Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels in your rear cargo area.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2013 Mazda CX-5

Today on the 2013 Mazda CX-5, we're going to install part number C56011 from Curt. Now, our wiring harness installs right behind the tail lights so we're going to remove some interior panels. The first up, we'll go ahead and open up the hatch. Then we'll take the spare tire cover and fold it back. Now, in the inside edge, there will be two plastic fasteners that we have to remove. Then we'll go ahead and remove the threshold. A steady pressure pulling up on the bottom edge pulling straight up will get to release in the clips.

Maybe it will be helpful to pry in from the outside edge as well. Now, before we can move our anterior panels, we also need to remove the film inserts that are around the spare time. We'll put this aside. Then next, we need to go ahead and remove the interior cover. Take it up and put it out of the way for now as well. Then we'll loosen up the interior panels in the side.

At the bottom of our threshold, we need to remove a plastic fastener there. We also need to remove the tie-down point as well on the inside edge. We also need to remove interior cover on the inside edge right behind tail lights. Then we'll gently pull back the interior panels just enough to get our hands behind it Next thing, go ahead and start working with the wire harness. We'll take the wiring harness ends with the yellow wire and the red wire.

We'll go ahead and run it up behind the anterior panel and out the opening. Then we'll go ahead and just connect the wiring harness that goes right into the taillight with the matching ends. There's a small tag where to push down then pull it apart. We'll take the new Curt T-connector and go ahead and push it into the existing taillight socket and the other half will go to the factory wiring harness on the vehicle. We'll do two places on the driver's side.

Connectors are in two different shapes so you can't get them wrong. Now, we have some white wire from the ring terminal shown here. We're going to take that and peel that back down towards the bottom so we can attach it to some sheet metal down below the threshold. Now we're going to use the self-tapping screw that comes with the kit and run through the sheet metal below the threshold. It's a good idea to go through two pieces of sheet metal that are overlapping to give you more material to dig into. Now, we'll go ahead and take our key connector with the green wire and we'll go ahead and run it over to the other side. We're going to install just like we did on the driver's side. Now all the wire connections are made, we'll go ahead and secure our converter box. We'll clean it up the converter box and we'll also clean off the section of plastic on the inside of your panel. Then we'll use an adhesive to help hold it in place. Take the adhesive and attach it to your converter. Go take your converter and attach it to the inside of the panel. Then we'll use the zip ties that comes with the kit and go ahead and zip tie our green wire to the factory wire harness going across. At this point, our wire harness is fully installed. We just need to go ahead and reinstall all the interior components. After our interior components are all reassembled, we'll go ahead and try the wire harness. We'll take our ground for a tester and connect it to the white wire. Then we'll test the brown wire for the running light circuit, then our yellow wire for a left turn signal and then green for a right turn signal. Now a break signal will be a constant signal on the yellow and green wires. Okay. It looks like everything is working. Now, we'll go ahead and show you how to use it. When you need to use it and run it out to your trailer, just go ahead and pull it out and shut the hatch on it. Just make sure you stay away from the latch on the center so it doesn't damage the wire. The seal around door will compress but won't hurt the wire when you shut it. We'll also put on our cap for our four-pole as well. When we don't need it, we'll go and store the wire harness with the spare tire. Now, we're finished for the install of part number C56011 from Curt on our 2013 Mazda CX-5. .

Nice product. Good materials. Straight forward install. Worked as it should without any fuss. I would have preferred a little more length of the wiring to work with and to stretch across the back of the trunk area however. 91962

This wiring harness was installed in conjunctionwith installing 2 inch receiver Hidden Hitch on my daughters 2013 Mazda CX5. Install was straightforward. I havent had any issues with the wiring harness function or interference with the vehicles wiringlighting. eTrailer has been a wonderful source to deal with. First retailer I have encountered that was interested in my satisfaction over a year after the sale. Im definitely a repeat customer.

Second wiring harness I've ordered from etrailer.com. First was for a Honda Civic I was leasing. I now have an Accord Sport sedan and expect the installation to be as easy as the previous. Just pull some trunk panels and connect plugs to existing light fixtures. I already popped the one side to verify I have standard lights vs the LEDs. Looks even easier than the Civic was. Totally satisfied with the price and shipping/tracking of the order. 200895

I use the hitch mostly for my bicycle rack and it works as designed with no problems.I have tested the wiring harness and it operates the lights on my boat trailer also with no problems.Im happy with the products.

