Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side interior trim panel in your rear cargo area.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed within the spare tire compartment of your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plug on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2010 Honda CR-V

Today on our 2010 Honda CRV. We're taking a look at installing the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number C55106. Now when we're ready to use our 4-pole flat connector, we're simply going to pull up, remove it from the spare tire area, pull it over the trunk of our vehicle or through the hatch, over that weather seal. This weather is going to be thick enough that it's going to protect your wire. It can start running down to your hitch. Go ahead and close our hatch just like so.

Now you have your 4-pole flat connector down here at your receiver. Now we'll go ahead and open our rear tail gate to start our installation and gain access to the back end of our vehicle. Now we'll go ahead and open up our hood. The only reason we're going to do this is so that we can disconnect the negative side of our batter located right here. We'll go ahead and remove this just for safety precaution before we get started. I'll go ahead and use an open-end wrench to do this, because you want to make sure that you don't use any power tools when you're dealing with the battery.

Use a 10 millimeter socket to loosen it up and remove it. Just set it off to the side, and we'll come back to that later. First thing we're going to do is remove the rear cargo area covers and floor mat, if you have floor mat on the top, and then your spare tire cover which we have here. Next we're going to remove the scuff panel located here. Removing the 2 push pin fasteners and the 2 anchor hooks on either side. Now we'll go ahead and remove our 2 hooks starting first, just like so, and we'll set that off to the side, and pull out our push pin fasteners there.

Pull the center out first. Once we have it popped up, we'll be able to pull those push pin fasteners straight out. We'll go ahead and repeat this same process on the other side, and then we'll remove our scuff panel on the back. Now we'll just gently pull up on the scuff panel to remove it. Once you have it removed, we'll set it off to the side for later installation. Now we'll go ahead and pop up the push pin fastener that right here in the center.

This will allow us to gain access to this back panel and access the vehicle's manufacturer wiring harness. If you need to use a trim tool you can, to pull it out of the way. Now we're going to locate that white connection that's wrapped up in a green tape from the manufacturer. We're going to separate it from that tape so we can make our connection. All right. Once we separated the white connector from the green electrical tape securing it from the manufacturer, we'll be able to make our connection now. Now we'll go ahead and unravel our connector. We'll have our power module here, which we'll take our double-sided tape and we're just going to peel off one side of it. Stick it on to the back. Once we have it stuck on, we'll go ahead and leave the other side on until we find a nice flat surface on the inside to connect it. You'll see that this is going to attach to that white connection that we undid in the back. Push it in until it clicks. We'll run the wires underneath of the 12-volt plug that's already located in the vehicle. Now with our control module down here on the bottom side, we'll go ahead and peel off the other side of the double-sided tape, and we'll adhere this to the bottom side. Make sure that you have plenty of room with your wires. I'll go ahead and use the zip ties provided in the kit to attach that, and make it a cleaner installation. I'll go ahead and cut the tail off that, and I'll go ahead and route our 4-pole wire at the bottom, and put our panel back in place, and just gently tap it to get those fasteners to go in, making sure that the all go in the appropriate hole. Now we'll go ahead and put the push fastener back in the center down here, and I'll go ahead and place our threshold back over the top, making that our 4-pole connection is down in the spare tire of the vehicle. If you need to, you can pull back the weather seal just a little bit, so you can get underneath of it. Push it down into place. With it all down in place and everything sealed up nice, we'll go ahead and reinstall those fasting hooks on the back, as well as those 2 push pins that go down here at the bottom. All right. Now with these hooks, you'll see that it's got a little tab on the bottom. That's going to go in that bottom slot, and anchor it so it doesn't spin on you. Go ahead and tighten it back down and secure it into place. We'll place the push pin fastener back in place. Make sure that you pull up to release it, place it down in the hole, and push down on the center. I'll go ahead and repeat that on the other side. Now with our 4-pole flat connector installed, we'll make sure that it's still there in the center. We'll place our 2 bottom pieces, our spare tire cover back in, as well as our overhead cover as well. Roll it up and stow it away. I'll go ahead and close it up. Now we'll go ahead and reconnect the negative side over our batter terminal. Make sure that it's tighten down and secured. With that fully secure, we'll be ready to hit the road. Let's go ahead and close up our hood. Now we'll go ahead and test out our wiring. We'll go and connect our ground here on the white side or white wire. Then we'll go ahead and test our running lights on our vehicle, left turn signal, and our right turn signal, now brake lights with both. We're all set. That will do it for our review and installation of the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number C55106, on our 2010 Honda CRV.

