Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 1999 Ford Ranger

Today on our 1999 Ford Ranger, we'll install the custom fit vehicle wiring harness 4-pole connector, part number 118241. To begin our install, we'll first need to locate the manufacturer's tow port. For this application, it's behind the bumper here on the driver's side. To gain access to it, we'll just take a trim panel tool or flat blade screwdriver and pry the connector free from the secured point behind the bumper. Then once we have access to the connector, we'll need to remove the weather cap. To do that, we'll press in the locking tab and pull it out from the connector.

We'll go ahead and check the mating surface to make sure it's clean and free from any dirt, dust, or corrosion buildup. Once we've done that, I recommend to use some Dielectric Grease on this connection point. We'll be using the Edelman Dielectric Grease, part number 11755. Now with our Dielectric Grease on and the connector ready, we'll go ahead and plug in the new tow-ready harness. We'll make sure we firmly press it into place, and that it locks into position.

We'll also secure the 4-pole harness here to the hitch, and now we're ready to secure our wiring harness. Using some black zip ties, we'll go ahead and secure the connector and wiring behind the bumper, and then we'll go ahead and cut off the excess from the zip ties to clean up our install look. Now that we've completed installing our new 4-pole harness, we'll go ahead and check it with a test light. To do that, we'll take the ground clamp and put it on the ground stud of the 4-pole connector, which will test the ground circuit, and then we'll run through the lighting sequence, checking the running, left blinker, right blinker, and brake connection points. And with that done, this will complete our installation and testing of the tow-ready custom fit vehicle wiring 4-pole connector, part number 118241, on our 1999 Ford Ranger..

Product was exactly as advertised, VERY easy to install. Plug and play. Sadly, I needed to buy a converter, because there was no power coming to the factory tow wires on my 99 Ford Explorer Sport; which rendered the product I purchased useless. Very disappointing, but not eTrailer's fault. I guess there was a short in the wiring on my truck somewhere. Oh well D: Overall, great site, great service, great products. Despite my sob story, I had a great experience here, and would definitely buy from here again. Thanks guys! 229814

Harness came quickly and appears to be OEM harness as described. Original harness connection was behind the left tail lite. Capsule was removed (two screws at top of tail-lite). Connection was done and cable routed and positioned under bumper in less than 5 minutes. I presume the old harness had some corrosion as this did the trick. I did purchase a flexible cable protector to put around the harness wiring to prevent damage. It took me longer to write this review than it did to fix my problem. 109950

Using some electrical contact grease, like part 11755, will help keep moisture out and drastically slow corrosion.

The product ordered is a "trailer tow wiring harness" used for a 1995 Ford Explorer so that the unusual connector Ford used can connect to a 4 prong flat (common trailer connector). The correct item was sent quickly and the order process was simple and straight forward. Notification of order acceptance, preperation, and shipping were sent by e-mail and they were posted promptly. The service could not have been better 91799

The website is very easy to use. The video showing how to install the wiring assembly was very helpful for both showing me how to do it myself and for convincing me that it was the correct part. Well done! Your follow through was also exceptional. You told me and showed me where it was and when it would arrive, a great help. The part came today and I have already installed it! Thank you very much! 6101

Plug and play. Ford made hooking up trailer lights for the Explorer easy. If you have this harness kit, just unhook the left rear taillight, pull it out, plug this into the connector that's on your truck's wiring, and you are done. Beginning to end, it takes about three minutes to wire your truck for trailer lights with this. 163803

I bought this harness for my 99' Explorer and it worked beautifully, plug right in on driver side rear inside tail light to connect to my tow lights or trailer. The harness is long enough the reach the center of the bumper with out a problem. Great shipping price and time, only 5 days to get to Alaska great job!!!! 103864

118241 Had to replace? not sure just wasn't making good connection, reordered it from e trailer just last month. Everything else still in great working order! Trailer wiring to battery needs to be change, the battery negative post area has accelerated corrosion where the wires are hooked to battery post. 317484

I'm really excited about this product, the old Ranger I got for the boy has the matching plug up under the bed, it looks to be of high quality and I was not looking forward to splicing wires on this installation. This will solve that issue. I am very pleased to have run across this wiring solution. 43363

Product works as advertised, plugged right in to stock harness. Last time I checked for a previous Mountaineer I owned 5 years ago, the Ford dealer wanted about $30 for the same part. Also included were two wire ties which was nice even though I have my own. Will do business here again. 145258

Very easy to install. Product is very easy to install if you have the towing package but it is not very long. You will need a long cable on your trailer or get an extension. It only reachs the bumper on my Explorer. Maybe the length should be stated in the product description. 898

So glad to have found this. I have a female connector that came with my 2000 Explorer. The trailer "professionals" in my area only knew about an adapter kit (4X the cost and a lot more DIY time). This installed as easily as plugging in a lamp. Two minute install time. 86701

  • Installation of a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 1997 Ford Explorer Without Factory Tow Package
  • First, you need to find out If your Ford Explorer is equipped with a tow-package port (90 percent are). If so use, item # 118241, which is much simpler to hook up. The plug is usually located in the rear of the vehicle on the driver side. However, the plug can also be found on the passenger side and sometimes even on both sides. If your 1998 model Explorer has the factory tow package installed the correct connector for the trailer wiring harness, # 118421, is sometimes on the drivers side or the passengers side. There is a very similar connector that the harness will not plug into on the opposite side in most every case. Go to the other side and locate the connector there and I am confident your wiring harness...

