Time-Delayed Braking

The Blackbird applies your trailer's brakes when the brake pedal in your tow vehicle is engaged. Every time you apply the brakes in your Ford F-150, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the Blackbird. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. Both the amount of braking power (output) and rate of application (ramp time) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, type of trailer, and size of the load. To determine which levels are best for your application, you must test out your towing setup and choose what feels best.

A time-delay controller is so named because there is a delay between the time that you initially apply the brakes in your tow vehicle and the time that the controller reaches the set maximum power output. Unlike a proportional brake controller, which activates your trailer's brakes based on the deceleration of your tow vehicle, the Blackbird sends power out in the same way, with the same user-set delay, no matter the braking situation. Although this delay always exists, it can be adjusted by changing the ramp time setting. The controller will continue to send out power to the trailer brakes as long as your foot is on the brake pedal, even when your truck and trailer have come to a stop.

Built-In Controls on the Blackbird

Blackbird Controls

The diagram above shows the controls and components of the Hayes Blackbird electric trailer brake controller.

Power Output Control

The power output control lets you set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. Typically, the power output is only readjusted if you switch from a heavy, loaded trailer to a much lighter, empty trailer - or vice versa.

During the initial setup process, use the thumbwheel on top of the Blackbird to adjust the output. To get more power to your brakes, rotate the dial to the right. To decrease the power output, move it to the left.

The output setting will appear on the digital display when you press the brake pedal or activate the manual override. This setting ranges from 5 percent to 99 percent, with 99 percent indicating maximum output.

Power Ramp Time Setting

Power ramp time is the elapsed time from the point that the brakes are first applied to the point that the set power output reaches its maximum. This setting is responsible for determining the aggressiveness of the braking action.

To adjust the ramp time, use the control on the side of the Blackbird. If you want to reach maximum power output faster, move the control forward. To get smoother braking action, slide the control backward, thus supplying power to the trailer brakes more gradually. You can alter this setting to suit your driving preferences or to improve handling based on changing road conditions or varied trailer loads.

The digital display will only show the ramp setting as you adjust it. After a few seconds, it will revert back to display mode.

Digital Display

The Blackbird features an easy-to-read LED screen that displays the power settings as you adjust them.

While braking, the display shows the amount of power going to the trailer brakes as a percentage of the total power available. When the brake pedal is released, the unit will go into standby mode.

The display will also show trouble codes to alert you to any potential problems, such as a short circuit or an open circuit. A code will also appear if the brake controller surpasses its rated power limit.

Slide-Bar Manual Override

The manual slide lever overrides the preset power output and allows the operator to engage the trailer brakes without using the vehicle's brakes. In addition to being a necessary safety feature, this option helps to control trailer sway by slowing the trailer to put it back solidly behind the tow Ford F-150.

You can also engage the manual override to help you move a sliding 5th-wheel hitch closer to your truck's tailgate for tight maneuvering during slow speed turns. Just apply the manual override to hold the trailer in place while slowly moving the tow vehicle forward.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle or position it in any particular direction. As a result, mounting options are limitless, so long as you can still easily access the manual override.

Installation of the Blackbird requires that you either purchase a custom wiring adapter designed to plug into the controller or that you hardwire the controller directly into your Ford F-150. To hardwire the Blackbird, you must remove the plug at the end of the integrated wiring harness.

Installation Accessories

The Hayes vehicle-specific, dual-mated wiring adapter is available for most newer trucks and SUVs with tow packages. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your Ford F-150's brake controller port, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.

Hayes also offers a universal wiring harness (HA81789-HBC - sold separately) that plugs into any Hayes brake controller. The 4 leads on the universal harness can then be hardwired into your Ford F-150. By splicing the universal adapter into your wiring instead of directly connecting the brake controller to your wiring, you gain the ability to unplug and remove the controller from your Ford F-150 should the need arise.

  • If a custom brake-control wiring adapter is not available for your Ford F-150, one of the following will be required:
    • 20-Amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) for 2-brake applications
    • 30-Amp circuit breaker (38630 - sold separately) for 4- to 6-brake applications
    • 40-Amp circuit breaker (9510 - sold separately) for 6- to 8-brake applications
  • If you're hardwiring the controller, it is also suggested that you install an in-line fuse between the controller and the stop light switch (required on 1999 and newer Fords).

