Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area, behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the interior plastic covers to access these connection points. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead to your car battery under the rear floor panel on the driver's side. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2016 Ram ProMaster 2500

Today on our 2016 Ram ProMaster 2500 we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the Curt T Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with the Four Pole Flat Trailer Connector. Part number is C56209. Now this is what your kit's going to look like when you pull it out of your packaging. This is going to be the main part of the system here, that's our four pole flat trailer connector. This is going to allow us to plug in our running lights, left turn and brake and right turn and brake in our trailer, cargo carrier, whatever it is we might be hauling. Basically those signals are going to come into our converter box. This is going to convert it into a usable signal for our trailer.

The great thing about a powered converter box is that we're only getting our signals from our lighting. We've got a roll of 12 volt wire here, we're going to be able to run that up and in this case connect it to the positive jump start terminal underneath the hood. See our small ground wire there, we'll make the connection there. That's basically going to isolate our vehicle from our trailer. As we're hauling different trailers, some of them might have shorts, some of them might not.

It's going to protect our vehicle from any of those shorts being surged or being pushed into the car, it's going to keep it protected. Now also coming with our kit we're going to have a dust cover to cover up our four pole plug. We're going to have a ring terminal. Here we've got our fuse and the self tapping screw we'll need to get all of our connections made. You'll see our butt connectors here. These connections are going to be made on the exterior of the vehicle, so I'm going to swap these out with two of part number DW05745.

That's going to be a heat shrink butt connector that'll give us superior moisture resistance. Now the first thing we need to do is gain access in behind our taillights, which are here. These vans come in a lot of different configurations, but this one happens to have a panel here secured with Philips screws, so we're going to take that out. It's just a large rectangular shaped opening here that we want to get into. Now if we look behind that panel right down here we're going to have the plug that plugs into the back of the taillight housing. Now, the instructions call for us to make our connections in here, which we're going to do, but it also calls for us to run our wire up and over, also run our 12 volt wire up through the wall.

