Hopkins Brake Controller - HM47295

Proportional brake controller can be easily mounted. Digital display indicates braking action of trailer. Fine-tune power adjustment has 5 levels so that you can set braking intensity to suit your towing needs.

Features:

  • Brake controller activates trailer brakes in proportion to your vehicle's braking action
    • Automatically adjusts trailer's braking based on deceleration of tow vehicle
    • Activates immediately - no pausing like with time-delayed brake controllers
  • Multiple mounting options
    • Position at any angle up or down in the vertical plane
      • Recommended mounting is between -20 degrees and 70 degrees
  • 5 Sensitivity levels let you adjust initial braking power and aggressiveness
  • Digital display is easy to read
  • Built-in, slide manual override lever
  • Pigtail harness hardwires into your vehicle

Specs:

  • Application: trailers with up to 4 axles (8 brake assemblies)
    • Designed for use with electric brakes only
  • Dimensions: 3" wide x 5" long x 1-1/4" tall
  • Limited lifetime warranty

Proportional Braking

With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently. So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner.

As long as the Agility controller sits level on a horizontal plane and is pointed in the direction of travel, it will sense - via an internal inertia sensor - how your tow vehicle brakes. This inertia-based sensor responds to the deceleration of your tow vehicle as you brake by signaling the controller to send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Power and Sensitivity Adjustment

Getting the braking power you need for your application is simple with the Agility. First, set the overall power so that you can achieve maximum braking without locking up your trailer brakes.

Once you have the overall power set, you can fine-tune the power output by adjusting the sensitivity of the internal sensor. Use the adjustment buttons on the top of the controller to achieve your desired degree of intensity. There are 5 levels to choose from. The first level offers the least amount of sensitivity, making it ideal for lightweight setups. The heavier your load, the higher you will want to take the sensitivity. At level 5, the sensitivity of the internal sensor is as high as it can go. This level provides the most aggressive braking and is ideal for heavy loads.

Digital Display

On the front of the Agility there is a digital display that is designed to keep you aware of the braking action of your trailer. This screen shows your sensitivity level, overall power percentage and error codes for issues such as a short circuit.

Simple Installation

The Hopkins Agility is recommended to be mounted in your cab at an angle that is between -20 degrees and 70 degrees to make it easier to access.

Correct Agility mounting90-Degree Agility mounting

Note: The Agility must be mounted on a level horizontal (side-to-side) plane and must be lined up with the direction of travel for the internal sensor to function properly.

This brake controller is designed to be hardwired into your vehicle.

Installation Accessories

I wanted to add brakes to my VRV flyer… it’s very lightweight, but I’m pulling it with a Ford Ranger. My internet and local searches left me feeling that etrailer.com was the authority on the subject of brake controllers! Their ETBC7 install kit was VERY complete. I’m sure I saved a ton just by not having to make multiple runs to the hardware store for those items I hadn’t foreseen! Installation of the Hopkins Agility brake controller and the 7 pin plug took me longer than it would take most… It was Texas hot, so I only worked a few hours in the AM and in the PM. I’m old… retired, and not in a hurry! Toward the end of day one, I dropped a circuit breaker down in the abyss of the engine compartment. Day two AM was spent dissembling the wheel well housing to retrieve it! I’m very pleased with the neat, clean install, thanks in a large part to etrailer.com’s vehicle specific video and their wiring diagram. I heartily recommend them! SG 268468

Products were just what I ordered, but I paid for 3-5 day shipping and received my order three days late. When I open the shipping box one of the packages had not been packed tight and had broken open, spilling the mounting hardware all over the place. Luckily all the hardware had stayed in the shipping box. 404486

The brake controller + wiring harness is a good price, but unfortunately the 2016 Subaru Forester is not factory-ready for a brake controller. Had the Subaru dealer install it, which cost $336, but I can go back to them if there are any problems and I wanted to negate any warranty issues with Subaru. Haven't pulled the Ural motorcycle on the trailer yet, so have not had a chance to fool with the power and sensitivity levels. The 7-pin hookup works fine as far as running lights, brake lights and turn signals. 249814

I installed this in my '02 Toyota Tundra to pull a 20' hybrid camper. This truck doesn't have a plug and play option so used the wiring kit etrailer sells ETB7. Installed pretty easily. The way the unit connects to the mount is a little strange and difficult unless you have a lot of room on either side of the controller to fit a socket, which I did not. The red brake signal wire was too short to reach to brake switch wire in the truck, so had to splice in some extra. I've only pulled the trailer a few miles so far, but it actuated the brakes fine, and the override switch works well too. 178283

etrailer.com made my product selection easy. They even showed the recommended wiring adapter without me having to search for it separately. This brake controller was easy to install and setup. This, in addition to a good price, made my purchase and installation easy. I would definitely choose them again for my camper and towing needs. 492582

