Video Transcript for Bulldog Camper Jack - Landing Gear - BD500161 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Bulldog Electric 5th Wheel Landing Gear Set. Now this unit is perfect for raising, leveling, and supporting your fifth wheel trailer or RV. It's going to feature the dual, electric jacks that elevate and lower with the flip of a switch, so no more hand cranking. Each motor has its own toggle switch for independent operation and accurate leveling. This right here is your control panel. It's a really nice design.

I really like the way it looks. It's got your operations for both the left jack, and right jack, so really nice design. All the wiring's there on the back. Now the unit comes with a detailed wiring diagram as well. That way you can easily get everything connected correctly. Now there's going to be two different settings for the unit.

You're going to have high-speed and high-torque. You can choose whichever setting you want for your application. You'll do that during the wiring part of your installation according to those included instructions. I also want to mention that the orientation of the motor can be flipped to best fit the space available for your application. Each jack is going to come with a drop leg. Now a drop leg is going to increase overall extension for maximum adjustability.

Your jack has an outer tube, an inner tub, and a drop leg. It's also going to have the spring-loaded pull pins right here. Now you always want to make sure these are facing out or to the side of the trailer. That way they're always easily accessible. Those are included.

They install on there very easily, and those spring-loaded pull pins allow for fast and easy operation of that drop leg. The unit is also going to feature heavy gauge, self-leveling foot plates for excellent stability. Nice, large design, so it's really going to help spread out the applied weight. Especially on softer surfaces to help prevent sinking. That self-leveling design means that it has the ability to tilt a little bit depending on the ground that you're setting these down on. We're looking at a sturdy steel construction and heavy-duty die-cast gear boxes that are built to last. We're going to have clear, zinc-coated inner tubes and black-painted outer tubes that are designed to resist corrosion and last a long time. Each leg has independent motor, that each draw at maximum load of 25 amps of current. This limit is determined by the sets two manual reset circuit breakers that are located right here on the control panel, right next to the switches. Those are easily accessible as well. Now with the unit, you can see everything that you're going to get. I do want to point out that it does come with four brand new mounting brackets, and four sets of mounting hardware. You're going to get the toggle switches, wiring harness. Really nice design. I do want to mention real quick, just a little bit about these weld-on brackets. Now I have them set up according to what's recommended in the instructions, so this one is on top of the weld stops. This one is on the bottom of the weld stops. Now I understand that each application, each trailer may call for a little bit of a different set-up, so you do have a little bit of flexibility there, but I do recommend installing it according to the included instructions. The weld stops are only on two sides of the jacks, so please keep that in mind. That allows you to maybe orient the jack in a way that's going to work best for your particular trailer, and your particular application. Really nice design though. Four weld stops per jack, and again you're going to get the brand-new weld on brackets. It also comes with an emergency override crank bolt that's going to operate the unit manually by using a socket and wrench. It goes in this area right here and that is included. Now when it comes to the total lift for this unit, you're going to get a total lift of 36", 18" of screw travel, and then 18" of drop leg travel. Travel per minute is 9". The outer tube measures 2 1/2" by 2 1/2", and the combined support capacity is 10,000 pounds. When it comes to the lift capacity, the combined lift capacity, in the high speed setting is 7,000 pounds, and the high torque setting is 10,000 pounds. Now a few measurements I want to mention for you real quick, the distance between these welded on stop brackets is 15 1/2". The distance from the top of this bracket to the bottom of this bracket is 17 1/2". Your foot plate, that measures 8" long by 6" wide, and then the clearance that you have with the motor in this orientation, from the top of the welded on stop bracket to the top of the motor is 12 1/2". From the bottom of that welded on stop bracket to the top of the motor is 13 1/2" and again, the orientation can be flipped to best fit your space. That's going to do it for today's look at the Bulldog Electric 5th Wheel Landing Gear Set.

Received thee landing gear in three days. Box was in bad shape but the legs were not damaged. Installation was challenging and took me 6 hours. The non generator side was relatively straight forward. Both sides required some grinding down of either the welded on tabs or my existing brackets. I was ver happy I did not have to weld on new brackets and could just use the existing ones that came with the trailer. The generator side was very challenging with very limited clearance. The new legs had to slide in from underneath the trailer on the gen side. In order for this to happen I had to spread apart the metal u brackets as the new bulldog legs have tabs welded on two sides. I also had to cut into the metal generator enclosure (not the generator itself)to create more space to maneuver the leg into place. Also you may have to remove the motor of the leg to make the leg have a smaller foot print to get it up and into place on the generator side. It was well worth taking the motor off. It was easier to attach it again once the leg was bolted in place. The wiring and switch install was the easy part. I love how it works so far. The new legs are so much quieter than the old one motor drive system I had on it. It just seems like the new dual motor system works so much better. If you have a toy hauler and a generator with a lot of front loaded weight on your fifth wheel, this is the way to go. Sorry I don’t have any video of the installation as I was too busy cussing at myself worried it wouldn’t work out, but it did thank goodness. The installation for me required a lot of patience and several breaks, but it can be done. Only suggestion I woul have for Bulldog would be to make a switch where you could push one button to raise and lower the both legs at the same time. 505447

