Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels in your rear cargo area.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - C55341 Review

Today we're going to review part number C55341. This is the CURT t-connector vehicle wiring harness with the four-way flat trailer connector. This is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 1996 to 2002 Toyota 4Runner vehicles. Now what I do like to recommend on any custom fit part is you want to go to our website, use our fit guide. Put in your year and model vehicle and it will show you if this will work for your application. Now this wiring harness will provide this four-way flat trailer connector right here, the back of your vehicle to power your trailer's signal lights.

Does connect very quickly and easily. There's no cutting or splicing of wires. Basically you just use these plug-in t-connectors, locate your connection points in the rear cargo area, and plug them in. Attach your ground wire and then you'd be ready to go. Now it does include this taillight converter, which is this black box right here. This converter is to ensure that your vehicle's wiring will match that of the trailer you're connected to.

This converter is constructed using SMT technology, which is surface-mount technology. This technology on the inside of this converter will give you consistent, reliable performance. It will also maximize your trailer light yield and intensity, and it produces minimal heat. Also gives you superior operation in any rough road conditions. Does come with this nice dust cap for the four-way. You can just install that onto your four-way.

When you're not plugged into the trailer, you're just storing the wire away. You can put this dust cap on it. It protects those terminals from any of the elements or from any damage. Now this part is made in the USA. Comes with everything shown here on the table: set of nice detailed instructions, some cable ties to take up any slack in wiring, piece of double-faced tape for attaching your converter down, and a grounding screw. Now I'm going to show you in a minute how this all attaches. A few specs on this harness.

The maximum amperage for the stop and turn light circuit is three amps per circuit. For the taillight circuit is seven and a half amps total. Basically, when you go to install this, what you'll do is go to the rear of your vehicle in the rear cargo area, and you'll access the interior trim panels in that rear cargo area. What you'll do is start on the passenger side and you'll use this t-connector. It has the green wire on it. The shorter wire you can see. What you'll do is unplug your connector on the passenger side, plug this inline to that. Then what you'll do is go this length of wire you can see with the t-connector on it and the ground wire. This will run over to the driver side. The yellow wire is for the driver side. You'll do the same thing behind the interior trim panel. You'll attach this inline to the connector. Now on this side you do want to also make sure you attach this white wire with the eyelet. That is for your ground. What you can do is attach it if there's a ground nearby. If there isn't, they include this grounding screw that you can drill a hole and attach your ground to. The other thing you want to do is take this double-faced tape, peel it off, put it on the bottom of this converter. Attach this converter to a nice flat surface so it doesn't move around. Also, you can use the tape, and they even give you some extra cable ties that you could actually secure it also down with. Once that's all installed, what you'll do is run this length of bonded wire out the back. Then again, just go ahead and plug it into your trailer and it will supply the lighting, signal lights, on your trailer. You'll be all ready to go. That should do it for the review on part number C55341. This is the CURT t-connector vehicle wiring harness with the four-way flat trailer connector.

My '96 4Runner hasn't had operating trailer lights for a little while. The company that repaired it last did not place the control box in spot where the elements could do no harm. Winter weather and moisture caused a short and there you go. No lights. Toyota dosn't make a replacement part any more. Your C55341 was the ticket. After I removed all the old wiring and spare tire which needed air by the way. I was able to do a simple pulg and play and feed the four-pole connector thru the channel like OEM. Ran a meter test. Plugged into the trailer connector everything works as it should. Thanks for the hook up. 227680

We have a '98 4runner and needed to rent a trailer but our trailer blinkers were not working. I ordered this wiring harness and replaced the old one. We tested it and it works great! The product was incredibly easy to install (took about 30 minutes) and comes with great instructions. Thanks for continuing to make this product for those of us with old cars!! 683350

This unit was replacing a dealer installed unit from 20 years ago that recently died. Pretty easy to fit even for a non mechanic like me! It really was plug and play. The only tricky part was getting the old harness connectors off. I guess after 20 years they had welded themselves together nicely. Once that was done, the rest was straightforward. Thanks Etrailer! 543746

I purchased this item to replace a failed original equipment unit in a Toyota 4Runner. This product is an easy to install plug in device. It is rated to handle more current than the original unit & has worked well since installation. 324602

It has been a year. The 4Runner tows intermittently. No problems with trailer lights since this unit has been installed.

