How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

  • Economically Priced Powered A-Frame Jack that Wires Directly to Trailer Battery
In your price range the best option is the Ultra Fab powered A-frame jack part # UF38-944017. This jack can be wired directly to your trailer battery for operation and will work well. It has a 3,500 lb lifting capacity. I attached a review video for this jack for you to check out as well.

  • Installing the Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Trailer Jack # 38-944017
The Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack - 18" Lift - 3,500 lbs # UF38-944017 can be wired for both the power and a ground to go to the battery, you would just need to add the jumper wire for the ground connection as it is designed to be grounded to the trailer through the mounting flange. The # UF38-944037 has a 7-way plug to power the unit so no other power is needed if you prefer.

  • Recommended Electric Tongue Jack 2017 Keystone Passport Ultra Lite Grand Touring Travel Trailer
Hello Scott, so we have quite a few electric jacks that will be of sufficient capacity for your 2017 Keystone Passport Ultra Lite Grand Touring Travel Trailer. If you are looking for the fastest-moving jack, I recommend the Phoenix Electric Trailer Jack # UF38-944040. This has a 4,000 lb capacity and it will move 6" in about 10 seconds under 1,000 lbs of tongue weight. I imagine that with your camper being 7,500 lbs loaded, your tongue weight should be pretty close to 1,000 lbs so you should...

  • What Does Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack Use as Manual Crank
While we don't carry a replacement manual crank for the Ultra Fab Trailer jack part # UF38-944037 all you need is a 9/16 inch deep well socket as that's what the included tool is.

  • Are Fuses Needed on the Wiring for the Bulldog Powered Drive Trailer Jack BD500200
The Bulldog Powered Drive a-frame trailer jack # BD500200 is circuit protected internally so additional fuses or breakers are not required. The jack should be ran off of a trailer mounted battery and not off of the 12 volt circuit through the trailer connector. Tow package wiring is not heavy enough for the full amperage draw of the jack and it could result in melted tow package wiring and/or a drained vehicle battery. For a jack that was designed to plug into a 7-Way trailer connector...

  • Length of Ultra Fab Powered A-Frame Jack from Mount to Bottom of Foot Retracted
When fully retracted the Ultra Fab Jack part # UF38-944037 that you referenced has a distance of 9-1/4 inches from the mounting bracket down to the bottom of the foot. Fully extended this measurement would be 27-1/4 inches. The foot of the jack is removable as well. I also attached an install/review video for this jack for you to check out.

Grade 5 stainless steel hardware is recommended and the mounting flange has two hole patterns for convenient fit with 2-inch or 2-1/4-inch hole spacing on your trailer frame.

  • Ultra Fab Powered A-Frame Jack Recommendation that Gets Powered by Trailer Battery
The Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack # UF38-944037 is set up to be plugged into a vehicle 7-way whenever it is needed to power the jack. For basically the same jack that would be set up for wiring to a trailer battery you would want the part # UF38-944017 instead. This jack grounds through the mounting hardware and gets powered by the one black wire of the jack that would get run to your battery. Check out the install video I attached for more info.

For an electric A-frame trailer jack that has an outer tube of 2 inches and an inner tube of 1-3/4 inches you would need to go with a jack from Ultra-Fab: - Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack # UF38-944017 - Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack with 7-Way Plug # UF38-944037 Both of these are 3,500 lb jacks that will work...

Yes, if you wanted to cut the 7-way off of the Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack # UF38-944037 and wire the jack directly to your trailer battery you can do this. The red wire would need to run to the positive post of the battery and the black wire the ground.

  • Replacement Jack for 2014 Legend Enclosed Trailer with A-Frame
It sounds like you likely have an A-Frame trailer, so you can use something like the etrailer Round, A-Frame Jack - Sidewind - 15" Lift - 5,000 lbs # TJA-5000S-B which will attach to the 3 mounting points on the trailer tongue and provide you with a jack with 15" of lift. This jack doesn't come with a foot so you'll also need the Footplate for 2,000-lb and 5,000-lb Round, A-Frame Jacks # JF-99, which is designed for that jack. When the Ultra Fab Jack part # UF38-944037 is fully retracted the overall height from top to bottom is 27-1/2 inches. I attached a picture that has several other dimensions as well. The Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack w/ 7-Way Plug - 18" Lift - 3,500 lbs # UF38-944037 most likely has a wiring issue since it will lift but not lower. The motor will be polarity sensitive, so it is likely the switch has failed. I recommend removing the switch and replacing it with the Replacement Toggle Motor Switch for Ultra Fab Powered Jacks # UF38-75-1037.

  • Can I Wire and Electric Trailer Jack Directly to the Truck Battery
You could technically wire an electric trailer jack directly to your truck's battery, but that isn't really the most practical setup. I've seen one guy pull out his jumper cables every time he wanted to use the jack in this fashion, but I can't say the safety factor didn't worry me. Another thing to consider is that the wire gauge used on electric trailer jacks isn't the most ideal for running up to the front of a truck due to the wire length required and the amp draw of the jack motor....
