Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Easy to install, I like how it isolates the electrical system and it works great. Your video instructions were outstanding. With the video a five year old could install the wiring. This was installed in my 2019 Kia Sorento. The first pix shows in the back very low profile, the second pix shows inside the engine compartment, truly cool.

Comments
Ive had no issues at all. Works great. I did bottom-out once but it was my fault, deep ravine. The hitch seems to stabilize my rear end somewhat. Dont know if its good or bad. Forgot to mention, your wiring harness is super cool and easy to install.

The Curt wiring harness for my 2018 Kia Sorento works well. I gave it 4 stars since the instructions that came in the Curt package were somewhat confusing and didn't fully apply to my 2018 Sorento. However as long as you follow the installation instructions in the excellent etrailer video which are spot on you'll be fine. One thing I did do was to switch to a better grade of double sided tape to attach the controller. Just personal preference.

Definitely watch the videos before attempting this. You have plenty of wire to make the run to the battery, but the video gives a few pointers that helped a lot. Great quality connectors. It’s been a year and have put many miles on this kit.

This is the second trailer wiring harness that I have installed on a Kia Sorento. The first was on my 2012 Sorento. This one is on my 2014 Sorento. Having used the online video installation instructions the first time around and having no problems, I went straight to the video for my 2014 Sorento. The Curt T-Connector kit makes wiring easy. No splicing, just plug in the matching connectors, mount the power converter and run a few wires for a ground and forward to your battery. Hiding the wires behind the hitch as per the instructions with cable ties gives a clean look. I also mounted a Curt plug receptacle to the hitch so that the connector is not just hanging on the safety chain holes. As you can see from the photo I believe this gives a clean , professional look.

Just received yesterday along with the Drawtite hitch- arrived within days of my ordering. Not installed yet, however appears to be precisely what is needed for my Kia Sorento. The ordering process BTW- determining the correct harness for my vehicle was quick and easy. I did some shopping around. I wanted to deal directly with a company (as opposed to giving my business to one of the BIG on-line sellers) and very glad I did. etrailer.com has already demonstrated excellent customer service both before and after the sale. BONUS: They had the best price too! :->

Works well and was pretty easy to install. Although part of the reason it was easy to install was that I didn't have to run a wire all the way from the back of the car to the battery. And there is the problem. As I found out after I ordered this T-connector, all 2016 Kia Sorentos with a V6 or a Turbo, come with a trailer prep package from the factory. That includes additional wiring at the back to install trailer light without taking out the taillights. Much easier. Your website doesn't recognize this, or even ask the question about what model you have and insists that the correct harness does not work with the my Sorento. It would have saved me a lot of time and swearing.

The hitch and harness arrived 3 days before scheduled date and packed very well. Some minor rubbing on the tube, no big deal, I have paint. Dealer etrailer. Won’t install for another month, that review will follow then.

The trailer receiver was an easy installation, installing the wiring kit in a Kia Sorento was a pain. We have been using the package for one year with no problems. Yes, I would order from Etrailer again. My order was shipped promptly and arrived in good condition it was excactly as described.

2020 Kia Sorento

I ordered the wiring harness for a 2020 Kia Sorento without factory tow package. The kit contained everything I needed, but the instructions included were for a very different model of Sorento. None of steps 1-6 was necessary, and I wasted a lot of time following them before figuring out that I didn't need them. Further down the list, step 10 was also unnecessary -- there's a hole in the bottom of each taillight compartment that you can thread the harness through, so there's no need to cut and redo any grommets. The videos referred to on your website were very useful, however.

With the help of the etrailer install video, the installation of this product was relatively easy. One thing that I usually do with wiring harnesses is to first wrap them with quality electrical tape to provide additional abrasion resistance. Also make sure to use enough wire ties to secure the harness and keep it from being too loose in places. I gave the product a 4 star review because the double stick tape for the module is not very tacky and losses adhesion quick. I had to find another method to keep it secure. Otherwise the harness works for the purpose as designed and I am satisfied.

