Video Transcript for Fifth Wheel Wiring Harness Installation - 2013 Chevrolet Silverado

Today on this 2013 Chevrolet Silverado CrewCab, we're going to install part number 54701-003. This is a 5th-wheel and gooseneck 90-degree wiring harness with 7-pole plug. The first thing we need to do is find a location for it. This is largely personal preference. You can mount it pretty much anywhere in this area right here up towards the front of the truck as well. The 90-degree angle here makes it a little bit shorter than most normal hard wired connections, so it gives it more flexibility as you put it in a narrow spot if you'd like. In this case, we'll put it next to the tailgate area. Here's your tailgate.

It will be easy to get access to when the tailgate is down. You can plug you trailer harness into it. Once we have that situated, we'll go ahead and drill out a pilot hole first. First, we're going to drill out a 3/4" pilot hole, and then, we're going to enlarge this hole with a 2" hole saw. Now, we're going to take the other end of our wire harness and run it through. It will be a tight fit with the wires, so you'll kind of need to be a little patient with it.

We'll run our wire in and let it fall out the bottom. Some models of truck actually have an appearance panel underneath so you have to reach up behind it and pull the wires out eventually. We'll go ahead and put it into place and make sure it's level, and we'll install the self-tapping screws that come with the kit. Get it started for now and lift up the lid. It's pretty close tolerance.

There we go. Make sure we have the wire pulled all the way out, and we'll just let it set for now. One thing we want to do while we do our wiring is make sure the spare tire is out of the way as well. This makes it a lot easier to get access to the electrical connections. Here's our electrical connection right here. Our wire harness inaudible 00:02:12 in between the tow package and the 7-pole on the outside.

There's a little latch up on top here you have to remove. There's also a little lock. I'm going to just use a small screwdriver and push down on the center of the lock to back it off. Then, we push down the tab that the lock is going into when you pull this apart. There. Okay. That's what our lock looks like when it's in place. Take a small screwdriver and just get it started a little bit and then pull it off. Back to our 5th-wheel wire harness, we'll go ahead and route this to our connection here. Again, this is largely personal preference, but I'm going to run it over the top of the frame and down. All right, now we can basically start plugging stuff together. I do like to use a little bit of dielectric grease on these contacts before I put it back together. The grease we're using is part number 11755 from Lubrimatic. Put some of the factory wiring too. The is end, we plug into the 7-pole connector and push it in until it snaps. The other end will plug into the factory tow harness, and on this side, I'll re-install the lock. There side doesn't come with one. We'll take a moment to zip tie out wires now and make sure they're safe and secure and out of the way. The zip ties don't come with the wire harness. You'll have to go out and get yourself some extra ones. Any time you do electrical, you always want to get extra zip ties anyway. After everything is zip tied up, we'll go ahead and cut the tails our of the way as well, and we should be good to go. We'll do one quick test on the 7-pole connector in the bed before we go on a road trip. One little quick detail about the lid, it actually had a little legend printed on top of it so you know what pin does what. Make sure your key on the lid goes on the back side of your trailer connector. With that, that's what it take to install part number 54701-003, the 5th-wheel and Gooseneck 90-degree wiring harness with a 7-pole plug on our 2013 Chevrolet Silverado CrewCab. .

throw a few zip ties in there and you got it all. very well made. much less time consuming and easier than making one yourself. happy I went with the more expensive option the quality was great. a keeper would be nice also for the plug in. I mean the little safety piece you have to remove on the oem plug to disconnect. thanks steve 84966

Received the fifth wheel inside bed wiring harness within 2 days; was packaged well, materials new in unopened wraps. Have not installed unit yet but is exactly as pictured and everything is a simple " plug and play" to connect to existing factory trailer 7 pin harness at the trailer hitch above the bumper. 326785

2014 Chevy 3500HD

Installed on a 2014 Chevy 3500HD crew cab, long bed, dually with trailer towing package but without camper wiring option. Installation was easy, aside from the thought of drilling a hole in my new truck bed. I was doubtful of the 2" hole where most others specify 2 1/8, but the connections squeaked through the 2". I located the new plug toward the tailgate, above one of the tie-down hooks so it's easy to reach from the rear of the truck, but still out of harm's way. My old truck had it in front of the wheel well and a short person had to climb on the tire to reach it. My 5-er's wire harness comes out of the back of the hitch assembly anyway. There was plenty of clearance for the plug and wire inside the bed walls. Once I snaked it along the frame, it was plug and play with the receiver hitch wiring harness. I put some dielectric grease on the contacts to prevent corrosion. A few cable ties and I was done. The only negative: due to the locating it toward the rear of the truck bed, I wish they offered a shorter harness. 150298

