Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - C56329 Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're gonna be taking a look at a Curt T-connector vehicle wiring harness with a four pole flat trailer connector. This product fits certain years and models of the Ford Edge, Ford Escape, Lincoln MKX, Mercury Mariner, and Mazda Tribute. To ensure that this is a fit for your vehicle, you can use the vehicle fit guide located at etrailer.com. Now this unit provides a four way flat connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer's signal lights. It is compatible with five pole, six pole, and seven pole adapters. Adapters are sold separately and it comes with a dust cap for the four way flat connector.

That way, you can cover up the connection points when your plug isn't being used. The black box is the included power taillight converter. This connects directly to the vehicle battery through the wiring to avoid overloading your vehicle's electrical system. That's constructed using surface mount technology for consistent, reliable performance, maximizes trailer light yield and intensity while producing minimal heat, and ensures superior operation in rough road conditions. Now this unit is designed to connect quickly and easily. All you need to do is locate your connection points behind your taillights.

One of the connectors goes to the driver's side. The other one goes to the passenger's side of the vehicle. Now these connectors are custom fit. They're vehicle specific. They're gonna match up perfectly with the ports on the vehicle and they're gonna snap lock together.

Once you have those plugged in, you'll need to make a ground connection. That's your white wire with a ring terminal attached to it. You want to get that grounded to a suitable grounding location with the included grounding screw. Then you'll need to mount your converter box to a safe, out-of-the-way location and you can do that using the included double sided adhesive foam tape. Next, you'll need to run the hot lead to the vehicle battery.

The hot lead is the short black wire coming out of the box. This gets connected to one end of the bundle of wiring with one of the included butt connectors. The other end of the bundle goes to the vehicle battery, gets another butt connector attached to it and connects to one half of the fuse holder. The other half of the fuse holder gets ring terminal attached to it and connects to the positive post of the vehicle battery. It does come with your 15 amp fuse, goes directly in the fuse holder and it's got the cap that goes over to keep it safe and protected. Once you have that done, you can secure any excess or slack in your wiring with the included cable ties. Once your installation's complete, the four way connector's gonna be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your rear cargo area. Plenty of wire in here. That way, you can extend it out the back when you need to use it. Roll it up and tuck it away when you don't. It is recommended that you use a small amount of dielectric grease on all your electrical connections, like the plugs on the vehicle, on the four pole connector itself. That grease is specifically designed to help prevent corrosion to the connection points. It is sold separately and available at etrailer.com. When it comes to the maximum amperage for the stop and turn lights, we're looking at three amps per circuit. For the taillights, we're looking at six amps per circuit. That's gonna do it for today's look at the Curt T-connector vehicle wiring harness with a four pole flat trailer connector.

Harness fit good and was easy to install. Only four stars because the video had stated the connectors were upgraded to heat shrink connectors but my connectors were not. I did have some of my own so I swapped them out. 540577

Comments

This kit included standard butt connectors, but as referenced at about 4:10 in the video the connectors were upgraded to part # DW05745-10
Deka Heat Shrink Butt Connector - 12-10 Gauge - Nylon Insulation - Yellow - Qty 10
$9.16
. A link to those upgraded heat shrink connectors can be found here.

Ask the Experts about this Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring
Do you have a question about this Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring?

  • Battery Dies After Installing the Curt Powered Wiring Harness on a 2008 Ford Escape
  • There are a few things that could cause your battery to drain after installing a trailer wiring harness like the Curt T-Connector, # C56329. The first thing that we can test for is a bad converter box. With the fuse in place, test the 4-flat connector on the wiring harness without any vehicle lights on using a circuit tester with an incandescent bulb like part # 40376. Be sure to test each pin. If there is constant power on any of the pins with the vehicle lights off, then the converter...

  • Why Does the Curt Powered Taillight Converter Have a Wire that Runs to the Battery
  • The reason the Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring # C56329 has a power wire is to protect the delicate tail light wiring circuits of your vehicle from being overloaded. The Curt Trailer Harness # C56329 that you referenced uses your tail light circuits as signal wires and then draws the power to illuminate the tail lights of your trailer directly from your vehicle battery through the battery wire of the box. I attached installation instructions, an installation video and an FAQ on routing...

  • Troubleshooting an LED Trailer Light Staying On When Vehicle is Turned Off
  • This can occur with some Curt wiring harnesses. On a trailer with LED lights the lights may be dimly lit when the vehicle is off because the harness has a direct connection to the battery and there is some power to the 4-Way all the time. If the lights are coming on as bright as normal the first thing I would check would be the 4-way trailer connector that is on your both of your vehicles. It sounds like the problem is in your trailer, but it is still a good idea to rule out the vehicles...

The act of towing the trailer causes some movement and the ground connection changes slightly to where it was working when you had stopped. What you will want to do is make sure the main ground on the converter on the vehicle is connected to a clean bare metal surface. • Curt Trailer Wiring Harness C56329 Blown Fuse and Will Not Work After Replacing Fuse
  • The likely problem is a blown converter box. If there was short circuit on the trailer side that was bad enough it could blow the fuse on the power wire and/or the converter box. If this happens the converter did its job of protecting the vehicle. Since a new fuse as not resurrected the converter it will need to be replaced. However, before you do so you will want to take care of the short circuit. Start by checking the trailer side connector, making sure it is clean and free of corrosion....

  • We will need to determine where the problem is. To do this you will need a circuit tester such as # ALL640595. Test the vehicle side connector with the circuit tester while someone sits in the 2010 Ford Escape and activates the lighting functions (turn signals, brake lights, and running lights) while you test the connector. If there is no power on the 4-Way when performing the test then perform the same test only this time test the wires going into the converter from the Escape (instead...

  • Troubleshooting Hyper Flash on 2010 Ford Escape with LED Lights

Tekonsha has been in the wiring business longer, they have great support, and they work well if you take care of them (make sure to keep the 4-Way clean, store it in the vehicle when not in use, stay within the amperage limits).
