Installation
To determine where to splice into your vehicle's tail light wiring, you will need to consult the included instructions. Use the quick-splice connectors to attach the input wires of the tail light converter to the corresponding wires from your vehicle. Once you've spliced in the converter, connect the included hot lead to the black wire and run it up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.
Then locate a flat surface inside your vehicle near the tail lights and adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape. Find a raw metal surface to use as a ground point and secure the white ground wire using the provided ring terminal and screw. Finally, secure the converter wires to your vehicle using the included cable ties.
It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on the 4-pole connector to help prevent corrosion.
Because most trailers run on a 2-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on 1 wire - the signals from your vehicle may have to be converted to be compatible with your trailer's wiring. If your vehicle operates on a 3-wire system, which means that it has separate brake and turn signals, then those signals will need to be combined so that they run on 1 wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. This converter will also ensure that your trailer's lights illuminate fully, even if your vehicle has pulse-width modulation (PWM) wiring. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.
This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.
Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.
Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.
Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Install a 4-way flat on your vehicle with this splice-in harness. Powered converter connects directly to battery to reduce strain on wiring. Potted, SMT construction boosts water and vibration resistance. Works with 2-wire, 3-wire, and PWM systems. For my application, a 2021 Mach-e, this required cutting and splicing into the LED tail lights. I went back to the interweb and ordered one that was plug and play and did not require splicing. Yes, there is a video where a guy identifies exactly how to install this particular kit on the Mach-e, but it was just a bridge too far for me. The plug and play wiring works great and was easier to install. The plug and play wiring took about 80% of the installation time, the hitch itself took about 20% of the install time.
The installation went well. The slowest part was figuring out the tail light wiring and labeling them. I had to run the black power feed wire to the battery which is under the back seat. I thought that was going to be the most difficult part of the job, but it turned out to be the easiest.I mounted the module on the inside of the left rear quarter panel near the tail light. Made my connections as per the instructions, and finally inserted the fuse. The lights worked correctly. I then reinstalled the trunk lining and mat and everything was hidden. This was a 2002 Pontiac Bonneville .
So, video left out removal of plastic trays behind each wheel well. A small torx is required.
Per video my wiring on left side is correct Red to the Yellow/Black, Yellow to the Blue/Green. Test tool (as seen in video) shows nothing when brake pedal pushed; brake indicators on tester both light up when running lights are on, but the running lights indicator does not light up.
Blinker indicators on tester are correct.
Have done the training cycle 6 times, slowly.

You will need to double check and make sure that your ground wire is attached to a clean metal surface. If you are grounded properly, and still have no lights, then you will want to test the converter box itself. If you are receiving power to the box and nothing out of the box, then it is possible that you have a defective box.

Hi. Turns out the video for the 2013 x3 is correct, for my 2017. Brake and tail lights on separate wires.
2025 Acura MDX. It would have been nice to have an adapter to plug into OEM empty trailer wiring harness. Instead I had to watch a video on how to splice all the wires into the harness.. End result all is working as it should.
The instructions are basically confusing. Takes more time to try to interpret them than to do the install. We replaced the barrel connectors with Wirefy that have shrink on them for waterproofing and used 12 ga. GXL automotive wire from the battery to the back of the car. This is critical since it is hot to the battery and if abraded can short. Even with a fuse, up to 20 amps of power will short before the fuse blows, enough to cause a fire! The box mounted right on the left taillight assembly. Use spiral wrap to protect the trailer plug wire that passed under the spare tire and out an existing hole in the floor pan. Used an LED to confirm the wires and it all works. Had an issue with the ground, as the existing screw for the taillight assembly was NOT grounded, to my surprise. We sanded the paint around it and that worked. Overall, not a bad setup.
From start to finish.... 5?
Once again etrailer has gone above and beyond. I shopped and shopped and the quality is way better than any other brands. From hitches to wiring they are the best. Everything works... The first time. It's basically all plug and play. I don't work for them, not getting paid by them, not affiliated with them in any way. Just the best experience.
Ordered the wiring kit with the hitch. Everything needed to do the job was included. I thank you for making this project as easy as it could be. As I said before, I will be doing business with you in the future as my needs arise.........
Only took me an hour to install on my 2023 telluride by myself! I didn’t jack the car up, it was a little bit tight but was able to get under it with a creeper. I used the spare tire (donut) to support the exhaust, so no need to tie it up. Mine had a heat shield over the muffler which made it difficult to get a socket on but was able to work one on without removing the shield. I used a jack stand to support one side of the hitch while getting a bolt in the other side to hold it. I used a multi tool to notch out the plastic on the bumper. Check the other comments for the measurement, not sure what the instructions say but comments say they are wrong???
Overall a very smooth install without any major surprises!!
Not used due to splicing requirement into car’s taillight system. Concerned due to led lighting system on car. Will order updated plug -in system like used on previous cay.
A year later and still works perfectly. Thanks, eTrailer. Installed on 2005 Volvo XC70.
The hitch is holding up as promised to handle the weight of a two place jet ski trailer with no concerns on my part. I was concerned on its appearance in the open underneath the car, but I don't notice it. Awesome customer service by Shawnee. Thank you. Have a Blessed day.
Does not have connectors to attach to the car that I ordered it for