No issues with the harness as I was smart enough to have it installed by a professional.

I bought a trailer hitch and wiring for a 2016 Kia Sorento last year. As with my other purchases from etrailer, installation was easy. I really like the videos. The vehicle was not originally wired for a trailer, and I needed the video to figure out where the battery line had to run.

Nicole T was a great saver of Get to g my vehicle ready to pull my trailer. The wiring harness I purchased thru a different supplier failed to ask a crucial vehicle option. It caused the wrong wiring harness to be purchased. I contacted Curt directly and Nicole T was on the job with her "A" game. She asked the right questions, allowing me to select the correct wiring harness. She arranged shipping to ensure I receive it as early as possible, the next day. Installation was quick & easy. Thank you Nicole T.

Great, it has lived up to my expectations. Again, without Nicole T knowledge of your products & ability to ask the required information, I would have had to postpone my trip & spend additional money. Thank you again Nicole T & Curt.

The second install - a "Upgraded" system worked great. It was a plug 'n play so I didn't have to splice, solder and tape wires. Your video and printed instructions were very clear and spot on. Screwed the flat 4-pole mounting bracket to the hitch frame and used JB Weld to bond the flat connector to the mounting bracket. thanx, bill

Extremely helpful video on etrailer website convenienced me to purchase this wiring harness for my 2018 Kia Sorento. Every bit as easy as pie! A well engineered harness with plenty of length on the wiring and all the plugs matched. You may need additional black zip ties on hand if you’re picky like me.

Wiring was a bit challenging without a lift, but the snap together connectors made it work pretty darn well. Packaged instructions are not so good. Youtube has etrailer videos that are very good. All in all I am pleased with the kit now that the job is done and works as it should.

2014 Kia Sorento

The f/irst unit did not work properly for the passenger side, replacement worked perfectly. 2014 Kia Sorento i4. The instructions and the video were both very incorrect for this vehicle. The installation for the power cable is the only thing you have to follow and the video shows where I ran the cable, before I viewed the video. This unit can be installed by removing the 2 tail lights if the power cable is already ran, otherwise you only have to remove 5 plastic screw plugs to remove the cover underneath the driver side of the vehicle to run the wires. Much easier if you put the rear on ramps or jack it up. The unit plugs into the drivers tail light and all of the other cables, after the black power cable is connected and you screw in the ground cable, simply drop down and you can reach them from the bottom, even with large hands. You can shine a light underneath the vehicle if you are in a poorly lit area and can look down the tail light holes to see the opening where you will reach in and pull the wires out underneath the vehicle. It is easier with the cover removed, but I did not need to do that for the re-install nor did I do it at all for the passenger side either time. I did not have to remove any of the interior, nor mess with the grommet behind the driver side interior panel. I do not have any idea, even after repeatedly viewing the video (which is much more informative for a non-mechanic than the instructions) and re-reading the instructions. Also note, this kit is plug-n-play. No blue splicing connectors like the video shows on the same page. You unplug the tail light from the car, plug the controller in (don't unwrap the driver side wires either) to the car and the other end into the tail light. This is how simple it is. Took me 1 hour to install it the first time and 45 minutes to run the power cable because I had to figure out a safe route, which turned out to be along the round wheel panel an then the same path the video shows going forward to the battery. It took about 5 minutes to do the re-install now that I knew nothing had to be removed from the vehicle except for the 2 tail lights. 5 stars for simple installation. Wish the instructions were made for someone who has never done an install before and again I have no idea what they wanted to run through the grommet. I suppose maybe they want the passenger green wire ran inside the car instead of across the hitch??? I was not able to make out what the instructions wanted- too vague. The video is not for this kit and lacked the grommet area along with how to begin the black power cable – only shows from the front of the rear wheel to the battery and has no specific instructions on how to route it. Oh, it also tells to disconnect the existing cables, if any, going through the grommet and to be careful not to break the plastic tabs on the connector. I was not able to figure out how to unplug the connector, but luckily none of that that was needed. If it is needed, I was not able to make out what they wanted me to do with the grommet section. In case it helps, I would do it this way: 1) Remove the 2 taillights and place them in a safe place. 2) Connect the black power cable, run it to the battery, leaving about a foot sticking out of the tail light hole. Ensure you can always get to the but connector in the future. 3) Watch the video and ensure the ground wire and screw are EXACTLY where they tell you in the video. You must screw through 2 layers of metal and be in the area where the tail light will go back in place all of the way. 4) Do not unwrap the drive side wiring. Unwrap the other cables and drop them down the hole, reach in the whole, or remove the cover, and pull the wires underneath the vehicle. 5) Stick the unit to the same place the video shows. 6) Plug in the driver side taillight and screw it back to the vehicle. 7) Run the green wire to the passenger side. Use a pull wire or bungy cord down the hole and pull up the green wire. Connect it to the tail light and screw the light back on the vehicle. 8) The video shows large wire ties for the wiring, but there is only ONE, use it for the green wire and the 4 connector as the video shows.

