Video Transcript for Stromberg Carlson Electric A-Frame Trailer Jack Review

Today we're going to take a look at and show you how to install the Stromberg Carlson a-frame electric trailer jack. This offers a drop leg with 18" of lift and a 3,500 pound capacity in white. Its part number is JET-3555. Now with both of our jack and drop leg in the highest position we're going to have a bracket height of about 32-3/4", so right up here to our flat mounting location it's going to be about 32-3/4". Now the drop leg adds 5", so we'll actually be able to roll that back to about 28-1/4" if we prefer to have our drop leg in its highest setting, and anywhere in a 1-1/2" increment between there. Now with our jack in its lowest position and our drop leg in its highest position we're going to have a bracket height of about 13-1/2". If we reduce our drop leg to its lowest position that's going to subtract 5". Now you're going to have waterproof switches here on the front that are going to control both the up and the down.

Now it's interesting to note that the up means your trailer tongue will go up. The down means your trailer tongue will go down. On the other switch here we're going to have full control of the two lights that we've got on either side, are a nice soft blue light. They're going to light up plenty of space. It's on a 180 degree lens there, so with that it's going to spread the light out over our coupler area and also back if we have any kind of weight distribution setup that we need to manage, we should have some light shed on that as well.

We got one light on each side, which is really nice so you can work on both sides of the trailer. A simple on and off operation with our switch. We're also going to have have a white weather-resistant cover here. It's got a nice snug fit around. Most of the joints and everything look pretty clean. That's going to protect all of our electronics that we've got up here.

All of our soldered wiring is going to be protected by our housing. We've got an external motor here so that's going to help some airflow come across it and help cool it off in the event that we're really using it a lot going up n down. We've got an inline fuse holder here. This is going to protect the wiring on our trailer and also protect the wiring in our motor so we don't have any kind of excessive voltage running through. Another great feature if the application calls for it will be the bubble level that's offered right on top of the jack. As we work it down it will come to the level position, indicating to use that we've got our trailer set properly.

Now the level area also acts as an access point for us to get in in the unfortunate event that we would have some kind of a battery failure. We've got an o-ring that sits right around the top that seals that off really well. We can just slide our accessory wrench right down in. That's going to easily allow us to raise or lower our trailer in that event that we have a failure. Now this won't cause any kind of damage to the motor or anything like that. They've designed it so we can use it this way without causing any kind of issues. Uses just a standard inverted hex bit there. It will go right down in there and really allow you to adjust it if necessary. Place our o-ring back in, line up our tabs, and rotate this right on into position. Perfect. Nice and sealed back up. Now to give us a good long-lasting product, there's a few steps that they've gone through to get us there. First, the cover up here is a molded plastic but it's then painted. That's going to give us that reduced yellowing effect that we sometimes see from white plastics. The outer tube here, complete black powder coating finish so very rust-resistant. Also a very durable finish, stronger than what paint would be. Once we get to our inner tube and our drop leg these are going to be completely zinc coated so we'll have superior corrosion resistance there as well. That's going to keep everything looking good. Now to keep it operating well, use a high strength screw inside here, which does have a clutch that's going to limit the force being able to be applied to it so we won't have to worry about overworking it or overusing it and causing undo stress and friction that will ultimately shorten the life of our jack. Now we can take advantage of the easy bolt-on application sites, or because we do have a nice thick steel flange down here, this could easily be weld-on as well and just paint over those welds to match your trailer and jack. Now we're going to begin the installation with our existing jack removed. That's going to open up the 2-1/4" hole here that we're going to require. Also it will give us a good look at the bolt holes that we've got. Now we want these to be about 3" on center, so from the center of one to the center of the other we want it to be about 3" there. Then we can drop our jack down into place. That 2-1/4" hole is going to allow our 2-1/4" outside tube to slide right through. While you've got a good look at it, your inside tube has a diameter of 2" just so you have that for reference for any kind of accessories or anything. Then we'll simply just drop it right down into the hole. Now with our bolt holes lined up we're going to use our existing hardware as long as it meets specification. That's going to be a 3/8" bolt that has a grade five hardness rating. What we'll do then is place underneath the washer one of the serrated washers that are going to come with our jack. These are meant to go under the flat washer. They're going to scrape or abrade the paint as we tighten it down. That's going to provide us with a really good ground location. Let's get our three bolts started. Now we'll leave each one hand tight initially. We want to be sure that if we need to wiggle our jack around a little bit or move it to line up the holes that we'll have that adjustability. Now with those started we'll use our wrench, and we're going to tighten them on down. Then we'll torque them down to the specifications that are listed in our instructions. That's going to take care of the mounting. It's nice and secure. Now let's do the wiring. First thing I'm going to do is to separate the yellow fuse holder and pull that fuse out. We'll put that in at the very end just to protect our circuits while we're doing our wiring. You'll have a good length of wire here that we'll be able to use to run to either our battery or a 12 volt power source on our trailer. Now we'll run this back through our trailer. If there's any tie-down locations or anything like that we can use, we'll use those. Just bring it back. We want all of our wires to be snugged up against our frame rail so we can use some zip ties or some other hardware and take care of that later. This is our 12 volt power wire that runs from our trailer. This is the one from our jack. We're going to use a butt connector, slide it on the end of our jack wire, crimp it down, pull on it real hard just to make sure you get a good connection, and then we can strip our 12 volt trailer power wire. With that stripped, we'll slide that right on and crimp it on down. Now let's just take our wire. As you can see, I got a little bit of excess from the trailer, a little bit of excess from the jack. Let's just bundle this together. Then we can secure this off to any good connection point underneath our trailer and just bring that down. The little bit of extra that we have here will be great for keeping the slack off of our fuse holder and that here, so just pull that up to give us just a little bit of room there, and we'll zip tie right around the main shaft. Now let's place our fuse back in the fuse holder. Now with that connection made we can just tuck it around here to the back side. One more zip tie should have us all set. Now we're going to put our drop leg back in place. As you can see, the drop leg itself is going to have a 5-1/2" diameter plate. That's made to spread that energy out over a greater area so it's not focused on just the smaller portion of our inner tube. We've got adjustments here for a total of 5" and an 1-1/2" increment as we go up and down. What this allows us to do, instead of our foot pad here being all the way in the up position and our jack having to go all the way down, we can bring this right on down and then pull our bale clamp right around the outside. You'll also notice here a "Stop, do not retract beyond this point." You don't want to go beyond the top of that white line as you're retracting your jack, so it gives you a nice visual cue so you know when to stop. Now that we've seen how it works and how to get it installed, that's going to complete today's look at the Stromberg Carlson electric a-frame trailer jack, part number JET-3555. .

