Proportional Braking

With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking, or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently.

So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner.

As long as the I-Command is properly mounted according to the included instructions, the controller will automatically level, sense the tow vehicle's deceleration, and adjust the trailer's braking accordingly. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Power Boost for Heavy-Duty Towing

The I-Command offers a boost feature that gives you more initial braking power for times when you're towing heavy loads. You can switch boost levels so that the power output to your trailer brakes automatically starts out at either 14 percent or 28 percent of the predetermined power setting.

So, if you boost the initial power so that your trailer brakes activate with 25 percent of the overall intensity at the start, the brakes will reach maximum braking faster. This is particularly beneficial if you are towing a heavy load because the intensity required to stop that load may be far greater than that needed to halt your vehicle. Therefore, sending out more initial power to the trailer brakes - and causing them to reach maximum braking faster - allows you to better control the trailer so that it doesn't push your tow vehicle before coming to a complete stop.

If your trailer weighs less than your tow vehicle, no boost is needed. But if you wish to set the boost so that your trailer leads the braking of your towing setup, you can select level B1. The following table gives an indication of when you might use the different boost levels and the power increases that they offer.

Approximate Gross Trailer WeightBoost LevelIncrease in Initial Power Output
Less than tow vehicle GVWB114%
Equal to tow vehicle GVWB1 or B214% or 28%
Up to 25% more than tow vehicle GVWB1, B2, or B3* 28%
Up to 40% more than tow vehicle GVWB2 or B3* 28%

* Both B2 and B3 offer a 25-percent boost in initial power. But the braking curve for B3 is more aggressive than that of B2. This means that, even though you will start out with the same intensity when using these boost levels, you will get an overall more aggressive braking experience with the higher level. So if you use B3, you will reach maximum braking sooner than if you use B2.

Safety Features

The I-Command offers advanced safety features to prevent damage to various components of your towing setup. Integrated reverse battery protection shields the brake controller and your trailer's breakaway system from shorts.

If ever there is a time that you need to brake your trailer separately from your tow vehicle - when traveling down a steep incline, for example - the manual override lever is easily accessible. Pushing this lever engages the brakes on your trailer with full power.

LED Display

The I-Command has a digital LED display to keep you informed of your trailer's braking. The display shows the gain setting when the control is activated. It can also be used to check for connectivity with your trailer, to determine your boost setting, and to troubleshoot.

Automatic Leveling and Simple Installation

Because this controller operates with an internal inertia sensor, it must be mounted between -20 degrees and 70 degrees in the vertical plane. The I-Command must be mounted on a level horizontal (side-to-side) plane and must be lined up with the direction of travel for the internal sensor to function properly.

The automatic leveling feature of the I-Command ensures that the brake controller continues to function even as you drive up steep hills or through the mountains. Mount the controller at a vertical angle that is between 0 degrees (level) and 70 degrees, and the controller with level itself automatically.

Installation of the I-Command requires that you either purchase a custom wiring adapter designed to plug into the controller or that you hardwire the controller directly into your vehicle. To hardwire the controller, you must remove the plug at the end of the integrated wiring harness.

Installation Accessories

For easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter (sold separately) is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your vehicle, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.

For even easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter (sold separately) is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your vehicle, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.

Note: If a custom brake-control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, one of the following will be required:

20-Amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) for 2- to 4-brake applications

30-Amp circuit breaker (38630 - sold separately) for 6- to 8-brake applications

Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Brake Controller 5535 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Draw-Tite I-Command Proportional Trailer Brake Controller. This controller is going to activate the trailer brakes in proportion to your vehicle's braking action, it's going to automatically adjust the trailer's braking based on deceleration of the towed vehicle, and it activates immediately, so there's no pausing like when using time-delayed brake controllers. This unit's also going to automatically level. The brake control will automatically acquire the proper level setting, it's also going to automatically adjust as you travel up or down hills. A few unique features about this system. As you can see here, we have the easy to access buttons, we're going to have the boost setting right here on top and it says 'Boost' right here on the disc plate, so that way we know these button go with that setting. On this side we're going to have the gain control, and it says 'Gain' right there so we know that these buttons are associated with that control.

