Video Transcript for Bulldog Camper Jack - A-Frame Jack - BD500199 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Bulldog Power Drive Trailer Jack for A-Frame Trailers. This jack features a lift capacity of 4,000 pounds. The motor is sealed, and the jack features a completely maintenance free design. It positions quickly and easily with the integrated drop leg. At the base of that drop leg is a welded on foot plate that's going to have a diameter of around 5 3/8". It's going to do a great job at spreading out the applied weight, especially on softer surfaces, to help prevent sinking. The power drive provides quiet operation and efficient use of electrical power, so no more hand cranking.

The motor also has a safety feature built into it, it's designed to shut off if over-extended or over-retracted, which is going to prevent damage to the jack, to the motor, to the internal components. One of the neat features that I want to point out about this unit is it comes with a spring loaded pull pin. This quickly releases the drop leg into position. Spring loaded design allows it to engage in every single hole, so that way you can adjust between the incremental height adjustment quickly and easily. The spring loaded pull pin is included, it installs quickly, if you don't want to use that, it does also come with a standard pin and clip that can be used instead of the spring loaded pull pin. The other thing I want to point out about the unit is here, on top. It's going to feature a built in leveling system.

It's got the built in level that offers simple, accurate leveling. It's easily accessible, easily visible, located right there on top of the jack. Now, a lot of the jacks on the market today are coming out with LED lighting systems, so this one has an LED light located right here that casts light at a downward angle to illuminate the coupler area, that way it makes hooking up or disconnecting easier at night or in low-lit conditions. It's going to have these front mounted LEDs that illuminate the coupler area for easier visibility. The thing that separates this jack apart is located on each side. You can see, right here, we're going to have a side mounted spot light located on each side of the jack.

These are angled rearward, to illuminate weight distribution brackets, so if you have a weight distribution system, these lights will illuminate the bracket area. It just makes working in those areas much easier at night or in low-light conditions. The unit's also going to feature a 4 to 6" overlap of the tubes at full extension, which is going to provide additional support for side loading. It's going to have the easy-to-access toggle switches, that make for simple operation. It's also going to feature, right here, an easily accessible emergency manual override in case of power loss, so you remove this cap, and then you can take the crank handle, place it down in that area, and then you can manually operate the jack in case of power loss. Now, this creates a really nice, tight seal, which is going to keep dirt and grime out of that compartment. The unit's going to feature a black housing, with a sleek design that protects the motor.

The jack legs, or the jack tubes, and mounting area, these are all made from a steel construction. The outer tube features a black powder coated finish, as well as the mounting plate. The inner tube, drop leg, and foot plate features a zinc finish, so overall the unit's going to do a great job at resisting rust and corrosion. The unit is an easy installation, it's designed to mount to any a-frame trailer that has a mounting area for a round trailer jack. The jack features a very versatile mounting platform, which is a great design, making sure that it's going to fit pretty much any setup out there on your a-frame trailer. It has a bolt-on installation. It's going to come with the included hardware, so you're going to get your bolt, you're going to get your nut, star washer and split lock washer. The bolts are a 3/8" diameter bolt, grade five, and they measure one inch long. It's also going to come with a couple zip ties, right here, that way you can secure your power wire once you have it connected to power, you can secure that out of the way, making sure it doesn't get damaged. The power wire on the unit connects to a 12 volt power source, and the unit's going to ground through the mounting hardware. It does feature a built in circuit breaker, which automatically trips and resets. A few measurements that I want to go over with you real quick. Right now the jack is in the fully retracted position, so if we take a bracket height measurement from the ground to the bottom of the mounting plate, that's going to give us a measurement of about 9 3/4", retracted. With it fully extended, that measurement is going to increase to about 31 3/4", so the total travel is 22". The jack itself is going to provide a lift of 14", and then the drop leg provides an additional lift of eight inches. The holes on the drop leg are separated on center by two inches, so it's going to have an incremental height adjustment on the drop leg of two inches. The clearance from the bottom of the mounting plate to the top of the jack measures around 21". The outer tube diameter is 2 1/4, inner tube diameter is two inches. We want to go ahead and hook this up to power, that way you can see how it operates, you can hear how quiet it is, and overall, it's just a really neat design, very easy to use. I've got a power box under here, connect my power wire. Also need to make a ground connection. I want you to see, here, that we have our LED lights, so we have the ones here at the front, then we also have the side mounts, again, for weight distribution brackets. You hit the extend button, quickly and efficiently raises the jack. Really nice design, quiet operation. Hit the retract button to retract the jack. Now I'm going to hold it all the way down, and you'll hear that motor shut off, which again is going to prevent internal damage to the internal components and to the motor. Really nice design. Last thing I want to show you is just that spring loaded pin with the drop leg, so when you're ready to extend the drop leg you pull this pin, and then once it lines up with the hole, it automatically re-engages, so it's just a really nice design. Again, if you don't want to use that, you can use the standard pin and clip that also comes with the unit. That's going to do it for today's look at the Bulldog Power Drive Trailer Jack for A-Frame Trailers.