Like the jacks, but the switches were...well...lousy. Ended up purchasing the Atwood switch to run jacks independent or in tandem, Makes a great setup 165475

I have just received my landing gear and have not had the opportunity to install it yet. I have unpacked all of the parts and inventoried everything and it all seems to be here and in good shape. the instructions look pretty much straight forward and should not be to difficult to install. etrailer has been great in their responce to my order and shipping. Thanks 104083

They work great. I like operating them independently. Good power using the lower gear ratio. My pin weight is just over 4,000 lbs. Uneven ground would put more than 2,000 lbs. on a single jack. I also relocated the operating switches on a mounting plate and used the existing jack switch compartment to keep them dry. 284234

Wish these were standard on all 5th wheels. These are a huge improvement over the single motor setup. No more worries about failure, stripping gears or being stuck manually cranking to hookup to the truck. Well worth the price. Only thing I would like to see improved is that the switch have 3 buttons instead of 2. The 3rd button (switch) would work both legs (motors) together. Would also like to see limit lines machined on the shaft tube of the leg. 436808

I have not had the product installed yet, so cannot say much about it. I'm sure it will do the job. etrailer service is excellent! The site information content is excellent. Local RV repair was told after 3 weeks that this part was out of stock and they did not know when they could deliver. This was from an old fashion catalog supplier. I places and order with etrailer with second day shipping, Monday afternoon, and got the part Wednesday afternoon. Missed the opportunity to have it installed this week due to weather. If the old fashion supplier had admitted 3 weeks ago, that the could not supply the part, I would have ordered from etrailers and had it waiting Wednesday for installation. etrailer was $300 less! 418527

My recent purchase at etrailer went smoothly, I sent them a question asking about changing my fifth wheel jacks from single to independent system. They got back to me with several options within 24 hours. I purchased the bulldog electric jacks, they shipped them at no charge and in a couple days. The installation went smoothly with no problems, these are an excellent product, and I should have done this years ago. Don’t wait if you have electric jacks with one motor, buy these and be able to level your fifth wheel quickly and easily. 476963

Jacks arrived in good order. With a little grinding they adapted to our older Wilderness Rv with no problem. Was able to wire the switches even though I am not an electrician. Seem to be a good purchase. 412074

I ordered a set of Bulldog landing jacks for my 5th wheel for the lowest price I could find anywhere else. They shipped on time and arrived as promised. When I installed incorrectly and damaged part, they replaced it, no questions asked. Will definitely use in the future! 338035

Let me tell you about etrailer. These folks have the best, no the greatest service! I asked a question on there site and had the totally wrong product. They contacted me with the best product I needed. They had research my 5th wheel RV and there is more than a few on the market...lol. This is the forth product I have ordered from them and all has been sport on to fit properly. Plus video on installation. Gosh, I can not say enough. Well just a little more. These bull dog legs make the manufactures legs look leke tinker toys. RG 337653

Got the product and its a great package, with some exceptions. I agree the front plate for the switches is flimsy and it was bent and scratched with little protection in the packaging. I was also disappointed that the entire KIT didn't come with a wiring harness. But hey... for the price and the well built gear. I will get past it. The legs fit my 2010 Heartland Cyclone without modification, But the one behind the gen... geez. You think heartland would have built in access to that leg ... even for maintenance. Oh, hey the directions do not tell you to grease anything... make sure you grease the bearing on the side top leg screw. 156216

