Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located either behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail light assemblies or behind the rear bumper along the frame rail.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2015 Toyota Tacoma

Today on this 2015 Toyota Tacoma, we're going to show you part number C55513. This is a Curt T Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with a four pole flat trailer connector. With this part number, this is what you get in the package. You get the wire harness, a cap for our four pole end and some zip ties and adhesive for the converter box. Let's go ahead and take a look at the wiring a little bit closer. First off, there's actually two T connectors. This one over here with the yellow wire is for the left turn signal.

This T connection will fit between the wire harness and the taillight itself. We also have one for the right hand side with the green wire. The white wire here with the ring terminal, that will go to the frame for ground for your assembly. This box takes the red wire and converts the brake signal from here and combines it with the left turn and right turn signal for our four pole here. Five wires in, four wires out. Next we'll go ahead and show you how the unit's installed.

To install our wire harness, first off we need to get the truck ready. To do that, we need to go ahead and remove the taillights. There will be a bolt here and here that we'll have to remove using a 10 millimeter socket. There's a couple of snap fittings here and here. Sometimes you can wiggle them off, but you may need a plastic pry bar to help work it loose.

Ours is quite a tight fit. Now we need to disconnect the taillight from the vehicle's wire harness right here. When you push down this tab right here, we can go ahead and pull it apart. Sometimes it may help to actually put a screwdriver in there and push down a little bit to help pull it out as well, to get it started. Let's go ahead and set our taillight out of the way for now. We'll do the same thing over on the passenger side.

We'll take our four pole and route it out the bottom using this opening right here. We'll just let it drop down to the ground for now and then we'll do the same thing with the T connector with the red wire. Now since we're here, let's go ahead and make our connections with the T connector to the factory wire harness. Then we'll go and take our white wire and I like to route this down towards the bottom towards the frame, so we'll work the warning sticker past it. Let's go ahead and just run that down below as well. We're just going to let that sit there for now. We'll go ahead and run the four pole wire to the center of our hitch. Let's go ahead and take our four pole wire, run it over the top of the frame and follow some of the factory wire harness and we'll run it to the center of our hitch. Just let it sit there for now. Next we'll go ahead and do the same thing with the T connector with the red wire, run that over top and over to the other side. We'll just simply push this back into the pocket by the taillight. Since we're underneath the truck, let's go ahead and work with our ground wire. We'll go ahead and attach it to the sheet metal below. We'll go back underneath behind our driver's side taillight, we'll attach our converter box to the sheet metal right here. It does come with adhesive. We can just go ahead and attach it to it. You want to make sure both surfaces are clean and we'll attach it to the sheet metal. At this point, we can go ahead and reinstall our taillight on this side and our taillight will plug into this socket here. Push it together until it clicks and we'll put it back in. Now we'll go over to our passenger side and reinstall our taillight and plug in the wire harness. We'll also make sure we plug in our T connector to the factory wire harness and then attach our light. Now we'll go ahead and take some of our zip ties that come with the kit and we'll go ahead and secure our wires. Once we're done with the zip ties, we'll go ahead and cut off the tails and then we'll go ahead and put our cover on our four pole. Let's go ahead and take our cover, put it over our four pole. That will help hold it in place with the safety chain loops when it's not being used and then we're finished with our install. It's always a good idea to verify it's working before you try it on our trailer. We'll take our cap off, we'll take the ground from our tester and attach it to the white wire and then we'll test our brown wire for our running light circuit. Then we'll try our left turn signal with the yellow wire, there it is. Then green for the right turn signal and then we'll look for our brake signal, which will be a constant signal on the green and yellow wires. Looks like everything is working. With that, that will finish it for part number C55513 from Curt, the Curt T Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with the four pole flat on our 2015 Toyota Tacoma. .

I installed the item on a 2017 Toyota Hilux. All the connectors worked perfectly. The length of the wires to the right tail light were just a little short, so I extended them. This may not have been necessary, as I decided to route the wiring high in the frame and very out of the way of everything. Great Product.... All is working well after a year.. 697115

That's my kind of wiring. I shopped around for installing trailer wiring. Prices were as high as $100. ! This kit for my Toyota Tacoma cost $35. I loosened four bolts, drilled in a ground screw. Plug and pull wire and done. I was able to pull the wired to the far side throughout the hollow receiver hitch. Didn't even need the zip ties. Great company. Thanks 600953

