Time-Delayed Braking

The Activator applies your trailer's brakes when the brake pedal in your tow vehicle is engaged. Every time you apply the brakes in your Jeep Liberty, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the Activator. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. Both the amount of braking power (output) and rate of application (sync) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, type of trailer and size of the load. To determine which levels are best for your application, you must test out your towing setup and choose what feels best.

A time-delay controller is so named because there is a delay between the time that you initially apply the brakes in your tow vehicle and the time that the controller reaches maximum power output. Unlike a proportional brake controller, which activates your trailer's brakes based on the deceleration of your tow vehicle, the Activator sends power out in the same way, with the same gradual delay, no matter the braking situation. Although this delay always exists, it can be adjusted by changing the sync setting.

Sync Settings

To adjust the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking action, use the slide control on the side of the Activator to change the sync setting. If you want to reach maximum power output faster, move the switch forward. To get smoother braking action, move the switch backward, thus supplying power to the trailer brakes more gradually. You can alter the sync setting to suit your driving preferences or to improve handling based on changing road conditions or varied trailer loads.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. As a result, mounting options are limitless, so long as you can still easily access the controller.

Installation of the Activator requires that you either purchase a custom wiring adapter designed to plug into the controller or that you hardwire the controller directly into your Jeep Liberty. To hardwire the Activator, you must remove the plug at the end of the integrated wiring harness.

Installation Accessories

For easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter (sold separately) is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your Jeep Liberty, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.

Note: If a custom brake-control wiring adapter is not available for your Jeep Liberty, a 20-amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) will be required.

Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Activator Trailer Brake Controller Review

Today we're going to review part number 5100. This is the Draw-Tite activator time delay trailer brake controller. It is designed to fit trailers for 1 to 2 axles. It does come with everything showing here: the mounting bracket, the mounting hardware. This brake controller will activate your trailer brakes with a preset intensity. The signal is sent to the trailer brakes when you're tow vehicle's brakes are activated. On the very front here, you can see there's a sliding switch.

This is the adjustable output control. This will let you determine the amount of braking force. Basically if you go that way, you can see where it's lighter. That's the maximum. You'll set it to the maximum when you're going to travel through a hilly terrain with a fully-loaded trailer. Then if you want to back it off, you want to do that; back off the power outflow 00:00:45 when you're going to tow a lightweight trailer or an empty trailer. On the side here, you'll see there's also a sink setting.

The sink setting will let you adjust the aggressiveness with which the brakes are activated. If you look real closely, there's a plus sign and a minus sign. This will be towards the front of your tow vehicle. This will be towards the rear of it. Basically to get the full power output faster, you'll move the switch forward. The plus sign, this will increase the activation speed.

If you want to achieve smoother braking, you could move it in the opposite direction; that will supply your power gradually. On the very front, you'll see there's a bob here. This is an LED light. This will indicate on the front of your unit, it will show when your trailer's brakes are applied. The light will glow brighter as the power output increases. I'm going to show you that in a minute.

It has the built-in slide bar manual override that you can activate the brakes immediately. It's a very quick and easy installation, because it's a time-delayed brake controller. There's no need to mount it level, like the proportionals. You can mount it in any direction. The mounting bracket, again, and the hardware is all included. If you notice, it has a plug on the end. We do recommend if it's available for your vehicle, to get the plug-in vehicle-specific brake controller adapter. We do sell those separately. You can find out if there's one available for your vehicle by just going on to our website, under the fit guide, and seeing if they list one that will plug on. A vehicle-specific brake controller adapter will have a plug that will plug into the brake controller. The other end of it will have a plug that will plug into the factory port on your vehicle. If they don't have one for your vehicle, you can get also a plug that will plug into this brake controller, and the other end would be 4 pigtail wires that you could hard-wire into your vehicle. Now getting the application on this brake controller, is for trailers with up to 2 axles or 4 brake assemblies. It is designed for use with electric brakes only. Again, I want to show you I have a plug-in hooked to a 12-O 00:02:54 power source. What we're going to do is go ahead and attach the brake controller; it snaps right in. Then what I'm going to do is go ahead and turn on the power, so we got 12-O power. Then what I'm going to do is I'm going to show you when you apply the brakes, if you watch that red LED light when your brakes are applied, you'll notice that that red LED light will come on. Put it up, you can see it better. Here you go, that's showing that your brakes are being applied, or also when your manual slide is being applied, that will come on. What you also notice, I have it up to maximum. You notice when you push the manual, it will go from a dim bulb, and as you push it up to the maximum, it will get a brighter bulb. If you turn it down some, like in the middle, you can see as you push it up, it won't go up to maximum, because you got the output set in the middle there. That should do it for the review on part number 5100, the Draw-Tite activator time delay trailer brake controller for trailers with 1 to 2 axles. .