My Stromberg Carlson power jack is still working well. As for all my belongings I take good care of it, that should make it work for a long time I hope...

Customer service is class A, quick delivery, and Installation was easy peazee. Took all of 15 minutes. Reused the bolts from the my old hand crank jack, had to crimp on a battery loop type connector , wire came striped an with a fuse connected. So, after a quick crimp I connected it to the positive lead and let it jack up an down. Now, I've read that the jack is slow, well so am I. I'm a 66 years young female, in no rush, and it's way better that me doing the hand crank dance. 425240

After a year of use, I am still very pleased with my electric Jack. It moves up and down at a good speed. It handles the 700 lbs of tongue weight of our travel trailer with no struggle. It is relatively attractive compared to some others. The white cover matches the propane bottle cover behind it. My only complaint is I wish the lights were a little brighter. They are better than fumbling with a flashlight in the pitch dark, but just not as bright as I had expected. All in all, I am very pleased and would buy another without any reservation. 353846

I purchased 2 of these a year ago to replace a hand crank on a cargo trailer. I wanted to modify the tongue of a trailer where the crank was in the way of loading and unloading a work van. The push of a button, in this case two, is way easier and much faster than old school hand power. It worked out so well, I did a dump trailer as well. Then, a friends trailer. I might be starting a trend. 486187

Great service from etrailer.com. Ordered the jack and a Fastway e2 Trunion hitch on Saturday, and had them at my door the following Wednesday. Got everything installed today and all works great. I did notice that even with proper torquing, the mounting plate on the jack bent a bit under load of my Flagstaff pop-up. Works great...but I'll have to keep an eye on that mount. Directions call for an underplate, which I don't have room for on my trailer tongue. 440543

I had this jack on my last trailer and I liked it. It is nice that it has a level as part of the cover to get you close. My trailer is 5,500 lbs and this jack has no issues with lifting the tongue. I do not like the glass fuse and holder that comes with it. The same fuse holder failed on my last trailer. So when I ordered this one for my new camper I stopped by the auto parts store and got a good quality sealed blade fuse holder. I thought I had read that this did not come with the mounting bolts. It does. I used longer bolts with additional fender washers and lock nuts. Ordering from etrailer is the best. It was convenient, easy, and the price is really good. 525391

