Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - C56330 Review

Today, we're gonna take a look at the Curt T-connector vehicle wiring harness with the four way flat trailer connector. Now this is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 2011 and newer Dodge Journeys with LED taillights. On a custom fit part, I always like to recommend for you to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle and it'll show if this part will work for your application. Now this harness provides this four way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer's signal lights. It is compatible with five pole, six pole, and seven pole adapters that we sell separately on our website.

This does connect very quickly and easily. Basically, you just locate your connection points, which are behind the taillights. Plug in your T-connectors. You have two connectors here that you'll plug in on the driver's side, one T-connector that you'll plug in on the passenger side, ground white wire to a good clean ground, and then run this black wire, which is your power wire to your vehicle's battery. Now this does include a taillight converter, which is this black box here and this is to ensure that your vehicle's wiring will match that of your trailer. This is a power module, so it connects directly to the vehicle's battery to avoid overloading your vehicle's electrical system.

Now this converter is constructed using SMT, which is surface mount technology, gives you a consistent, reliable performance. It'll maximize trailer light yield and intensity while producing minimal heat. It ensures superior operation in any rough road conditions. Now the four way itself, you'll notice, comes with this integrated dust cover that'll fit on the four way when you're not plugged into your trailer. Pops right over there, protects those terminals from any damage or from the elements.

This harness is made in the USA. A few specs on it. The maximum amperage on the stop and turn light circuits is three amps per circuit. On the taillights it's six amps total. Now, it does come with everything shown here on the table, had a very nice set of detailed instructions that'll describe how to install it.

It even shows you pictures of your connection points. But just quickly, how this would install, again, you go to the rear of the vehicle behind your taillights. Start on the driver's side and you'll take these two connectors. There's the T-connector with the yellow wire and then the T-connector with the red wire. These will plug into matching connectors on your driver's side. Then you'll have your white wire with the island on it. You just connect that to a good clean ground if there's one nearby. If not, you can drill a hole and use your grounding screw that's included. Then you'll take the green length of wire and that'll run all the way over to your passenger side. Plug this into the matching connector on the passenger side. Once those are all connected, your converter box, you want to attach that to a good flat surface so it doesn't bounce around. So they include this piece of double face tape that you can use to attach it down or you can even use this long cable tie to attach it down that way. Then you'll run this length of bonded wire out the back with the four way that plugs into the trailer. Your last connection is this black wire. This is your power wire. This would need to run to your vehicle's battery. So to help you do that, they give you a length of wire and you'll run that to the front of the vehicle. They give you the connectors. Put the butt connectors on. Connect it to one end of this length of wire. Run your wire all the way up to the front and before you connect this to the battery, you don't want to run it directly to the battery. You want to run it through this inline fuse hole there. So take the other butt connector, collect it to one side of the fuse holder just like that. Then your other side of the fuse holder, you'll put this eyelet on there. That's what'll connect to your vehicle's battery. Once that's all connected, pop open your fuse holder, take your included 10 amp fuse. Put it into the fuse holder. Put your cap right on there to protect it. Your system will be all ready to go and, again, they give you some extra cable ties to take up any slack in the wiring. But that should do it for the review on Curt T-connector vehicle wiring harness with the four way flat trailer connector.

This wire harness was easy to install. Just unplug the taillights and plug in the harness. It saved a lot of time by not having to figure out which wire goes where. No splicing and all the connectors are high quality. It saved me time and most of all money. 763538

I was really disappointed with the adhesive on the back of the controller. I even washed the area 4 times where I intended to place it and waited long enough for it to dry. Just to say it was very clean and there was no reason for it to fall off when I took my vacation pulling my camper. Glad I had gorilla tape on hand. Had to take time out of my commute to reach up and tape the controller onto the body of my Dodge Journey. 1 year later and it has not fallen off. I was also disappointed in the installation videos recommending that I fix the wire for the 4-way connector by using plastic tie wraps. Looked a bit gaudy when I was done. There should have been a better recommendation. 642700

Only two things I would suggest to improve this item, more zip ties (cost about $0.12), and better splices (costs about $0.13). If this kit had better splices and a few more zip ties it would be sheer perfection! As it is it is still awesome! I bought the and harness, Put it on my 8 day old car that Dodge wanted $395 to add a tow package on for less than half the price. WAY better this way!!! Costs less money and took me about an hour TOTAL INSTALL TIME for both the hitch AND the harness!!! Love etrailer.com, so far everything has been spot on!! Only thing left is to buy the 4-pin to 7-pin adapter that hard mounts to my hitch and all is done! I love how they showed my exact vehicle install on video. Makes EVERYTHING easier! Makes deterring what to buy a no brainer. Made my first hitch install look like I was a pro! It's like having a GPS unit, makes you an instant expert on getting where you are going. 435214