The Positive - These are much bigger and more Robust than my previous jacks and have the advantage of allowing for leveling which is a plus. The measurements of the standard tabs fits most modern 5th wheels, but sadly on my unit and older Sea Breeze I had to replace the brackets with the supplied ones (which include all the fasteners). The fitting is relatively uneventful and aside from the small space available should not create too many problems for an average person to install. The Negative - The spring loaded adjustment handles did not properly line up with the holes (welding imperfection) and required that they be reamed out - no big deal but an irritation none the less. The bigger concern was that while the one leg raised and lowered with virtually no movement or vibration at the motor, on the 2nd leg there was substantial movement (approx 1/2 inch) of the motor in it's housing. I called Bulldog and was told that this could be a result of a manufacturing imperfection or transport damage, and that this would usually not make a difference other than visually. As an engineer this does not give me a warm and fuzzy feeling (hence the 4 star rating) - With a 5 year guarantee I hope I will not need to replace the wobbly leg at some time in the future. Overall a good and possibly great replacement to the standard Jacks. 349526

The installation of this product is not for amateurs. I have a toy hauler. The generator and propane bottles had to be removed and the sound box for the generator had to be removed. The left side landing gear took some modification with an air powered metal grinder to the camper to make it fit in the mount tabs. The one on the right side went right in. This is not the fault of the landing gear rather the camper manufacturer. Wiring is straight forward but you will need to buy some 10 AWG wire to make the run to the right side. I did away with the plug in connections because they were cheap and used heat shrink butt connectors to ensure a better weather tight seal. The system works great. Have only used it right after installation but it seem to work perfectly. Does not struggle as my old landing gear did. I used the high torque feature instead of the high speed so it's slow but steady. 530197

This product exceeded my expectations. I own a very heavy pin weight toy hauler 5th wheel and the 6k single motor lift struggled to raise or lower it and the hand crank was literately useless when the motor broke down on me camping a couple of weeks ago. I did a lot of research before purchasing this product and after a very easy install I tried raising and lowering the coach and I was all smiles. These landing gear have zero struggle and are super quiet. They lift my coach so easily that I may try switching them to the speed setting just to see how it goes. And, as an added bonus i can now level the coach side to side. Awesome!! I would recommend this product to anyone. Etrailer.com was excellent to work with, very helpful on any questions I had. Quick shipping and very informative every step of the process. 101461

This product held a lot of promise, but I'm not thrilled with the final result. 1. The instructions say to use the template that is included to cut the hole for the switch panel. No template was included. 2. The switch plate is a flimsy piece of plastic with an even lower quality label attached. In order to get the switch plate to mount flush with the RV, I had to drill additional holes in the plastic. 3. When you screw the plate to the RV, the cheap plastic label tears and looks really bad. 4. Once the plastic plate was mounted to the RV, the switches kept popping out of the plastic every time you'd use them. They are not bolted to the plastic backing plate, but simply pressed in with an inadequate clip to hold them. 5. The unit comes set for high torque applications, but you can also set it for high speed. The instructions show that you must place the motors in a different configuration that what it is delivered with. But there are no instructions on how to remove the motor to reconfigure it. Hint: If you want to change to the high speed application, there is a drift pin that you must remove first. Then you can lift the motor off the shaft, reposition it, and reinstall the drift pin. 6. When it was all installed, the motors wiggle and oscillate horribly on top of the jacks. I wish I could attach a video of this. There is no way with that much movement that the unit will be as robust as advertised. Also, the only thing that holds the motor to the jack is the little drift pin on top of the drive shaft. There has to be a much better way to accomplish this task. On a good note, the jacks did fit in place of my old landing gear and no modifications were needed to the clamps or frame. They bolted right in. Also, once everything was in place, they were much faster than my old landing gear. I would not recommend purchase of these jacks. 91919

Overall this was a great purchase. I replaced my factory original single motor landing jacks on my 2007 38' 5th wheel toy hauler with these individual jacks. I used the "fast" setting, and the jacks lifted my camper probably 2-3 times faster than the shaft mated factory jacks which could not be operated individually. Even on the "fast" setting the motors and wiring never get hot during operation, which tells me they're not being overstressed, even on my 17000 GVW trailer. My only complaint was that one of the two jacks operated very smoothly and quietly, while the second still operated smooth and at the same speed, but was very loud and had alot of gear noise. No idea why that was, but it never seemed to hurt operation. I've since sold the trailer and bought a new one, which has the same jacks as my old trailer. I'll likely be installing these again on my new trailer! 338567

Works as it should. I set it in higher speed mode. Had to modify top bracket to make it fit my installation. Also modified spring pin for legs by removing about 1/4" with a grinder. I would definitely recommend this product. 152505

The product came in 2 days before the date i was told by the email. Witch was great The jacks mounted with ease I really like the dual motor The only thing wrong was having to get the 10 gage wire to do the hook up. It would have been the perfect set up if the kit came With the wire. I would give it a 8.5 out of 10 Very happy Thank you etrailer 540138