I installed this Stromberg Carlson electric jack about a year ago. Installation was very easy (I installed it while hitched to tow vehicle - don't use your stabilizers to hold your up your trailer weight). The jack worked great on several outings last year - great time (and back) saver when setting up. However, we just bought a bigger trailer (used) and I wanted to swap this with the factory electric jack on the new trailer. The dealer agreed it was a good jack but he wouldn't let me swap. Oh well, I'll probably be replacing that one with another Stromberg Carlson soon. Also, I found the best price here of all vendors when I initially shopped for it. 635527

Looks good, everything fit like it should. Raises and lowers my 26’ Attitude toy hauler easily. Replaced original after 13+ years cause the gears were starting to slip. Went to a 3500lb from a 2500lb just cause I could. They need to put a clearer lens so the light would be brighter. Overall pleased with this purchase. 593313

Product was delivered on time. This was purchased as a replacement for a hand crank jack. It took me less than an hour to install this. Most of that time was spent trying to find a 12v power source. Otherwise it would have only taken me about 20 or 30 minutes. It seems to work great so far. The video on how to install it helped a lot. 410885

I love the jack, far less effort for a retiree and the manual jack was starting to feel like it was worn and might slip. I keep the manual jack in the trailer just in case but I had zero problems with the electric jack and used it dozens of times last summer.

Amazing service, ordered the jack on Monday, didn't expect it till the following Wednesday. It arrived Friday of the week I ordered it, now that is great customer service. The Jack was exactly as described, took me about 20 minutes to install and wire. Very nice product, and not slow like some people said. It moves faster than I did when I jacked up the trailer tongue manually. Thank you etrailer for a good product and even better customer service. 330173

Bought it to replace a manual jack that stripped the gears. Easy installation, bolt holes lined up perfectly. Installed including wiring in under 30 minutes. 314108

- JET-3555

Mounted quick and easy. Plenty of wire for electrical hook up. Lots of power even with a full load of water in the front tank. The only change I made to installation was longer bolts to accept washers and nuts to the bottom side of hitch. I didn't trust the taped holes in the thin hitch frame. This was no fault of the new jack. Still working strong. A back saver that's worth the money. I should have bought one years ago! 300979

What a wonderful invention. Caution must be used when retracting. Too bad some kind of stop isnt used. But it sure works good!

Item is well packaged from factory for shipping. Received item quickly from warehouse. Time to install from opening package to lifting the camper was 8 minutes 30 seconds. It took 3 minutes to look at the fuzzy diagram on where the star nuts go when putting the three bolts back into the frame. Be sure to have a 10-12 gauge butt connector or something equal to your application, as no electrical connections are supplies. All in all, I would buy this again and will recommend this to others who might need to have an electrical jack replaced. 198314

Quick delivery. Took 15 minutes to exchange this electrically powered unit for my old crank model. Mine is the 3500 capacity and seems to lift a fully loaded heavy duty landscape trailer with ease. What a relief!! Tired of hand cranking! Nice unit! 182521

Ask the Experts about this Stromberg Carlson Camper Jack
Do you have a question about this Camper Jack?

  • Recommended Electric Trailer Jack Compatible with Coachmen Clipper 17BHS Coupler
  • The Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-3555 has the larger outer tube diameter as you mentioned. I recommend using a rotary tool like a Dremal to enlarge that hole. Another great option is the Bulldog Powered Drive Trailer Jack- 22" Lift - 4,000 lbs # BD500199. This has an outer diameter of 2-1/4 inches which is even slightly larger and this is actually the more standard measurement for most jacks. You will need the rotary tool to enlarge the hole for this one as well.

  • Do All A-Frame Trailers have Same 3 Bolt Pattern for Trailer Jacks
  • Yes, basically all A-frame trailers are going to have the same bolt pattern for installing a trailer jack. Typically the jacks have mounting holes that are somewhat slotted too to help with some variances. The bolt pattern you mentioned having on your trailer is compatible with the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-3555 so this will work great for you.

  • I called our tech contact at Lippert and he said that the manual override of the older style A-frame jacks that they carry do not like to operate if the power source of the jack is active. Basically if the jack is functioning fine with the switch it will not want to operate with the override. You can try disconnecting the power source to see if it will function.