The only issue Ive had with the wiring is that the plug from the 5th wheel would occasionally come loose and Id lose a couple of the connections. I now put a velcro strap around the cap

The B&W Hitch and wiring harness I purchased worked great. Did the install myself which was a job but the instructions were good and the video may it fairly straightforward. The wireing harness had to be 100% wire-for-wire soldered into place becaue the original connector on my truck had been damaged and replaced. So the plug-and-play part not working was a surprise but we dealt with it. All-in-all a perfect fir for everything. I would highly recommend both items. Great quality and ease of use perfect. 399060

This wiring harness was very easy to install and pluged into the existing factory harness. The "how to" videos were very helpful also. The outlet in the box is nice because the cord does't have to go over the tailgate and may not reach the outlet on the bumper. The web site was easy to use. Shipping was fast and on time. Don't change anything! 171466

Shocked, Surprised, and Amazed are a few words I would describe the ease of installation for this harness. Literally less than 20 minutes and I am NOT a mechanic...worked great and I would recommend to anyone. Great product! 138337

This harness had worked well for me so far and it installed easily. It definitely makes it nice having a trailer plug inside the box. The 90° end and included spacer work nice in low clearance areas between box and outer box sides. It appears to be constructed pretty well. The only negative thing I could say is the truck end connections weren't quite as tight as the factory but it still works good. 578539

Will try to keep this as real as it gets out there. 2015 F250 XLT Crew Cab 8' Bed Ordered the Reese Elite Gooseneck and Barger 90 degree wiring harness. Received the gooseneck hitch and harness quickly. Free shipping got here in two days. Item came in two boxes. The rails were poorly packaged. Box was basically open and beat to hell, leaving markings on the rails' paint. Didn't bother me, but might others. The pucks were loose in the box and were lucky they did not fall out. The second box with the ball, ball mount, harness and misc. hardware was packed so well it took about 5 minutes to take off all the staples and then each product was individually boxed inside. Wish they would treat the rail box with the same care. Instructions are ok. Used the online install video instead. The video is slightly simplified as getting the nuts on the bolts is a slight challenge for a one man install. I was able to do the entire installation by myself with the exception of the four rail-to-frame bolts. Getting these snugged up to the point of being able to torque took two people simply because the nuts are hidden on the backside of the rail...particularly the driver-side front...which is slightly behind the gas tank, but still accessible. My F250 is factory lifted 4-5" so I did not have to remove the rear wheels, nor did I have to remove the spare tire or heat shield. Lower trucks will need the rear wheels pulled. Installing the ball mounting plate took some doing. Got one bolt on then decided to actually install the ball into the plate from above pulling the plate tight below. I used vice grips to basically keep the plate mounted tight rather than trying to lift it from underneath with one had and bolt it with the other. For me the most time consuming part of the project was getting the darned bed bolts off to lift the right side. Broke the T50 bit they supplied and then two others. Finally gave up and ground off two of the remaining bolts...and ordered replacements. Tip for those doing this on their own, you may want to spray the bolts from under with PB Blaster the day before you intend to install. I forgot and the issue was likely that the bolts were rusted. The wiring harness was a breeze, although I wish a shorter version was available. (Perhaps I missed it). Had to loop/zip tie about 2-3' under the bed. Connecting between the factory connectors did require me to pull the mounting plate. Was a bit tight to just slip the new connector in. Also, working the harness thru the hole in the bed side was a bit tight. Install probably took 10 minutes after getting the holes drilled. Total install time for this slightly skilled guy was about 3-1/2 hours...after the bed bolts fiasco. Oh...and did it all with a cast on the left arm. Ha! Now to see how she tows! 431267

2012 Chevrolet Silverado

Bought this 7 foot harness to go in to my new 2012 chevy silverado. Wasn't sure where I wanted to put the plug receptacle in the bed. Watch the video and it show the installer putting the plug end down low in the lower left corner. If you haul dirt , mulch or gravel I felt this was a bad spot so I found another. Chevy has 3 plastic plug covers in both sides of the bed for a ladder rack/tool holder attachment accessory they sell. I pulled the middle plug cover out which is oval and with my dremel tool I made the hole round to the proper size and fed the wire down the hole and over the wheel well down to the back bumper where just like the video it shows how to make the connection. Mounted in the bed in this location the 7 foot plug lead gives you plenty of room to route and secure the wires out of the way. If you crank down the spare tire its easier to run the wire and secure the wire to different points. My bed has no new holes in it. The plug is up high out of the way which works for my fifth wheel and the plug was wired correctly so all the lights/brakes work like they should. Good deal 51693

everything was as stated in the product info. it was plug and play which was great. the only part that was a struggle was trying to get the 7 ways through the 2" hole that is required to install the new plug in the bed. i eventually got them through with a little force. much better option than splicing together wires. i installed this for my fifth wheel camping trailer. 653777

This is one of the best additions to my truck for pulling a 5th wheel. I do not have to crawl under between the truck and trailer to plug in or unplug my lights. It stays clean when it is mounted inside the box. I would miss not having one.

