Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side interior trim panel in your rear cargo area.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plug on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2010 Acura MDX

Today, on our 2010 Acura MDX, we will be installing the Curt Wiring Harness, Part Number C56038. First thing we'll start with is opening up the hatch and gaining access to the back of the vehicle. We'll want to go ahead and move this weather cover out of the way, and get into our storage compartment. With that out of the way, we'll pop this threshold trim off. Remove the jack cover. Remove this cover, right here, which houses a lot of our electrical connections. It just takes a screw driver, and pop the top off, and slides up and out.

The first thing we'll have to do is find a place to mount the control box. To do that, we'll go ahead and pull this carpeting out of the way, and back in here it looks like an ideal location. We'll have plenty of access up to our electrical panel. We'll have a factory grounding point, and we'll have plenty of room to run our wires. Now that we've determined where we're going to mount the box in what looks like a safe location to mount the box, we'll run the wiring before we adhere the box to anything, just to make sure that everything is going to fit. We've got the wiring harnass ran, we'll go ahead and plug it into that factory port until it clicks.

It's now locked in place. Now that we've determined where we're going to mount the box, we've got to find a grounding location. On our Acura, here, we do have a factory mounting point which is going to work perfect for us. Just remove the bolt, place in the ground wire, tighten it down. That's it for the ground. Now that we've to the wiring run, we're going to go ahead and get ready to mount the box.

You see we have an in line fuse holder. We'll go ahead and get that situated, first. Pop in the included fuse, and put the cover on. The first thing we want to do is use this included doubled sided adhesive pad. This is pressure sensitive, so go ahead and place it on the back. Just give it a nice firm press on there.

Make sure it adheres. Once you've done that, you can go ahead and remove the other backing. We've selected this spot, right down here next to this other control box, and under our cargo hook. I'm going to place it right there, keep it nice and out of the way. It will be under the factory paneling. You'll never see it. One other thing that might be worth noting, is that fuse holder we just looked at a minute ago. Keep that somewhere where it's easy to get to. You don't want to tuck that back behind the box, blow a fuse, and then have to remove everything just to change the fuse. All right, with our box mounted and everything in place, all we have next is our four pull wire. I'm just going to run that from underneath the carpet, right there at the seam. Clean it up a little bit and leave it tucked down in our cargo area, for when we need it. If you want to clean it up more than that, you do have plenty of room under your factory carpeting. We can even set it back down there and you never know it's in place. It's time to put everything back together. Just reverse order of what we did before. That panel locks down into place, clips in at the top, and it's ready to go. Your jack cover, just slides in place. You've got the 2 locks. Put them in there, turn them 90 degrees, and it's locked in place. Before we drop that cargo cover back down, we want to put the threshold trim back in place and make sure we find some way that's not really going to pinch the wires. We want to keep it as far away from this latch for our rear door. Once we've got it lined up, it just pops into place, as well. We can lock everything back in place and we're ready to go. When we need the wire, we can just go ahead and just pull it out from our cargo area. Like before, just make sure to keep it a couple of inches away from this hook, so we don't get it locked in the locking mechanism there, and destroy our wire. The weather stripping, here, around the side will protect the wire when the door is closed. We just determine how much we need. We can go ahead and close the hatch, and there's our wiring. We are going to test our electrical connections, here. The first thing we'll do is connect the clip to our ground point on our 4 plug harness. We're going to test the running lights, the left blinker, the right blinker, and the brake lights on both the left and right side. As you can see, everything's working. That's going to conclude today's installation of the Curt Wiring Harness, Part Number C56038, on our 2010 Acura MDX. .

Part and installation exactly as described. Took me 2 hours - start to finish. Being in AZ I didn't have any rust etc. to contend with nor any threading issues. I did use WD40 on the rubber pieces and in the holes for the bolts. My driveway is at a slight down slope - so I backed into the garage (chocking the front tires) and further elevated the rear-end with the use of a 2x6 and 2x4s. This allowed me to have several additional inches of space. Also - for the spare tire - use the spare tire crow-bar to lower the spare tire (pop the little plastic piece on the floor of the rear end, insert the crow bar, then rotate counter clockwise - the tire will then lower). I did not have a 2nd set of hands so I used a bungee cord to hold up the hitch on the passenger side while I drilled the first bolt on the driver side. It helped greatly to have a drill with a socket adapter (3/8" and 1/2") and extension for each. Picked up the adapters before installing after reading the reviews of tight quarters and painstakingly manually tightening the bolts. Adapters are $4/each at local hardware store and totally worth it vs using a manual socket. A torque wrench is highly recommended since I used the power drill to screw in the bolt - then I used the torque wrench and surprisingly it required a bit more turning to get to the 136lbs of torque required as called out in the instructions. I took a pick of all the tools that I used to install. 209547

