Video Transcript for Westin Trailblazer Rear Bumper with Hitch Receiver Installation - 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Today on our 1997 Jeep Wrangler we'll be installing the Westin Trailblazer Rear Bumper with two-inch receiver. Part number 42-3005. As you see, this is what our Westin Trailblazer rear bumper hitch will look like. It'll replace your factory hitch. It has a nice hammered powder coat finish here to withstand rough terrain when you're on the trails. It features a nice two-inch by two-inch hitch with a 5/8 pin hole and your chain hold downs.

You do have to drill two holes but it's not too difficult to do. It's a fairly easy hitch to install yourself. It gives you a nice rugged off-road look for your Jeep Wrangler. Let's go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed. The first step to install our new bumper is first removing the factory bumper. You can see right here there's a bracket that's holding that in place with two bolts on each side.

It's a 9/16 bolt and a 9/16 flange washer. It's a good idea to hit those with some spray lubricant just to help loosen those up since they've been on there for a while. There's not a lot of room here between the bracket and the bumper, so we'll go ahead and put our wrench on that side and the impacts on the other side to remove these bolts. These bolts have built up some rust over the years. Be gentle with them when you're taking them out so you don't strip them out.

Now go ahead and repeat the process on the driver's side. Right now we have a jack stand holding up the other side of our bumper. You can use a floor jack, jack stand, or an extra friend to hold it up while you undo the bolts on the driver's side. Now that we have our factory bumper out of the way, we're going to go ahead and take our new bumper and put it up into position. Use one of the bolts and flat washers, which will go through the bumper and through these outside mounting hood locations, and secure it with one of the nuts that came with the kit. We'll do that for the outside locations.

Two on each side. Now that we have our head center, we'll go ahead and snug the bolts on each side down. Now that we have the passenger side snugged up we'll go ahead and repeat the same process on the driver side. Now that we have two bolts on each side snugged up and our hitch bumper centered, we will need to mark two locations that need to be drilled out here in the steel structure behind the bumper. As you can see, there's two minor locations here right next to the factory locations. Now we're going to actually take the hitch back down to drill out those two holes. We'll go ahead and use the step-bit process by starting using a smaller drill bit and working our way up to the final size of 7/16. It's a good idea to hit them with some paint to cover up the bare metal to prevent rusting in the frame. We'll go ahead and grab the bumper hitch and put it back into place for the final time. Again we'll use the bolt secured with a lock washer and lock that on the other side. Again you want to get everything hand tight for right now. Make sure your bumper is aligned. So you want to go ahead and get these hand tight. Now for the two locations we drilled out, we'll go ahead and use the same bolt and flat washer here on the outside. That'll go through the hitch and into the holes we drilled. And again it gets secured with a split-lock washer and a nylon locking nut. You can go ahead and reach your hand up here behind the frame to get the hardware on. Go ahead and get that one started. Now we'll go ahead and get our second bolt here started. And again use our split-lock washer and nylon lock nut to secure that. Now for our final mounting locations here, we'll be using one of the new bolts that comes with the kit, split-lock washer, and flat washer. That'll go through the bracket, here on our new bumper, into the weld nut here on the frame. Now that we have our hitch centered, we'll go ahead and tighten down our hardware then torque it as specified in the instructions. That will conclude our install of the Westin TrailBlazer Rear Bumper Hitch Receiver with a two-inch opening, part number 42-3005 on our 1997 Jeep Wrangler. .