They both have a Gross Towing Weight of 20,000 lbs, a Vertical Load Limit of 5,000 lbs, and a height range of 13-17 inches. When it comes to choosing which one is better, even though they are both excellent choices, I recommend going with the A20 because it has more features. Right off the bat the A20 has interlocking jaws to secure your king pin as opposed to the Q20 jaw...

  • Recommended Gooseneck Hitch for a 2017 Ford F-350 DRW With the Factory Puck System
  • Since your 2017 Ford F-350 Super Duty has the Dual Wheels, there is another solution for you to tow a gooseneck trailer. Since the factory puck system on your F-350 should already have a center puck for a gooseneck hitch ball all you will need to do is install the Reese Elite Series Pop-In Ball Kit # RP30137. This hitch ball will pop in and pop out of your bed without having to reach inside your wheel-well to unlatch the locking mechanism like you would with the B&W Turnoverball Underbed...

  • Under Bed 5th Wheel Hitch Recommendation for a 2017 Ford F-350 Super Duty Short Bed
  • At this time, the only under-bed hitch mounting option available for the 2017 Ford F-350 Super Duty Short Bed, is to add a gooseneck hitch and use a compatible 5th wheel hitch or a 5th-wheel-to-gooseneck adapter. I highly recommend looking into the B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitch, # BWGNRK1117 (4WD models) or # BWGNRK1116 (2WD models) because you can use the B&W Companion Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch, # BWRVK3400. This hitch has a shank that inserts into the gooseneck hitch and provides...

  • 7-Way Wiring for 2003 Ford F-350 Longbed for Lance Slide-In Truck Camper
  • We do have 7-way wiring harnesses intended for use in the bed of a pickup for either a slide-in camper or a 5th wheel trailer. Harness # 54701-003 that you referenced is a suitable option. This kit plugs right in at your bumper-mounted factory 7-way (which will remain fully active, by the way) and provides 7-feet of additional slack to let you plug in your Lance camper. This harness uses a round U.S. Car connector, as shown in the linked photo. If you need a longer harness use Curt # C56000...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch Compatible with 6-1/2 Foot and 8 Foot Bed with B&W Turnoverball Hitches
  • For your two trucks with B&W Turnoverball gooseneck hitches, you will need the B&W Companion Slider Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter - Dual Jaw - 20,000 lbs # BWRVK3400. Your F-250 short bed will need to use the slider for the sharper turns like getting your 5th wheel parked and maneuvering around gas pumps, but it can stay in the forward locked position when you use your 8 foot bed if you desire. The slider gives you an extra 12 inches of travel to give you turning clearance,...

  • 5th Wheel Hitch and Sidewinder Recommendations for Use with 2015 GMC Sierra 1500
  • Let's start with a 5th wheel hitch for your 2015 GMC Sierra 1500. Since your truck has a very short bed 5th wheel towing will require a standard fixed 5th wheel hitch along with a replacement Sidewinder pin box, as you noted. The 16K-rated Reese # RP30047 features a 4-way pivoting head assembly to simplify hitching your trailer on uneven ground as well as a dual-jaw system for better grip on your king pin. The key difference is the length of the warranty - 10 years for the Pro Series...

  • In-Bed 5th Wheel/Gooseneck Trailer Wiring for a 2002 Chevy Silverado 2500HD with Factory 7-Way
  • There are a few options for in-bed wiring for your 2002 Chevy Silverado. I recommend a 90 degree harness like # 50-97-410 because it is easier to get it to fit in the truck. You could also use # 20110 or # 54701-003. I have included some videos showing typical installations of in-bed wiring that will help.

All of the 5th wheel/gooseneck in-bed harnesses have square plugs for this truck. Take a look at the video I have linked showing installation of a similar harness. If the connector that plugs into the back is round then you would likely need # 54701-003.

If your F-250 does not have the factory puck system then you will need a slightly different setup.
