Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area. You will have to remove interior trim paneling to access the connection point. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, insert the included 10-amp fuse into the in-line fuse holder.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plug on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - C55370 Review

Today we are going to be taking a look at the Curt T-connector vehicle wiring harness with a four pull flat trailer connector. It's part number is C55370. This product is going to fit certain years and models of the Subaru Tribeca, Forester, Outback Wagon and Legacy. It's going to provide your 4-way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle and empower your trailer's signal lights. This is compatible with 5-pull, 6-pull and 7-pull adapters. Those adapters are sold separately.

The benefit of a system like this is it's designed to connect quickly and easily, you do not have to worry about cutting or splicing any wires. All you have to do is locate the connection point in your rear cargo area, follow the instructions these are very detailed they are going to tell you exactly where that connection point's located. Once you've found that connection point simply just plug in your connector, the connectors are going to perfectly fit together. They are going to snap lock for a nice tight secure fit. Once you have that connected your going to see here the red wire has a fuse holder box included. And it's going to come with a 10amp fuse so you would simply plug in the connector and install the included 10amp fuse inside the fuse holder right there and close over the protective cap for that fuse. Once your install is complete the connector- talking about the 4-way flat connector is going to be stowed in an out of a way location within your rear cargo area. The black box right here this is going to be your tail light converter, it's going to insure that your vehicles wiring matches that of your trailers. Now the powered modules going to connect directly to the battery through the wiring to avoid overloading the vehicles electrical system.

It's constructed using surface mount technology for consistent reliable performance. What that means is it's going to maximize your trailer light yield and intensity while producing minimal heat. It's also going to insure superior operation even in rough road conditions. You see here we've got plenty of wiring, that's all bundled up for the 4-way flat connector that way we can extend the connector out the back of the vehicle and make our connections as necessary. But here on the connector itself it's going to have a 4-way flat dust cap that way we can protect our connection points when our connector is not being used. The maximum amperage for the stop and turn lights is going to be 3amps per circuit. And for the tail lights we're looking at 6amps per circuit.

Were always going to recommend that you use a small amount of dielectric grease on all electrical connections to help prevent an corrosion for being able to settle in. If you don't have any of that dielectric grease you can find that here on our website as well it's going to be sold separately. But again with this part number you're going to get everything you need for a full insulation including the 10amp fuse, you're going to get detailed instructions, you're going to get some double sided adhesive tape that way you can mount your tail light converter to a nice clean out of the way location. And your going to get some zip ties that way you can secure any excess or slack in the wiring that you may have, makes for an overall cleaner appearance for your installation. That's going to do it for today's review of part number C55370. This is the Curt T-connector vehicles wiring harness with the 4-pull flat trailer connector.

So far everything worked out. Shipment took 3 days instead of 2, but was happy as many packages were delayed longer because of the storm. Thank you for getting it out the same day as I ordered. Installation went well and was just as your video described. Will test it this afternoon when I pick up the trailer. Even in 10 deg F weather, the installation went very easy. Good thing, finger tips were cold! 116065

The product works but it is always drawing power. I need to unplug it from the cars wiring harness when I do not have a trailer attached. (the plug connecting the "circuit box" to the cars wiring harness.) At night when the car is parked (completely turned off) and a trailer hooked up to the wiring, you can see the tail lights glowing with a faint light. This should not happen. This is a replacement harness for one that I left plugged into the car all the time. It stopped working unexpectedly and I had to order a replacement. The circuit box had swelled probably by 10% to 15% in size. It happened after warranty so I paid for it hoping that it was a fluke. I would not order this product again. 259312

I'll start off and say that this product looks and feels five star, but I'm docking it one because the installation docs and video are very mismatched and conflictive. The one-page paper installation doc was barely applicable, while the video was much, much better. Use it! Pulling out the few pieces of the car necessary to gain access to the OEM plug was relatively easy. Where things got messy was where to actually put the "control" block for this thing. The video shows a self-adhesive backing which was not present. There are included zip-ties but no really good place to use them. I didn't want to leave it loose in there to become yet another rattle in the car, so I ended up securing it with that foil tape used for duct-work. It seems to have done the trick. Routing the cable was easy, and I dropped it under the spare tire and through a grommet, resealing it with silicone when I was done. I'd have loved to see some kind of cable management included for under the car and around the hitch, rather than the four independent wires being just ad-hoc wrapped around things. Electrical testing worked flawlessly, and all outputs were signaling correctly. 529224