Pulling the plastic sidewalls out in my new CRV had me a bit worried after watching the youtube vidio. The package included step by step directions including pictures. The instructional pictures were actually pictures of a CRV not a generic one size fits all vehicle. This wiring harness plugged in to an existing connection that Honda had pre wired and it looked exactly like the pictures. 15 minutes tops. It was so easy I had to double check to make sure I didn't miss anything. First time I've ever plugged in a harness, otherwise I was usually under the vehicle and cutting into wires and taping them. 89982

Selecting the proper hitch for my car was very easy. The ordering process was straight forward. The order tracking kept me informed during the entire shipment. Before the product arrived I watched installation videos on YouTube. These made the installation trouble free. Once the products arrived it took me 1 hour to install the trailer hitch, and 45 minutes to install the wiring harness. Everyting is working just as I had hoped. 78526

It plugged directly into my 2010 Honda CRV 8 pin vehicle connector. I decided to route the wires under the bumper cover like the Honda factory trailer harness for a cleaner install. I followed the Honda Trailer Hitch Kit P/N 08L92-SWA-101 installation instructions for removing the bumper cover and routing the wires. The only problem was I had to cut the wires about 6 " past the controller so I could pull the wires through the vehicle panel hole (the 4 pin trailer connector wouldn't fit through the hole). I just spliced them back together in the left rear cargo area opening (see pictures). 700191

Has worked perfectly on my 09 CR-V. Just plugs in to an existing connector as instructions say. I don't use it very often so keep the wire and trailer end of the connector in the spare tire well and run out the bottom of the rear hatch when needed. Works great. 576264

I like the price (about 1/2 of Honda) of this hitch compared to other products. We have a very light kayak trailer to pull so the hitch construction does not appear to be vigorous enough for it's 1,000lb plus rating! It is clearly sufficient for pulling our fully loaded Kayak Trailer (with 3 kayaks and 2 bicycles) but total max weight is less than 350lbs. I do NOT like the electrical connection dangling out from under our rear door!! This is ugly, prone to leaks into the cabin, causes door seal deterioration and very unprofessional install - looking. I used a 3/4 inch drill to put a hole in the bottom of our spare tire holder to route the electrical wiring and connector. The area is a thin steel structure and easily penetrated. To seal it, I put Duct Tape on the inside and outside then coated both sides with the black-tarry undercoat available at AutoZone. My mods, notwithstanding the original installation, cost about $15 plus my time. This installation is in our 2010 Honda CRV and we have driven to FL and back (1,300 miles) with our trailer. It pulls very nicely ...but as may be expected, the CRV's gas mileage suffered. Also, on long or steep hills, the engine worked quite hard to overcome the additional drag (from the high profile) of the trailer and cargo. Although I extended the tongue by 4 feet (to clear the kayak) there is no tendency of trailer sway or bounce excessively and no hitch shifting or looseness. 294464

No problems. My install mod still intact and tight, no leaks. You should consider a better trailer electrical plug install that does NOT hang out the back door seal

