Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

the hitch went on"without a hitch". All the holes were in the correct places. Took a little work because we live on rural gravel roads and the frames were packed solid inside with mud and stones so we had to clean them out to fish the bolts through but otherwise, everything fit and went together. Total project took about 2 hours but much of it was getting to the holes in the vehicle frame.

Only two things I would suggest to improve this item, more zip ties (cost about $0.12), and better splices (costs about $0.13). If this kit had better splices and a few more zip ties it would be sheer perfection! As it is it is still awesome! I bought the and harness, Put it on my 8 day old car that Dodge wanted $395 to add a tow package on for less than half the price. WAY better this way!!! Costs less money and took me about an hour TOTAL INSTALL TIME for both the hitch AND the harness!!! Love etrailer.com, so far everything has been spot on!! Only thing left is to buy the 4-pin to 7-pin adapter that hard mounts to my hitch and all is done!
I love how they showed my exact vehicle install on video. Makes EVERYTHING easier! Makes deterring what to buy a no brainer. Made my first hitch install look like I was a pro! It's like having a GPS unit, makes you an instant expert on getting where you are going.

This t-harness is the way to go! Do yourself a favor and buy heat shrink butt connectors, wire loom, and good double sided tape. I’m a mechanic so I’m a little picky and have the box mounted inside the vehicle behind the interior panels. Even with the box mounted inside, my green wire is long enough. Ive included a picture of the routing I’ve chosen for my wires to keep away from the exhaust, up and away from road debris, and also give you PLENTY of wire to reach the passenger side. The picture is of under the drivers side tail light. Run your wire above the bumper support and back of spare tire. It’s a little bit of fishing to do this but the overall routing length is shorter, giving you enough wire to reach the passenger side. I’d recommend wire loom on the entire wire to prevent rubbing as there are some sharp edges.

had it installed at a local trailer shop it took about 1hr worked great thanks

by:

Running wires underneath the vehicle and across the rear end was a little annoying to do, but the instructional videos made it easy to understand what to do. Overall, I don't think you'd be disappointed with this kit. The only issue I have with this kit is that the included double-sided foam tape did not stick at all. You're supposed to stick the "controller" (not sure what the device is called) to the inside of the rear bumper under the driver side tail light. But the tape simply did not stick for me. The controller kept falling so it was hanging by the wires. I even tried some foam tape I had already but that didn't work either. I don't think the foam tape is the best way to go here. But I also don't know what the better solution is. Maybe it'll work better for you? Regardless of the controller woes it's a good kit and I'd certainly buy it again.

Dodge Journey SXT Curt 56330 wiring for LED tail lights.
Everything you need is included. Nice kit. The reviews were right, the green wire for the passenger side is about 4 inches short. I would think that Curt would remedy this or and least give the following instruction. Remove the green wire from the white notice wrapped around the wire bundle coming out of the power module. This will you the few extra inches you need. I see that the notice has been removed from the wires in the review of the wiring kit. I don’t have a vehicle lift, so the running of the power wire to the battery took a bit of time. I found that lifting the drivers side of the Journey about a foot and removing the tires let me find a path for the wire to follow. Would have been 5 stars if the green wire was loose so that it would be long enough to start with.

Great hitch receiver! However packaging was minimal. Hardware came loose in box and box had holes. Luckily none fell out of package. Vehicle wiring kit works great but two of the plugs that accept original tail light wiring were poorly made, they plugged well together but would not click as the latch was made sloppy and slightly mismatched. But everything lights up and working.

I would when recommend double checking that the clips on the plugs are in good shape and to make as tight of connection as possible. Once the harness is installed it would be beneficial to use a tester like part # I26 to check the harness each time before towing.

This harness worked just as intended. The only complaint I have is it wasn't very detailed on where to drill the hole for the ground screw. Also I used some heat shrink butt connectors that I had laying around.

Installed yesterday, in my driveway and I am very satisfied with the hitch and wiring kits, as well as the instructional videos from etrailer. The only complication was a wiring hardness mounted on the driver side read bumper cover, that I had to relocate.

I am a DIY kinda Guy and I found the detailed videos an excellent study guide for how to, along with tips and tricks to make it easier. I haul three different trailers and each has been pulled using the tow bar and wire harness purchased from etrailer with great satisfaction. When I purchased my Dodge Journey from a Dodge dealer, they wanted $2000.00 to install a Curt Hitch, I did it for much less with etrailer and still had money left to actually go on the vacation instead of putting it into the same exact hitch package I bought right here. As I said I'm a DIYer and I will take all the free advice and help I can get. etrailer helped me to Get R done...

by:
DodgeJourney

I was really disappointed with the adhesive on the back of the controller. I even washed the area 4 times where I intended to place it and waited long enough for it to dry. Just to say it was very clean and there was no reason for it to fall off when I took my vacation pulling my camper. Glad I had gorilla tape on hand. Had to take time out of my commute to reach up and tape the controller onto the body of my Dodge Journey. 1 year later and it has not fallen off. I was also disappointed in the installation videos recommending that I fix the wire for the 4-way connector by using plastic tie wraps. Looked a bit gaudy when I was done. There should have been a better recommendation.

by:
2013 DodgeJourney

Power lead could be longer and more wire ties. Install was easy but paper instructions could indicate how to best route wires for length suppied Works good. Shipped with not enough packing and package was broke open with parts loose in box.

Loved the product they were easy to install and have remained in good shape over a minnesota winter. However it did not survive a rear end collision. So I will be buying another shortly.

by:

Was a fairly easy install. only hard part was running power wire to front of vehicle. and the double sided tape supplied with kit to mount control box was old and the adhesive was dried out. but just bought some mounting tape at auto parts store to replace that.

by:
2017 DodgeJourney

Excellent product and even better customer service and care. I am extremely happy w/ etrailer and would recommend their products to anyone. Installed on a 2017 Dodge Journey Crossroad in 2 hours complete with wiring harness. Videos perfectly addressed any questions I had and took all the guess-work away.

by:

Everything I expected. The only problem I have had is when I plugged in the trailer with the lights turned on, it blew the fuse. Since then I always remember to keep the lights off while plugging in the trailer.

by:

The harness was easy to install and works great. The only problem I had with it is the harness that goes from the left tail light to the right is too short. It needs to be about 6 inches longer. This harness definitely made installation easy and at a great price.

by:

This wire harness was easy to install. Just unplug the taillights and plug in the harness. It saved a lot of time by not having to figure out which wire goes where. No splicing and all the connectors are high quality. It saved me time and most of all money.

by:
2012 DodgeJourney

I ordered the hitch and wiring harness for my Journey. It was shipped and showed up very quickly. It came with straightforward instructions and the install went very smoothly. I would buy through etrailer again.

by:

Product is as described. I installed it slightly differently than the instructions so the box was mounted inside the vehicle and out of the elements. Everything went together good. Would like to see this kit come with heat shrink butt connectors for the fact they will be exposed to the elements.

Since your 2011 Dodge Journey already has a 4-Way flat trailer connector all you will need to add a brake controller is the brake controller itself and an installation kit that includes a 7-Way trailer connector. There isn't a plug and play type of harness for the 2011 Dodge Journey because the vehicle isn't set up for it even if it has the factory tow package.
