire is going to get hooked to the green. The gray wire on our truck is going to get hooked to the purple wire. The blue wire, the light color blue, that's going to get hooked to the other light color blue wire on our harness. And then finally the orange wire off of our truck we're going to hook to the red wire on our harness. So we'll go ahead and start with our white wire. We're going to take one of the yellow butt connectors from our kit, just a little bit bigger assistance. These wires are bigger, it'll fit better. We'll slide it over the end of our wire, crimp it down and we'll slide the other end over our black wire. Make sure all the wire gets inside the butt connector and crimp it in place. We're just going to go through continuing to hook up the rest of our wires until every wire is connected.Once you have all your wires connected, it should look like this. And since our wiring's on the outside of our truck. It's at the back and it's underneath, but it's still going to be exposed to some of the elements. So I'm going to take some electrical tape and I'm going to wrap my entire harness here, including the butt connectors, hopefully keeping out any kind of moisture and preventing any kind of corrosion from building up.We're going to wrap this up really good and I can even tie up all the excess and then just come all the way down to the socket. So I have a nice neat little bundle. Now that all of our wiring connections are made, I want to bring our attention to the end of the plug. Now before we plug this in to the back where we've mounted the plug, I'm going to put a little bit of dielectric grease inside the connector. And again, that'll help prevent any kind of moisture from getting inside and hopefully prevent any kind of corrosion build up. Now this little packet is going to come with your kit, so I just recommend just putting a good amount on the inside. And just basically fill that little cavity up.Once we have a good amount in there, we'll bring it up. They'll be a little tab on the plug. I want to line it up with the tab on the wiring, we're just going to push it in until it locks into place. Give it a quick tug, make sure it's locked in place. Now the last step is going to be testing our wiring to make sure everything works properly. So I went ahead and plugged my Canyon to a tester and you can use your trailer at home if you don't have a tester. But as I run through my lights, we can see what all is functioning properly. If we look up at the top gauge, we can see that we're getting a 12 volt power source at the back. So we know we're getting voltage. I turned my headlights on and we can see that my clearance lights are working as well as the left turn signal, the right turn signal, and our brakes. And if I even start my truck up, we're going to also be able to have a reverse circuit for our trailer as well. And currently our truck does not have a brake controller in it, but if yours does, you're going to have that function back at the 7-way too. But again, I'm Rob here at etrailer.com and that'll finish up your look at the Hopkins Multi-tow seven blade and 4-way connector on our 2019 GMC Canyon.
My second hitch receiver from e trailer. My other car has one and it was perfect fit as well. 2024 Colorado. I had to remove the stock one and put in the E trailer hitch crossmember. I watched the video a couple of times. I actually like the video on the 2024 Canyon better. Both great videos. It took me about 2.5 hours. I was by myself so it took a little effort. But not bad at all. I didn’t even get mad or yell. Except for how tight the original bolts were. Make sure you have the tools you need before starting. I definitely needed the break over bar. They are 21mm bolts. Cleaned the holes after removal much easier going back in. The two bumper nuts are 15mm.
The wires on the vehicle have some tricky disconnects but the video helps with that. All in all very easy swap out. It looks great too.
Replaced the plastic fake cap on the bumper with the new 7 pin 4 pin connector from
e trailer.
I purchased this for my 2024 Chevy Colorado Z71. It was pretty much plug and play for me. My truck had the pre-wiring plug already installed so all I had to do was plug in the Hopkins Multi-Tow connector and snap it back in my bumper. I immediately backed up to my boat trailer and tried the 4 prong plug and all lights worked perfectly.
The parts all came in a timely manner. No surprises with missing parts and able to complete the service on time. Wiring was simple and straight forward.
Must have component for safe towing. Clean OEM looking trailer connector. Fairly simple installation with the convenience of both round and flat pin connection points.
The cable and the connector are top notch. The barrel crimps were disappointing because they were not heat shrink. Expecting them to be heat shrink caused the plastic to melt and expand, not shrink. Being an electronics technician for 20 years on Radar equipment kind of gives me some credibility about what I am saying.
I purchased this wiring kit for my 2021 Chevy Colorado about one year ago and I highly recommend it. The self-installation was easy after viewing the videos provided by etrailer. It fit perfectly in my bumper and looks just like the OEM kit. All lights tested perfectly.
Perfect fit and easy to install..love the fast shipping also

Like it was just installed..would definitely buy another if and when this ever goes bad
Connector kit worked exactly as advertised. Was easy to install using provided wiring documentation from etrailer
Looks like it was factory installed. My truck had a wire for the ground so I tucked the white wire inside the flex tubing with the other wires and cut it to the same length as the others. It ended up being a neat looking installation.

Very happy with the wiring harness. No problems at all. Not sure why it says Ford Flex next to my name??? I have a Chevy Colorado...
Exactly like the original. Truck came with a empty plug. Easy to wire up and install. You can see it to the left of license plate. Just like factory made.

Still working as it should. Whats not to like about that? Easy to install on my 2019 Colorado WT that didnt come with hitch or trailer wiring. Im 72 yrs. old, so if I can install it. Anyone can!
Easy to install. perfect fit.
I would like to thank the folks at Etrailer for all your help and a great product.
The video on the website made my installation a breeze.
I will use the video on installing the trailer light hook up as well.

Thanks again
I had read that the wires were a little short, but once I got everything connected up they were just fine. It was really easy to install and it looks like the factory installed ones. I did un-tape the harness and cut the ground wire to the length of the other wires then I tucked it in the insulation and taped it all up again before I connected it to the trucks wiring harness.
Perfect fit for my Canyon
We got the part in quick order and it was exactly what we needed.
Direct fit, 1 minute install.

WOW Jack! It took me longer to type this comment then it did for you to install it. Are you towing anything fun?
Very easy installation followed all installation thanks for all connections parts including grease.
correct fit for my truck
Wired a 7/4 way to 2017 Colorado...
quick AND easy!!! The colored wiring diagram was accurate.....
The only problem I had was eventually figuring out the Pollak 12-741EV tester you sold me had to be plugged in with the test light indicators facing downwards. A hand held mirror placed under the plugged in 7 way tester did the trick,
and BTW the 7/4 connector only installs one way:
7 pole round on top and 4 pole flat on the bottom.
Easy to connect, works great. Packaged good to protect it. No issues or problems.
You’re product as the only one that offered a pig tail harness. Thanks
The service was fast and the parts were exactly as described. The quality of the hitch and the wiring harness were excellent. I will definitely use etrailer again.
Excellent product service and execution. 100% free for them for my future needs.
Almost effortless installation
Fast shipping. The Hopkins wiring harness was easy to install and it looks and fits like an OEM part.

Sweet! Glad to hear that! I used to go past a Christian Brothers Auto on my way to ballet class when I was a kid. :) How's business these days?
