Video Transcript for Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack. This is designed for use on A-frame trailers and offers a drop leg. Part number is JET-5000.Now, the Stromberg Carlson Jack is designed to aid you when it comes time to either hook up or disconnect from your vehicle. The electric motor located here powers the gear, so no longer are we going to have to continually crank the handle up or down to get our trailer attached. Now, the jack itself has a 5,000 pound lift capacity. That's going to cover just about any type of heavy-duty trailer out there. You also see a lot of people upgrading from a 2,500 or maybe a 3,500 pound jack into the 5,000 pound jack.

You're going to get smoother and quieter operation and, of course, a lot less wear and tear on the system. Now, the jack is going to allow 23 inches of total travel. You have 18 from the actual jack, plus we have five additional inches here in our drop leg. Now, to operate the jack, we're going to have a waterproof toggle here on the front. Down is, of course, going to lower the jack. Up is going to raise it.

Now, something that we've noticed, and also we hear from our customers, is that you get good quiet performance whether you're lowering or raising the trailer. Now, on each side of the jack, you're also going to have a light that's operated with the toggle here on the front that says on and off. This is designed to help light your weight distribution connection area or your coupler. Now, on other jacks, you might see three. You see we've got one on each side here. Others might have one up here in the front.

Something I noticed with most jacks out there on the market, this isn't exactly like a spotlight beam or anything like that. It's going to give you a little bit of an aid and help you see a little bit better. It's certainly not going to illuminate the entire area. Now, also on the top of the jack, as you can see, we're going to have a level. Now, this is going to aid you when it comes time to level your camper at the site. It can also be real helpful to make sure you have a little bit of an angle on a trailer to keep things from building up on top, helping moisture and things like that to drain off.Something else I like about this jack, you can see here it's got an inline fuse holder.

This is going to protect the jack from any types of shorts or any kind of overloads coming from the trailer. This isn't something you see on all jacks, so it's nice they've added some protection for us.Now to protect the jack from the elements they're typically going to encounter being outside, we've got a full one piece cover here on the top. This comes down and over the seam being at the bottom to help promote run off, and preventing water from pooling up on the jack and soaking in.Now, we also have an emergency crank handle. This will be for the event that you have maybe an issue with your truck. It's not providing power or battery on the trailers go dead, that certainly happens from time to time. You're able to remove the cap located underneath our level just by turning it counterclockwise and lifting straight up. You can see there's an O-ring that's seated there just to help seal that up, again, protecting the internal components. This is going to slide right down on the shank. At that point, you'll be ready to operate it either up or down depending on your needs. Now to reduce the amount of time that we have to operate the jack up and down, we're going to have the drop leg feature. This is going to give us an additional five inches from the end of our jack there we won't have to worry about operating. We have four holes to choose from. Of course, the first one or the lowest one is just going to be the stored position. Now, to go along with that drop leg, we also have the foot plate. You can see this is going to be five inches wide. This is going to spread that energy out over a greater area. In concrete like this, it's not much of a big deal. When we get on gravel, dirt or even asphalt, this is going to prevent that tube from sinking down into the ground. Now, the inner tube of our jack, our pin and clip and foot plate are all going to have the zinc coating. Those are going to do a great job at resisting corrosion just like our outer tube, which offers the black powder coat finish. Now, whether you're raising or lowering the trailer, the jack has an internal shut off. It's going to prevent you from overworking the internals. You'll see, we'll bring it down. Once it gets to its lowest point, it's just going to shut off. You don't have to worry about it overwearing or heating up the motor excessively. Now, depending on your trailer configuration, there's another measurement that might be important to you. That's going to be from our bracket, or from our mounting flange, to the top of the jack, we've got about 23 inches. If you've got any type of slider or a fold down on the front of your trailer or camper, be sure you've got room for it.Now, of course, to install our new jack, we'll want to start with our old jack removed. When you take it off, save your hardware. You're going to reuse that for the new jack. Then, we need to remove the foot plate down here. Just going to remove the pin and clip and lift it up and off. Now, the jack's outer tube measures two and 3/16th of an inch. You need to ensure you have that type of room here for clearance. At that point, drop it right on down through. Rotate it the forward position and our holes will be lined up. Now, they've provided star washers with the jack. This is to ensure we get a proper connection between our bolt and the metal on the jack. We're going to place that on our hole first, going to thread in our hardware. Now, if you need to replace your hardware, you'll want to use a minimum of 3/8th grade five bolts. You can see we've got our flat washer and our lock washer also on our bolt, want that to go through our star washer. In our case, we've got a threaded coupler. In some situations, you're going to have a nut inside of there. If you do, be sure to hang onto those as well, so you can put it back on.Once you have all your hardware in place, you're going to want to get it torqued down to the appropriate specification. You're going to find that listed in the instructions. Once that's secure, we can return our foot plate in position. Now, to power the jack, we need to connect our one wire that we have coming off of it to a 12 volt power source. That's going to depend on your trailer where you're going to get that from. In some applications, the trailer or camper will have a battery onboard. That's generally the best place to get the power, because it's always going to be with it whether you're connected to a truck or not.The other source, and the source that we're going to use today, will come through your seven-pole trailer connector. It's going to be a 12 volt power source from your vehicle that'll run back to a junction box. This is the wire that ran to our old jack. We're going to reuse this and use a butt connector.Whatever excess you have, you'll trim that off. Going to use part number DW05745 to make our connection. That's going to be a heat shrink butt connector. What it does, it's going to give a superior corrosion resistance. Place that on, simply crimp it down and connect that to our power source, whether you're going to your battery or your junction box. Now, we'll use a source of heat to get that shrunk down. You can use a heat gun, a mini torch or, like you see here, just a lighter. Just want to apply gentle heat, we don't want to overheat it or discolor the connector at all. Then, finally, when it shrinks down all the way, it's going to look like the wire magnifies, just like that. Get a little bit of clear gel come out of the end of it. Plus, you'll want to do that on both sides. Now, once you're hooked up to your power source, you'll just want to let that jack run down. Take the weight off the tongue. As you can see, we're using jack stands for stability. We'll just get those out of the way. That's going to complete our look at the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack, part number JET-5000.