As you can see, there's not a lot of covering on these walls; we don't want wires just hanging around inside of the van, so we're going to run our kit outside. Biggest change to that is that we're going to pull these taillight housings out. There's going to be a big nut, kind of in a press form nut there, going to be one above the plug and one just below it. We want to get those loosened up. We can just gently pull forward on that. You'll see our plug right here has got a small tab on the top. We'll just push down on that tab and we can wiggle that to separate it, and we'll set this aside for just a second. Now I'm going to take the black wire that comes off of the wiring harness and the bulk black wire that we had, I'm going to get these connected so when we pull our box and our wiring up into position we won't have to worry about trying to squeeze our hands in there. Just want to strip the ends of both of those back, we'll use the butt connector part number I gave you. Crimp that down, and then just with a heat source like a blow torch, you can use a mini torch, you can use a heat gun or just a lighter. You just want to go around it and heat up the outside of it. You'll see it start to shrink down. You'll know you've got it shrank down fully when you see the clear gel start to come out of the end there. Now we're going to take a pull wire and we'll pass it right down in this gap. We're using air line tubing, you could use a coat hanger, a little bit stiffer piece of wire, whatever you have handy there. We just want to push that so that it comes out down here below, just like that. Now we'll just tape our driver side plug, which is the one that has the red, yellow, and brown wire, right off to our pull wire. We'll gently pull. Once we've got it up we'll get that tape removed off there and we can plug it right into our factory connector. This is going to be passed into the vehicle just like this. Slide our connectors together, you'll hear a little click. The other end, that'll be plugged right into the back of our taillight housing. Pass just those three wires in and put our taillight back in position. Now we'll replace the nuts we removed earlier and we can get underneath there and get our box mounted into position. Now we can do the same thing for our passenger side and get the wire pulled up there. I'm going to pull all my excess green wire in and we can just bundle that up back here. Plastic panel put back in position, or if yours is different you can put whatever panel you had back in. Now, for mounting our box we want to use our double sided foam tape. We'll clean the back of it off really well with a little bit of rubbing alcohol. Peel one side of our tape off and then we'll adhere that right to the box. You'll want to make sure that sticks on there really well. We're also going to reach up inside. Right in here there's a really nice flat area, just want to get that cleaned off, again, with some rubbing alcohol. Make sure there aren't any oils or anything like that on it. Then we can raise our box up and get it stuck right into position there. Now our green wire and our four pole wire are both going to go over towards the passenger side. Got some little pieces of wire loom that go across here if you've got the backup sensors. If you don't have the backup sensors then where these bolts connect there are some little metal brackets. Use our provided zip ties there just to go around that wire loom. One thing to keep in mind is I typically always run out of zip ties, so might want to have a few extras of those on hand. Once we get to the middle section here our four pole is going to stay and our green wire will continue over. Then we're going to pull back our extra four pole wire here, just keep what we're going to need to make our attachment to our trailer. That should be pretty good. Going to use another zip tie to lock out that position, and then the excess here we can just zip tie up out of the way. We'll go right up over the hitch and bring that excess out the back side and get that secured off. We can just bring the excess four pole right around and place our cap on just by sliding it over. Then I like to use the cap to go around our hitch. That's going to help hold it up and out of the way, keep it from bouncing down the highway behind us. Now, for getting our ground wire set we're going to go right to the bottom of the bumper beam. It's nice, sturdy steel. Take our ring terminal, it'll fit right there well so we'll get our hole started with our provided self tapping screw. We're using a 1/4 inch bit driver. You want that to be secure enough so you can't wiggle that terminal, and the excess we'll bundle up with a zip tie. Now we're going to start running this 12 volt power wire up towards the front. This is something that is going to have constant power to it, so we want to avoid any sharp edges, any significant sources of heat or anything else really that might cause damage to our wire. This little groove in the frame works out really well for a pass through. Once we get up here we can just join in with our brake lines, really. They're going to go to the same area that we want to go. We'll secure it off anywhere we can. The more attachment points here we have, the less chance for failure we'll have. Now, once we have it connected up here at our forward location we're just going to take the end of it and put it up there towards the front driver side. Once we get up there we should be able to find it. We want to be sure that when we pull we pull through all of our slack. Bring up the excess here. Then once we've confirmed that we don't have any twists or any extra down there, we'll want to get this zip tied off to another anchor point up here on the top side. We're going to be attaching right in here on one of these studs. Now, to get to those studs we'll need to take this top cover off. You'll just want to use an 8 millimeter socket, we'll have a nut right up here on this front corner, and then also on the back side there. You'll see we can just lift that cover right up and off there. All right, now we're ready to get our fuse holder put together. On one side we're going to add our yellow butt connector. To the other side we'll add our ring terminal. Now we can trim off our black wire here. We'll leave just a little bit of excess in case there's ever any changes that need to be made. Get that stripped back and that's going to go on the other side of the butt connector. That'll be crimped down and then you can use the same heat source you used before to get that shrank down. We'll use a 13 millimeter socket to pull one of the nuts off there. Add that ring terminal on and then replace the nut. Get that secured, and then we'll just add in our fuse. We'll just slide that right on our fuse holder. Cap that off, and then secure off our excess wire here. Now to test our wiring out we're going to use part number I26. This is just going to be a standard four pole tester, and we should see lights come on as we go through our signals. We'll start with our running lights. Move to our left blinker, and our right blinker, and our brakes. Now with everything working properly that's going to complete our installation of the Curt T Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with the Four Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number C56209 on our 2016 Ram ProMaster 2500.

I'm very pleased with this wiring kit... fit perfectly. There were a few awkward spots to fish wires/plugs through, but not too bad. The installation video was extremely helpful, although I did a couple things slightly differently. The van in the video had a finished interior. A plain cargo van has plenty of openings in the framework to run wires through, so I ran my (right taillight) wire through the frame over the doors, not tucking it in the weatherstrip. Up front, I opted to follow Curt's printed instructions, removing the plastic step-well. There are a couple wiring clips and a raceway behind there that give good protection to the main power wire. I'm sure the video's under-the-seat technique would be quicker, though. I don't expect to pull a trailer a lot, so for now at least, I'll store the plug clean and dry inside, below the taillight, and just pull it out when needed. 287330