The boost setting is going to let you adjust the aggressiveness with which the brakes are activated, so this is setting is great in situations where you're hauling heavier loads or your trailer weight is significantly more than your vehicle weight. It's going to be available in three settings, you're going to have Boost 1, Boost 2, and Boost 3. It's going to allow you to get full power output faster by pressing the plus buttons right here, or the minus buttons to achieve maybe a smoother braking action. You can get full output power faster by pressing the plus button to increase the activation speed, and then you can achieve smoother braking by pressing the minus button to supply power gradually. Located right here at the front is going to be the easy to read digital display. This is going to be an LED display, it's going to show the controller activity.

The unit is short-circuit protected. On this side you're going to have the gain setting, this is going to establish the maximum amount of power available to the trailer brakes. As the gain increases, and you just the plus or minus buttons to do that, so it's very easy to adjust, but as that increases what that means is more power is going to be available to the brakes when the brake peddle in the vehicle is pressed or when the manual control is used. We do have the built in slide bar manual override right here at the front, very easily accessible. Gain is going to be shown from zero to ten, with zero being the minimum and ten being the maximum. That simply represents a percentage of the full power.

It's a quick and easy installation, your mounting bracket and hardware are included, and then it's going to be able to plug into a vehicle specific brake control adapter. Those are sold separately and can be used for certain applications to help reduce installation time. Again, this is designed for trailers with up to four axles or A-brake assemblies. It's designed for use with electric brakes only. When mounting this, you can mount this anywhere from -20 degrees nose down, anywhere to 70 degrees nose up in the vertical plane.

You want to make sure this is parallel with the direction of travel, but anywhere in between those indicators that I gave you, -20 degrees nose down or 70 degrees nose up, this is still going to be fully functional. All the leveling, the sensor inside, that's going to be functional as long as you stay within those increments, or those measurements of negative 20, 70 degrees nose up. Really nice design, it's a nice small compact unit as well. Here at the widest part it's only going to measure about 2-3/4" wide, and then the overall length is going to be about 4-1/4", and then the depth or the thickness is only 1-1/8". It's going to be covered with a unlimited lifetime warranty. Now what I want to do is I just want to show you how easily that display can be read. I'm just going to hook up a couple of wires here today just to send some power to it, I'm going to hook up a ground power then the power wire, and then we thumb through some of the settings and you can get an idea for how easy it is to read and how easy it is to see that display. NC is going to stand for Not Connected, but it's still going to allow us to kind of go through. We have our gain setting, you can see how that easily adjusts with a simple press of the button, and again you can go all the way up to ten, you can hold it down, which is going to allow you to adjust quicker, all the way up to ten. Then you can press individual to make finer adjustments, or you can hold it down and it's going to go all the way down to zero. You can adjust to anywhere in between that setting, really nice design. You're also going to have the manual override right here, which for me it's just saying I'm not connected, which is correct since I'm just feeding off a power box. Then you're going to have your boost setting. You're going to have Boost 1, Boost 2, Boost 3, then just the B shows you that you're in the boost settings, then you have 1, 2 and 3 to choose from. That's going to do it for today's look at the Draw Tite I-Command Proportional Trailer Brake Controller.

This has been the best and easiest purchase during my short journey of outfitting my 2008 Nissan Titan SE to haul a 27 ft camper. This has been the easiest install. If you're not mechanically inclined like myself no worries at all. It takes literally 5-10 mins to locate your quick connects and attach it to the dash. Once connected it automatically does everything else for you. You receive a set of directions just make sure you read them first and save yourself some money and do the install yourself. Once the camper was connected to the truck it was automatically detected. Can't get any easier than just connect and go. I would recommend strongly on purchasing this trailer brake connector/quick connect along with using this company. The shipping was extremely fast and communication was great prior to its arrival. 344916

