2014 Ford Explorer - Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector

Quickly and easily install a 4-way trailer connector on your Ford Explorer with this custom harness. T-connector plugs directly into existing wiring - no cutting, splicing or tapping required.

Features:

  • Provides a 4-way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer's signal lights
    • Compatible with 5-pole, 6-pole and 7-pole adapters (sold separately)
  • Connects quickly and easily - no cutting or splicing of wires
    • Locate connection points at the rear, on the passenger's side
    • Plug in T-connector
  • Comes with dust cap for 4-way flat connector
  • Limited 1-year warranty

Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located beneath the rear of your vehicle, on the passenger's side.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Video Transcript for Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness Installation - 2017 Ford Explorer

Rob: Hey, everybody. Rob here at etrailer.com, and today we're going to be taking a look at the CURT T-connector vehicle wiring harness on our 2017 Ford Explorer. Now, our CURT T-connector harness is going to provide us with a four pole flat trailer connector, so we have all the required lights to get down the road safely, like your stop lights, your turn signals, and even your tail lights.I do want to mention, we have ours mounted to our hitch using a four pole bracket. Now, if your hitch doesn't have a spot to mount it, you can still use a four pole bracket. You may just need to pick up a no drill bracket in an addition, but I think it just gives it a cleaner look and really easy to access when we need to. That's going to provide us with a dust cover because our wiring is designed to stay on the outside, so we'll make sure all that dirt, debris and grime stays out of our connectors, and we shouldn't have any kind of issues when it comes to connections.

So, we can just hook up to our trailer and hit the road. Now, one of my favorite parts about the wiring is how easy it is to install. It's just going to have a simple connector at the back of our bumper. We're just going to unplug that, plug in a connector in line with it, and then just ride it over the edge. We're not going to have to mess with our tail lights. We're not going to have the cut or splice anything.

It's just going to plug into a factory port. In fact, it's so easy, let's go on and walk through everything. To begin our installation, we want to come to the very back of our Explorer, and we're going to move over to the passenger side just on the outside of the muffler. Oh, and right on the outside of the body here, we should have two factory plugs. I'm going to bring our attention to the black plug, or the one that's going to be closest to the front of the vehicle. We need to separate the connector here.

Now, this has got a lot of dirt, debris, and mud on it, so I'm going to use a screwdriver to press in on the tab right here. At the same time, I'm going to pull down on the connector, hopefully separating it.Lot of times, though, when you get a lot of dirt and debris, the connectors want to stick together pretty well, and it is a little difficult to get them apart. Again, you just want to use a screwdriver or something to give you a little more leverage. Push in on that tab, and then squeeze and pull the connectors apart. So, we want to grab our new harness, and the connectors on the end of our harness are going to match the ones that are on our factory one. Before I plug them in, though, I am going to put a little bit dielectric grease in both the connectors, and this will just hopefully help out with any kind of corrosion build up on the inside, keeping all that moisture out.

I suggest putting dielectric grease on any kind of connector that you take apart. If you need some, you can pick some up here at etrailer.com. Just fill up the connectors, find the matching one, and we can plug them in. We can plug in the other one. Make sure that locks in.So, I'm going to go ahead and put the dust cover over my four pole connector. Now, if you're not using a bracket, you can zip tie all your excess wire. You can actually use the dust cover to attach it to your hitch. So, when you're going down the road, it won't be hanging down, but since we are going to be using our cover, I always like to put the cover on first. Then I'll take my four pole, and the small little tabs here are going to fit into the bracket. We're just going to work it back and forth until the top and bottom are sticking through, and that compression fit is what's going to keep it in place. So, we're just going to go back, zip tie up all the excess wire here, and then we can test our wiring to make sure everything works properly.I went ahead and plugged in my four pole tester, and you can find these here at etrailer.com. I suggest using a tester to test your wiring rather than plugging it into your trailer, because if there's a problem on the trailer, we're not going to be able to isolate just our wiring and see if it's working. Now that we have our tester plugged in, I'm going to grab an extra set of hands, run through our lights, and verify that they're all working. So, if I turn on my headlights, we can see that my tail light function is working, well as my left turn signal, my right turn signal, and my brakes. Now that we know that our trailer wiring is working, that'll finish up your installation, and your look at the CURT T-connector vehicle wiring harness on our 2017 Ford Explorer.

Comments

We spoke with Curt Manufacturing, who tells us that if the correct connector under the vehicle was used, this harness should have no effect on any other electronic components on the vehicle. The correct connector is located on the passenger side of the vehicle, behind the rear wheel well. Theres two different possible install scenarios that you might have encountered. If theres already a plug installed into the connector found under the vehicle, unplug it and install the # C56172 inline with that connection. If there is NOT a plug in the connector already, remove the cap from the plug, plug the # C56172 into the connector and use the cap on the other connector. The problem youre experiencing is either because the wrong connector was used, or because the other plug that was originally plugged into the connector wasnt plugged into the other connector on the # C56172.

  • On a 2013 Ford Explorer that did not come with a factory installed 7-Way trailer connector, you can use Curt wiring harness # C56172 that you have referenced. It will install underneath the vehicle at the back on the passengers side. The factory connection point should be behind the rear tire. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view. I have also linked a video showing a typical installation of another harness that fits in the same place on your vehicle.

  • Hitch Cover Availability with Brake Light that Doesn't Blink with Blinker
  • Sounds like the hitch light you referenced is gets the stoplight circuit from the right turn/stop circuit (these circuits are combined) and that is why the unit blinks with the blinker. The # CR-017 might be a better option for you as it will only blink with a blinker if the brake are already being applied. With just the blinkers on it would not flash.

I have linked installation videos of both the Tekonsha I recommended as well as the Curt # C56172 being installed on a 2016 Ford Explorer so you can see for yourself the exact...

  • Installing Curt T-Connector # C56172 on 2013 Ford Explorer
  • According to my contact in the tech services department at Curt, what we are looking at in your photo is a protective cap placed on the connector. Somewhere near the connector you found, there should be the other half of the connector. You would need to remove the protective cap from each connector, then plug the # C56172 inline between the two connectors. You would then have a functioning 4-pole connector.

  • Recommended Trailing Hitch and Wiring for a 2011 Ford Explorer
  • In order for you to double-check if you have an existing towing package or not, is to have your local Ford dealer run your VIN. You can also look on your vehicle to see if there happens to be a tow package. Sometimes they are difficult to see because of being hidden. Our most popular trailer hitch for your 2011 Ford Explorer is the Curt # C13386. It is a Class-III hitch and has a towing capacity of 4,000 pounds. It's a bolt on application so no drilling is required. On that note,...