Chevrolet Volt

I haven't tested the flat 4 trailer converter that I bought and installed with an actual trailer yet, but based on the volt meter readings I made it seems to be working. My only complaint so far is with the installation instructions. They told me to remove the "rear scuff panel" (gray molded plastic piece that covers the rear of the trunk) but there was no clue as to how to do that. I found out how via a post to the internet, sort of, and ended up breaking one of the clips that holds it in place in the process. I suppose part of that problem lies with Honda for building non-servicable components (how hard would it have been for them to hold that thing in place with a sheet metal screw instead of one of the lame plastic clips that you can't get at once its engaged?) But since the product itself is car model specific, I think you guys could have done a better job with car model specific instructions that come with it and provided some clue as to how to get that panel off without breaking it. 541352

My wife and I installed a 2" Curt trailer hitch (and wiring) on our 2015 Mazda CX-5. Total installation time was about 2 hours. We didn't have any problems with the instillation of the hitch or wiring. Etrailer has a video link available, which should be viewed before you begin your installation. However, there wasn't any audio with this. The hitch is solid and appears to be well built. Occasionally, we pull a small aluminum trailer loaded with kayaks, or other light items. We have ordered from Etrailer before and feel they are a good company to do business with. 151466

The wiring directions were easily understood and installation went far more smoothly than installing the hitch. I'm 71 and I spent far too much time under my car, twisting, jockeying, using another set of hands, to finally bolt the hitch in place, compared to the wiring, which was a piece of cake job. 146024

2013 Toyota Tacoma

I have a 2013 Honda Accord. I have a small 12' aluminum fishing boat with a trailer. We also have a Tacoma. When I do not have the Tacoma I can't fish, take the kids on the boat, and I can't go to the lumber yard or transfer station because I didnt have a hitch on the Accord. I did some research and saw etrailer. The website was easy to navigate, I was able to choose the right hitch for my car without guessing, and the wire harness was easy to pick out as well. I was told it would be a week for shipping, I got it in 3 days. The installation was pretty easy, take your time with fish wire, but it can be done. The light set up was all plug and play, nice and neat. I hooked up boat trailer, tested lights, and zipped around the neighborhood. Very excited to be able to pull small stuff with the Honda. The price was right, the shipping was right, the product fit like it said, and I am a happy customer! 413571

I am quite happy with this wiring kit! It truly is plug and play!! After watching the video, the install was quick and easy. I only deviated from the install video, where it concerns the ground wire. It says to use a drill and make a 3/32 hole and use the self tapping screw, if you can not find an existing place to mount the ground wire. On the CX-5 there is a perfectly placed nut that can be used, and you dont even need any extra tools above what the kit calls for. When you pull off the plugs for the drivers side tail lights, you will also see 3 10mm nuts that hold the tail light in place. Just remove the one below the brake light, and slip the ground wire over it and replace the nut. 411597

I havent had to pull any more trailers, but I have no doubt it will work just fine, the next time I need to unroll it from the spare tire well!

Very easy to install and works perfectly. So much easier than the old days when you had to crimp/cut into the wiring. Now you just unplug the existing tail light connection, plug the kit module into the wiring harness, plug the lights into the module, and you are done. Takes about 10 minutes. 739118

  • Does the Curt T-Connector # C56011 Work with a 2014 Honda Accord with or without LED Tail lights
The Curt T-Connector # C56011 that you referenced is compatible with your 2014 Honda Accord Sedan if it has incandescent lights. If your Accord Sedan has LED lights then you will want to go with the Curt T-Connector # C56173 instead which includes a wire you will run to the battery to power your trailer lights. I have attached some videos and the installation instructions for both options for you to reference.

  • What is the Difference Between Trailer Wiring Harnesses for the 2013 Mazda CX-5
For the 2013 Mazda CX-5 the Tow Ready wiring harness # 118563 is a powered converter that requires a direct connection to the vehicle battery to power the trailer lights. This protects the vehicle wiring and electrical components from damage. Because this unit uses a powered converter it will have a higher amperage rating (if the trailer has a lot of lights) than the Curt harness. The Curt harness # C56011 does not require a connection to the battery so it gets all of the power from...

This harness actually fits numerous vehicles which is why the pictures in the instructions, linked for reference, may not look exactly like your vehicle. The instructions also list the coupe model but again the application guide goes up to 2012 for the coupe and then includes the sedan, without LED tail lights, for 2013.

  • Troubleshooting Wiring When All Lights Work Except Brake Lights
You will need to check the stop light and/or CHMSL fuses in the towing vehicle. You may find that is causing the issue. You can then check to see if there are separate fuses or relays for the tow package wiring. You can check the owner's manual to find the locations of any fuses/relays. If the fuses and relays all check out it may be a problem with the ground. You will want to make certain both the vehicle and trailer side ground wires are attached to clean bare metal surfaces. Curt 4-pole wiring harness # C56011 does include a protective cap for it's connector. This helps prevent entry of moisture and contaminants that can lead to corrosion. But if you have periods of no towing during the winter you can simply remove the plug from it's mounting bracket and keep it inside the vehicle. This is why in the linked video our installer shows how to route the 4-pole wire out the rear hatch when it is going to be needed. For a bracket use part # 118149 which is a universal...

  • How to Make Trailer Wiring Harness Easier to Unplug From Trailer
I'd recommend using some dielectric grease, like part # 11755. Not only will the grease prohibit moisture from entering the connections and protect them from corrosion, it will make the connection easier to plug together or to separate.

  • Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2011 Honda Fit
They is no reason you couldn't hardwire a brake controller to your 2011 Honda Fit. You will need to start with a 4-way (if you do not have one). For that you would want the # C56011. From there you would need to convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install the brake controller. For that you will want the Brake Controller Install Kit and 7-Way Adapter part # ETBC7. I attached installation instructions and an install video for this product as well. For a brake controller...
