2014 Ford Explorer - Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector

  • Custom Fit
  • Trailer Hitch Wiring
  • Curt
  • 4 Flat
  • No Converter

Quickly and easily install a 4-way trailer connector on your Ford Explorer with this custom harness. T-connector plugs directly into existing wiring - no cutting, splicing or tapping required.

Features:

  • Provides a 4-way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer's signal lights
    • Compatible with 5-pole, 6-pole and 7-pole adapters (sold separately)
  • Connects quickly and easily - no cutting or splicing of wires
    • Locate connection points at the rear, on the passenger's side
    • Plug in T-connector
  • Comes with dust cap for 4-way flat connector
  • Limited 1-year warranty

Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located beneath the rear of your vehicle, on the passenger's side.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

The harness was easy to install, on my 2017 Ford Explorer, while I had the exhaust lowered. Easy to connect. The cable ties were too short to attach the wire loom to the main support tube of the hitch. I used much longer ones. Other than that, the wiring harness went in just as described on the video. 870356

E-trailer representatives went above and beyond to help me find what I needed. Meghan provided me assistance by making recommendations/suggestions, editing my cart for me, and also placed a rush order on the products I purchased without charging me for it. The online instructional videos helped me and my son properly put on the hitch. They made it easy to understand and follow along. We can not wait to go camping in the mountains of Colorado towing our RV. I highly recommend shopping with e-trailer. You will not regret it. 820100

  • Trailer Wiring Options for a 2014 Ford Explorer without Tow Package
If you use a circuit tester like our part # PTW2993 to test the pins of the plug you found and they are active when you apply taillight functions the # C56172 would work. If none of the circuits are activated when the taillight functions are applied you would have to use the # C59496. I attached an install video for both wiring options that show them being installed on a 2014 Ford Explorer just like yours to the right.

  • Trailer Wiring Harness for a 2014 Ford Explorer XLT Without the Factory Tow Package
You may be able to use the Curt T-Connector Wiring Harness, # C56172, on your 2014 Ford Explorer, but before buying the harness, I recommend testing the connector on your Explorer to make sure it works. Sometimes vehicle manufacturers will leave the factory trailer wiring in place, but they will not include the fuses and relays necessary to make the wiring active. Using a circuit tester like part # 40376, test the pins in the factory connector while a helper runs through the tail light...

  • Trailer Wiring Harness for a 2014 Ford Explorer
Curt trailer wiring # C56172 is designed to fit a 2014 Ford Explorer that came with the factory tow package. If your Explorer does not have the factory tow package then the connectors for the harness will either not be present or they will not be functional. It sounds like your model does not have the factory tow package so you would need to use Hopkins harness # HM40285. It is also possible that the one connector you see and the one that is capped off are the connectors for the tow...

  • Trailer Wiring Harnesses For a 2014 Ford Explorer Without Factory Tow Package
On a 2014 Ford Explorer the connector in question should already be plugged into another connector so that when you disconnected them you can plug in # C56172 like in the video I linked showing installation of a similar harness, # 118540. If your Explorer is set up differently then instead of a T-connector harness you will need to use a hardwire harness # 119147KIT. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you.

The Curt trailer wiring harness part # C56172 that you referenced is a fit for your 2014 Ford Explorer and does not require any additional converters. It would be a plug and play option that installs very easily. Check out the install video I attached that shows the harness installed in a 2014 Ford Explorer just like yours.

  • Recommended Trailer Wiring Harness for a 2018 Ford Explorer Without Trailer Hitch
The trailer wiring harness options for a 2018 Ford Explorer can be narrowed down to two categories, models with the tow package and models without the tow package. If you don't have a trailer hitch then you won't have the tow package therefore I recommend using the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness part # C56172 if you only need a 4-way or part # C56306 for a 7-way. These options are both plug-n-play. That said, you'd also need a trailer mounting bracket to install either option,...

  • LED Trailer Lights Not Compatible With 2013 Ford Escape
We see often that the LED trailer lights do not offer enough draw on the system for the lights to work. Sometimes you will also get a bulb-out warning in the vehicle. An adapter that has load resistors in it, # TR20141, can provide enough draw so the lights will work and so you will not get that bulb-out warning. The adapter # C57003 will go from a 7-Way to a 7-Way for your situation.

  • Trailer Wiring Harness Fit for a 2013 Ford Explorer
Vehicles frequently have multiple connectors along the frame rail or behind the rear bumper. The functions of these connectors can vary from tow package wiring to backup sensor wiring to tail light wiring. • Replacement 4- and 7-Way Trailer Connectors for a 2013 Ford Explorer
If you follow the 7-Way wiring back and find that it plugs into a round connector then you could use # C55774 which has both a 7- and 4-Way built in. Another option, if your 7-Way socket itself has a round connector plugged into the back of it (that isn't damaged), is to use # HM40975 which is just the 7- and 4-Way sockets without any wiring.

  • Hitch Cover Availability with Brake Light that Doesn't Blink with Blinker
Sounds like the hitch light you referenced is gets the stoplight circuit from the right turn/stop circuit (these circuits are combined) and that is why the unit blinks with the blinker. On this adapter, the white wire must be grounded to the vehicle frame in order for the connector to function. The other 3 wires can be tied up if they are not going to be used. • Installing Curt T-Connector # C56172 on 2013 Ford Explorer
According to my contact in the tech services department at Curt, what we are looking at in your photo is a protective cap placed on the connector. You would need to remove the protective cap from each connector, then plug the # C56172 inline between the two connectors. You would then have a functioning 4-pole connector.
