Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2016 Kia Soul

Today on our 2016 KIA Soul we're going to be taking a look at, and installing, the Curt T connector wiring harness with four pull flat trailer connector, part number C56222. Here's what it looks like once it's installed on the vehicle. As you can see, on this one we've got it mounted to a four pull bracket and a universal long bracket here just to help make it easy to access when necessary. What this does is allows you to have a location to plug your four fold trailer wiring into so that you can operate the lights on your trailer. It features a module box which helps to ensure that there's no electrical back feed into the vehicles electrical system to help protect the vehicle. Something that's nice about this wiring harness is that it doesn't have a power wire that you have to route all the way to the front and up to the battery as with some of these other trailer wiring harnesses. An issue that some people have run into when installing this wiring harness is having enough green wire to go from the drivers side tail light across to the passenger side tail light, but within the install video to follow we'll show you how we routed it in order to not have to add any wire.

Here we've got everything that comes with the kit. We've got our wiring harness with our module, and out t connectors that go out to the driver and passenger side, a ground wire that comes off our module here, and our four pull wiring. It also comes with this little dust cover for the four pull connector. Then in this bag we've got some zip ties and other hardware that we're going to need to install this. First thing we'll need to do is remove both of our tail lights, and in order to do that they each have four screws that we can remove with a Philips head screwdriver. Once we've got those screws out we can take it and pry gently outward there until we can get a little bit of a lip to pull from behind and slowly work the light out.

Then there's our connector. We'll push down on that tab and unplug it, and then we'll do that exact same thing on the other side. The next thing I'll do on both sides, we've got these little push pin fasteners here, we'll just put a flat head screwdriver under the center of it to pop it up then grab it. Should be able to pull it right out. The reason we're doing that is so that we can get a little bit better access right here in order to feed our connector going to the passenger side. Now what we can do is we can take our connector here and plug it in to the end of the connector that it fits into on the one that has the yellow and red wire.

Now I can take a fish wire and I'll fish it down along the inside of the bumper here in order to pull it out the bottom, and this will help guide the connector that's going to go to the other side down so we can run it inside the rear inaudible 00:03:35 here. Then we'll pull our fish wire out the bottom. Now with our fish wire fished down through there we can take our T connector that comes off the green wire here and begin to feed it down through. You have to pull out just a little bit on our rear fascia here in order to get it to go down there. We'll be able to start feeding it through and then we can pull on our fish wire to help work it down in there. As you can see, it comes out the bottom there and we'll just gently pull the rest of it through.

I'm going to take some rubbing alcohol and I'm going to mount our module box right there. I'll put a little bit on the pad so then I can just whip that off there, because behind the tail light right about here is where we're going to have our most room. I can take some of the double sided sticky tape and I've gone ahead and peeled the paper off there and I can mount it to the back of the module. Then from there I can take it and put it in place. Now I can feed that fish wire down through again in order to pull my four pull wiring through. I've gone ahead and routed the green wire, and in order to do that the first thing I did was remove the push pin fasteners along the bottom of the rear fascia just to give myself some more room to reach up in there and work. I routed it down from where it came from up at the tail light and I sent it right across the top of the bumper there and just tried to keep it up nice and tight and continued to work it across until I got to the passenger side where I can then use a fish wire. We can just gently pull our fish wire up through and then we'll be able to make our connections. Now with that fish wire in place we can take our four pull wiring and send it down through, because on this vehicle we're going to be mounting it to the existing hitch so that I have easy access to it when they want to tow a small trailer. I've got it coming through here and just gently work it down so it comes out the bottom here. Now I'll be able to take our white wire with the ring terminal on the end here and take the self tapping screw with quarter inch head provided in the kit and we can secure it tight back here to the vehicle. Now, wherever you mount it you do want to be sure that there's nothing behind there that you could potentially damage. Now let's get our push pin fasteners pin fasteners put back into place before we reinstall our tail light. Now we can put our connector into the back of the tail light and reinstall it. You want to be sure to line up these little tabs to go all along the side here. Then down here you'll want to make sure that your wires aren't getting pinched behind where you're going to have to reinstall that screw. Then we can go to the other side and get that one reinstalled as well. Now we can go finish our four pull routing. If you'd like at this point you can use the supplied dust cover and then just tie it to a safety chain loop here, and then tie the excess up out of the way. You can also do what this customer has decided to do, and we're going to be mouthing up a universal long bracket right here. Going to be mounting this to the bottom side of the cross tube of our hitch here so that it comes out almost to where the end of our receiver tube opening is. Then I'm also going to be using a four pull wiring bracket so that it's easily accessed. They don't have to try and fish it out every time. That way it's there when they need it. We'll need to get our long bracket mounted up here. We'll be using this screw clamp right here that's supplied with it. Take that screw, flip it down there, and then that'll be a five sixteenths inch socket in order to tighten that down. Before we get that tightened down you want to make sure you got that bracket positioned where you'd like it on the hitch. We'll get that bracket nice and tight and then we can take some tin snips and cut off the excess there. Now we'll be able to take our four pull bracket and some of our provided hardware that comes with that bracket and install it onto the long bracket that we just put on. Then I can use a flat head screwdriver and a three eights wrench in order to tighten it down. Now we can take our four pull connector and feed it trough here and get it locked in place. Then I'm just going to pull that dust cover around to help keep it protected. The right up there I made a loop and zip tied the excess to the inside to the bumper support right there. Now I'm just going to replace these push pin fasteners that I removed to give myself more room to work. Now we can test or wire and make sure everything working. We're going to use part number I26. First, let's check out tail lights and our left turn signal, right turn signal, and brake lights. Looks like everything's working. That's going to complete our look at the Curt T connector vehicle wiring harness with four pull flat trailer connector part number C56222 on our 2016 KIA Soul. .