  • Will the Stromberg Carlson Electric Jack Replace a Jack that has a Triangle Mount Flange
  • Yes, the Stromberg Carlson Electric Jack, # JET-3555, will fit on your trailer's A-frame jack mounting hole. A-Frame jacks are all the same size and have the same bolt-pattern. The manufacturers did this so they could simplify the manufacturing process for both bolt-on and weld-on A-frame jacks. The mounting bolt holes on the Stromberg Carlson jack measure 3 inches from center to center.

  • Can an A-Frame Jack be Rotated on the Trailer for Hatch Clearance

  • Recommended Electric Power A-Frame Jack for a 28-Foot Jayco Travel Trailer
  • Yes. A 3,000 pound electric jack will work just fine. Based on your trailer weighing 7,500 pounds loaded will equate to your tongue weight between 750-1125 pounds. Although you can choose a 2,500 pound (see link attached) electric jack, I would highly recommend the Stromberg Carlson # JET-3555 (white) or # JET-3755 (black) as they are rated at 3,500 pounds. I think you will really like the price point! I have also included an FAQ for you too.

  • A-Frame Electric Trailer Jack Won't Run but the Light Works
  • If the jack light is working but the motor won't that means that the jack is getting power so we can rule out the fuse/breaker being the problem. It is possible that the battery the jack is connected to has enough power to run the light but not the motor. The battery may need to be charged or replaced. A local auto parts store can test the battery. Another possible cause is a weak ground. The light doesn't need to have the best ground but the motor which draws more amperage does need...

  • How Does the Stromberg-Carlson Electric Jack Wire for Installation
  • Typically these powered jacks would get their power from a trailer mounted battery that is maintained via the 7-Way on the truck. The truck would keep the battery topped off when towing down the road and the jack would pull the amperage it needs from the trailer battery. So yes, you would attach this Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack # JET-3555 to the positive side of the battery for installation.

It has a bracket height when retracted of 10-3/4 inches and an extended bracket height of 28-3/4 inches. For another example, the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-3555 has 24 inches of total lift, and that consists of 19 inches of travel and a 5 inch drop leg. It has a bracket height of 8-1/2 inches retracted and 27-1/2 inches fully...

  • Recommended Electric Tongue Jack for 2006 Gulfstream Cavalier Travel Trailer
  • A 3500 lbs electric tongue jack would be a good fit for your 6200 lbs 2006 Gulfstream Cavalier travel trailer. Based on your trailer weighing 7000 pounds loaded you will have an approximate tongue weight of 700 pounds. I would recommend the Stromberg Carlson # JET-3555 (white) or # JET-3755 (black) as they are rated at 3,500 lbs. I have also included an FAQ for you too. One item I highly recommend is the Ultra-Fab Protective Cover # UF38-944020. With the electric jack being out in the...

  • Maximum Traveling Height of the Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack # JET-3500
  • If the Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack # JET-3555 is lifting to it's maximum travel distance of 18 inches then the jack is working fine and you just have too tall of a setup for this jack to work ideally for. Putting down a FloTool Jack Stand part # FT11933MI would take up some of this room. If it's stopping short then there is an internal problem. If internal components were to fail, replacement of the jack is the only option.

  • Troubleshooting a Jammed Electric Trailer Jack
  • It is likely that the interior gears have stripped due to the jack over-extending. Since manually cranking the jack is unsuccessful, you will probably need to replace the jack, as the jack manufacturers will smash or otherwise distort the end of the screw that turns to move the leg up and down to prevent it from over-extending. If it does end up extending too far the threads will become permanently cross-threaded and it will never work right again.

  • Troubleshooting JET-3500 Jack that Wont Extend/Retract But Light Still Works
  • Since the jack grounds through the mounting assembly the first thing I would do is check the condition of the main ground of the trailer and for corrosion near the mounting assembly and clean as necessary. Make sure that the vehicle side and trailer side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside and out. The main connector grounds should be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces. An inadequate ground would allow the light to still work but could prevent it...

  • How to Wire Up and Install Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack, # JET-3500
  • The Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack, # JET-3555, runs off a 12 volt battery. The best source for power would be from a 12 volt battery (like a car battery) mounted on the trailer. The red power wire on the Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack, # JET-3500, is the power wire and it will attach to the positive battery terminal on your trailer battery. First, remove the fuse in the in-line fuse holder on the red wire. Mount the jack to the trailer and tighten it down. The jack grounds through the mounting...