Ordered this for my 2008 Toyota Tundra to be able to pull a 25 foot travel trailer. This has been the easiest install. It takes literally 5-10 minutes to locate your quick connects and attach it to the dash. I mounted it as close to the middle console to help keep it away from my knee and legs. I used a black magic marker to blend the screws into the black frame. Once connected it automatically does everything else for you. I would recommend strongly on purchasing this trailer brake connector/quick connect along with using this etrailer. The shipping was extremely fast and communication was great prior to its arrival. I watched a YouTube video on my truck to make it even easier to install. 371551

Comments: A) It was a challenge to find the correct wiring for the red control wire for my 3rd generation Toyota 4Runner (1996). It would sure be nice to have a pigtail adapter that worked with that model, but I understand there would be a million different types of pigtails. I have suggestions for anyone else in this predicament with a 4Runner. B) The wiring diagram for the Draw-tite I-command Brake Control suggests this is always active -- directly wired to battery. Instead of plugging unplugging the pigtail, a rocker switch would be good. What is the idle current (amperage) draw (drain on battery)? How about current draw while actively braking? This would specify the type of rocker C) There is little description of the "gain" setting (vs the "boost"). How is this value dialed in for a particular load and boost setting? switch. 391425

So far very well. The boost needs to be changed for highway vs city driving B1 vs B. Perhaps this is a function of the Casita brakes, but brakes grab & lock up if I dont reduce the boost in city driving.

Fast shipping, easy install, work good, recommended. With 2007 Lexus GX470 doesn't have any where to mount the controller so I put it on a middle near shifting handle. 451302

THE CONTROLLER MOUNTED EASILY AND PERFORMED AS STATED. I'VE BEEN CONTENT WITH THE DRAW-TITE DELAY STYLE CONTROLLER I USED FOR 30 YEARS BUT THE PROPORTIONAL STYLE 5535 IS A MUCH BETTER CONCEPT. IT ACTS LIKE THE TOW VEHICLES BRAKES BY APPLYING MORE BRAKE THE HARDER THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. I'VE ONLY USED IT ON ONE TRIP ON DRY ROADS WITH NO HARD STOPS SO IT MAY REQUIRE SOME TWEAKING THE MORE I USE IT. I TOW AN ENCLOSED 24 FOOT CAR TRAILER AND SET THE CONTROLLER MID RANGE ON BOTH SETTINGS AS MY STARTING POINT. 293519

This brake was very easy to install once I figured out where to mount it. A previous video I watched showed it mounted in a location that was too low (on the bottom of the panel) and hard to reach if needing to adjust while driving. I chose a location farther up but wasn't sure what was hiding behind the plastic so I chose to use the 3m Dual Lock fastener. This holds more securely than Velcro but it is still removable. I wasn't thrilled about having holes in my panel if I didn't like the location and wanted to move it so this was a great alternative. The brake seems to work well and is easy to adjust. The price from etrailer.com was great and it shipped quickly. 348822

So far it’s been great. I’ve only used it a few times but it is everything I wanted and needed. I recommend this product and your company to everyone I know that is looking for a trailer brake.

Hooked up the brake control with a vehicle specific adapter eliminating the chance for incorrect wiring or shorting of wires. Tried it out immediately after install & worked as designed. Using this to control the electric brakes on my popup camper pulled by a Tacoma. 256331

The whole process of adding a tow package to my vehicle seemed daunting but after watching the videos carefully and following all instructions, I was able to install the tow hitch, 7 pin, and this brake controller in only a few hours. I didn't have an existing tow package so it meant running new wires through the firewall, to the battery, and mounting the fuses. A little more than I thought I was getting into but like I said it was very easy to follow the instructions. I have used the controller to great success on our travel trailer. It gives me the control and confidence I need when hauling, especially when my family is with. 512332