This t-harness is the way to go! Do yourself a favor and buy heat shrink butt connectors, wire loom, and good double sided tape. I’m a mechanic so I’m a little picky and have the box mounted inside the vehicle behind the interior panels. Even with the box mounted inside, my green wire is long enough. Ive included a picture of the routing I’ve chosen for my wires to keep away from the exhaust, up and away from road debris, and also give you PLENTY of wire to reach the passenger side. The picture is of under the drivers side tail light. Run your wire above the bumper support and back of spare tire. It’s a little bit of fishing to do this but the overall routing length is shorter, giving you enough wire to reach the passenger side. I’d recommend wire loom on the entire wire to prevent rubbing as there are some sharp edges. 791295

I am a DIY kinda Guy and I found the detailed videos an excellent study guide for how to, along with tips and tricks to make it easier. I haul three different trailers and each has been pulled using the tow bar and wire harness purchased from etrailer with great satisfaction. When I purchased my Dodge Journey from a Dodge dealer, they wanted $2000.00 to install a Curt Hitch, I did it for much less with etrailer and still had money left to actually go on the vacation instead of putting it into the same exact hitch package I bought right here. As I said I'm a DIYer and I will take all the free advice and help I can get. etrailer helped me to Get R done... 629820

The harness was easy to install and works great. The only problem I had with it is the harness that goes from the left tail light to the right is too short. It needs to be about 6 inches longer. This harness definitely made installation easy and at a great price. 565636

My vehicle wiring for my trailer went out and a local dealer was ordering a new one. He ordered the wrong one. Then he said it would take a week to get the right one...enter etrailer.com. They had the part I needed and I was able to get it delivered the next day (less than 20 hours). The part was easy to install and took only 20 minutes. This saved my trip to Canada. The price was reasonable, the videos were helpful, and their service allowed me to have a safe fishing trip! I will definitely use them again if needed and refer others to their site. Keep up the great work and God Bless. 559904

Dodge Journey SXT Curt 56330 wiring for LED tail lights. Everything you need is included. Nice kit. The reviews were right, the green wire for the passenger side is about 4 inches short. I would think that Curt would remedy this or and least give the following instruction. Remove the green wire from the white notice wrapped around the wire bundle coming out of the power module. This will you the few extra inches you need. I see that the notice has been removed from the wires in the review of the wiring kit. I don’t have a vehicle lift, so the running of the power wire to the battery took a bit of time. I found that lifting the drivers side of the Journey about a foot and removing the tires let me find a path for the wire to follow. Would have been 5 stars if the green wire was loose so that it would be long enough to start with. 466071

  • Troubleshooting Left Rear Trailer Light That Glows with Vehicle Turned Off
It sounds like there may have been a short on your trailer that caused the converter box of Curt Wiring Harness part # C56330 to short out and now there is a low amount of voltage on your left rear tail light. We see this problem a lot, and actually the # C56330 did its job and protected your vehicle wiring. They are designed to act like a fuse between your trailer wiring and vehicle wiring so that you do not damage your vehicle wiring. You can further test the converter box by testing...

  • Where to Access 12V Power for Installing Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness C56330
Powered 4-pole harnesses like the Curt # C56330 are designed for a direct 12V connection to the vehicle battery in order to isolate the car's own internal wiring from any potential fault conditions on the trailer. Although it seems simple and is tempting to consider using the auxiliary 12V power outlet in a car, those outlets usually cannot deliver the same amount of current that a direct battery connection can. Alternate installation would likely void the warranty. Vehicles like your...

The Curt T-Connector, part # C56330 is a fit for your 2013 Dodge Journey with LED lamps. I have confirmed this with Curt. Tekonsha also offers a similar wiring harness, part # 118536. The Tekonsha connector is rated for a higher amperage than the Curt model, and is a bit higher rated by our customers. Because of this, I'd personally choose the Tekonsha connector over the Curt model. Both these connectors will plug inline with the factory wiring harnesses, and would require no cutting...

  • Adding a 7-Way Trailer Connector and Brake Controller to a 2011 Dodge Journey with Tow Package
Since your 2011 Dodge Journey already has a 4-Way flat trailer connector all you will need to add a brake controller is the brake controller itself and an installation kit that includes a 7-Way trailer connector. There isn't a plug and play type of harness for the 2011 Dodge Journey because the vehicle isn't set up for it even if it has the factory tow package. This means there is a little hardwiring required. For a brake controller I recommend the P2, # 90885, because it's easy to...

Tekonsha has also been around longer, for these reasons I would give their product the edge. I have linked you to the installation details for both the Tow Ready and the Curt harness.