Very easy install—no need to buy a more expensive harness. I ran it through the jack compartment to the panel on the left rear where it simply plugs in and I attached the ground to the lower existing bolt with the existing nut. Simple as that. The cover for the panel where it plugs in pulls off from the top with the help of a flat screwdriver. The instructions are very thorough. 484682

I've always gotten quality products from etrailer and the Curt line maintains that tradition. The receiver and wiring harness for my MDX are top quality, were really easy to install after watching the videos and saved me hundreds of dollars over the Acura branded parts. 170354

After a year Im still very pleased with my receiver and wiring. I use the receiver at least weekly for a Thule bike rack, but the wiring harness only rarely.

Installation was a breeze once the spare tire was lowered and the muffler mounts were removed. Having an extra set of hands definitely makes lifting the hitch a lot easier but I've also been able to use a floor jack as well. I also installed the C56038 which only took a few steps and it remains out of the way when not in use. All in all it's a solid hitch and it tucks nicely under the bumper. 640596

First of all, after placing order and got received was about a week! That is awesome, usually prep for shipping takes a week from others stores! Second but not less meaningful, quality of unit, beyond expectations, wires are solid, crimping nice and even. Installation process is simple as it could! But, I my self a tech and put in the installation a little changed, instead making a hole for a ground I used factory ground point, and location of box I moved in a left front part of storage compartment, that will reduce stress for a wiring and give me more room to store rest of wiring. After it I did check connector for output voltage all good and steady. Haven’t have time to try it with a trailer but 100% sure all will be good! Thank you 580412

Followed the video instructions & was pleasantly rewarded with no surprises during the installation. I bought a $6 6-12V circuit tester at the tool store before installing so was able to test the circuit as shown in the video. Though there was a warning that you might need to get a relay from an Acura dealer for the unit to function, this immediately worked fine on my 2011 Acura MDX. 493453

  • How to Route Trailer Wiring Permanently to the Outside of a 2013 Acura MDX
  • The Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 75614 for your 2013 Acura MDX is now the only option that comes with the mounting location for a 4-Way mounting bracket. Hidden Hitch has been discontinued. In addition to the hitch and the wiring you will also need bracket # 18144. For wiring harness # 118424 or any of the wiring harnesses for the vehicle you can route the 4-Way through the vehicle and outside to attach it to the bracket rather than storing the harness in the vehicle when not in use. • The Curt trailer wiring harness part # C56038 has been confirmed as a fit for your 2009 Acura MDX and does include the needed harnesses and relays for it to plug right into your vehicle's wiring. We do not sell a version of this that also provides a 7-way, but if you are towing a trailer with surge brakes most likely you wouldn't need a 7-way. If you really do want a plug in version that has both the 7-way and 4-way active then the dealer option would be the way to go. Otherwise you...

  • Both the Tow Ready wiring # 118424 and Curt wiring # C56038 are correct fits for the Acura MDX, but the # 118424 is a confirmed fit for more model years. The # 118424 will fit 2007 through 2010 MDX models, while the # C56038 is only confirmed to fit 2007 through 2008 models. Both wiring harnesses plug in at the same factory port, as they are both custom fit for the vehicle, and both feature a powered converter to protect the MDX electrical system. I have included links to an installation...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendation for a 2013 Acura MDX
  • We have everything you would need to tow a small trailer with your 2013 Acura MDX. First let's start with a hitch. For that the Curt part # 13354 is the most popular option and would work well so we would recommend it for you. I attached an install video for this product for you to check out as well. Since you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4...

  • Will the Curt Receiver Hitch # 13354 Fit a 2010 Acura MDX with Factory Spare Tire
  • As long as the spare tire under your vehicle is the factory installed spare then the Curt Trailer Hitch, item # 13354, will fit on your vehicle with the spare tire in its original location. The spare will need to be removed to install the hitch but it will be returned to its normal location once the hitch install is complete. I have listed some items you may need to complete your Class III towing setup. Drawbar # 2923 Hitch Ball # 19260 or # 19247 Hitch Lock # e98880 Pin...