I ordered the Reese Bulldog 4000lb power tongue jack on 6/2 and received it on 6/6, my second order from etrailer and it came just as fast as the hitch that I ordered from them previously. The jack was characteristically well packaged so everything was received in perfect condition. The installation took a half hour, including hitching the trailer up to my truck and unhitching after the swap out. I did read the instructions quickly before starting and I would recommend that anyone doing the installation do so as well, just to avoid any hick-ups. Overall it was a very easy installation. Because of limited space I did have to mount the jack sideways, so I appreciate that Reese gave me that option. The one item that I did not finish was a permanent power hook-up. The power wire provided was too short so I will be putting a connector inline so that I can route the wire to the battery terminal. 518419

After a year of using the Bulldog tongue jack, I really appreciate how easy it makes hooking up the weight distribution bars on my hitch. Just push the Extend button and lift the connected trailer tongue until I can flex the weight distribution tension bars into place. These need to be standard equipment on travel trailers the crank jack that came with it was entirely inadequate/impractical for the work needed to lift the connected tongue to complete my hook-up.

The first unit I received was faulty, or so I thought. etrailer quickly sent me out a replacement which I installed and experienced the same issue as the first which was no power even when grounded to the trailer. I installed this on an aluminum frame enclosed trailer and regardless of using the star washers, grinding paint, running a wire from the bolt direct to the trailer frame I could not get the unit to ground without running a wire direct to the negative side of the onboard battery. It works fine now but just be aware if you happen to have an aluminum trailer it takes a little more work to make it work which would have been nice to know before wasting several hours trying different things and troubleshooting. etrailer's customer service was excellent. 576895

I like the Bulldog powerdrive. It works as advertised and was easy to install. My only issue is it is a little slow to raise and lower but that is only an observation. I would recommend this product. 310848

I installed the jack this morning. Very fast delivery from etrailer. Seems to work well testing it on the lot. Suggested improvements. 1) I had to mount the jack sideways because of limited clearance so that is a good feature. But the jack had to face toward the right (looking from the front). This meant the spring loaded pull handle was under the trailer and took too much force for me to operate easily so I went with the standard pin. The mounting holes on the jack could be reconfigured so the jack faces left and the pull handle is forward in a sideways mount. 2) The power cord was barely long enough. It should be a foot longer. 3) The mount for the level has three holes and screws. It should have 4 so you can choose front/back or side/side leveling no matter how the jack is mounted. 269814

The jack has performed well. Had to replace the level which Bulldog provided under warranty. I would recommend the jack.

It was very easy to install and it works great. The old tongue jack worked okay but this bully dog jack is smooth and powerful. 539259

Still giving great service, the small bubble level however has evaporated for the second time. The jack is strong and dependable.

I looked long & hard for a trailer jack that would allow the tailgate of my '14 Ram lower without inference. This is the answer that I came up with. The clearance dimension is as close as 1/2" between the tailgate & the front of the jack. etrailer personnel assisted with printed info, taking physical measurements, photos, etc. All in an effort, so I can make the best decision for my situation. The added feature of the auxiliary lights is great coupling/uncoupling in the dark or near dark. I have had this jack for approximately one year without any interruption of service. I could not even imagine cranking up & down a traditional jack. Great product choice. I would highly recommend this product. 475851