  • Installing 7-Way Trailer Connector on 1998 Ford Explorer to Power Interior Trailer Lights
  • You can certainly add a 7-way connector to your Explorer. Assuming that your Explorer has the tow package, you can begin with the # 118241 4-pole harness that you referenced. If you do NOT have the tow package, you will need to use # 118345. Then, install the # 37185 4-pole to 7-way adapter. The adapter will plug into the 4-pole provided by the # 118241, leaving some remaining wires that might need to be connected. The white wire needs to be grounded to the vehicle frame, and the...

  • 1999 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer Trailer Connector
  • In my research, I wasn't able to find out definitively if all the Eddie Bauer Explorers included a trailer connector. Some 1999 models were equipped with a towing package which included the 4-pole trailer connector. What I read seemed to indicate that if the vehicle was equipped with the factory trailer hitch, it'll have the factory wiring. Determining how your particular vehicle is equipped would be very simple. Look behind the rear bumper on the passenger side of the vehicle for a...

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 1997 Ford Explorer with 15 Inch Tires and Factory Tow Package
  • Since you have P235/75R15 inch tires on your 1997 Ford Explorer all of the hitches we list will fit. The Hidden Hitch Class III 2 Inch Hitch, part # 70647 and the Draw-Tite Class III 2 Inch Hitch, part # 75083 are the same hitch just with a different name on them. The Reese, Hidden Hitch, and Draw-Tite are all manufactured by the same company. I would recommend the Hidden Hitch # 70647 for your 1997 Ford Explorer. It is a simple installation with no drilling required. It has a gross...

  • The Draw-Tite hitch # 75096 will fit with the full size, 16 inch spare tire on a 1998 Ford Explorer. I have included a link to the installation details for you. On 1995 and newer models, you should not have to do any drilling to install the hitch as indicated in the instructions. Be sure to consult the vehicle owners manual to determine the towing...

  • Trailer Connector for 1992 Ford Explorer With Tow Package
  • You're correct, the connector you found under the truck sure looks like it would fit, but I can't confirm the fit of the # 118241. I spoke with my contact in the Tech Services department at Tow Ready, he believes that before 1995, that connector you found was pinned out differently. If that's the case, the # 118241 won't work for your vehicle. I'd recommend you use the # C55324, which is a confirmed fit.

  • The Draw-Tite Class II 1-1/4 Inch Hitch, part # 36246, will fit your 2000 Ford Explorer 4WD with the factory OEM full size spare tire. When installing the hitch the spare tire is loosened to allow the hitch to line up with the holes on the frame and it is re-tightened after the hitch is installed. If your vehicle is equipped with tow hooks, they will need to be removed. I am including a link to the installation instructions on the Draw-Tite hitch. If you plan on doing some towing...

  • Can 1997 Ford Explorer with Bumper Mounted Hitch Ball Tow a 1,000 lb Trailer
  • You should have no problem at all towing that trailer. A bumper mounted hitch ball typically has a capacity of 350 lbs tongue weight/ 3500 lbs towing, which is well above the 1000 lbs your trailer weighs. Just for safety's sake, I'd recommend you confirm the bumper's capacity by checking with your owner's manual. A trailer of that size would likely use a standard 4-pole trailer connector. If your Explorer does not already have a trailer connector, you can install one using part # 118345,...

  • Installing 4-Way Wiring Harness On 1995 Ford Explorer
  • The wiring harness for your 1995 Ford Explorer should be on the passenger side of the vehicle behind the bumper. This harness should have a cap on it you can remove and then plug the harness designed for your vehicle, part # 118241 right into it. The harness you found may not be the correct one. Per the instructions for the # 118241, you will find the connector on the passenger side behind the bumper for an Explorer. When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric...

  • Installing Wiring Harness on 1999 Ford Explorer with Factory Tow Harness
  • If your 1999 Ford Explorer came equipped with a factory wiring harness, then the part you referenced, Tow Ready # 118241 is a correct fit. The round plug on this plug-and-play 4-pole harness connects to a matching round plug on the vehicle. While there could be multiple plugs on the vehicle only one will carry the lighting signals for a trailer. You can use a tester like # 40376 to probe the wires on the vehicle plugs while the turn signals and lights are engaged. Once you confirm the...

  • Troubleshooting Running Lights Not Working on Trailer Wiring of 1999 Ford Ranger
  • For your 1999 Ford Ranger the # 118241 is a confirmed fit. If that is what you have installed on yours and the running lights aren't working the first thing you will want to do is test the pin with the brown wire behind it on the 4-way for voltage when the headlights or running lights are on. I attached a video that details how to do this. If there is voltage there then the problem is on the trailer. Make sure that the trailer side connector are clean and free of corrosion inside...

  • 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness For 1994 Ford Explorer
  • I called my contact at the manufacturer and the connector you sent the photo of sure looks like the mate for the Tow Package Wiring Harness, part # 118241. Since the # 118241 was designed to fit Explorers from 1995 and up, they may possibly have used the connector earlier. You can do some testing of the wires to see if this will work. • How to Determine if a 1998 Ford Explorer has the Automatic Ride Control Feature
  • The easiest way to determine if your 1998 Ford Explorer has the factory air leveling system (automatic ride control) is to call a Ford dealer and have them look up the VIN in their computer system to see how that vehicle was equipped. If the system is supposed to work automatically then I would think that you would have heard an on-board air compressor kick on at some point to level the vehicle. You also may want to check the vehicle owners manual because sometimes they will list the...
