Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Curt Wiring Harness Installation - 2013 Chrysler Town and Country

Speaker 1: Today on our 2013 Chrysler Town & Country we'll be having a look at and showing you how to install the Curt T-connector wiring harness with a four-pole flat trailer connector. Part number C56331.This wiring harness is fairly unique in the regards that we have a nice module here that is nice and sealed from the elements with this silicone gel insert in here that prevents any moisture or contamination from getting inside causing corrosion or possible damage to the sensitive electronics inside. The reason this box is a great thing to have is because this will isolate your vehicle's expensive lighting circuit from your trailer. So if you have a short on your trailer you don't have to worry about any voltage being back-fed into your Town & Country causing potential damage. Here's what our wiring looks like installed. This four-pole flat wiring harness will give us the basic lighting functions that are required by law in order for us to safely and legally tow a trailer. This white wire here provides our necessary ground connection between our Town & Country and our trailer. This brown wire here is for our taillight and our running light circuit. And on this circuit we will have six amps of total power output, which is more than adequate to tow a trailer with a few incandescent light bulbs, probably can run as many LED light bulbs as you want, because they do draw less power. The yellow wire is for our left turn signal and left brake light.

And the green wire is for our right turn signal and right brake light. On both of those circuits you will find three amps of power output. They also have this nice dust cover that's built-in to help protect our connector, when it's not in use, from the elements. I also like to put a little bit of dielectric grease inside to help protect it as well. We have this available on our website.

This will just defer any corrosion from happening from any potential moisture. When you wanna store your wiring harness, you can use the dust cover to clip it around your hooks or your safety chains on your hitch. This will keep it from dangling and make it readily accessible for when you need it.Now that we've gone over some features we'll show you how to get it installed. To begin our install we'll open up our hatch. Now we need to remove our taillight assemblies. We have 2 10 millimeters screws, 1 on the top, 1 on the bottom, that we need to remove. Now we can pull back on the taillight assembly.

Wiggle it back and forth a little bit. Find a connector. It's a red tab. Slide it back. It'll press down on the black tab.

And pull to separate. We'll do the same for the other side. Now our key 00:03:11 connector that has the single green wire on it, we'll drop this down behind our taillight opening on the driver's side. We'll do the same for our four-pole flat connector. Now the T-connector with the yellow and brown wire we'll connect with the vehicle wiring harness on the driver's side. It only goes in one way so just line it up. Push till it clicks, and there you go.The black wire that comes off of our module, it's already stripped back a little bit. Take one of our butt connectors, stick it over the wire, and we will crimp it into place. Now we'll take one end of the black roll wire that comes with our kit, strip back some insulation, stick it in the other end, and we'll crimp it down. Now we'll take some electrical tape and wrap up our connector. From this point forward every butt connector that we use we'll wrap in electrical tape, this will just help the elements from getting inside causing a short or poor connection. Now the other end of the black wire we'll drop that down behind our driver's side taillight as well. The white wire that comes off of our module with the rain tunnel 00:04:36, this is our ground wire. We need to attach this to the vehicle sheet metal. Right in this area will be fine. And we'll just use the provided self-tapping screw. That'll give us a nice solid ground connection. Now on the back side of our module here, the flat part, we'll take one side of our double-sided tape, peel it off, place it on the back, press down nice and firm, peel off the other side, and we'll stick it in the back side edge of our bumper cover, right in about this area here. Now we will take our driver's side taillight and plug in the T-connector to it. Once we hear the click we'll lock it in place by sliding the red tab back down. And now we'll slide the driver's side taillight back into its original position. I took the liberty to go ahead and route our four-pole flat connector and the connector for our passenger side. Our wires go behind the fascia support tabs here. They have the slack for the four-pole flat zip tied up and secured. Four-pole flat, we just secure to the hitch, safety chain loops here, green wire to the passenger side goes over our exhaust. I dropped down a pole wire behind our passenger side taillight connector. We'll pull our connector up. Remove our pole wire. We'll connect with the vehicle wiring harness. Pull up the excess slack so it's not dangling below the vehicle, and we'll secure it to the wiring harness with a zip tie.The taillight will plug in now. Make sure our tab is pushed in. We routed our power wire towards the front of the vehicle making sure to avoid any moving parts and sources of heat. We went through a slot here on our hitch. Secured it to our sub-frame through this hole with a zip tie. Went above a rear shock mount. Went to the side of our fuel tank. Secured it to our parking brake cable, working our way forward. Wrapped it around our front sub-frame mount. And now we have a pull wire that we dropped down from the engine bay, and we'll connect it to and pull the wire inside. We'll secure it to this wiring harness with a zip tie coming out of our firewall to keep any slack from calling underneath the vehicle. And do it again over here to the power wire that goes into our fuse box. This way if we need to service our battery this wire won't be in the way. Now we'll measure off how much we need to make a connection to our battery, cut off the excess, strip back the insulation. Take one of our butt connectors, stick it over the wire, crimp it. Our fuse holder has a continuous loop of wire, so we'll cut it in the middle to have two separate ends. Strip both back. One end will get the ring terminal, doesn't matter which one. The other end will go into our butt connector. With it crimped we can now tape up our connection like we did on the back. Now we'll open our fuse holder, ensure that there's no fuse in there. We'll remove the nut from our positive post on our battery, it's a 10 millimeter. Take this sleeve off here, too. Slide the ring terminal over the stud, reinstall the sleeve, and put the nut back on. And we'll tighten it. Now we'll take our fuse and install it into the fuse holder, and close the dust cover. And now we'll test out our wiring. We're using a four-pole flat tester that we have available on our website as part number IQ6. The reason we're using this over just hooking up to a trailer because if we had a burned out light bulb or a wiring problem on the trailer, we wouldn't be able to tell if our vehicle is working properly.Start by turning on our headlights. And you can see our taillights and running light functions are working properly. Left turn signal now. That's working. Right turn signal. That's working. Step on the brakes. Those are working. And we'll operate our turn signals while our foot's on the brake. As you can see, everything's working as intended. And that completes our look at and showing you how to install the Curt T-connector vehicle wiring harness with four-pole flat trailer connector, part number C56331 on our 2013 Chrysler Town & Country.