2016 Kia Sorento

I purchased the Curt Mfg No. C56256 Trailer Hitch Wiring Harness after an unsuccessful attempt to get a different Wiring Harness to work on my 2016 Kia Sorento. Bottom Line - the Curt Manufacturing Trailer Lights Circuits Design with Trailer Lights Power accessed DIRECTLY from a separate FUSED Power Line to the Battery worked well. The Trailer Lights Operational Control Signal taps into the Vehicle Tail Light connectors, this bypasses the 2 Kia Tow Lights Hookup connectors. Attempts with the first Trailer Wiring Harness could not resolve the problem. I solved it thru 2 activities… First, by Online Research at eTrailer.com & discussion with eTrailer Technical Service Persons, including review of eTrailer Installation Videos, and Secondly, I confirmed their advice thru discussions with 3 local Trailer Hitch Installation & Service Professionals. After eTrailer purchase of the Curt Wiring Harness, I confirmed the solution & technical specification issues DIRECTLY with Curt Mfg thru their Telephone Technical Support. Outstanding Technical Support Service by both eTrailer & Curt Mfg. I installed the Curt Mfg Wiring Harness on my new 2016 Kia Vehicle. Tail Light Signal connector installations went well (at the Vehicle Tail Lights, slightly different than eTrailer Videos - new Vehicle Designs for Tail Lights). Battery Power Line installation & Fuse at the Battery went well per eTrailer videos. Trailer Lights Power Plug function was verified per Curt instructions with the Product Kit. FINAL TEST SUCCESSFUL - 250 mile on the road “Trailer Lights test”, including about 30 miles in the RAIN. Outstanding Technical Support Service both by eTrailer & Curt Mfg. - THANK YOU.

Simple to install only thing I didn't use that was sent was the butt connectors. Personally don't like that style . Small issue with preference is all. Looks like it was factory done and not after like other wireing harness that I have seen or used.

Comments
Have had one issue with it in a year. My right rear marker light will stay on if I leave the in line fuse in when no trailer is connected. Simple enough fix I dont pull a trailer that much so I just pull the fuse when Im not using it. Not sure if its auto manufacturer issue or trailer wiring issue but eh not that hard to overcome
Roger B - 02/19/2019

Sounds like this wiring harness has a bad modulite if there is still a signal on while the trailer it not connected. If your current solution of pulling the fuse becomes an issue I would recommend removing this wiring harness and replacing it with the # 118269

For your 2016 Kia Sorento, I recommend the Curt Class III hitch # C13195, over the Draw-Tite Hitch # 75908. I recommend the Curt hitch receiver because the tongue weight is so much stronger at 750 pounds versus the 500 lb rating of the Draw-Tite. The reason I think people may lean toward the Draw-Tite for your vehicle is the installation is slightly easier saving between 10 and 20 minutes. Some people also don't like that Curt recommends that you use a stabilization strap, # 18050,...