Working Perfectly. I live in a large metropolitan area, so there is a lot of traffic, meaning there is a lot of braking before we get out of town. No issues!!

The product and instructions are very good. The only reason I did not give an excellent rating is that instruction can be more clear about the ground connection of the unit. I do not think that is necessary to ground the unit all the way to the battery negative terminal (as shown in the wiring chart). It is comber some to do that since another 10 gage wire would need to thread through the engine firewall and rout all the way to the battery. It is sufficient just to use a solid metal underneath the dash and attach it to that location. I have to give a great paradise to the sales people that my unit was shipped on the same day. 98742

Although I replaced my Activator II with an Activator; both units ended up being fine.... After replacing the Activator II, after further troubleshooting, I found that I had two independent problems. 1. The brake power wire (blue) was corroded in the truck outlet 7 way receptacle; which I replaced. 2. The actuator brake activation wire (red) was no longer getting power out of the trailer wiring plug unit located under the dash. This was resolved but cutting that wire near the harness plug, and splicing it with the cold side of the brake pedal unit’s brake light wire (white). Your wiring diagrams on the subject proved very helpful in the solution..... 472647

Great experience. I had asked if someone could double check all my select tons. Jameson C responded within a few hours with clear confirming comments in my choices. Parts (hitch, harness,e-brake and harness) arrived in one box well packaged. No damage. All of the information on the site was spot on. Took me far less time to install but the videos were exact. I will be a return customer. 337514

This controller worked perfectly for my situation, the install was super easy, the entire install took 15 minutes, the hardest part was finding the wiring harness under the dash. The slide dial for more or less braking power was so easy to dial in and the manual slide bar was easy and convenient. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who tows an rv or trailer with electric brakes 378467

Let me start by saying etrailer.com is the way to go. There prices even with shipping are about the same, if not cheaper, than a brick and mortar store with a lot more to choose from. Shipping was very fast and everything installed and worked in about 15 minutes. That being said, I'm not real impressed with the brake controller. It's about as basic as it gets. No numerical output reading, just a little red light that is supposed to get brighter the harder you push your brakes. Kind of hard to tell when the sun is out. It does work, and if bare bones is what you want, this would probably work for you. I will be calling or emailing to see about an exchange. I would rather spend an extra $10-20 and get something a little nicer. Will let you know how that goes. 43619

Not only did my packages arrive in a timely manner, but George kept me posted ont their progress every mile of the way. When I got the brake controller, it was everything the said it would be, and along with my final email from etrailer was a link to instructions for installing it and another link to questions and answers about the product and the installation process. How could anyone possibly ask for more. Thank you George, and thank you etrailer. 468070

Works perfectly. I had to order the adapter for my truck (F-150), but used the etrailer website to make sure I received the correct one and it works great! I've used etrailer a few times now and haven't had any problems. 284254

needed a brake controller for my nissan titan to use the electric brakes on my 33 ft travel trailer. Install was easy, took about 10 mins to read instructions and install in truck. Brake controller works great and comes in a small size so it dont get in they way of leg space under dash. Also like it can be installed in any position unlike others that have to be level to work. 396781

by:

Brake controller installation It took longer that it should have to connect the controller, but I was being very careful, I would check and then double check to make sure everything was alright. I wanted to do a nice clean job so I took my time. The hardest part was making sure I had the right wire connected for the brake signal to the controller, but even that was not difficult to do. I took some pictures of when I started a task and the end result. I will probably move the controller from the ash tray area at a later date, but for now it is fine where it's at since I don't smoke and I don't let anyone else smoke in my truck. 4920

I was very pleased with not only this but all of my purchases from etrailer over the last few weeks as I restored and added brakes to the axles on my old equipment trailer. Not only was etrailer the source for all the parts I needed but also the source of the information I needed to make informed product choices along with educating me on how to do the job myself. Saving me alot of $$$$. etrailer.com seems to be the best in the business and obviously not by accident Thank you VERY much James 360233

I was replacing my brake controller with the same one. The previous one was used for two different popup campers and was giving me trouble. The one I bought from etrailer worked as good as the old one . I am very pleased with my purchase. I have recommended your site to friends when they need trailer parts! 369009

I LIKE HOW YOU DO BUSINESS. Did have one issue, I must have overlooked the fact i needed the wiring harness from the controller to my truck. Not sure how i missed this during my ordering process. 2006 Chevrolet Silverado Truck 518160

For your 2006 Chevrolet Silverado truck you will need part # 3015-P
Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - GM
$8.95
. This Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter plugs into the back of the activator brake controller and the other end plugs in under the dash. 3015-P will be the only part you need if your Silverado has a factory 7-way. If your vehicle did not come equipped with the factory 7-way plug you will need one of two parts. If the Silverado has a bundle of wires above the spare tire you will need to wire in part # PK11898
Pollak 7-Pole, RV-Style Trailer Connector Socket w/ Wiring Harness and Mounting Bracket
$57.51
to finish the wiring. If the Silverado has a round plug with a cap then you will need part # 30955
Replacement Custom Multi-Tow 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connectors
$26.98
that will plug into the existing plug, giving you a 7 way connection.

All brake controllers wire pretty much the same with a white ground wire, a black power wire a red brake switch wire and a blue brake feed wire that goes to the trailer brakes. If you would...

  • Trailer Brake Controller Wont Light Up and Trailer Brakes Do Not Work Even with Manual Override

Since the manual override does not activate the brakes then we know there is a problem with the output signal reaching the trailer. What you can do to make sure it goes to sleep is exit the truck after turning it off, walk away for 15 minutes or so, then come back and peek in through the window to see if it has turned off. Of course you could always unplug the controller if you wanted. If it has not, there may be a wiring issue or something causing the controller...

  • Installing a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500
  • To install a brake controller on a 2008 GMC Sierra, you will need to locate the brake controller wire bundle under the dash. You will need to look below the steering column and to the left of the brake pedal. The wire bundle will be held together with white tape. The white tape should also list the functions of the wires. We have found that the red wire on the truck connects to the black wire on the brake controller for power. The dark blue wire on the truck connects to the brake controller...

  • What Does E2 Error Code Indicate on Reliance Electric Brake Controller
  • I contacted our representative at Hopkins about the E2 code that is showing on the Reliance Brake Controller. The representative informed me that this code is an indication of a short on the Blue brake controller wire. What he will need to do is inspect the Blue wire from the brake controller back for any cut, frayed or exposed wiring. A way to check whether the short is on the tow vehicle or the trailer is to stop and disconnect the trailer wiring. If the E2 code still shows on the...

  • What is Needed to Wire a Brake Controller on a 1996 Dodge Ram Pickup
  • If your 1996 Dodge Ram has the factory 7-way connector at the rear of the vehicle, then all of the wires for the brake controller have been run. You will just need a brake controller wiring adapter. I recommend using part # 3020-S. This adapter plugs into the brake controller plug under the dash, to the left of the steering column taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. The four pigtail wires on the other end will be butt-connected to the brake controller, color to color. If...

  • Brake Controller Installation on 1998 Chevy Suburban
  • GM did not start using the port under the dash until the 1999 model year. You will need to hardwire the controller into the existing vehicle wiring. Depending on what the tow package on your vehicle included, some of the wiring might be in place. Does the Suburban already have a trailer connector? If so, is it a 4-pole or a 7-Way? GM typically ran a blue and an orange wire from the rear of the vehicle up to the engine bay that terminates under the brake booster. In a 12 year old...

