Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

2012 Chevrolet Volt

The wiring harness came with everything I needed for the installation. The hardest part of the installation was running the 12 volt power wire from the rear of the car to the engine compartment. I purchased the optional weather-proof connector wit the heat shrink tubing. This ensures a good waterproof connection for the wiring. The only minor complaint that I have is that I don't like the dangling trailer electrical plug-in. It would be nicer if the plug-in could have been mounted to the bottom of the bumper. 644077

Comments
This trailer wiring harness has functioned flawlessly and is holding up to frequent use quite well. However, I still think that the connection point for the trailer plug in should have a bracket or clip to firmly attach to the rear bumper of the vehicle.

This order arrived quickly. It is extremely easy to put together with basic hand tools. The wires and plugs are made of good quality. I recommend buying heat shrink connectors instead of using the ones provided (more weather proof). You may need/want some extra zip ties. All in all I would buy it again. 777862

2010 Ford Escape

This was my second trailer wiring kit for my 2010 Ford Escape. The first one stopped working correctly after about 4 years due to somehow the little module that was mounted with double sided tape behind the tail light came loose and was dangling down where it was exposed to the elements. The second unit was mounted with a screw and worked like a charm. The only minor difficulty is running the power wiring up to the battery in a manner that it is protected and out of the way. Other than that, easy fast installation in one evening. I’ve since traded that vehicle so I can only assume it’s still working. 723422

Very satisfied with the product. The package arrived a little beat up with a significant gash in the side of the box, but the hitch was undamaged and all parts were intact. The hitch installed easily, everything fit as needed, though why the need for a spaced between the hitch and the frame on the passenger side really doesn't make sense, it looks like a fix for a hitch with incorrect mounting hole locations. And that did make the installation a little more difficult, but manageable. The wiring harness also installed easily, everything needed was there and everything worked as it should. I'm quite satisfied. 680881

Ask the Experts about this Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring

  • Replacement Trailer Wiring Harness Recommendation for 2011 Ford Escape
You have adequately troubleshooted your trailer wiring harness to know that it is damaged and in need of replacing. Since the Curt converter boxes are known for shorting out easier I'd recommend you replace it with the part # 118551 which has a reputation as being more reliable. We don't have just the converter box available separately though.

  • Trailer Wiring Harness Troubleshooting for a 2009 Ford Escape
Usually in situations where the wiring harness/converter has gone bad it is just due to a short from the trailer or a bad converter. But when it happens this often and with more than one brand, something else is going on. First, we need to make sure you are getting the correct harnesses. Both the CURT harness, # C56329, and the Tow Ready, # 118430, are designed for the 2009 Ford Escape WITHOUT tow package. If your Escape has a tow package, you would need # 118251. • Troubleshooting an LED Trailer Light Staying On When Vehicle is Turned Off
This can occur with some Curt wiring harnesses. On a trailer with LED lights the lights may be dimly lit when the vehicle is off because the harness has a direct connection to the battery and there is some power to the 4-Way all the time.