When my original lift failed at only 2 years of minimal use. I decided to purchase something better. While searching websites I came across this unit. I decided to upgrade from 3500 to the 5000 pounder. I am so glad, it is so much quieter and faster, not that speed has anything to do it while your camping. Simple install, completed the task in 30 minutes. I would recommend this unit to everyone replacing a 3500lb lift!! 375471

Very simple to install. Works great. I have to lift my trailer pretty high to get level and the other one would heat the motor up and die. This one rise it with ease. Wish I would have purchased it sooner. The only problem is etrailer. Very poor communication. Promise delivery in 24 to 48 hours. And it took them over a week. 406492

Easy install. Works well even though I am maxing out it’s rated capacity. Wiring on a trailer without its own power source is simple if you know how to hook into the trailer hook up. If not just ask your local auto shop. Great product. 493245

This was a replacement for the original jack on a 10,000 GVW tag trailer. Installation of this jack was extremely easy with the supplied hardware. Wiring was also very easy. The jack is slow moving but it has a big gear reduction to accommodate the 5000 pound rating. This will not be a problem for us as it will only take a minute longer to hook or unhook the trailer. I like the drop leg feature as it makes it more adjustable. The light is a nice feature also as we do some of our trailering at night. 705134

Ask the Experts about this Stromberg Carlson Camper Jack

  • Is Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack JET-5000 Suitable for 2007 Jayco Eagle 314 BHDS
The dry hitch weight of the 2007 Jayco Eagle 314 BHDS travel trailer is just under 800-lbs and even loaded to its maximum 9200-lb GVWR the trailer tongue weight should not exceed 1400-lbs. Therefore the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-5000 rated at 5000-lbs will have plenty of extra capacity. This is a good thing since extra capacity means it won't have to work too hard and it should provide a long service life. This jack includes its own separate ground wire. This means...

  • How to Determine Capacity Needed for Electric A-Frame Trailer Jack
An electric A-frame jack like the Stromberg Carlson # JET-5000 that you were looking at will be responsible for supporting and lifting a trailer's tongue weight. You will just need to make sure that the jack you choose has enough capacity to support your trailer's tongue weight, which is typically around 10 to 15 percent of its total weight. It's a good idea to choose a jack with a capacity that exceeds the tongue weight, as this just allows it to work under its limit which will lead to...

You can use either a fuse or an auto-reset circuit breaker on the power circuit for the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-5000. Since this unit draws 30-amps with a 1,700-lb load a 30-amp breaker like # PK54530 will allow all needed power to reach the jack. You'll use ring terminals # 44-5310A, 10-gauge duplex wire # 10-2-1 and butt connectors # 05732-2. The copper color post on the breaker goes to the battery.