Love the bulldog landing gear for my fifth wheel camper the dual motors make a lot of sense well built and great warranty.took about 4 hours to install it could be made easier to install if they would provide a plug and play wire harness so the install is fairly complicated and i got lucky did not have to weld on new brackets so if you want this sweet set up go for it you can't go wrong 101770

These landing gear are an excellent replacement for OEM style single motor landing gear that manufactures put in as original equipment. They are very heavy duty and work really well. The installation is not difficult as long as you measure your internal mounting brackets and compare them to the dimensions on Bulldogs to make sure that they line up. When I installed mine. One side was about a 30 minute job and the other side was much more difficult due to generator blocking access. Eventually we got it but it was much more work. I have mine set for the High Torque setting as opposed to the High Speed setting due to the weight of my trailer. One thing you will loose is the ability to manually operate the motors easily. You can manually operate these but it is from using a wrench at the top of each motor individually. 435974

Arrived quickly. Found one of the legs drive rod was bent so motor wobbled badly. I was able to straighten it good enough to use. Other than that the general install was very easy and it works great. I really liked that it has two speed options and was easy to wire. 512478

Replaced single motor landing gear on my 2008 Gearbox. Great price, free shipping and fast delivery. E-mail updates were great and useful. 4 stars are because Bulldog installation instructions are limited. The wiring diagram is useful. Had to research installation on the net and Bulldog shows a pretty good video. etrailer gets 5 stars for service, price, and fast delivery. Thanks. 457299

I installed the dual motor Bulldog 5th wheel landing gear on my 30 Airstream. These motors lift the trailer much easier than the original single motor unit that came on the trailer. I did have to purchase some #10 red and black wire to complete the electrical connection, but otherwise everything was in the box. Very glad to have it installed, now I don't have to worry about the old single motor failing. Actually the old single motor did fail when we returned from the last trip, I had to use a floor jack to get the 5th wheel off of my truck. This is a nice up grade to my trailer. I recommend this product. 456474

For being the most expensive Jack's on the market when I bought them, I was disappointed in the quality. After I installed the ladding gear, The motors wobble around the jack leg as they are in use and I didn't have very good confidence in them. They worked as advertised untill 6 weeks ago I had one of my jack legs bend while I had them at almost full extension. After a very frustrating time trying to get through to customer service (on hold for over 30 minutes 3 different times) I sent an email with pictures to customer service. I received a one sentence email back that said they don't warranty bending. After back and forth emails and finally a phone call, I convinced them to at least look at it if I paid for the shipping to send it back. In the end Bulldog did warranty the jack leg and paid for return shipping. I was told a thrust washer had failed and damaged the bearing causing the problem. I will not purchase from Bulldog anymore due to there poor customer service, even though they came through in the end, it was way more trouble than it should have been. 409572

After my original jacks failed horribly, I contacted etrailer for a better replacement. They suggested a set of bulldog jacks. They work great! With a motor for each one, they lift faster and easily do their job. No more straining or annoying cross bar to deal with. I wish I had got them sooner. Etrailers customer service is Superior! No one has ever contacted me to see how things where with my purchase after a Year has gone by. I will definitely be calling Etrailer for any future needs. 413876

The Bulldog jacks were a great addition to my trailer, they are very strong and lift the trailer with ease. I especially like being able to make fine adjustments to side to side leveling with the individual leg control. I have had one problem which is why I only gave them four stars. Do not raise your landing gear until it stops. The torque on the motors are so strong that they will twist the drive rod until it gets stuck and won't come down. I went on a trip and had to keep my truck attached to the trailer because I could not get one leg to come down. The solution was to take the stuck leg out of the trailer, secure it in my work bench vise, place a pipe wrench on the drive shaft with a four foot bar, and break the drive shaft loose. I have since marked the legs with a sharpie as a guide to stop before the legs bottom out. 435964

by:

Alot better than the original jack system I was always worried whether it was going to lift the trailer off my truck when I got to the campsite. Then one day it didn't had to level the truck and camper together. This system has way more jacking power and the individual controls are really nice. I installed them on my 33 foot toy hauler fifth wheel it seemed like I was right on the line whether I should put them on the fast or slow setting I opted for the slow setting as I had to remove the generator to install these Jacks was not the easiest. on the higher capacity lift setting they are a little slow but I never have to worry whether they're going to do the job. if your original Jack system has troubles don't waste the money just put a set of these on. 636022

Actually it's crap. Water gets into the motors and they quit working. I've bought two sets already and of the 4 jacks only one still works. I've disassembled the motor covers, regreased and sealed them but they still fill up with water. Absolute garbage. 635615

