Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2014 Ford Edge

Today, on our 2014 Ford Edge, well be installing the Curt T-connector wiring harness with 4-pole flat trailer connector, part number C56120. To begin our install, we'll first open up the rear hatch. We need to locate the fasteners that secure the rear taillight assemblies. Once we've located the fasteners, we'll then go ahead and remove them. Once we remove the fasteners, we'll then go ahead and pull back on the taillight assembly to release the fasteners and alignment pins underneath. NOTE: It will be easier to remove if you take a flat-blade screwdriver or in this case we're using a plastic pry tool, get between the taillight assembly and the body of the vehicle and gently work it free. Here you can see the alignment pins underneath. Next, we'll remove the wiring connector from the taillight assembly.

Pressing on the locking tab and removing the connector. Once we have the wiring free, we'll go ahead and set the taillight assembly aside. Now, with our taillight assemblies removed, well go ahead and open up the spare tire cover and remove the rear threshold. To remove the threshold, you simply just pull up to release the fasteners underneath. Next, we can remove the cargo trays that sit on the either side of the spare tire. Now, with the cargo compartments out of the way, we're going to move back behind the taillight assembly and remove the manufacturers grommet as the rear taillight wiring passes through the body of the vehicle. This will allow an opening on each side for our new wiring harness to fit through the body of the vehicle.

We'll take the yellow, brown, and red wire harness, feed it up behind the paneling on the inside and out. Once we have the wire pulled out, we can take the manufacturers connector and plug it directly into the T-connector of the new Curt harness. Next, using a pair of sidecutters, we'll cut the grommet, slide the new Curt wiring harness into the grommet and reinstall it. Next, we'll take the green wire connector coming from the converter box and route it over to the passenger side and repeat the same process. Now, using the zip ties provided with our install kit, I'm just going to go ahead and secure the new wire to the manufacturers harness, and I'll cut off the excess of the zip tie to clean up my install look. Then, I can go ahead and reinstall the taillight assemblies. There's a black pigtail from our converter box that will attach to a long length of black wire provided with our install kit. The converter will ultimately run off the vehicle's battery.

Now, to help protect this connection point, I recommend to wrap it up with some black electrical tape. Next, we'll go ahead and get out extra length of black wire for this application running through the manufacturers grommet here on the driver's side in front of the spare tire is a perfect location. To get through the grommet, we'll use our utility knife to cut a small slice in the grommet and push our wire through it. Now, we'll go ahead and take the double-sided adhesive and adhere it to the converter box. Well remove one side, attach it to the converter box, and firmly press it in place. We can then take our converter box and mount it here in the vehicle.

Keep in mind when mounting your converter box, you're looking for a clean flat surface, preferably sheet metal. Go ahead and remove the other side of the two-way adhesive, and attach it here below the driver's side taillight assembly. We'll need to take the white wire with the preattached ring terminal. This will be the ground for our new converter box. We need to attach it to the body of the vehicle using a self-tapping screw. Once we've secured the ring terminal, we'll now go ahead and secure our wiring and reinstall the interior trim components. Next, well go ahead and get our extra length of black wire to the top of the engine compartment. Keep in mind as your routing your wire, we're going to go ahead and secure it with the zip ties as necessary. Once we get our wire routed to the top of the engine compartment, we'll go ahead and secure it. It's ultimately going to route here to the positive battery post. Before me make our connection, we'll want to install the inline fuse holder supplied with the install kit. To do that, well strip back both ends of our fuseholder, attaching the ring terminal to one side and a butt connector to the other. We can then go ahead and trim off the excess from our power wire, strip it back, and add it to the other side of our butt connector. We'll route it to the positive battery post where we can remove the positive battery post stud nut, install our ring terminal, and then resecure the nut. Next, I'll go ahead and tape up our connection point. Put our fuse into the fuse holder. We'll use the 10-amp fuse supplied with our install kit. We can then secure the fuse holder here to the manufacturers cable. That will complete our install. Next, we'll go ahead and go over basic operation of our 4-pole harness. Bring the harness toward the center of the vehicle and out over the rear threshold. NOTE: Stay away from the latch as pinching the wire off in the latch can harm it. However, the weather stripping is thick enough that we can simply close our rear hatch on it and pull out what's necessary to run down to our hitch accessory. Once we're finished using it, we'll simply roll it up and store it in the spare tire cargo area. Next, we'll go ahead and show you how to check your new 4-pole harness using a test light. Take the ground clamp from our test light and put it on our white wire terminal, testing the brown wire for our running light circuit, the yellow wire for the driver's side turn signal and brake, and the green wire terminal for the passenger side turn signal and brake. Now, we know our 4-pole harness works, we're ready to hit the road. That does it for the install of our Curt T-connector install kit with 4-pole flat trailer connector, part number C56120, on our 2014 Ford Edge. .