The most common reason powered trailer wiring converter harnesses fail is a short circuit somewhere in the trailer wiring. Before replacing the converter, youll want to closely examine the trailer wiring, beginning with the trailer connector itself. and working your way all the way back to the taillights. Look for broken wires, loose connections or wire with worn or cracked insulation that would allow the copper wire to ground out on the trailer frame or other metal component. If the existing short isnt located and repaired, you will continue to short out your wiring converter. Please see the linked article for more troubleshooting strategies.

Overall I have not been too impressed with the quality of this product. l first purchased one in 2013 to install in our then new 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan and although the installation was easy, this product failed in late 2016. What I first noticed was the passenger side trailer light brake light was stuck when I connected the trailer to the vehicle. Even if the car was off and the vehicle lights were also off. Thus in early 2017 with my original Curt wiring harness out of warranty I just purchased another of these wiring kits from etrailer, installed it and everything worked. However, just a few months ago this newer wiring kit again failed in the same fashion. So I have not returned the second Curt C56331 kit I installed and just received a replacement one, under warranty, from etrailer. I guess I will go ahead and install it but if this third kit now fails, I think I will look for another brand. So overall, although I like the ease of installation, the quality of this wiring kit seems suspect. I do not think I should be on my third wiring kit within 5 years. One problem I think is there is no holes in the control box to affix it to the vehicle with a screw. Thus, it seems that at least the two times I have now removed this kit from the vehicle, the black control box has detached from the provided double sided tape and is swinging around loose. This is not good and may have led to the failure of this electronic box. I noticed that the other brand the etrailer is selling, the T-One product or whatever you call it, has a place where the box can be attached to the vehicle via a screw. Probably a much better way to attach it as at least with a screw, it is not going to come loose. So again the both times I removed this Curt C56331 kit from my vehicle the double-sided tape did not hold. So overall, I am not that impressed with the long-term quality of this item. I mean the first one I installed lasted nearly 4 years, not all that bad, but even that one I hope would last longer. Now the 2nd one I installed failed in less than one year, clearly not good. I guess I will find out how long this 3rd kit lasts soon! So for anyone looking at purchasing a wiring kit for their Grand Caravan, I would honestly recommend the other available product over the Curt Brand. 476589

The harness was well designed with none of the vehicle wiring needing to be cut or spliced. I installed this before the hitch, as recommended by another reviewer, and it gave better access to running wiring between the tail lamp assemblies. I took my time running the power wire forward to the battery and was able to find a nice clean route forward. The only thing I added was a protective cover for all the exposed wiring. I used 30 feet of 3/8" diameter black plastic split loom wire covering. I'm sure it would have been OK without this, but it looks good and makes me feel better about the power lead coming from the battery (always hot) running the whole length of the vehicle. 470177

Worked exactly as designed. Points that could be improved...1) the harness between control box an left turn signal is so short that it makes taillight removal very difficult (add 6" of wire, please). 2) the two sided tape needs to be upgraded. On my Town and Country, there were limited places I could mount it...all of them on vertical surfaces. I cleaned both surfaces with lacquer thinner before installing. The control box was dangling by the wire harness by the time I finished the install. Obviously, I'll have to find another way to mount it. 540319

This really is a plug and go kit. Install was pretty straight forward and easy. A couple faults that I found during install: 1. Double sided tape held the converter block up for only a few minutes. I installed the tape onto the converter prior to starting the install. The tape stuck securely to my vehicle and i can’t get it off, but the block let loose before the complete install was done. 2. The crimp connections are not weather proof, I added some shrink tubing to make the connections water tight. Other than those two minor complaints it’s a very easy to use and install system. 752665

In order to do this you would need butt connectors, part # DW05744-5 and part # DW05745-5. That said, if you have a faulty trailer wiring harness that is outside of the warranty period...