Having already purchased two trailer hitches several years ago for my Tribeca and Forester to support our bike racks, it was natural to return to such a superb company to purchase a wiring harness connector and lighting kit for our new utility trailer. I had cursorily enquired at the local auto parts store what I would pay for those two items and the clerk cheerfully told me he could have the products shipped to the store within two weeks for $90.00 including shipping. When I told him e-trailer would have it to my house in three days for only $68.00 including shipping, he just shrugged his shoulders and closed out of his catalog screen. True to their word, e-trailer had the two parts to my house in three days, and this weekend I will begin the clean up of the utter destruction in our woods caused by a hellacious Maine winter. 110 inches of snow caused more damage than we have seen in years. Thanks, e-trailer, for providing us with such quality service for our Subarus and our new(used) utility trailer 191270

Plugged it in, i have lights!! My 02 Forester came with a harness, but when i plugged it into my trailer there were no lights on the right side. I emailed George, got some very helpful diagnostic help, and determined the old harness was faulty. Ordered the new one, plugged it in, viola...good as new :) cant say enough good things about etrailer.com, but i will add that EVERY online business should operate this way. 203142

Product arrived on time and was very easy to install. My hook up was right where "etrailer" said it would be and the video made it as simple as plug and play. I hooked it up the day I received it and within 17 minutes I was loading my trailer with deer stands and heading to the woods. The product was perfect in function, price and ease of install. Will definitely use "etrailer" again. Thank you, John 147546

This harness replaced a Draw-Tite one that failed after about 4 years of occasional use. I'm hoping this one, with revised circuitry, lasts longer. It was trivial to install, as it has the correct pin connector for my Forester. In contrast to the previous harness, it has a dust cover and a 10 amp fuse. It worked fine on a 200+ mile drive (including the load for a camera I use for a rearview in my travel trailer). 212343

This harness still works perfectly. Like others who bought it, I keep the wiring inside my forester when not in use, rather than mounting the external portion of the connector to the receiver hitch.

Great product. This took under 5 minutes to install. The Forester 2006 had the electrical connector under the floor tray on the passenger side at the very rear under the taillight hidden by a plastic flap. Lift up flap, plug in, then snug the hardware into the side well. You can run the wire and trailer connector through the 1" hole at the rear of the wheel well capped by a large rubber plug so the wire disappears under the spare. 94920

I have a 203 Suberu Forester and the stock trailer lighting system stopped working. I purchased the 4 pole Curt T connector and harness to fix the problem. It took about 15 minutes to install. Most of the time was spent trying to unsnap the Subaru side panel. Once that was done it was a breeze to instal the harness. I really like the product and the good follow up from etrailer. I will buy from here again. I highly recomend this product. 86145

Installed this on my 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback Wagon. Just plugs right in, works great. For the 98 Legacy Outback Wagon the connector is located in the back trunk, driver side inside the small (about 5x5inch) access panel directly in front of the tail lights. This panel pries off easily. You might want to mount the module under the panel that is to the left of the spare tire panel. To remove this panel you must remove the trim around the hold down loops. The connector can easily be fished up to the connector, the module can sit under the removed panel (I carved out some of the Styrofoam support) then fish the flat connector out the rubber plug at the bottom right side of the spare tire well (cut a slit, stretch and work flat connector out) 81164

Product, shipping, website, return policy all were perfect. Will for sure use this site in the future. Only reason i didn't give it full excellent review was because I found my hitch cheaper two on 2 other sites. That being said those sites didn't have the amount of reviews etrailer did which further explained the ease of install by customers....and gave me that desired warm and fuzzy feeling when ordering from the World Wide Web :) Wiring installation instructions complete with pictures made me feel like superman with a phd. Well done etrailer. Well done. 128229

Box arrived with a couple holes torn and hitch hanging out one corner, but l accepted it hoping for the best. Installed hitch and wiring harness by myself in about 2 hours from start to finish... probably could have done it faster with help, starting the bolts was frustrating but doable nonetheless. Product seems well made, no complaints there. Dealing with Etrailer has been a good experience so far and will most likely be a returning customer. Attached pic of hitch hiding under bumper, just how l like it! 124424

The wiring harness/trailer plug worked great, no problems except for the installation instructions. I had to look elsewhere for instruction on how to get to my particular vehicle's built-in plug. The included instructions were not wrong, just too vague. A link to a website with more specific instructions would have been nice. Delivery was quick. 110409

Very easy to install. When checking with volt meter, I was surprised to see a base voltage present at the plug between the individual connections and the ground. Still, the trailer is functioning as it should. 74591

After years of individual wire splicing connections for trailers, I am still amazed how easy this was and that it works so well. I think of this every time I connect it up to use.