I bought this jack for my XLR 18HFS toy hauler. I needed to get the tongue up to reduce the ramp breakover angle to load my Road King. The trailer was equipped with a manual side crank unit, so the electric unit was a nice upgrade. The drop foot plus the stroke of the unit does what I needed. There is no end of stroke protection so the jack really jerks when it hits the ends. I simply marked the leg with a sharpie... I put arrows when I'm getting close and then a line when it's about an inch from full extend. I had to extend the hot wire a foot, but the motor is protected internally so no fuse is needed. My only other comment regards the built in level: I had to turn mine 90 degrees to clear the propane tanks but I wanted the level to remain fore-and-aft. I had to drill the holes myself to make this change. One last comment... my level blistered, or shattered, I'm assuming from heat. I had also purchased a cover (UF38-944020) that basically rests right on top of the level. I contacted etrailer and they sent me a new level. I have a foam insulator between the level and the cover now. 541013

- BD500199
by:

It arrived quickly, was easy to install, fit right where the old jack was. The cover fit correctly. It worked just like it was supposed to. It is installed on a 10k gvw cargo/camper hybrid and jacks it no problem. 388563

Put this on my passport 2810BH. Tongue weights of 500lbs to 1080lbs. More than adequate power and travel distance. Easily able to lift trailer up a bit to enable weight distr bars to be installed/removed. Tow with a 2018 Ram Rebel 1500. Am able to put tailgate down and it clears the jack by about 3/4”or so. If there’s any significant offset angle between truck and trailer that tailgate clearance goes to below zero and you may scrape the tailgate on the jack. Be careful. This is with the jack mounted “straight ahead”. If you rotate the jack 120 degrees and install it ‘sideways’ you’d have more clearance. It just looks weird. The “On/Off” paddle switch is for lights only. It doesn’t turn power off to the jack. So if you hardwire it to 12V system, the “Ext/Retract” paddle switch is always live. Lots of reviews say the sun will fade the green dyed fluid in the level on top. I just made a simple bag/cover for it from a tarp. Overall, very satisfied with the jack. If you’re still hand cranking, why? This makes your life SO much easier. 521096

Got here fast! Hooked the new bulldog power jack up to my camper that was stuck on my truck because the old stopped working. It's runs very smooth and had no problems lifting the camper. Thanks 558509

- BD500199
by:

Overall the product does exactly what it's intended for and works well. I however assumed that this would be a simple R&R for my camper and did very little installation research other that the video provided on etrailer' s website Sadly it did not fit. Not at all. I didn't take into account that have a double framed hitch toyhauler. The baseplate on the factory leg was a TRIANGLE.....this unit was ROUND. Also the primary shaft was thicker than stock and would not drop down into place I know modifying is frowned upon, but I found that ALL powered hitch legs I found have round mounting plates and it's not mentioned the leg tube is thicker than OEM? Since NOT having a power lift wasn't an option for this camper application...too heavy in the front when ATVS loaded to lift for setting the equalizer hitch tension bars, I proceeded to modify by cutting the rear rounded mounting base ... square. Took off about 1/2 inch. Then I took my metal Dremel sanding bit and increased the hitch leg hole diameter slightly. Took about 1 hr. Dropped it in. Wired it. Tested it. All good. If you can't post this I understand, but take note that some of your website descriptions may need to be enhanced. Thanks! 670110

I have installed the jack and it seems to work well, although I have not use extensively yet. For some reason the shaft diameter was just a hair larger than my previous jack (even though listed as the same size) and I have to grind out the access holes on my trailer. Otherwise installation was straightforward. the shipping from etrailer was extremely quick, and their customer service outstanding. 628479

I bought the Bulldog Powered trailer jack from etrailer because they not only have the best price, but amazing service, and shipping was rocket fast!! It took only three days to rural Colorado. I watched etrailers video of the jack being installed that showed details and dimensions so i could be sure it would fit my application. The videos are well made and super helpful to ensure I got the right jack for my trailer. Installation was a breeze, three bolts and one wire hookup and you're finished. The jack works great and the lights are handy. I will say that it is not particularly fast, it is geared low and goes up and down slowly, but it works great and does exactly what it is supposed to do. 608955

I got the 4000# electric Jack for my enclosed car trailer. It is Awesome . It make life so much easier. It works very well. I haul show cars and I needed something to make life easier for an old man. Thank you 608235

Works great when it works. I really like this Jack and wish I could give it 5 stars. I only gave it three stars because every time I use the Jack it blows a fuse when I try to hook up the w/d hitch. My trailer only ways 4k with 400 tongue weight which would make it a two star but it could be my wiring so I gave it a three, and don't expect the level to make it more than a couple of trips. It clouded up then broke within two months of install. 606040

How are you powering the jack? Bulldog tells me that an inline fuse isnt necessary if the jack is powered by a battery onboard the trailer as recommended.

