Preset, User Controlled Braking

The Tow-Pro Classic applies your trailer's brakes when the brake pedal in your tow Jeep Liberty is engaged. Every time you apply the brakes in your Jeep Liberty, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the controller. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you. The amount of braking power can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, type of trailer, and size of the load. To determine which level is best for your application, you must test out your towing setup and choose what feels best.


Unlike a proportional brake controller, which activates your trailer's brakes based on the deceleration of your tow Jeep Liberty, the Tow-Pro Classic sends power out in the same way each time the brakes are engaged, no matter the braking situation. This means that you have complete control over each braking event.


Having this control over your braking is particularly important when overlanding or towing a trailer off-road because you may need to alter the trailer's braking based on the specific terrain and situation that you find yourself in. If you tow through sand or mud, for example, you'll want to keep the Classic's braking power turned down low so that when you activate the brakes in your Jeep Liberty, the trailer doesn't stop with too much force and bite into the sand. In this instance, if the braking intensity is set too high, your trailer can act as an anchor on your Jeep Liberty.


If you are towing a trailer down a steep descent, you will want to have the brake power set to a higher level to ensure that the trailer's momentum doesn't cause it to push against the tow Jeep Liberty. The fact that this controller activates your trailer's brakes immediately is helpful in this situation as well. Unlike a time-delayed controller, the Classic makes sure your trailer brakes activate as soon as you apply your Jeep Liberty's brakes, which is particularly important when you're traveling down a steep hill.


Tow-Pro Classic Operation

The dash-mountable control knob on the Tow-Pro Classic makes it easy to control your trailer's brakes. In addition to offering fast, simple power adjustment, this knob has an LED indicator that changes color to display different information about the controller.

A solid green LED light on the control knob will signal that the unit is connected to your trailer's brakes.


This knob lets you set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. Typically, this power is only readjusted when you experience changing road conditions or if you switch over from a heavy, loaded trailer to a much lighter, empty trailer, or vice versa. To get more power to your brakes, rotate the switch clockwise. To decrease the power output, rotate it counterclockwise.


Redarc Tow Pro Classic Brake LED Intensity

When you apply the tow Jeep Liberty's brakes, a red LED light will signal that power is being sent back to the trailer brakes. As you increase brake power with the control knob, the light will glow brighter, indicating the increased braking power.


This light will also glow at its brightest when the manual override is activated. To engage the manual override, just push down on the control knob and the trailer's brakes will activate with an intensity that matches the preset power level on the controller. Once you stop adjusting the power, or once the override is released, the LED light will fade to its normal appearance. This is designed to be easier on your eyes at night, while still presenting a visual indicator.


Simple, Out-of-the-Way Installation

The Tow-Pro Classic comes in 2 pieces - the main electronic unit and the control knob. Because the only part that you need to be able to access is the control knob, the main unit can be mounted in an out-of-the-way location. So you no longer have to worry about a bulky brake controller scraping against your leg or causing interference with your Jeep Liberty's lower airbags.

The dash-mountable control knob can be mounted in a convenient spot that is easy for you to see and access. This can be a blank switch panel, an open area on your center console, or wherever there's space on your dashboard.


Once you have determined where to mount the control knob, you will want to find a good place to install the main unit. The only mounting restriction for the unit is that the included 3' plug-in cable is able to reach between the main unit and the control knob.


The included connector plugs into the main unit so that, once wired, you can easily unplug and remove the unit if you need too. This connector does not come pre-wired. You will have to use 16-gauge wire (16-1-1 - sold separately) to make the connections between the connector and your Jeep Liberty.

Speaker 1: Today we're taking a look at the Redarc Tow Pro classic trailer brake controller. This brake controller is designed to activate your trailer's electric or electric over hydraulic brakes when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle. And this brake controller activates your trailer brakes with a preset intensity, so the signal is sent to the trailer brakes when the tow vehicle's brakes are activated. Immediate activation is great for offroading.The control knob, which is this portion here, mounts in the dash or other easily accessible area inside the cab of the vehicle. Nice, small design. The knob right here has a diameter of about 5/8 of an inch, so what you see right here is what's visible from within your vehicle.

This allows for fast and easy adjustment of braking power, with the simple turn of the dial.Now, for lighter braking, you would turn the knob to a lower number. For heavier braking, you'd turn the knob to a higher number. It also provides accessible manual override. All you have to do is press the knob to activate the manual override, which applies the trailer brakes only. So that's designed to be used when the trailer brakes need to be applied without the vehicle brakes, such as a situation where you're trying to correct trailer sway when traveling.It also offers simple diagnostics.

Located right above the control knob is a small LED. So when this is in sleep mode, the LED will be green in color, and it'll fade in and out. When the trailer's connected, it'll be solid green, and when brakes are applied, it'll transition from green to red as you press on the brakes in the vehicle. The main unit, which is the control box right here, this installs completely out of sight, so maybe behind a panel or behind the dash of the vehicle. It can be mounted in any orientation.

Great thing about that is there's no more hitting your knees as you get into or out of your vehicle, so no more bulky controllers, no interference with airbags or other vehicle accessories, and no hard-to-reach override lever or impossible-to-reach screen.The control knob and the main unit connect using the included cable, which measures around 40 inches long. And then the main unit right here connects to your vehicle's wiring directly, or by using a brake control harness. The vehicle wires, or the harness wires, insert into this plug right here, which then inserts into the main unit.The product is made in Australia. It's designed for trailers with up to three axles or six brake assemblies. It's designed for use with electric or electric over hydraulic trailer brakes, and it works with 12 volt vehicle electrical systems.

Now, the main unit right here, it's a nice, small, compact unit. Edge to edge going this direction, it's about 3 15/16 of an inch. Going this direction, 3 3/8, and then the overall thickness is about 1 1/8 inches.You'll notice that it has the mounting bracket built into it, so you can easily mount this with zip ties or some hardware. The control knob right here requires a 3/8 inch diameter hole for installation, and a 1/8 inch diameter hole for the LED. Mounting template is included I the instructions.And then it has this nice backplate right here, which is just an adhesive backing. So you would mount that directly to your panel or to your dash, wherever you're mounting the knob. And it has the numbers on it, it has a little spot for the LED to come through, and then it has the Redarc logo down here at the bottom. But again, once installed, this portion right here is the only portion that's gonna be visible from within the vehicle. So it's completely out of the way.Output voltage range is nine volts to 16 volts. Output current rating is 25 amps continuous, and the maximum charging voltage is 12 volt DC. Took me a while to finally get over the price of this brake controller and I'm glad I finally did. It was an easy install, and the control knob was mounted in a perfect spot out of the way and unobtrusive. Exactly why I bought it. I'm very pleased. I installed it myself, but if you are not familiar with wiring then letting a pro install it for you might be the way to go. I personally do not like progressive rate controllers so this is a perfect fit to go in my Jeep JK Wrangler. 500221

I’ve been eyeing these Red Arc controllers up for a while. I have a new Cherokee (KL) and there is NO good place for a brake controller in this vehicle. The cabin is tight and there is a knee air bag that prevents traditional mounting under the steering wheel. I ended up mounting the control knob in the dash, next to the headlight switch and everything seems to be working well, so far. The only complaint I have is that I feel the construction of the control knob assembly and controller housing are a bit cheap compared to the cost. I mean really, it wouldn’t take much effort/cost to pot the electrical components which would result in waterproof and more durable components. Overall though, I’m pretty happy with the controller so far and would purchase again. I may pick up the pro model for my Dodge Ram as I do appreciate not having a big controller hanging off the bottom of the dash. 476794