Unlike IKEA furniture, this is a walk in the park to put together/install. Would recommend that you get a roll of the flexible black plastic wiring conduit to match that on the vehicle. It makes the job look more professional. Didn’t need extra zip ties, there is enough in the kit!! It worked first time! Thanks etrailer for a good product. 554245

This wiring harness is the best way to go when you want a DIYER kit. Took me less than 2 hours to install although it could have been sooner, just wanted to double check and ensure this product was installed properly according to the instructions. So easy because all the proper connectors to interconnect it into my trucks electrical system was available and matched up perfectly without any hassles and regrets. It saved me the task of having to cut up the wiring harness and shorting the electrical system if things went wrong. etrailer is the way to go! 462205

  • How To Install a 7-Way Trailer Connector On a 2005 Toyota Tacoma
  • In order to install a 7-way trailer wiring harness on your 2005 Toyota Tacoma you are going to need to combine the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness part # C55513 with the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller part # ETBC7. The reason you must combine two harnesses is because they don't offer singular 7-way trailer wiring harness for your 2005 Toyota Tacoma like they do for the newer models. • Trailer Wiring Recommendation for a 2011 Toyota Tacoma with LED Taillights
  • Since you have LED taillights you are going to want to go with a trailer wiring harness that does not draw amperage from the actual taillight circuits unlike the # C55513. Since a custom wiring kit isn't available for your vehicle you would want the part # 119190KIT.

  • What Parts Needed to Equip 2014 Toyota Tacoma to Tow Trailer With Electric Brakes

The linked articles on towing and brake controllers will give you some useful detail on these items and on towing techniques. For a hitch I suggest the Curt 2-inch Class III hitch # 13323; this will fit both X-Runner and non-X-Runner models. The installation instructions are attached along with a video and...

  • Will the Reese Multi-Tow 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connector Fit a 2012 Toyota Tacoma
  • The Reese Custom Fit Replacement 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connector, # 74682, will fit your 2012 Toyota Tacoma if it came with a factory 7-way. This is a replacement for the OEM 7-way trailer connector for the Tacoma. If your Tacoma did not come with a factory installed 7-way trailer connector, then we will need to go a different route. If your truck does not have any trailer wiring installed, then you will first want to install a 4-way flat trailer connector. For this, I recommend the...

  • Using Optronics # TLL9RK Trailer Light Kit on Trailer Towed by 2005 Toyota Tacoma
  • The # TLL9RK kit you mentioned is designed to be used to replace rear stop/turn/ taillights and the wiring on a small trailer. The kit features a 4-pole flat trailer connector designed for use with a 4-pole connector installed on a vehicle. If your Tacoma has a factory installed 4-pole connector, it should be converted already. If not, the Curt # C55513 trailer wiring harness would be a plug and play option that would plug inline with the factory connections behind the drivers and passenger...

  • Parts Needed to Install a Brake Controller and 7-Way in a 2013 Toyota Tacoma
  • You are on the right track. To install a brake controller in your 2013 Toyota Tacoma will first require a 4-way like the part # C55513 and then the # ETBC7 to convert it to a 7-way so that you can install the # 90885 brake controller. There isn't an plug in adapter available for your truck. To prevent the trailer from draining your truck battery you can unplug the trailer connector or you can install an isolation solenoid like part # TR118665.

  • Can a Trailer with a 5-Way Attach to a Vehicle with a 4-Way
  • A 5-way from a trailer will attach directly to a 4-way like what is on the part # C55513 that you referenced. The fifth pin will just hang off of the edge of the 4-way and wouldn't be active. If you are looking for an adapter to go from a 4-way on your vehicle to a 5-way you would need the part # 20036.

  • Parts Needed to Re-Wire European Trailer to RV-Style Trailer Wiring
  • Thank you for the photo of your trailer's European wiring. You will be best served by replacing the Euro style connectors on your trailer to the RV-type. We do not offer Euro style wiring harness kits for vehicles. The part you referenced, adapter # 118710, adapts a European vehicle to a 4-pole type connector but does not adapt the trailer to match U.S. wiring. Euro wiring has every function on a separate wire; while here in the U.S. trailer wiring combines the stop and turn signals. The...

  • 4-Way Recommendation for 2015 Tacoma with 7-Way
  • For what you are wanting to do the # C55513 will work. It installs by plugging inline with the factory taillight connectors of your 2015 Toyota Tacoma and will give you a 4-way that you can then use for your LED light bar. It's only listed as for "vehicles without a 7-way" because typically if you had a 7-way this wouldn't be the solution you'd be looking for. Since this bypasses all of the factory trailer wiring of your vehicle it will install and work great.
