Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area. The specific location for your vehicle is indicated in the included instructions.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plug on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2008 Honda Pilot

Today on our 2008 Honda Pilot, we'll be installing the Curt T-Connector Direct Fit Wiring Harness with four-pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number C55336. First, we'll open up the rear hatch. Then we're going to open up the rear storage compartment and remove the rear threshold. Now we're going to underneath the threshold and pop it up. I'll go ahead and pull the weather stripping back then you can use a flat bladed screwdriver or if you have an interior trim panel tool to get underneath and release the fasteners as we work across. Here you can see the fasteners that we freed. If any of them get left inside the attachment point, we'll simply remove it and put it back into the threshold. Here on the back edge of the inner storage compartment, we can push it forward and locate the manufacturer's tow port.

To gain easier access to it, we can go ahead and pop it free just like the fasteners that are used to the hold the rear threshold. Next, we'll bring in our Curt wiring harness, we'll see the gray plug that comes from the converter box, we'll match with the manufacturer's tow port. Once we lock the connectors in place, we'll need to mount the converter box. To mount this converter box, we're going to use a two-way adhesive that's provided with the install kid. The adhesive is two-sided, so we'll remove one side and attach it to the converter box and then the other side will attach here between the rear body of the vehicle and storage compartment. When attaching it, we're looking for a clean, flat surface. Once we have it in place, we'll firmly press it in position and then reinstall the wiring. We'll take our four-pole plug and route it here into the storage compartment. Now we can go ahead and put our threshold back in place. Once we have the threshold back in place, we can go ahead and close the cargo compartment and the rear hatch. Next we'll go through operation of our new four-pole connector and test it to make sure it works.

For operation we'll simply open up the rear hatch, open up the storage compartment, take our four-pole harness, run it out over the threshold, staying away from the rear hatch as the wire being pitched in the hatch can't harm it. However, the weather stripping is thick enough that we can simply close the rear hatch on it. Then once we're finished using the four-pole connector, we simply open up the rear hatch and storage compartment and store it back here. Now for testing our new four-pole harness, we'll simply take the harness and use our test light. To use our test light, we'll simply take our ground clamp and put it on the white wire terminal, testing the brown wire terminal next to our white wire terminal as our running light circuit, the yellow wire will be our driver's side turn signal and brake. The green wire terminal will be the passenger side turn signal and brake. Now we know our four-pole connector works, we're ready to hit the road. That does it for the install of the Curt T-Connector Direct Fit Four-Pole Wiring Harness Part Number C55336 on our 2008 Honda Pilot.

Great hitch! Easy to install and has held up great over the last year. I use it quite often to tow my 4 wheeler and tractor. Great price for a well made hitch. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a great hitch. 714927

Installed on a 2006 Honda CR-V. The Honda connector is taped to the wiring at the left taillight and is a relative pain to get to. The instruction sheet shows everything except the 12vdc outlet that has to be pulled out so the plastic cover can be moved aside. That outlet just press fits into the plastic, so pull straight out. When the converter was checked with an LED tester I noticed that the stop/turn LEDs dimmed when the taillights were on. So I built a "real" tester from 1157 bulbs, sockets, and a trailer side connector to match my trailer's system. It did not work at all!! Turns out this converter needs voltage higher than 12vdc to work, so with the car running at 14vdc it was fine. Turned the car off and tested as the voltage dropped back to 12vdc. Worked at first, then one side stopped, then the other. Makes me concerned with how this will work during the daytime when the Honda ELD keeps the alternator turned off. May have to drive with lights ON to make the ELD boost the voltage. 720440

Wiring harness fit my 2006 Honda Pilot perfect. Installation was very easy, less than 15 minutes. I was able to route wires through body plugs and it came out by the spare tire 546311

2003 Honda Element

all worked as intended. Packaged well, etc. Installation easy, all plugs worked with my vehicle, etc. However, one year later, the unit failed, just as the original one in the car did. Considering that it is exactly the same problem, i.e., my left blinker, and left hazard light don't work anymore, I assume that something is wrong with the wiring in front of this unit that caused the original manufacturers unit to fail, and this replacement unit to fail also. I don't think this unit itself is to blame. Very good experience with the company. 561768

Comments
When a trailer wiring harness goes bad especially multiple units, a short circuit somewhere in the wiring on the trailer is the usual suspect. Since the problem is occurring in the left turn signal circuit, Id recommend beginning at the connector on the trailer, and tracing that circuit from the trailer connector all the way back to the taillight. The left turn circuit usually uses a green wire. Look for pinched wires, loose connections, or wires with cracked or worn insulation. Ill link you to some helpful articles about trailer wiring that might also be of assistance.