  • 7-Way Adapter Recommendation for Curt 4-Way C56038
  • Now if your trailer does not have brakes all you would need is the part # 37185 as an adapter to convert the 4-way to a 7-way. If you do have trailer brakes you would need the # ETBC7 instead of the # 37185 and a brake controller. This kit comes with everything needed to wire up the 7-way and install a brake controller. For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Ball Mount for 2012 Acura MDX
  • I have a great solution for you. First for a trailer hitch, The Curt Class III Round Tube Receiver Hitch # 13354 is a great option. No drilling will be required during installation, however keep in mind that the heat shields will need to be removed and reinstalled. This 2 inch hitch opening will provide a 400 pound tongue weight capacity and 4,000 pound towing capacity, although you will also want to check the vehicle's capacities as listed in the owner's manual. I have attached an installation...

  • Part Needed to Convert 4-Pole Wiring on 2008 Acura MDX to 7-Way Type Trailer Connector
  • I didn't find any order history for wiring for your 2008 Acura MDX but if you do have a 4-pole kit installed such as one of the compatible items like # C56038 shown on the linked page then we sure can help you with upgrading that wiring format to the 7-way type like # HM40975-11998. The one item you will use is our 7-Way install kit # ETBC7. This all-inclusive kit has everything you need, from the 7-way socket to the wiring, connectors and circuit breakers. This will give you a fully-functioning...

  • Tail Light Kit for a Curt Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier on a 2009 Acura MDX
  • Since there is no specific light kit that will fit the Curt carrier # C18132 what you will need to do is use a light kit like # 20174, and then add 2 brackets, # BK70BB. You will also need some self-tapping screws # 101131802, or drill and use the hardware of your choice to mount the brackets. Also, make sure that your MDX has a 4-Way trailer connector to plug the light kit into. If you need to add trailer wiring, use a # C56038 that you referenced. If you wanted an LED option you...

  • Recommendation for 2009 Acura MDX Trailer Wiring Harness and Brake Controller
  • For your 2009 Acura MDX you will start with a 4-way trailer connector if you don't already have one. I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118424 which plugs into the factory wiring harness located behind the trim panel on the driver's side. I've attached a video to assist. This harness has a slightly better reputation than the Curt # C56038 which is also a fit. Then I recommend using the brake controller wiring kit # ETBC7 which will give...

  • Transporting 2 Hobie Mirage Outbacks with 2011 Acura MDX
  • The Hobie Outback you have weighs in at 85 lbs so it would be harder to get onto the roof of a vehicle even if you had a roof rack and roof capacity that would accommodate 170 lbs of just kayaks. We don't carry any roof racks for your vehicle that would have enough weight capacity so best option is a kayak trailer like the Malone MegaSport Trailer with MegaWing Kayak Cradles # MPG550-M. You'll need a trailer hitch installed on your 2011 Acura MDX as well like the # 13354. For trailer...

  • Curt Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2009 Acura MDX
  • For the reasons you listed the Curt hitch part # 13354 that you referenced is our best selling hitch for the 2009 Acura MDX. Especially since you can keep a full sized spare unlike the other hitches that only let you use a mini spare. This is the hitch I would recommend for you and for anyone with your vehicle. For trailer wiring I would recommend the Curt Trailer Wiring Harness part # C56038. Install video attached. For ball mounts I recommend the etrailer Ball Mount Kit # 989900....

  • Troubleshooting 4-Pole Installation in 2007 Acura MDX Towing Pop-Up Camper Trailer
  • If two separate wiring harnesses installed in your 2007 Acura MDX have both failed after being connected to the same trailer, then I suggest you carefully check the trailer for problems like shorts and damaged insulation in its wiring. This type of harness is intended to take the hit from such a trailer fault rather than allow it to damage the car's delicate (and costly-to-replace) internal wiring. A new trailer harness is a lot cheaper and easier to install than new vehicle wiring, but...

  • Providing a Maintenance Charge to a Trailer Mounted Battery on Trailer Towed by 2010 Acura MDX
  • In order to provide a maintenance charge to a trailer mounted battery you would need to have a trailer connector on the vehicle that has a 12 volt circuit. A 4-Way flat, like what is on harness # C56038, only has the basic lighting functions. But you can add a 7-Way trailer connector and keep the 4-Way in place. You would need adapter # 37185, a 40 amp circuit breaker, # PK54540, and about 25 feet of wire # 10-1-1. Put 25 in the quantity box to get 25 feet. The 4-Way you have will...