As always etrailer provided excellent service. I called etrailer regarding alternate installation of the equipment I wanted to purchase, the etrailer customer service did not know the answer to my question, he gave me a number to call the manufacture. Time manufacturer indicated that what I wanted to do would work. Went back on line and ordered the item from e trailer. Have not used the equipment yet. Item arrived in four days. Happy camper. 598629

Have this jack mounted on a 24' ATC Enclosed trailer. I haul a drag car, golf cart, spare parts and tools, roughly 9k lbs. Should have bought this jack 20 years ago. My current crank jack was getting worn out making it tough. Now I'm excited to disconnect the trailer. Works really well and doesn't seem to struggle at all. The level on top drained out but never really used it anyway. The quick release is a great option. 591795

The jack works great! It almost took longer to unpack the jack than to install it. The operation is smooth and fairly quiet. Really happy with the product AND with the SERVICE! This was a no hassle order, shipping, and installation experience. 465444

Excellent jack, very easy to install. Wired it to an auxiliary battery installed in two horse slant trailer. This battery allows provides interior lighting in the trailer when disconnected from the tow vehicle. Other than having to wait an additional week ( the wrong jack was sent in error) I received the correct jack promptly and there were no promblems with the return. Staff was courteous and professional. Highly recommend this jack and etrailer. 441604

Ask the Experts about this Bulldog Camper Jack
Do you have a question about this Camper Jack?

  • Can a Breakaway Battery be Used to Power an Electric A-Frame Trailer Jack
  • If your breakaway system is powered by its own battery then it is likely a 5 amp hour battery which is not high enough to power an electric trailer jack, such as # BD500199, since they can draw about 30 amps under load. The other issue is that a breakaway system needs its own dedicated battery and should not be shared by other 12 volt accessories. If your trailer has a 7-Way trailer connector with functioning 12 volt circuit you could use electric jack # 3370093500 which plugs into a...

  • How to Charge a Trailer Battery for Use with a Bulldog Jack
  • What you described is actually the best solution! Connecting your battery to 12V Power wire from the 7-Way on your trailer is a great way to provide a maintenance charge on your battery to operate a Bulldog jack like part # BD500199. Mounting a battery inside a box like part # 329-HM300BKS inside your trailer will further help to keep your battery safe from the elements (although battery boxes do a pretty good job at that). Please note that the 12V power from your vehicle will not...

  • Recommended Electric Trailer Jack for an A-Frame Trailer With 700 lb Tongue Weight
  • I recommend using the etrailer.com Electric Jack with a Footplate, part # EJ-3520-BBX, for A-Frames. This trailer jack is rated for 3,500 lbs so it will have more than enough power to lift and lower your tongue weight of 700 lbs. This trailer jack has a total lift of 25-1/8 inches and comes with an LED light that shines down towards the coupler to make connecting or disconnecting your trailer in the dark much easier. Another great feature about this electric trailer jack is that it has...

  • What Size Battery Should be Used to Power Bulldog Electric A-Frame Trailer Jacks
  • A standard car battery will work to power Bulldog trailer jack # BD500199. The battery will need to have an amp hour rating greater than 30 amps which is the max current draw of most electric A-frame jacks. Other option is to use jack # 3370093500 or # UF38-944037 provided your tow vehicle has a 7-Way trailer connector with functioning 12 volt circuit. Both of these jacks are powered through the 7-Way so no battery is required on the trailer to run the jack. I have linked videos for...

  • Recommended Electric Trailer Jack Compatible with Coachmen Clipper 17BHS Coupler
  • The Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-3555 has the larger outer tube diameter as you mentioned. I recommend using a rotary tool like a Dremal to enlarge that hole. Another great option is the Bulldog Powered Drive Trailer Jack- 22" Lift - 4,000 lbs # BD500199. This has an outer diameter of 2-1/4 inches which is even slightly larger and this is actually the more standard measurement for most jacks. You will need the rotary tool to enlarge the hole for this one as well.

