How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Bulldog jacks used to be made in Wisconsin. Now they’re made in China and it shows. Material is far less robust and the neck below the flange is an inch shorter (3 1/4” vs 4 1/4”) making it unusable on my old Logan trailer. The neck doesn’t extend through the lower brace. I’d give it a lower rating but, in fairness, it’s probably “industry standard” for today and would have worked adequately if the neck was longer. I will have to return it.

etrailer is a great company to order from. I am able to find what I need and the sales team does a great job of communicating information. Carol C. did a great job of letting me know when my order was received, shipped with tracking information and let me know when it was delivered. Thank you etrailer.

by:

Easy transaction, no problem or concerns with ordering and receiving. Recommend.

by:

Item was as advertised, well packaged and delivered on time.

by:

Exactly to Jack I needed. The short length from the collar to the bottom end allows he Jack to retract to a length that it is not below the trailer hitch where it won’t catch on. Something. And bend.

@Ralph We're happy to hear that, thanks!

After owning an old jack for so many years I bought a new jack. I have had this Bulldog replacement for over a year and the jack is so easy to use and does not need a ton of muscle to get the trailer up and down. It still looks brand new and I love the red knob!!!

by:

Install was quick. I love the grey color and works great.

by:

I ordered this replacement jack for my horse trailer after my current jack gave out. I ordered a stronger one and was able to install it no problem. I did have to get a special tool for the rusted bolts but after that was easy. I use a Class IV hitch system and with the new jack is easy to lift the truck and trailer to attach the stabilizer bars.

by:

After damaging my old jack stand beyond repair, I carefully researched the internet to determine what seemed to be the best brand available for my replacement. It became obvious that the most recommended brand was BULLDOG. Upon receiving and installing the new jack stand (along with a new caster), I know for sure I made the right choice. Love everything about it, could not be any more pleased. Far exceeds the quality and design of the old jack stand that I used for app. 10 years. Thanks for this fine produce and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a replacement. Purchased the jack and caster from etrailer.com and here again, can't say enough good about the service I received. Very fast shipping and excellent packing. Thanks very much etrailer.com.

by:

Perfect fit. This gives me more clearance than the jack that came with my little cargo trailer. It also gave me the room to slip on a jack wheel when I need it.

by:

Product was better than expected, shipping and communication were outstanding. Need trailer parts, this is the place to go.

by:

Great replacement jack for my pop up camper! I could not find one that would not drag on such a low frame, but etrailer had what I needed. Since it is an old camper, I had to ream the hole in the trailer to 2 inches, but gained a lot of stability.

by:

Excellent replacement jack for my Carry On trailer. Timely delivery and easy to mount.

by:

Perfect for my application and excellent product. The only issue I had was the original delivery date was not met and I ended up receiving it 3 days later.

by:

Excellent quality, very sturdy and easy to operate. Exactly as advertised. Priced well. etrailer did a great job getting it to me.

My Bulldog trailer jack continues to work very well. What you expect from a Bulldog product.

by:

Extremely High quality replacement for cheap original equipment jack that came with my RV camper trailer.
Easy to use and is well constructed.
My only complaint is that the jack is grey and I had to paint it black to match my trailer. I took time to tape off the Bulldog decal and paint around it but the decal faded in one year.

Peter G.

10/11/2018

Working great. Works like new even though it has been sitting out in the weather. Faded decal is my only issue.

by:

I have an older, at least 4th hand, slant 3 horse with tack room trailer. I needed a new jack as the bearings gave out on the original. The Bulldog was easy to install, and has been working smoothly for the past year. I should have done it five years ago.

Tom J.

I stand by my review from a year ago. If youll pardon the pun, it is working perfectly, without a hitch.

by:

Product was as advertised and delivered in a timely manner.

by:

Love this that has plate so it retracts to the AFrame instead of permanentwheel like my prior one that left the wheel retracted low enough I felt was unsafe, my one advise would be get the plate AND the wheel, plate allows good retraction but not great for parking, wheel gives better support and safety in parking trailer unhooked. Apparently there are no safety chocks for plates if you need.

by:

Product is exactly as pictured and desc ribed

by:

I purchased this product as it retracks much farther than the one that came with the trailer. The old one dragged when the truck/trailer V'ed down when going through a dip. This one gives plenty of clearance and we have had no problems.

Tim M.

6/19/2017

After a year of use there has been no problem with this Jack. It still cranks like new and there has been no dragging when going through gutters.

by:

The jack arrived on time and is installed and works very well. UPS had been very rough on the package but the jack was just fine.