Excellent. I hooked this Hopkins controller up with the specified harness and after plugging it into the Factory OEM plus on my Honda Ridgline, all I had to do was add a 20amp fuse as they don't put it in the Ridgeline from the factory, but the manual does list that. Worked like a champ! This proportional controller allows my Ridgeline with the trailer to feel as if there is nothing on the truck when I'm breaking. Seems as if there is no trailer connected as compared to when I have pulled with electronic braking where you never seem to get the settings just right. 54187

Review from a similar Hopkins Agility in Brake Controller

I was able to install the brake controller in less than five minutes once I located the plug underneath my dash. Etrailer had a video that even showed where to look on my vehicle. This unit is very easy to adjust and it is flawless so far. I had already purchased a controller in a local retailer's store but they didn't carry the adapter I needed in order to install the unit. Etrailer.com had both units in stock and $20.00 less than my local store. I chose this unit because of the plug and play features and I know that if I want to change vehicles, I just need to purchase the corresponding adapter and I can easily transfer my Agility controller into my new vehicle. The shipping was fast and low cost. Etrailer.com was my last stop during this project but they will be my first stop for my next trailer project!! 35377

Though I haven't had the opportunity to try the brake control the wire harness I ordered for my 2002 chevy silveroda and Control went in with no problems 540714

Any of our controllers can be removed when not in use. Some are easier to remove than others. I have added links to controllers that have removable plugs for the harness and slide-in or snap-on style brackets so that no screws have to be removed to remove the controller.

This is a great product, and works perfectly for me. It is very easy to install; literally plug-and-play. I’m very satisfied w/ this unit. I had issue finding the factory installed brake control connecting cable on new 2016 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum. Had to take vehicle back to dealership and it took them 2 hours to locate and unwrap the connecting cable. I installed Hopkins Agility controller under dash above gas pedal (best location). Tight spot; used socket in hand to snug the 2 screws on right side of bracket. I remove the unit and secure the wiring under the dash (leaving installed bracket) when not towing. 315920

Review from a similar Hopkins Agility in Brake Controller

Just finished installing my Hopkins brake controller with the plug in wire harness for my Toyota Tacoma. Couldn't have been simpler. Took about 10 minutes. Took longer to find the factory connector which was part of the tow package on my truck. Nice product, also reached out to the tech department last night around 11pm and had the answer this morning at 7:30 am. That's great service, could have gotten it a little cheaper through another site, mainly because of free shipping but quality service like this is worth plenty. If I need any trailer accessories again etrailer will be who I call. 403544

  • Parts Needed to Install a Brake Controller on a 1996 Jeep Cherokee
  • In order to activate the brakes on your trailer with your 1996 Jeep Cherokee you would need to install a 4-way trailer connector, 4 to 7-way trailer connector, and a brake controller. The 4 to 7-way converter your trailer came with would not allow the vehicle to activate all functions of the trailer. The wire bundle will be held together with a white tag and possibly taped to another harness. The wire colors will not match color for color with the brake controller wiring...

  • Hard-wire Installation of Hopkins Brake Controller in 2013 GMC Sierra
  • To hard-wire a Hopkins brake controller such as their # HM47295 in your 2013 GMC Sierra you will make connections between the 4 wires on the controller unit and vehicle wiring that is under the steering column. I have linked a photo showing the location and appearance of this bundle of blunt-cut wires. These are the wires for the tow package for the brake controller. • Troubleshooting Brake Controller Not Working When Brakes Are Applied but Works With Override Switch
  • This sounds like the trailer brakes are not receiving the signal from the brake controller when you apply the brakes. It should not have a signal at any other time. Use a circuit...

  • I spoke with my contact at Hopkins about your Reliance 47285 brake controller only adjusting down to 10 percent and he told me that Hopkins changed their Reliance brake controllers a while back so that 10 is the lowest possible setting. Unless you have an older brake controller, 10 is going to be the lowest setting possible. Some troubleshooting steps that you can take to verify that there is not an issue is to inspect the ground wire to ensure it is clean and mounted to a good ground...

  • Curt TriFlex Trailer Brake Controller Does Not Power On
  • First, lets just make sure you are using the correct wiring harness. For a 2012 Nissan Pathfinder it is # C51382. What you will want to do is check the black wire. There should be power on the black wire leading to the controller. If there is no power leading to the controller then you will need to check the owners manual for all of the fuse/relays locations related to the tow package wiring and brake controller wiring. Chances are that it is just missing a fuse or relay. If you are...