  • Replacement A-Frame Jack Recommendation for a 2011 Keystone Passport Ultra Lite
  • The Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack # JET-3555 that you referenced was designed to fit basically all a-frame trailers. Since yours had an a-frame powered jack on it already this would work well as a replacement for it. This jack has a 3,500 lb lifting capacity which would be more than enough. Check out the review video I attached as well. For a black version similar to this you would want the part # JET-3755.

  • Troubleshooting a Electric Jack that will Extend but not Retract
  • It sounds like the switch in the jack is bad and should be replaced. Typically when an electric jack will go one direction but not the other its because the switch is broken. You might try checking all the fuses on the jack also. Since your trailer is brand new I would imagine there is some kind of warranty that would cover your jack. I would try contacting where you bought the trailer.

  • How to Wire the Stromberg Carlson Electric A-Frame Trailer Tongue Jack, # JET-3555
  • The Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack, # JET-3555, runs off a 12 volt battery. The best source for power would be from a 12 volt battery (like a car battery) mounted on the trailer. If you have a separate battery mounted on the trailer, a 7-Way trailer connectors 12 volt circuit can be used to maintain (but not up charge) that battery.

  • Before you replace the jack make sure the jack is grounded properly to the frame of your trailer, also check to make sure the main ground of your trailer connector is attached to a clean metal surface. Also check to make sure the 12 volt battery you are using has a good charge as it sounds like the jack isn't able to get enough amperage to operate when under a load. The jack sounds like it's making the same sound a car starter will make when the battery is either dead or the battery...

Turn clockwise to extend the jack and counter-clockwise to retract it. I spoke with one of our installers about the fuses blowing. • Stromberg Carlson Trailer Jack # JET-3500 Recommendation To Help Install Spring Bars
  • Yes, this Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack # JET-3555 that you referenced would be adequate to lift your trailer and truck enough to install the spring (sway) bars of your weight distribution system. Usually when we recommend a jack for a trailer we say that as long as the jack is rated to lift half of the weight of the trailer it will work well. However, since you will be lifting the rear of your truck also you would need a little extra capacity, so the 3,500 lb capacity of the # JET-3500...

  • Can the Powered A-Frame Jack JET-3555 Be Powered by Parallel Trailer Batteries
  • Your batteries are run in parallel and the Powered A-Frame Jack part # JET-3555 can be wired to them and still allow you to take advantage of the extended battery life of having batteries set up like this. You would just need to run the power wire of the # JET-3555 to the main output power wire of your paralleled battery and since this jack grounds through the mounting hardware you would be good to go once installed.

  • Troubleshooting a Stromberg Carlson Trailer Jack # JET-3500 that Was Stuck with Blown Fuse
  • What is probably occurring on your jack is that it has been extended too far at some point and has become stuck. Trying to move it in either direction draws too much power as the motor tries to push the leg free. This cause the fuse to blow. What many electric jack manufacturers will do is to smash or otherwise distort the end of the screw that turns to move the leg up and down to prevent it from extending to far. If it does end up extending too far the threads will become permanently...

The only part recommended for lubrication is the inner jack tube. I've linked you to a product demonstration video featuring the # JET-3555 powered trailer jack. • Electric Trailer Jack Will Not Work Even with a New Battery
  • The first thing I would check is where the electric jack # JET-3555 is mounted because that is also where it grounds to the trailer. Make sure there is no corrosion between the jack and the surface it mounts to. With that cleaned up, the new battery, and the in line fuse still intact the jack should work. If it does not then it is likely a shorted switch. You would have to take the cover off of the jack to access the switch wiring or the wiring directly to the motor. That way you can...

  • Total Height of the Stromberg Carlson Trailer Jack JET-3500 When Extended Bracket to Foot
  • The lifting height the # JET-3555 is capable of is 18 inches. When the jack is fully retracted it is 10-3/8 from jack foot to bottom of mounting bracket. So when it is fully extended it would be 28-3/8 inches from the jack foot to the bottom of the mounting bracket. Since you need 26 inches this would work well.

  • The Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack # JET-3555 grounds through the mounting bracket of the jack. If you run the ground of your trailer battery to the trailer frame it should work.