I tried finding the controller I wanted locally which ended up costing more time and money Then it should have. One of the places I stopped at was getting info from etrailer web page then adding his ridiculous mark up. When I got back to my office I ordered it from etrailer myself and bought exactly what I was trying to find locally but for much less money even with two day shipping. Beyond all that etrailer is the easiest place to shop and their tracking of my shipment couldn't have been any easier. From here on out if etrailer has what I'm looking for life will be just that much better. Thanks etrailer. 388783

this really is the BEST trailer brake controller we have used. It is easy to tune and regulates the heavy horse trailer so smoothly that you do not feel it. However, do yourself AND the manufacturer a favor; If you have a High Performance ignition system such as CDI or have performance spark plug wires on your hot rod truck; put a 1000 uF or more 25 volt Filter Capacitor on the incoming 12 volts. If you do not, electronic interference will "scramble the microprocessor brain" in the unit. With the filter, no problem and the unit is wonderful. 450934

I installed this in my Jeep Grand Cherokee for pulling a travel trailer. We pulled the trailer from the Denver area all the way to the California coast. For anyone who has driven across 80, you know what challenges face a camper making that journey. No wonder pioneers left family heirlooms along the trail in the old days! This break controller made the trip possible for me. It worked well, and the trailer never ran the Jeep over. I remember engaging the trailer breaks quite a bit on the hill going into Salt Lake City. Worked like a charm! 454219

I wish I would have bought this controller last year when I bought my first camper. We upgraded to a new truck and the old controller wouldn't work so the GREAT team and ETRAILER told me this was the controller to get. Man were they RIGHT. I love that as soon as I hook up my trailer it tells me right on the controller that it is connected and when I unhook or don't have the plug seated fully it will tell me N.C(not connected). Hands down the best controller I have ever used and at a great price. 284541

Seems to be a wonderful product installed it in my 99 Dodge in about 15 minutes plug it in went down the road and back brakes worked great simple and easy Ali together done in about 20 minutes back home sitting in back yard having a cold beer don't get much better than that 295754

I have just installed the Drawtite brake controller on my 2010 Nissan Titan and I am pleased with the final results. I have also purchased the pigtail connecter for my year model truck and installation was very easy. Just plug in the pigtail into the factory connector labeled "electric" brake under the dash wiring located above the emergency parking brakes and mount the controller. Refer to user manual to calibrate and set up controller. 506023

I only gave 4 stars because I have yet to use the trailer brake controller. Shipping and customer service from eTrailer was top notch. Quick delivery and continuous updates. Brake controller is much smaller in size than I imagined. Installation was a snap, however the instructions had wiring color configurations incorrect for my vehicle. Easy fix, thanks YouTube. All in all, I cannot wait to order again from eTrailer. 303320

The Drawtite brake controller and cable for my 2007 Silverado went together like a dream. I tested it on a dual axle 22ft beavertail equipment trailer and it adjusted perfectly and definitely allows the vehicle and trailer to stop in a much shorter distance and more controlled way. I'd highly recommend this product because it works well as advertised and cost about half of what other units out there. 270249

Very easy installation in my 2012 F150, I used the cubby hole to the right of the steering wheel. The cubby is actually where a factory control would go. I had a question about the controller that originally I could not find in the trouble shooting section, I called and Kevin in customer service was extremely helpful. I have not used the controller yet, but I think it will work just fine. 455873

I put this controller in my Chevy truck and even though it is the cheapest one you can find, it works great. A few days later, the "top rated" one in my Suburban quit working, so now I have two of these controllers. They are adjustable for each of my trailers. You could spend six times as much for other controllers but I can't see that you get a better product than this one. 501979

Wish I had bought this one years ago. After buying one,I replaced the brake controllers in all the rest of our trucks over from the time delay to proportional style. Pulling different trailers both empty and loaded this controller is very easy to get the settings right, something I can’t say for any of the timed delay controllers I’ve used. It’s worth every penny. 469070