Item arrived but not exactly as described and/or pictured. There was no white (ground) wire to be mounted/grounded. However, I have installed in my 2011 Honda CR-V in about half an hour without any issues. Luckily, I have plenty of extra pins/fasteners in my garage. One should have extra clips and fasteners on hand as there is no way you can save them (and not break them) no matter what tools do you use (I have panel puller and clip removal tool), especially is the car is few years old. They just become brittle and break. Also, as others suggested, it's better to route wiring through some existing hole to the outside of the car (bottom) as they can be easily plugged into. I am happy with this item - like many that I have bought previously. 266675

I’ve purchased a Hitch and wiring from etrailer.com for both of my cars and installed them myself. One being a Honda CR-V and the other a Mazda CX-9. If you are mechanically inclined it’s a breeze. etrailer.com also has video’s on their site for help of ease for installation. Also purchased the wiring kit for my Honda and installed that. I’m in the process of ordering the wiring kit for my Mazda CX-9 Very good company for all your trailering needs. Prices are competitive 710784

Ask the Experts about this Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring

  • Is It Safe to Route 4-Pole Trailer Wiring Harness Through Rear Hatch on 2010 Honda CR-V
Some hitches do provide a small bracket for mounting a wiring harness such as a 4-pole flat connector like that on # C55106. However, mounting any trailer connector outside the vehicle does tend to expose it to the elements and potential damage. Water, salt and road debris do tend to speed up wear and tear and the potential for corrosion that can lead to electrical connectivity problems. When our tech installed this harness in a 2010 CR-V, please see the linked video, he did not route...

  • c55106 not working on my trailer 2010 Honda CRV
First, if you are getting any voltage on the white wire that indicates a short to ground and could mean that there is a problem with the converter. But if you are getting voltage just on the brown, yellow, and green wires around 12 volts then it is working properly. I have included a link to an FAQ article that will help you troubleshoot the vehicle side trailer wiring harness. On a 4-Way, the white wire is the ground, brown is running lights, yellow is left turn and brake light, and...

  • Is Drilling Required For the Installation of the Curt Wiring Harness on a Honda CR-V
The Curt Wiring Harness # C55106 you referenced is intended for a 2007-2011 Honda CR-V. I have provided a link to the installation instructions for this particular harness. The wiring harness will not require any drilling as the connector is installed in the inner trim area of your vehicles rear cargo area, however you will need to shoot in a self-tapping screw during the installation. Once you have completed the installation, you will want to test the connection with a test light or...

  • Can Flat Tow Wiring Harness for 2011 Honda CR-V be Connected to Trailer Wiring Harness
That is an excellent question. The difference between a trailer wiring harness like the Curt # C55106 and a flat tow wiring harness like the Hopkins # HM56300 (similar to the Curt you mentioned) for your 2011 Honda CR-V is that the trailer wiring harness sends power to trailer lights while the flat tow harness receives power from your motorhome. So even though they connect to the same circuits, they serve different purposes so they aren't interchangeable. For a complete flat towing setup...

To install the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C55106 you will need to locate the connector in the rear hatch of your 2008 Honda CR-V. This requires the removal of some of the panels in your rear cargo area. It is located behind the panel on the driver side. I have attached an installation video that you can use as a reference.

  • How Would the Curt Trailer Wiring Harness Hardwire to a Vehicle
To hardwire the # C55106 that you referenced you would need to snip the connector off like you mentioned and then wire the converter by function to your vehicle. To determine the function of the wires on your 2007 Honda CR-V you would need to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to determine the functions of the wires. You can have a buddy sit in the driver seat of your vehicle and apply the various taillight functions as you probe the wiring. Once you know the wiring functions you...

The Tow Ready T-One Wiring Harness, # 118427, and the Curt T-Connector Wiring Harness, # C55106, are basically the same harness from two different manufacturers. The main difference between these two harnesses is that Curt uses surface-mount technology (SMT) which is newer technology from the older through-hole technology. The Curt harness also has higher amp ratings of 3 amps per circuit for the stop and turn lights and 7.5 amps per circuit for the tail lights. The Tow Ready harness...