For starters I must say that this little project turned into a large one quite rapidly. Watched a video days before and was sure this could be done in a matter of minutes and I was wrong. When I pulled the wiring harness out of the package I immediately knew something was not correct with the right rear wire as it was extremely short and my suspicions were spot on. The right (Green) wire that goes to the passenger side is about a foot to short to even get close to that side of the vehicle no matter how you run the wire so I ended up hunting down a spool of wire I had kicking around in my toolbox and gathered up my soldering gun and solder and spent 40 minutes looking for my shrink tubes to seal everything up after. The sticky adhesive supplied wouldn't keep the electronic box secured so I had to go look for a roll of 3M adhesive that I purchased for another project then began the wiring. I initially believed about 8 inches of extra wire would need to be added to get to the other side. After I realized it still was to short and I had to add about an additional 4 inches of wire to reach the plug on the back of the taillight. I put the right taillight in first with no problem. The drivers side was a total nightmare. the positioning of the box as described in the video was not a good spot as it interferes with the bulbous back section of the taillight on the inside as you attempt to push it into place. After reaching for a rubber mallet I realized slamming it would not be in my best interest but screaming profanities for 20 minutes seemed to help. I really don't know which Chinese manufacturer built this garbage but I'll be straight forward, they obviously can't read a tape measure 691093

I was very pleased with the speed at which my order was shipped by your company. But outrageously disappointed in our USPS. You shipped to new York in 3 days. But it took 4 more days to come 15 miles to my house. I'm not sure if there's anything you can do about that. Once again very satisfied with your company. 220549

Does what it's supposed to do. I would have given 5 stars except, as others have noted, the green wire from the driver's side to the passenger side is too short and had to splice a wire in between. I was pretty much expecting this since it's the third one I've installed in different cars. If it wasn't for the one wire being too short it would be excellent but other than that, it's very easy to install. 398869

This wiring harness was not a direct fit for the 2014 Kia Soul. Following the instructions there is no way the green wire with connectors reach the passenger light assembly. I had to splice this wire to make the connection. It was short by at least 20 inches. The 4 wire veh. to trailer harness could have been a little longer, it reached the left side of the receiver hitch. The box said no splicing. NOT TRUE. After installation it worked as advertised. I was just glad I had the wire to complete the installation. 392851

This kit was a great improvement over the alternative type that requires you to run a wire under the car up to the battery. The video shows the installation while the car is up on a hoist. It's very difficult when the car is on the ground. The kit didn't require that step in the installation. This is the second wiring kit I've installed on two cars in the past month. Both of them required splicing in an extra 8" to the green wire going to the opposite site of the car. I spent half an hour struggling in the dark under my car trying to find a routing that would work and finally took 5 min to add the extra wire. I don't know what the kit manufacturers don't add a few penny's more worth of wire to the green lead. 547407

This review is for the Curt T connector wiring harness for a 2019 Kia Soul. The wiring harness looks to be well made. I am in the process of installing the harness. The green wire that routes to the passenger side light is NOT long enough to reach. I routed and rerouted but could not find a way to make it long enough. I am in the process of getting everthing I need to extend the wire. The wire itself is 18 gauge. 645032

- C56222
by:

Very disappointed in this purchase. The green wire is not even close to fitting which based on the video they know. Called and was told you can send it back or extend the wire. Not happy with those choices, I had a trip the next day where I needed the trailer so no choice really. I had to spend money and cut into a brand new wiring harness that was supposedly designated to fit my vehicle! Unfortunately this clouds my opinion of etrailer I purchased from them based upon the reviews of great customer service, not impressed. 641853

The lighting kit worked well. I did review the instructions in a YouTube video, since the 'instructions' included by Curt are not really specific. The kit works well, I tested with a 'spare' taillight bar I have laying around in case an actual trailer light setup gives me problems. Everything worked as it should. A couple of more inches on the green wire that goes to the passenger connector would be nice. It seemed to be a pretty snug fit, even making sure that the wire ran as straight as possible across the rear framework. I'm glad there was NO need for an extra battery power wire. 640598

Attempted install per your video, wires were too short, I couldn't connect ground in the suggested area, the right taillight wire had to be extended, and the converter was too far up to secure to anything. Plain and simple--- not enough wire. 603259

Installation was pretty easy except the green wire is a foot to short. Yes I watched the video and saw routing of the green wire, my routing was exactly the same, as well as the module placement location and the green wire did not reach the right rear tail light. "LENGTHEN THE GREEN WIRE!" you will have to cut and splice a section of wire to make it reach, so this in NOT "PLUG AND PLAY". besides that shortcoming it works just fine. 597153

Installation almost simple. This kit is very simple, nearly plug and play. Almost everything you need to install is included. The reviews that say the green wire is too short are incorrect. If the green wire follows the correct path it is the perfect length. I highly recommend watching the installation video. The video solves the short wire problem and gives you some good tips. There are some tight places you have to stick your hand, but all and all it was easy. My installation took about 60 mins. A lift or even a jack would make it a bit easier. etrailer.com are superb with their product knowledge and quality. 447022

Hello We had the wiring kit installed but it never did work correctly. I have a boat trailer that I had normally towed with my GMC pickup with factory trailer wiring and connection and never had any issues. • Troubleshooting Damaged Curt Wiring Harness C56222 in 2013 Kia Soul
  • Thank you for your February 2016 purchase of the Curt 4-pole wiring harness # C56222, which is a confirmed fit on the 2013 Kia Soul without LED-type lighting. This unit is indeed a plug-n-play harness that can only install one way, by plugging in at the taillight connectors. The only other wiring required for installation is tightly securing the included white ground wire with ring terminal to a bare metal spot on the vehicle, as is shown in the linked video for a 2016 Soul. This...

  • Connecting 2012 Kia Soul to Trailer with Separate Wiring System
  • Since your trailer has a separate system where the brakes, turn signals and tail lights all have their own circuit, you will need to install a converter like the Curt # C56196. The wires going into the converter from the 4-Way connector will match color for color. The brown running light wire will bypass this converter. The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C56222 is the correct harness for your 2012 Kia Soul as long as it does not have LED lights. This will plug directly...

Now to connect to the wiring on your trailer you will first need to make an adapter. There are two good ways to accomplish this. You can convert the motorcycle trailer and the motorcycle to a combined system that uses the same light for the brake light and turn signals. The rear lamp assemblies would need to be replaced, and put a converter like...

  • Curt Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2013 Kia Soul Exclaim
  • For your 2013 Kia Soul Exclaim the Curt hitch part # C11110 has been confirmed as a fit and would work well. You are correct in that the difference between it and the # C11110 is that it comes with a ball mount. For a hitch ball you would want the part # A-80, for trailer wiring # C56222 and then you would be good to go. Weight distribution systems can only be installed on vehicles with 2 inch hitches available that are rated for use with a WD system. This hitch cannot use a WD system.

  • Recommendation For A Trailer Hitch For A 2015 Kia Soul
  • Every vehicle is slightly different and needs a hitch designed for their frame. This particular hitch is too long because it is not specifically designed to fit a 2015 Kia Soul. For your 2015 Kia Soul, the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver, Item # 24915, is a confirmed fit. This hitch will not work with an EV model and none of our manufacturers offer one for an EV model at this time. This Draw-Tite hitch is a Class I with a 1-1/4 inch opening that bolts-on and can be used...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2015 Kia Soul
  • The Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver, # 24915, that you mentioned, will work great for your 2015 Kia Soul. It will provide you with a 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch receiver that has a gross towing capacity of 2,000 pounds and a tongue weight capacity of 200 pounds. If you plan on doing any towing you will also need wiring, # C56220 for models with LED taillights and # C56222 for models without. For a ball mount you can use # C45521, pin and clip # PC2, and a properly sized ball....