We found the socket for the wiring harness, but like others, found the directions for routing the wire impossibly incomplete. There may be a hole to feed the lighting connector thru, but neither of us could find a logical one to use without enabling water to seep in. 517096

Comments

The manufacturer specifically designed the harness so the connector would be deployed from the interior of the vehicle when needed. This way, the connector is protected from damage when its not being used. The rear hatch of your vehicle has weatherstipping thats thick enough that the wire for the trailer connector wont be damaged as long as you avoid the latch area.

etrailer was quick and easy to buy, but impossible after delivery to get any response. There was no factory clip in my year of forester, and the harness is useless to me. 513859

Comments

I spoke with the folks at Curt, as well as the manufacturer of the other brand of wiring harness that also fits your vehicle. According to my research, all models of the 2000 Subaru Forester will have the connector for the tow wiring harness. The challenge is in finding it. Subaru is known for varying the location of the plug, so the fact that youre having difficulty locating it isnt surprising. The plug is supposed to be located on the passenger side of the spare tire well. Its white in color, and could be covered with blue tape. Try lifting the carpet to the right and left of the spare tire well or under the threshold. An alternative spot to check is behind the side bulkhead panels on either side of the cargo area as if you were accessing the back of the taillight assemblies. In our experience, with Subaru vehicles, 90 of the time the connector is where its supposed to be, but the other 10 of the time, it can be harder to find.

  • Trailer Wiring Recommendation for 2006 Subaru Outback Wagon
  • She would first need to start with a 4-way on her 2006 Subaru Outback. For that the part # C55370 would be what she would need. Then to convert it to a 7-way you would want the part # 37185. The 4-way would plug into this and then the black wire of the adapter would get ran back to the positive post of the battery through a breaker like part # 9510. That's all that would be needed for the charging circuit to be complete.

  • Trailer Wiring Harness for a 2006 Subaru Tribeca
  • Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector Item # C55370 is indeed a confirmed fit for the 2006 Subaru Tribeca. This harness fits a few different Subaru vehicles but we haven't had a Tribeca in to make an installation video. But the manufacturer has tested it on a Tribeca. The video I have linked can be used as a guide since it is a different model and installation will be a bit different. I have also linked the instructions for you.

  • Can a Trailer Connector be Routed Under a 2011 Subaru Tribeca
  • The wiring harnesses like # C55370 for the 2011 Subaru Tribeca are meant to be stored in the vehicle cargo area and then pulled out the back with the rear hatch closed on it (the weatherstripping on the vehicle will protect it) when you need it. In order to route it down under the vehicle you will need to find a grommet or some exit point at the lowest point in the cargo area. If there is no grommet or you find one that is not large enough you will have to drill through the bottom of...

  • Can the 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness be Routed Under a 2008 Subaru Tribeca
  • On the 2008 Subaru Tribeca you will either need to stow the 4-Way in the cargo area and pull it out of the rear hatch and shut the hatch on the wiring (the weather stripping will protect it, stay away from the locking mechanism) OR you will have to drill through the bottom of the cargo area if no other options are available. Be sure to seal up the hole after you are finished to keep out fumes and moisture.

  • Wire Loom and Wire Loom Clamp for Routing Power Wire for 7-way install on a 2003 Subaru Forester
  • You are on the right track with all of the products you are planning on purchasing to install the Prodigy RF brake controller part # 90250 and then also leave the option to use a different brake controller in the future. For wire loom I would go with 1/4 inch loom like part # 7509-10 sold in 10 foot sections, and then to secure the loom you could either use zip ties (this is what I did on my car) or you could use the Metal Loom Clamp # A0250 for a more permanent solution.

  • Parts Needed to Convert 4-Pole Wiring to 7-Way on 2007 Subaru Forester
  • We can help you convert your Forester's 4-pole flat type trailer wiring to a 7-way blade style to match the connector on your new trailer that has electric brakes. Once you have a 4-pole installed, such as Curt # C55370 or Tow Ready # 118461, you can convert that to a 7-way using our # ETBC7 brake controller installation kit. This includes everything needed to install the included 7-way trailer socket on the Forester and allow you to install a brake controller like the popular and easy-to-use...

  • Troubleshooting 4-Pole Trailer Wiring Harness on 2008 Subaru Outback Wagon
  • Thank you for your purchase of towing components for your 2008 Subaru Outback Wagon including Curt wiring harness # C55370. The yellow wire on this 4-pole harness carries both turn and brake light signals for the left-side light. Since your harness' left side output is always solid (it does not blink) then this suggests that the harness is damaged. Please note that we do offer a custom-fit harness for the 2008 Outback Wagon (as long as it is not the Sport edition), part # 118461...