  • Recommended Electric A-Frame Trailer Jack for a Forest River Rockwood Roo 23SS
  • You are correct in that the Fastec Electric Trailer Jack part FIC 3500 that you have now is rated for 3,500 lbs. It also offers up to an 18" lift. You can certainly use a 4,000 lb jack in place of this and for that, I recommend using the Bulldog Powered Drive Trailer Jack part # BD500199 on your Forest River Rockwood Roo 23SS. • Can an A-Frame Electric Trailer Jack be Powered through a 7-Way Trailer Connector
  • Technically, you could attach an electric jack, such as # BD500199, power wire to the 12 volt circuit on a 7-Way trailer side connector. If looking at the back of the 7-Way where the wires attach it is in the 1 o'clock position. But the vehicle side trailer wiring may not be rated high enough to power the jack properly (30 amps). If other things on the trailer are also drawing power from the 12 volt circuit then it could overload it. You would also want to keep the truck running so the...

  • A-Frame Trailer Jack Recommendation with Bearings in Screw
  • The Bulldog Jack part # BD500199 that you referenced uses an acme type screw. My favorite powered jack to recommend is the Husky Jack part # HT87247 as it has bearings in the screw which allow it to operate quicker and smoother like what you mentioned. It also shuts off automatically before topping or bottoming out. Other jacks will allow you to go too far with the jack but in doing so you damage the threads of the screw.

However, they've both been discotinued, but I have linked the page to our electric jacks with that 4000 lb weight capacity so you can see other options we do have available. For a great quality jack with a drop leg footplate, I recommend the Bulldog Powered Drive Trailer Jack - Drop Leg - A-Frame - 14" Lift - 4,000 lbs - Black # BD500199. This is an easy to use electric jack with all the components you are seeking.

  • Which Capacity of Powered Trailer Jack for Keystone Outback 277RL
  • Powered jacks are rated by their lift capacity. According to the specs I found online, the 277RL has an unloaded tongue weight of around 870 lbs. For quickest and most reliable operation, you'll want to choose the powered jack with a larger available lift capacity. In this instance, overkill is a good thing. I'd recommend the Husky Brute, part # HT87247. The jack has a 4500 lb lift capacity, but having a higher than needed capacity will mean a faster lift and a much longer life for the...

  • Can The Bulldog Powered-Drive Trailer Jack # BD500199 be Installed in a 90 Degree Orientation
  • There is no reason why you could not turn the jack at a 90 degree angle to gain more clearance. Due to the configuration of the holes in the mounting flange, you might need to drill new holes in your trailer tongue to mount the jack in that configuration. The motor housing cannot be repositioned on the shaft. Bulldog tells me that the edge of the motor housing is 1 inch away from the side of the jack tube, as shown in the photo I edited for you.

  • Troubleshooting Malfunctioning Bulldog Power Jack # BD500199
  • I spoke with my contact at Bulldog, and he provided several possible causes for the problem you are experiencing. The jack grounds via its attachment point to the trailer. In case there is excessive paint between the jack and the trailer frame, running a separate ground from the jack mounting flange to the trailer could possibly solve this problem. Make sure that the jack mounting flange is making direct metal to metal contact, and that there is no corrosion between the two that would...

  • Troubleshooting Powered A-Frame Trailer Jack Will Retract but Wont Extend
  • The problem you describe sounds like the gears in the motor have some teeth that have broken. This is caused from over extending/retracting the jack. The motor can retract the jack foot because when it's retracting, the jack isn't under load. There aren't any user replaceable parts in an A-Frame trailer jack like the # LC285318 you referred, so your best bet would be to replace the jack. I'd recommend your Father-in-Law go with the highest capacity jack available. Overkill is good...

The bend would cause the jack to bind once it reached a certain height. • Will Bulldog Powered-Drive Trailer Jack, # BD500199 Work on a 4,700 Pound Travel Trailer
  • The total lift capacity of the Bulldog Powered-Drive Trailer Jack, # BD500199, is 4,000 pounds. If mounted on the tongue of the A-Frame trailer, the tongue weight cannot exceed 4,000 pounds. If you do not know the tongue weight of your travel trailer, it is typically 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. For a trailer weighing 4,700 pounds, the tongue weight would be 470 to 705 pounds. The jack mounts on a standard A-frame trailer, most of which use the same bolt pattern for...

  • Quiet Electric Trailer Jack with Remote Operation for Use in Levitation Illusion
  • I think the Ultra-Fab Phoenix # UF38-944055 is going to be your best option. It uses a ball bearing type of system rather than a screw and nut design like most jacks. These means less friction and thus less noise. It also comes with a wireless remote key fob that would probably work better than a foot pedal would and is easier to conceal. It will also give you a little more flexibility as to how the illusion is done since there would not have to be a cable and switch attached to the jack....