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Wiring on 2010 Kia Soul that Won't Activate Tailights but Truck 4-Way Does
  • One of two things are happening. Either the trailer is drawing too much amperage for the trailer wiring harness or there is a weak ground on the lights of the trailer which is causing the lights to not operate unless a more powerful wiring harness is attached. Check the grounds for the trailer to make sure they are attached a clean metal surface. Also check condition of main ground of trailer. Instead of going to the powered harness you could swap the lights on the trailer to LED...

  • Troubleshooting The Curt T-Connector Wiring Harness On A 2012 Kia Soul
  • The first thing I would check is to ensure you have the pigtails attached to the taillights on the correct side of the vehicle, the driver's side pigtail from the harness will have a yellow wiring running in between the other wires whereas, the passenger side will not. The next task would entail checking the ground wire on both the vehicle and trailer side of the harness to ensure a proper connection. Followed by using a circuit tester like part # ALL640595. You will want to ensure...

  • Running and Brake Lights on 2013 Kia Soul Not Working After Installing Curt Trailer Wiring Harness
  • I spoke with my contact at Curt and he stated that if your 2013 Kia Soul has LED tail lights then there have been some issues with the wiring harness. If you do not have LED lights then it is likely a bad converter and it will need to be replaced. For a model with LED tail lights use # 118637.

  • Does Trailer Wiring for 2019 Kia Soul Require Running Wire up to Vehicle Battery
  • For your 2019 Kia Soul the trailer wiring kits do require you to run a power wire up to the vehicle battery. The Curt part # C56222 that you referenced fits up to a 2018 Soul which might be where your confusion is. The correct Curt kit for your 2019 model is the part # C56220 which does require you run the battery wire. I attached install instructions for this kit for you to check out as well.

  • Dolly Towing Kia Soul w/ Hitch and Converter w/ Flat-4 Behind Combined RV
  • Does your tow dolly not have lighting already? Of the various flat towing lighting options available for your Soul (see provided link), a bulb and socket kit like # RM-155 or a magnetic mount lamp kit like # RM-2120 would be the easiest to install and use. Both these kits have the benefit of remaining completely independent of the vehicle wiring, and no diodes will be needed. Other options like the # 38955 or the # 154-792-118158 diode kit would require more extensive installation....

  • Trailer Hitch and Ball Mount Fit for a 2015 Kia Soul
  • For your 2015 Kia Soul we have 1-1/4 inch trailer hitches like the Draw Tite part # 24915 which require you to use the recommended ball mount part # 3593. Which then for ball sizes we have the part # 19258 for a 2 inch ball or part # 19256 for a 1-7/8 inch ball. For trailer wiring the Tekonsha harness part # 118637 fits for if the vehicle has LED lights or standard incandescents so it would be the correct kit to use.

  • Can Hitch and Wiring Harness from 2011 Kia Soul Be Installed on 2015 Soul
  • Wiring harnesses for the 2011 Kia Soul such as the Curt # C56222 that fits versions without LED lights can certainly be re-installed in a different vehicle so long as that other vehicle is compatible. As it happens the 2015 Soul can use this same trailer wiring harness so it will work for you. I suggest you use dielectric grease like # LT37534 to help protect the connections from moisture and dirt. However, the hitches for the 2011 and 2015 model years are NOT the same so you cannot...

  • Tow Bar Wiring Recommendation for 2012 Kia Soul for Activating Amber Turn Signals/Red Stoplights
  • We have diode tow bar wiring kits that you can wire to your vehicle being flat towed that will allow the turn signals and the stoplights to activate at the same time as your tow vehicle. For your 2012 Kia Soul the kit you'd need is the part # 154-792-118158. This comes with everything needed to install the wiring and convert the normally combined trailer wiring circuits of your tow vehicle to operate the seperate circuits of your Kia Soul. I attached a diagram that shows how it installs...

  • Will Curt Trailer Wiring for 2013 Kia Soul Power a Trailer with LED Lights
  • Yes, the Curt harness, part # C56222, powers trailer lights regardless of whether the lights are LED or incandescent. It does only work on the Kia Souls that have incandescent lights and not LED lights so it's exactly what you need. If you also still need a trailer hitch I recommend the Draw-Tite, part # 24839, because it doesn't require a support strap like the Curt does. The Curt only needs a strap if you're carrying accessories like a bike rack or cargo carrier and it sounds like...