  • Does the Computer Have to be Flashed on a 2012 Chrysler Town and Country to Install Trailer Wiring
Both wiring harnesses for the 2012 Chrysler Town and Country, see link, are T-connectors but also need power from the vehicle battery in order to power the trailer lights. The T-connections provide the signals that tell the converter what to do. This method protects the electrical system on your van. Because these harnesses require a battery connection, you will need to disconnect the negative cable when wiring in the harness. Having the battery disconnected will essentially re-set the...

  • Trailer Wiring Harness for a 2012 Chrysler Town and Country
Manufacturers have determined that the 2012 Chrysler Town and Country requires a powered wiring harness. this is because the vehicle's sensitive wiring is not designed to handle the additional power draw of trailer lights. A powered harness gets power for the trailer lights from the vehicle battery to further protect the vehicle from overdraw and from shorts from the trailer wiring. I recommend wiring harness # 118534 which works well with the Chrysler Town and Country. I have linked...

  • Wiring Harness Keeps Blowing Fuse Inside Vehicle
It sounds like something is causing a short circuit in the wiring of the Curt harness you mentioned in your question. I recommend checking all of the connections the harness is making to your vehicle to see if there is anything out of place that may be causing a short. Look for damaged or frayed wires, any wires that are touching bare metal or two wires that are touching each other, wires attached to the wrong location or any corrosion along the wiring. Any of these things can potentially...

  • Wiring to Passenger Side Too Short on Curt Trailer Wiring Harness for 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan
This issue is not uncommon and it is not just Curt that has this issue. The trick is to use the most direct path possible when routing the wiring from the driver side to the passenger side. But they do not explain what that best route is. What a lot of people end up doing is splicing in some extra wire because finding the best route that does not require extra wire is too time consuming. When we installed Curt harness # C56331 on a 2014 Town and Country we had just enough wire to reach...

  • Running Light Voltage is Good Going in But Not Coming Out of Trailer Wiring Harness C56150
Since the voltage is correct going into the converter box but not correct coming out, that indicates that there is something wrong inside the converter for wiring harness # C56331. There is no fix for this and the whole harness will need to be replaced. The Curt wiring harness has a limited one year warranty. I have included a link to our help article that you can view on testing 4-Way trailer wiring harnesses as well.

  • Curt Trailer Wiring Harness for 2014 Chrysler Town & Country has No Power
Check the fuse for the power wire in wiring harness # C56331 for your 2014 Chrysler Town and Country. If that fuse is blown or missing that would be why the harness is not working. Also make sure the white ground wire is attached to a bare metal surface; no paint or coating between the ground and where it is connected. If that does not do the trick then you can test the converter to determine if it is bad. I have included a link to a video that shows how to do this.

  • Fuse for Curt Harness C56331 On a 2013 Town and Country Keeps Blowing
The cause of your blown fuse is most likely a wiring issue. The power wire that leads from the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness part # C56331 to the vehicle's battery will need to be inspected. If you like, you can just replace this wire with part # 10-1-1. This would be the main cause of the in-line fuse blowing but it could also be attributed to a short on another circuit as well so it will be best to check all of the wiring that relates to the trailer lights on both the vehicle...

  • 2014 Chrysler Town and Country Tail Lights Stay Lit with Curt Trailer Wiring Harness Installed
The vehicle tail lights should not be lighting up with trailer wiring harness # C56331 installed on a 2014 Chrysler Town and Country. That indicates that there is a short or power is somehow back feeding through the converter. I recommend replacing the wiring harness with # 118534 since we hear about less issues with the Tekonsha/Tow Ready wiring harnesses. I have linked a video showing how it installs for you.

  • 2011 Chrysler Town and Country Towing a Trailer with Working Turn Signals and No Brake Lights
The converter box (black) in the trailer wiring harness # C56331 takes the separate brake and turn signals on the vehicle and combines them to a combined signal that is used by the trailer. The converter box or logic box contains circuitry designed to distinguish between the brake and turn signals and combine them to a single circuit on the output side. Since the turn signals are working on the trailer but the brake lights are not, this is normally a bad ground. The brake lights will...

  • Wiring Harness Recommendation for a 2012 Chrysler Town and Country With LED Lights
I spoke with my contact at Curt and the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness, # C56331, is exactly what you will need for your 2012 Chrysler Town and Country with LED lights. This wiring harness will not draw the power directly from the vehicle wires, but intercepts those signals and sends them to the converter box which uses power from the vehicle battery to send the signals to the 4-pole trailer connector to power the lights on the trailer.

  • Adding a 7-Way Trailer Connector and Brake Controller to a 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan
Yes, I can help you to set up your 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan to be compatible with trailers that have electric brakes. First, you will need to install a 4-Way trailer connector on the van using # C56331 or # 118534. If the van has the turn signals and brake lights on different circuits then you will have to use # 118534. Once you have the 4-Way installed you will need # ETBC7 to add a 7-Way connector and the wiring for a brake controller. I have included some links that show and explain...