Best addition I’ve made to my trailer. I use to have the single gear drive for the legs of my 36’ triple axle trailer. Even replaced original drive with a heavier duty aluminum drive. Still had the gears jumping and at times had to use the hand crank while trying to get jacks to lift the trailer. I personally installed these Bulldog jacks on my trailer, it took a couple hours but final result was game changing. Highly recommend these jacks for any 5th wheel trailer. 597229

Love the bulldog jacks on my fifth wheel. No strain and replaced the old jacks with one motor and clutch. Don't think I will ever have a worry. The help I received from e trailer was great. I asked them about torque or speed. These jacks can be wired either way. They explained the difference and I made the decision of torque. After all, camping is about relaxing and not rush. 356482

I buy a considerable amount of products online, and typically do not write reviews, but in this case I will make a exception as the web site, the shipping, the tracking and the information online was excellent. 338173

I installed them in about 5 hrs I am 80 years old . I had run the wiring prior to the install. I chose fast gears as my 5th wheel is light. They work as good as any you can get. 329648

Fit these to my keystone sprinter after the original gear was buckled in a windstorm Christmas day. Much heavier and the fit was better than factory using the original brackets, absolutely no slop and the leg stops are welded on, not simply stamped out notches. Had to flip the motors over to fit. No problem there. Only complaint is they only given you a foot of wire on the new switch panel. Would have been great if they gave you enough to actually wire in everything without having to splice in more wire. 328794

This is an excellent product! The original landing gear on our 34' Attitude was always giving us trouble...just not enough power. After replacing the gearbox 3 times I decided to install the Bulldog landing gear. They have all the power you will ever need to raise your 5th wheel and they are very "sweet" operating! And they were easy to install. 316079

Do you have a question about this Camper Jack?

  • Replacement Landing Gear Set for a 2004 Nu-Wa Hitchhiker Fifth Wheel Trailer
  • There are options available for you but I cannot recommend you attach new weld stops to the Bulldog Electric 5th Wheel Landing Gear Set part # BD500161. The correct way for you to install these on your trailer would be to cut off the brackets you have now and weld the new ones on in the correct position. The 5-1/4" spacing you have now is unheard of and we would not have anything that is a direct fit. The brackets would need to be spaced apart much further than this to properly handle the...

  • Recommended Electric Jack For Goose Neck Horse Trailer
  • For an electric jack with the 10,000 lb capacity of your Ram 12000 Series manual jack, I recommend the Bulldog Electric 5th Wheel Landing Gear Set - 36" Travel - 10,000 lbs # BD500161. This kit will give you the 2 independently motorized jacks with drop legs and the switches needed. I've attached a photo giving you the dimensions so you can determine fit. Another option is the Bulldog Velocity Series Electric Landing Gear Jack - 24" Lift - 12,000 lbs # BD185400. This is an external...

  • 2-Motor Powered Landing Gear Recommendation for 2010 Keystone Montana
  • The Montana by Keystone had a special set of landing gear made for them by Lippert. So typically we recommend the part # LC178653 for the lead leg and part # LC178652 for the follow leg. The difference is the mounting bracket location that's on the jack. So your best option for a dual motor landing gear setup would be the Bulldog kit part # BD500161 which can have the motors inverted when installed like what you see in the attached picture. This will give you more clearance. The mounting...

  • What Happens if Motor on Bulldog Electric Landing Gear set Fails?
  • That's a very good question, and in fact there is a Plan B if a motor fails on a Bulldog Electric 5th Wheel Landing Gear Set, # BD500161. You will need to find an appropriate socket and wrench, and you can turn it manually. Take a look at the picture I've attached for a reference. There is a replacement motor if necessary, # BD500359.

If you just need to replace legs then the lead leg is # LC179013 and the follower leg is # LC179014. If you need the whole set use # LC333964.

  • Can Bulldog Powered 5th Wheel Trailer Landing Gear be Operated Manually
  • Yes, you can manually raise and lower the Bulldog landing gear, # BD500161, in the event of a power failure or something else. There is a spot on top of the jacks where you can attach a wrench to and turn it to raise or lower the jack. This will work in a pinch but it is slower than the motor is. For an upgrade I suggest the dual-motor 12K-rated Ultra-Fab kit # UF17-943010 or the similar 10K-rated Bulldog # BD500161. Both provide 36-inches or more of lift. A highly-rated dual-motor system will work with less strain and should provide trouble-free service for a long time.