I received this harness today and installed it in 45 minutes, on my lunch break. I have an Edge Limited with electric tailgate lift and base speaker in the rear, so both my right and left side were supposed to be difficult to access. At least according to the other reviews. The left side, the side with the electric lift gate arm, was done in this manner. I removed the tail light and pulled out the grommet from the outside, then fed the wiring up the inside of the trunk with my arm and used my other hand from the grommet hole to feel for the wiring. Once I felt it, I pulled it through. The other side was a bit more tricky. Once the outer trim is removed, the speaker cabinet is still in the way. But, I found 3 10mm bolts. I loosened them (they don't need to be fully removed) and that gave me enough room to pull the cabinet away from the wall and slide the wiring up and out of the grommet hole. Piece of cake. I then took the positive battery wiring and fed it through starting from the battery. Go backwards, it's much easier. Great kit and was a snap to install. 224809

With the instructions provided, including the associated video, the installation was really easy, and all of the components were top quality. However, the first time we hooked up a camper we had just driven 4 hours to pick up, the brakes defaulted to "on", and we could not drive with the brake controller hooked up. Now the best part..... An etrailer technician took our call immediately, and had the background knowledge to know that some Nissan Xterras had factory wiring reversed, which required the corresponding kit wiring to be reversed. After we did so, the system worked perfectly. I would not have figured that out in a million years!!!!! Great product made even better by fantastic service!!! Customer for life..... 572049

  • Trailer Wiring Harness Recommendations for 2013 Ford Edge
To install a 4-pole trailer connector on your 2013 Ford Edge, I'd recommend the Tow Ready # 118515. This wiring harness does have a direct connection to the battery, this is done for a good reason. Years ago, you could tap into the taillight circuits to power your trailer taillights. The wires were of sufficient gauge so that plenty of power for both the vehicle and the trailer taillights could be drawn through the vehicle's taillight circuits. Now, due to cost restraints, the automobile...

There are a set of installation instructions included with the Curt Custom Wiring Harness, # C56120. I have also attached a link to the instructions for you to check out. The instructions even include photos of the installation process. To install this wiring harness on your 2013 Ford Edge, you will need to gain access to the back of the tail light assemblies. This is done by removing two bolts that hold the tail lights in place. Once you remove the tail light assembly, you will see...

  • Trailer Lights Only Work with Doors Open
It sounds like you do not have the 12 volt power supply installed correctly. The 12 volt power supply like the one on the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness part # C56120 which is a fit for your 2012 Ford Edge will need to be ran directly to the battery with the included 10 amp fuse placed 6" from the positive terminal. You cannot use any other power source for the wiring harness and it sounds like you may have it tied into an interior lighting circuit which is why the lights only...

  • Troubleshooting a 2008 Ford F150 Trailer Connector with all Functions not Working
You really should not have to put a plastic bag over the trailer connector on your vehicle during rain. It should be protected enough that that would not be necessary. In fact, the plastic bag could actually have collected water and held it to the connector and caused moisture to short out circuits on the connector. It sounds like a relay or fuse is blown and took out all of the trailer wiring circuits. If you can find the battery junction box you should check the condition of the following...

  • 2011 Ford Edge SEL Trailer Wiring Battery Wire Installation
It's hard to say exactly what the wire you found in the back of your 2011 Ford Edge was used for. It could have been for a stereo. But since the Curt Wiring harness # C56120 that you referenced requires you to run the battery wire all the way to the positive battery post you would need to run that wire to the battery instead of the fuse box if you plan to use it for this install. I attached an install video for this harness for you to check out as well.

  • Troubleshooting LED Trailer Taillights that Stay Dimly Lit
Since it only takes a tiny amount of voltage to illuminate an LED what you are seeing is normal. The tiny bit of voltage present on your trailer wiring harness is illuminating your LEDs slightly. What you can do is install load resistors on the circuits of your trailer that are dimly lit and the problem will go away. For that you would want the part # P230004A. • Troubleshooting a Blown Trailer wiring Harness on a 2012 Ford Edge EcoBoost
I hate to say it, but the company who installed your harness is probably right. We see what you are describing pretty often and the problem is almost always a short on the trailer. Or its that the lights on the trailer draw too much amperage for the converter and it shorts out like that. The reason the box will short out and not the fuse is because the fuse is between the battery and the converter, whereas the short is on the other side of the converter box. The fuse protects the converter...

The next step I recommend you take is test the right hand turn signal wire that leads into the converter box.