  • Brake Controller and Wiring Harness for a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 with Factory Tow Package
  • Since your 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 already has what is called a factory tow package, all you will need is the Draw-Tite Brake Controller, part # 5100, that you have referenced and the Tekonsha Wire Replacement for Dodge, part # 3020-P. The # 3020-P harness will plug into the back of the brake controller and the plug on the other end will plug into the factory brake controller port located under the dash, above the emergency brake pedal. I have also included a video installation of a proportional...

  • Brake Control Installation Instructions for a 1996 Chevrolet C/K Pickup
  • You will need to hard wire the Draw-Tite 2-4 Brake Electronic Brake Controller - Time Delayed, item # 5100, on your 1996 Chevrolet CK Pickup. Hard wiring is straight forward and fairly easy to do. We have instructions and a video that I have linked below for you. From the Brake controller here are your connections. White wire to negative battery post. Black wire through a 20 amp circuit breaker, item # PK54520 (included in kit), to the positive battery post. Red wire to the stop...

  • Wire Diagram for Installing a Voyager Brake Controller on a 2002 Ford F-250
  • On your 2002 Ford F-250 you will need to connect the Red wire to the Black wire on the brake controller for +12 Volts power and the Light Green wire to the Red Stoplight wire on the brake controller. The Dark Blue wire is connected to the Blue wire from the brake controller to send power to the Trailer Brakes, and the White wires are connected to each other providing a ground for the brake controller. I posted a diagram with your wire colors added to it for you, see drawing at right. The...

  • Trailer Brakes are Locking Up Causing Trailer Tires to Skid
  • Assuming that your trailer brakes are properly adjusted, it sounds like you just need to make some small adjustments to the settings on your Draw-Tite Activator. Ideally, you want the brake controller adjusted so it'll deliver enough power for effective braking, but not so much that wheels lock up and the trailer skids. You'll want to be sure the trailer is loaded as it usually is. In an open area, such as a large parking lot, drive forward and apply the trailer brakes using the Manual...

  • Motorhome Brake Control Install
  • Brake controllers are not vehicle specific items so there are not diagrams available for individual vehicles. We do have a help page on installing brake controllers that will walk you through the process, but I will briefly run through the process to give you an idea of what has to be done. Most brake controllers have 4-Wires, typically they are: blue, black, red and white. The white wire is a ground, so it needs to be connected to any solid ground point. The red wire is the stop light...

  • Troubleshooting Tekonsha Voyager Brake Controller
  • When the LED of the Voyager shows any other color than green, it means that voltage is reaching the trailer brake magnets. Since activating the e brake does not typically cause the brake lights to illuminate, the LED on the controller would remain green. Since the Voyager is a proportional controller, applying the foot brake will not send voltage to the trailer brakes if the vehicle is stopped, the brake controller requires the vehicle to be moving in order to send voltage to the trailer...

  • Functions of Each Wire Color on Tekonsha Brake Controller and Installation On a 2012 Chevy Silverado
  • On the Tekonsha Envoy and all brake controllers the four wire colors will be, white is ground, black is 12 volt power, blue goes out to the trailer connector, and red is in from the stop light circuit on the brake switch. I am including a link to a FAQ page on trailer brake controllers. On your 2012 Chevrolet Silverado, if you have the factory 7-way connector on your vehicle you will just run the brake controller wires to a bundle of 4 or 5 blunt cut wires that are located under the...

  • Is a Brake Controller Needed for Activating the Brakes of a Boat Trailer with Surge Brakes
  • Your trailer has surge brakes on it so you do not need to install a brake controller to activate them. Surge brakes use the inertia of a vehicle trying to stop the trailer to compress the hydraulic fluid in the master cylinder which then transfers to the brake assemblies and activates the trailer's brakes. Since your trailer has a 5-pin socket this would indicate that it has an electric lockout solenoid. What an electric lock out does is prevent the fluid from being sent to the brake...