Jason, for your 2022 Mitsubishi RVR there are two options. One is a hardwire harness like this one part # C59236 where it is spliced in or a harness like part # 119250KIT that has sensors that clamp around the vehicles wiring instead of splicing in. It is a little more complex to install. I do not have a video install on a Mitsubishi however I do have one on a 2012 BMW X6 so that you can have an idea of what is involved. Please see links below.

Kit had all that was needed to help me install. As with other reviewers, I was not pleased with the blue snap connectors as some failed. I would use something better if I did it again. I would also suggest having slightly heavier gauge wires. But, all else was good!
Tail light converter did not work for my 2021 Toyota Sienna Van but trailer allowed me to return it for a refund
Installed this on a 2014 BMW X3 and works well in conjunction with my new hitch assembly. Although there was not a specific install video for a 2014, there are videos for a 2010, 2011, and a 2017 BMW X3. After watching those videos I was able to apply it to my install. I installed my components on the inside of the vehicle and will pull the 4-flat cable and plug out to the hitch when needed.
Straight forward directions, easy install, product works great. Added a bracket for a more custom look.
The system worked as described. The only hitch was in the instruction sheet. It said "Only PS signal activated" and "Only DS signal activated", and "PMW-ST" "PMW-STT" with no explanation. It would only take a couple of additional letters to say "PS= Passenger side" and DS=Driver side.
Lauren. I’m so glad I checked with your company to find a great quality trailer hitch for my 2024 Grand Highlander. Everything I needed, you provided! Most of all it all fit up just right and so easy to install, with the help of the videos. Thanks so much! My wife and I are making a move from North Carolinia to Virginia. We have so much small things that wouldn’t all fit on the Uhaul. Glad you were there and provided fast shipping and reasonable prices on all I purchased from you. Thank you so much! Ted.
It's probably fine for what it is, but it turns out Curt makes a custom-fitted kit for the 2023-2024 Kia Niro PHEV. etrailer doesn't carry it, at least not yet. I returned this without opening it & plan to order from Curt.
The ordering was easy, it was processed quickly, and it arrived when they said it would. However, the packaging was terrible, the box was ripped open in several places the hitch was hanging out of the box, again just terrible packaging. I'm not sure if the hitch is damaged or not or if all the parts are present. Of course, how convenient this app won't let me upload the photos of the damaged box with the hitch hanging out. I guess they don't want everyone to see that.
Easy to find the right trailer light connector kit, well packaged with easy to follow instructions. There's always unexpected problems when installing new equipment, but I think if I go through the install slowly while referencing instructions I'll be fine. Great online experience!
The customer service at etrailer is the best.
Rochelle was very helpful with all my questions.
Delivery was as promised.
etrailer does it right when it seems nobody else cares if they do it right or not
Thanks

Rochelle is one of the good ones! I will make sure she sees this. Thanks for sharing your experience!
After one year it still works perfect!!! Take ur time when installing , make good connections , run wires in a no pinch place tie up securely a you should be good to go!!!Thanks E trailer for a solid product!!!
I'm sure the wiring is fine. However, I bought from etrailer because the product support was supposed to be great. We can't figure out which wires to attach to. Yes, I've read instructions. Yes, I've used a multimeter and test light. Yes, I've posted in forums. Yes, I've spent hours looking online. No dice. I even had an electrician give it a go to determine what to splice. I'm injured so can't walk, making some direct instructions on which wires to splice more important at this time. I can't keep removing the lights, etc. and reinstalling them when I can't ID the correct wires. I told them this on the phone when I ordered. They seemed supportive. When I repeatedly asked for which wires to splice the response was something akin to, "We don't know. Figure it out."
Two thumbs down. Received great support from a different online supplier.
Installed easily. Kia should have a plug in option so that you don't have to run wiring all the way to the battery. But installed fine, well detailed by etrailer.

I am sorry that this harness was a bit more complicated than what was expected to get installed. I would go with the plug and play all day. Unfortunately, the only harness we have for your 2021 Mach-E that is a plug and play option is part # TK24VR, which is currently on extended back order. This means, that we are waiting, but do not have a date that our shipment will be in, so we took the part off of the site for now.