I received the harness on Saturday at 1:00 and had it installed and working properly by 3. Would have been quicker if I had followed instructions on video. I had left and right crossed by using colors on vehicle. Other than my error no problems. 320177

Great product, fit and worked as described along with great instructions. My only suggestion would be to have the final wiring which goes out of the vehicle to the trailer hitch location be able to be "unplugged" from the black control box so it would be easier to wire it through the floor access of the 4Runner as the routing hole is too small to fit the flat trailer connector. In any case, I worked it out and now have fully working trailer lights once again. 297746

What a breeze to install, maybe a tip on how to get the wiring to the outside of the vehicle would be helpful, other than out the tailgate. 285732

2002 Toyota 4Runner

Everything arrived in a timely fashion and, with a little help from my jack, I got the trailer hitch on my 2002 4Runner. All was very well packaged, and I appreciated that the shipping was included in the price. The wiring kit was a different story. I know that you have trouble even within brands and years dealing with different wiring packages and the manufacture of the car is not very good at finding the plug-ins for the wiring harness for the trailer (I went to Toyota and the parts man could not find it). I finally took it to a body repair guy since I knew that I would break some of the interior paneling if I tried to take it out. Sure enough, it was conveniently located--but no one, not the manufacturer of the wiring harness or Toyota could tell me where to look. It is now in place, after two or three days of periodic hassle, and working fine. The Customer Service for e-Trailer is another matter. I am not telling you all something that the company does not know. The help lines are so swamped that the don't call you back, even though the people I finally did talk to tried to help. They even encouraged me to send pictures of the plug-in point I found--except, surprise, surprise--the website rejected my e-mail with the picture because the inbox was 'full.' eTrailers needs more employees--and needs to pay them more so that they don't get frustrated with their jobs and move on. But, all in all, despite the hassle with communication, it was a good experience. 255358

Do you have a question about this Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring?

  • Comparing Curt and Tow Ready Trailer Wiring Harnesses for a 2001 Toyota 4Runner
  • There is not much difference at all between Tow Ready harness # 118341 and Curt harness # C55341. Both install the same way and work the same way. The Curt harness is rated a little higher at 3 amp per circuit for stop/turn lights and 7.5 amps for tail lights. The Tow ready harness is rated for 2.1 and 4 amps. The way the internal parts are arranged is a little different as well. The Curt converter has all the bips and bops attached to one side of the circuit board. The Tow Ready harness...

  • Trailer Wiring Harness Recommendation for a 1999 Toyota 4Runner
  • If I were you I would go with the Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring # C55341. This isnt one of the wiring harnesses you referenced but I believe it would be your best choice because of how easy it would be to install and because it would be exactly what you need to provide you with a functioning 4-way at the rear of your 1999 Toyota 4Runner. The Curt Circuit Protected Converter # C56175 that you referenced is also a viable option but it would require you to cut and splice into the trailer...

  • Thank you for your recent purchase of a Curt wiring harness # C55341 from etrailer. The ground wire connection, which you note you have already re-checked, would indeed be my first suspicion based on the harness' behavior you describe. It can often happen that a weak ground will let just enough current to pass to allow some lights to work but not others. Turn signals, since they do not remain on at all times, draw less current and may often be the function that works while a function...

  • Parts Needed to Add a 7-Way Trailer Connector and Brake Controller to a 1999 Toyota 4Runner
  • To add a 7-Way trailer connector to your 1999 Toyota 4Runner it will need to be hardwired in. The first step to accomplish this is to install the 4-Way, # 118341 or # C55341. Either one will work. Then to add the 7-Way and wiring to install a brake controller you will need # ETBC7. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation for you. For a brake controller I recommend the P2 # 90885 because it is easy to set up and use and it is reliable.

  • Troubleshooting 4-Way Flat Trailer Wiring That Blows Running Light Fuse in 1996 Toyota 4Runner
  • The problem with your running light fuse blowing as soon as you turn on the 4Runner headlights could be caused by any of several problems.