See also's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Video Transcript for Hayes Brake Controller HA81726 Review

Today we'll be reviewing part number HA81726. This is the Hayes Blackbird Trailer Brake Controller for 1 to 4 Axles. This is a time delayed brake controller. The brake controller is going to activate your trailer's brakes with preset intensity levels. The signal is then sent to the trailer brakes when the tow vehicle's brakes are activated. It does have adjustable power output that's going to let you determine the amount of power sent to the brakes of the trailer. You can set it to a higher output when towing in a hilly terrain or with a fully loaded trailer or you can back off the power when towing a lightweight or empty trailer. Over on this side we have the power ramp time setting that lets you adjust the aggressiveness with which the brakes are activated.

You can get full power or faster by moving the switch forward to increase activation speed or you can achieve a smoother braking by moving the switch in the opposite direction to supply power gradually. On the front it's going to feature an easy-to-read LED display that's going to communicate the brake power output, ramp setting and also error codes. This system does feature built-in safeguards that are designed to protect your vehicle and your trailer. As a manual override this is going to illuminate the brake lights on the tow vehicle and your trailer. As a current limiter that's going to protect the vehicle from shorts in the trailer wiring and it also has a hazard flasher immunity that's going to prevent pulsing of the brakes when the flashers on the vehicle are activated. Here on the front it also features and easy-to-access slide-bar manual override. It's made from a solid-state construction.

It's a quick and easy installation with the quick attachment. This can be mounted at any angle in any plane and in any direction. The mounting bracket and the hardware are all included. Hayes offers plug-in, vehicle-specific brake control adapters, which are sold separately, and those can be used for certain applications to help reduce the installation time. This is designed to be used with trailers with up to 4 axles or 8 brake assemblies. It's designed for use with the electric brakes or electric over hydraulic braking systems. This is going to give us a measurement of 3-3/4" in length, 3" in width and it's going to stand about 1" in height. That's going to do it for today's review of part number HA81726.

This is the Hayes Blackbird Trailer Brake Controller. .

  • Cause for Trailer Brake Controller to Display Error Code CF
  • You did not mention which trailer brake controller you have but since you viewed information about the Prodigy P2 # 90885 I reviewed the troubleshooting codes for that unit. The error code CF is not among those listed so I suspect you have another brand and model of controller. Since these error codes are often specific to the particular trailer brake controller I will need to know the brand and part number of the unit you have to be able to determine the cause. A Google search on that...

  • Troubleshooting OC Error Message on Hayes Blackbird Trailer Brake Controller HA81726
  • When the Hayes Blackbird Time-Delayed brake controller # HA81726 displays the error code OC this means that the controller senses that it has lost its electrical connection to the trailer's brake circuit. This code could be caused by many things: trapped water, dirt or corrosion inside the vehicle socket or trailer plug, or it could be due to a loose physical connection at the 7-way or at the blue wire at the back of the controller. The blue wire carries the output signal from the controller...

  • How to Set the Right Power Output on a Brake Controller when Towing a Trailer
  • For any brake controller, including the Hayes Blackbird # HA81726, the set up process is basically the same. You start by setting the controller to the mid point for power output. Then with the truck and trailer coupled together on level, dry ground, tow at about 20 miles per hour or so. Then apply the manual override on full (not the truck's brake pedal). If the trailer brakes lock up and skid, adjust the power down and do the test again. If braking is insufficient then adjust the power...

  • Does Hayes Blackbird Brake Control Wiring Harness Need Extra Ground Wire on 2014 Toyota Tundra
  • I think what you mean is does wiring harness # HA81785-HBC require a separate and additional ground wire for a 2014 Toyota Tundra. Good news! It doesn't. Only the Tekonsha brake controller wiring harness, # 3040-P, has that additional ground wire since the ground in the factory connection point is insufficient for the Tekonsha controllers. The Hayes harness # HA81785-HBC only uses the factory ground so no additional ground is needed for the controller to operate effectively and properly.