  • Which Vehicle Wiring Harness Fits A 2021 Kia Sorento SX Without The Factory Tow Package?
For your 2021 Kia Sorento SX without the factory tow package you will need the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # TK26FR which is confirmed to fit all models of the Sorento including your SX model. At this time (6/15/2021) this is the only plug in adapter that will not require any splicing into your factory wiring. The Curt # C59236 will also work but requires you to splice into your factory wiring. I included a link to the written instructions of...

  • Brake Control and Wiring for 7-Way on 2019 Kia Sorento Pulling Travel Trailer
For the wiring your 2019 Kia Sorento 3.3 L V6 FWD I always recommend doing it all at the same time. The Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat # C56256 plugs into your taillights but will require a constant power source be ran to the battery. It makes the most sense to run with all the wiring for the 7-way and brake controller so you have everything in the same place. The Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV # ETBC7 will give you the other wiring required...

  • Installing Trailer Wiring and Hitch Recommendation for a 2016 Kia Sorento 2.5L LX
The process for installing trailer wiring harness # C56256 on your 2016 Kia Sorento will be the same as the video linked for the 2015. Vehicles come in generations and the custom fit items usually fit all models in that generation which is why you can go by the 2015 video. You cannot attach the power wire on the harness to that 12 volt outlet power wire. First, installing the harness in any other way than what's stated in the installation instructions would void your warranty protection. Secondly,...

  • Will Vehicle Tail Lights Work If Fuse On Vehicle Trailer Wiring Harness Is Removed?
I looked up your order and the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56256 for your 2018 Kia Sorento will not work if you pull the in-line fuse for your trailer lights, but your vehicle lights and tail lights will not be impacted.

  • Troubleshooting T-Connector Wiring Harness Installation On 2015 Kia Sorento
When installing a T-connector like part # C56256 and getting no signal to some of the wiring, the problem is the ground. Make sure the ground is attached to a clean bare metal surface and then recheck the lights. You can make sure you are getting current to the trailer plug by using a circuit tester like part # 40376. Have someone sit in the driver seat of your Sorento and run through the functions while you test the pins. Make sure all of the connectors are securely attached and...

  • Best Trailer Hitch for a 2020 Kia Sorento
The best trailer hitch for a 2020 Kia Sorento is the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver part # e98843 because unlike the other options for this vehicle it has a dull finish which we have found to not stand out nearly as much as the other glossier options. I know this may not seem like much but it really helps retains a factory like appearance as the shiny finishes tend to draw your eyes in which makes you see the trailer hitch first when looking at the rear of the vehicle. The etrailer Trailer...

  • How to Tell if 2020 Kia Sorento Has Factory Tow Package
If your 2020 Kia Sorento has the factory tow package, there will be a tail light wiring connector behind the rear tire of the driver side, on the outside of the frame rail. As shown in the attached photos, an underbody cover will need to be removed to gain access to the factory tow ports. If you click on the installation video link provided for the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package # C56332, you can get a clear idea of how to remove the cover and locate the...

The correct trailer hitch fit for a 2019 Kia Sorento EX AWD is the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver part # e98843 which features a simple bolt-on installation. Then for trailer wiring, I recommend the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # C56332 for models with the tow package or part # C56256 for those without.

  • Is Trailer Hitch Rated for Weight Distribution Available for 2017 Kia Sorento?
There are two hitches that are a fit for your 2017 Kia Sorento though neither the Draw-Tite # 75908 or Curt # C13195 are rated for use with a weight distribution (load-leveling) system so you would be unable to use this to tow your 3,000 lb camper. I looked up your '17 Sorento's owner's manual and it does state that the maximum towing capacity for this vehicle is 3,500 lbs (for the Theta II 2.0/2.4 engine) or 5,000 lbs (for the Lambda II 3.3 engine) only if you have the trailer towing...