Yes. I do recommend this Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack - Drop Leg - A-Frame - 23" Lift - 5,000 lbs - Black, # JET-5000, for your application. The two biggest things to look at when determining a trailer jack is your trailer tongue weight and the height of the trailer coupler. The Tongue weight is typically 10 to 15 percent of your trailer weight when it is fully loaded. With trailer jacks, the ratings aren't always spot on and you don't want to go too small, so I think this...

Assuming you have a 2" hitch there are a number of options depending on the rise of drop you need: - Ball Mount 3/4" Rise or 2" Drop, Extra Long # D-26 - Curt Class III Drawbar - 2" Rise - 4"...

  • Can I Weld Install An Electric Jack On My Enclosed Royal Trailer
I confirmed with Stromberg Carlson that you are able to weld install this A-Frame Electric Trailer Jack # JET-5000. The 5,000lbs referenced is lift capacity and only needs to lift the trailer's tongue weight. We generally recommend you exceed the required lift capacity to shorten the time to jack your trailer and ensure a long life of use. If your gross trailer weight is 5,000lbs for example, your maximum tongue weight would be 750lbs so this jack would be well in excess of what you need...

  • What Are The Quietest A-Frame Electric Trailer Jacks
There are a number of quiet electric A-frame trailer jacks, although the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-5000 you asked about would not be on the list. That said, you were right on the money with the Bulldog, because their Bulldog Powered Drive Trailer Jack - 22" Lift - 4,000 lbs # BD500199 (Black) or # BD500200 (White) has a powered drive which is going to reduce noise. The other quietest A-frame trailer jack is from Stromberg Carlson, the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer...

  • Recommendation on an Electric Trailer Tongue Jack to Fit a Concessions Trailer Weighing 10K
When looking to purchase an electric trailer jack, there are a few features you want to keep in mind when comparing between brands. Power draw, weight capacity, and maximum lift height will be the features that will be important in deciding on the correct jack application that will work for your needs. With this in mind, the jack that I recommend with the information that you provided is the Ultra-Fab Phoenix, # UF38-944055. The jack has a lift capacity of 5,500 lbs and a total lift...

  • Comparing the Stromberg Carlson Trailer Jacks # JET-5000NG VS JET-5000
All-around the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-5000NG is nicer than the # JET-5000. The bearings in the part # JET-5000NG allow it to raise and lower much smoother and quicker, the size of the head is a bit smaller and the lighting is nicer too. For how similar the price is between the two the # JET-5000NG really is the winner.

  • Recommended Tongue Jack for 10,000 lb Car Hauler Trailer
For your 10,000 lb car hauler trailer, I recommend the Bulldog A-Frame Round Jack - Sidewind - Weld or Bolt On - Zinc Finish - 5,000 lbs # BD1700100301 for a manual jack along with footplate # BD018564. The majority of the weight of your trailer will be on your axles and this will definitely support the tongue weight without issue. If you want an electric jack, I recommend the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack - Drop Leg - A-Frame - 23" Lift - 5,000 lbs - Black # JET-5000. ...

  • How Much Battery Power Is Needed to Operate Electric Tongue Jacks
Your specific battery's amp-hour rating (Ah), its condition and the specific jack in use will determine how many uses you will get before your battery is drained. Powered trailer tongue jacks like the Bulldog # BD500188 and the Stromberg Carlson # JET-5000, as examples from those on the linked page, can draw substantial power. The specific power drawn by the jack depends on the particular jack and the actual load that is on it. The Stromberg Carlson # JET-5000 will pull about 30-amps...

  • Will Air Bags Level 2018 Ram 2500 When Towing
The Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs # F2598 that fit your 2018 Ram 2500 will not keep your truck level when you are towing. They are definitely helpful in terms of improving your overall ride and stability but just are not a substitute for a weight distribution system. The reason for this is the tongue weight is not going to be re-distributed when only using air bags; a weight distribution system is the only option which is going to actively transfer that load and thus ensure...

  • Troubleshooting Operation of Electric Trailer Jack That Only Works with RV Shore Power Connection
If your RV electric tongue jack functions properly when your trailer electrical system is connected to shore power (an AC outlet) but not when it is powered by the truck's 12V auxiliary power circuit then either the 7-way connectors on the truck and/or trailer could have corrosion on their contacts or the jack's motor may simply require more power than the truck's 7-way circuit can deliver. Electric tongue jacks can draw a lot of current when working near their maximum capacity. For...