Product works but did not arrive with 2 way tape, wire ties or instructions. Had to look up instructions on website and go out and buy 2 way tape. So along with the wrong size nuts shipped with the hitch and missing stuff with the wiring it took me an extra hour and about $5 extra.. Aside from that it looks good and functions.. 556608

I'm not sending a photo since I saw several on your site prior to purchase. What I will say is that the trailer hitch installation was a breeze; same with the wiring harness. Time for both was less than 1.5 hrs & that included set-up & clean-up. I followed the delivery schedule & was at home when delivered which was GREAT. This is the 3rd product I've purchased from etrailer & I've never been disappointed. I always look for accessories on etrailer prior to making a purchase. 699616

I have installed multiple “t” harnesses in my time and I was literally blown away by how easy this curt one was to install. Thank you Honda and curt for simplification. Step 1 PRO tip, spend 2 minutes and watch the etrailer install video. Step 2 use the tools they recommend or just do what I did and pry back the rear latch cover with your fingers. The Honda factory connector is just to the left of the rear hatch strike plate. Slide it up just enough to connect the curt harness, tuck that and the converter into the space between the storage space and then put the sill plate back on. On my 07 I literally just used my hands to pound it back in place...I’m not joking I did not use any tools for this install that’s how easy it was. Fully satisfied! 670786

  • Will Trailer Wiring Installation be the Same for 2002 and 2004 Honda CR-V
Looking at the installation instructions on the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # C55336, for your 2002 Honda CR-V, it appears that the wiring instructions will be the same for all CR-V vehicles from 2002 through 2006. First you will locate the vehicle battery under the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Then it's just a matter of locating the vehicle's taillight wiring connector to connect with the Curt Wiring Harness. For your Honda CR-V, this will be...

  • Is there a Difference Between the Curt and Tekonsha Trailer Wiring Harnesses for a 2004 Honda Pilot
As far as how the Curt and Tow Ready trailer wiring harnesses for the 2004 Honda Pilot function and install they are the same. The guts in each of the converter boxes is not quite the same. The Curt harness # C55336 uses surface mount circuitry meaning components are soldered directly to a circuit board. The Tow Ready/Tekonsha harness # 118336 uses through-hole circuitry which you have probably seen before in just about everything. If it were me I would go with # 118336 because we here...

  • Compatibility of Curt T-Connector for 2006 Acura MDX with Wishbone Trailer Connector on Trailer
If your trailer uses a 4-pin connector that has five wires leading to it, your trailer uses what is called a wishbone harness. The running light circuit separates at the connector (rather than separating further down the line) with one leg running down each side of the trailer. The Curt T-Connector # C55336 for the Acura MDX will work great with this type of trailer connector, as long as it is indeed a 4-pin connector. No adapter will be necessary. • Can Trailer Wiring Harness 4-Way be Routed to Outside of 2004 Honda Pilot Instead of Through Hatch
If you remove the flooring in the storage area in your 2004 Honda Pilot to get down to bare metal you may find a grommet through which you could route the 4-Way end of a trailer wiring harness such as # C55336. • Trailer Turn Signals and Brake Lights Do Not Work Unless 2005 Honda CR-V is Running
If you have not detected a short or a faulty ground then the likely issue is that the factory wiring that you plugged the harness into must have some feature that does not allow the harness to be fully functional if the motor is turned off. Presumably though if the motor is off then you wouldn't be moving and the brake lights and turn signals do not have to work. But for testing purposes, that would be a little annoying. You can test the 4-Way further by following the help article...