I bought it to improve the retracted ground clearance and it works exactly as I hoped. The service from etrailer and the sales person I talked to was terrific.

John C.

7/28/2020

Great! I really like the fact that it retracts flush with the trailer frame and is smooth and easy to use. The paint is fading a bit but that doesnt affect the great operation.

by:

bought to replace bent unit on Cornpro trailer. P/N listed as a direct replacement but actually was slightly taller thus retracted further - completely up into the trailer frame which eliminates chance of bending it if trailer nose bottoms out in rough terrain as before

I am extremely pleased with this design improvement

1 year later - still like new condition. well designed and works great ! !

by:

Sturdy, fit perfectly, operates smoothly. Shipping was quick.

by:

Simple 3 x 5/16" x 1"bolt, triangle shaped bolt on for the jack.
3 second 2" tube slip on and safety pin for the foot plate.

  • Trailer Jack Recommendation for an A-Frame TrailCruiser Trail-Lite 21RBH
The difference between 5-1/2 inches and 5-2/5 inches is 1/10 of an inch and would most likely not make a noticeable difference. However, if you were looking for the absolute shortest retracted distance you would want the Bulldog Round, A-Frame Jack, part # BD155033. I went out into our warehouse and compared this jack with the Pro Series Round, A-Frame Jack, part # PS1401000303, and found it to be the shorter of the two. • Recommended Replacement A-Frame Tongue Jack for 4500 lb Utility Trailer
Sorry to hear about your jack. I'd be happy to make a recommendation. Since a trailer's tongue weight is generally 10-15 percent of its total weight, you'll be in the 450-675 lb tongue weight range. We have jacks with tongue weight capacities starting at 750 lbs, but I always recommend going with a heavier capacity than you need. The jack (and you) won't need to work so hard to raise the trailer, and it will therefore last longer. The Bulldog # 2000 lb capacity A-Frame Jack, part # BD155033...

  • Replacement 2,000 Pound Bulldog A-Frame Trailer Jack
Bulldog jack # BD155033 would be a comparable replacement for the jack you have on your trailer. I believe the jack you have is one that they only sold to trailer manufacturers. The outer diameter of jack # BD155028 is 2-1/4 inches. Measure the outer diameter of the outer tube of your jack to confirm it is also 2-1/4 inches. If you need to add a wheel, you can use # BD500245. But the wheel is only rated up to 1,200 pounds so you would have to stay under that 1,200 pounds.

  • Will the Bulldog Top Wind Trailer Tongue Jack Work on a Carry-On Trailer
Yes the Bulldog Round A-Frame Jack, # BD155033, will work well for your Carry-On model trailer. The jack has a 2000 lbs lift capacity and a total of 15 inches of lift. The mounting bracket on the jack is usually an universal fit. To make your that this jack will fit, measure your current jack to see if the outer tube diameter is at least 2-1/4 inches. If your jack is not bigger than this measurement then the Bulldog jack will fit.

  • How to Choose the Correct Replacement Trailer Jack With Enough Ground Clearance on Rough Terrain
When choosing a jack for your trailer you will want to remember that the jack is not going to be lifting the entire weight of the trailer. You should choose a jack that exceeds the tongue weight of your trailer when it is fully loaded. The tongue weight of a trailer is typically calculated as 10 to 15 percent of the trailer weight. I would recommend finding the gross trailer weight rating (GTWR) which is the maximum weight that your trailer can support and choose a jack that is rated...

  • Is Drive Nut Replaceable on 2,000 lb A-Frame Trailer Tongue Jack
I did some digging but unfortunately it doesn't look like that nut is replaceable all on its own. I think that is typically changed out with the screw but even then I wasn't able to find anything for a 2K Fulton jack. When I reached out to my contact at Fulton he said that it's actually cheaper to replace the entire jack than it is to replace that screw nut anyways so he recommended just replacing it instead. As long as your jack stand has a 2" outer diameter tube then, yes, you could use the Bulldog # BD155033 in this manner. This jack has a 15" lift and a 2000-lbs capacity, so you would want to make sure that you're going off the capacity of the jack and not the stands when doing any lifting.

The footplate for Bulldog rack and gear jack # BD018520 is welded to the foot and cannot be removed but I do have some recommendations for you. First, take a look at Pro Series jack # PS1401000303. The mounting bracket is very low relative to the bottom of the jack tubes, 5-1/2 inches. You can use footplate, # PS1400700340 and wheel # PS1400750340. The wheel is rated for 1,200 pounds so it would limit the jack capacity to 1,200 pounds also.