This is the 2nd one I have ordered now for another truck, very easy install and has the "boost" feature which helps with really dialing in you brake engagement. This break controller was very easy to install. I installed it on a 2014 Honda Pilot. I did not have power to the unit at first after plugging it into the supplied adapter under the driver's side dash. I had to put a 20 amp fuse into the fuse box under the hood labeled trailer breaks. After this minor setback, it was up and running. Thank you etrailer. 272834

I ordered this with the adapter cable and installed it in seconds. Then I mounted it and tied up the wires and it worked perfectly, much better than my factory built in unit in my 2012 Ram 3500. Thank you for the instructions to bypass my factory controller. 283507

Nice product, very easy to install. It's nice to be able to apply your brakes and have it set to determine how much percentage of brake goes to the trailer, depending on the weight of the trailer. It also saves on brakes because when you let off they let off. 413189

Great product. Just plugged it in with the adapter I ordered with it for my 03 Dodge 2500 and it worked without any headaches. It activates the trailer brakes as advertised and is small enough to be out of the way of my legs. Good price and fast shipping. 293191

I bought this controller because of the price and reviews. I've had this unit in my 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee for over a year now. It works great and easy to adjust depending on the load of my trailer. Also easy to install with a matching cable. A+++ 467612

This is a great product. Integrates well with my 2017 Honda Ridgeline and installation was a breeze. It helped that there was a U-Tube video out there as well. The settings provide exactly what is needed for an electric brake controller. 289192

This controller is exactly what I was hoping it would be. It works great on my 24' car hauler, was easy to install with the plug-in wiring harness that I purchased to go along with it, and is very simple to use. I'm very pleased with it. 487374

Do you have a question about this Brake Controller?

  • Recommended Trailer Connector for 2014 Honda Pilot
  • To install a 7-way trailer connector on your 2014 Pilot, you'll need part # 118265. You won't need a bracket, as there's an area along side the hitch that can be opened up with a 2 inch hole saw. If you'd rather not do that, you can use a mounting bracket like # PK12711U can be used. The 7-way would plug into the connector you found under the vehicle, you'll need to remove the protective cap before you can plug the 7-way into the connector. The rest of the procedure is explained in the...

  • Drawtite Brake Controller Error Code
  • On the Draw-Tite # 5535, the manual says the error is the brake controller is "seeing" an overload condition during operation. If it is reading overload without the trailer connected then that means there is a short in the blue trailer feed wire on the vehicle. You will need to check this wire for a short using a circuit tester like # 3808, and replace the wire where any issue is found. If you can't find the point along the wire, I recommend cutting the wire about 6 inches back from...

  • Wire Gauge and Circuit Breaker Required for Brake Controller Isntallation
  • The Draw-Tite I-Command Trailer Brake Controller # 5535 includes a hardwired connector that is intended to connect to a vehicle-specific harness on vehicles that have a direct connection port or to a pigtail # 7894 to allow a hardwired installation in a vehicle that does not have such a connection point under the dash. This pigtail harness is 34-inches long, long enough for most installations. The black and blue wires on this part are 10-gauge and the others are 12-gauge; butt connectors...

  • Installing the Draw-Tite I-Command Trailer Brake Controller # 5535 on a 2017 Chevy Express Van
  • The Draw-Tite I-Command Trailer Brake Controller # 5535 is wired as follows: Blue - 7-Way Output to Trailer Black - 12V Power White - Ground Red - COLD Side of Stop Light Switch (only gets hot when brake pedal is pressed) Some models of the 2017 Chevrolet Express Van require the Wiring Kit # 5506 to and/or part # 30955 for a complete installation but it is just a hit and miss as to what is already done. You can simply use a circuit tester like part # 3808 to verify if all the connections...

  • Troubleshooting Tekonsha Envoy Brake Control on 2006 Silverado-Won't Operate Trailer Brakes w/ Pedal
  • Good job on the troubleshooting you've done up to this point! Use a circuit tester like part # 40376 and test the red wire in the wiring harness that feeds the brake controller. You should see signal on that wire when the brake pedal is pressed. If you don't see signal on that circuit, your CHMSL fuse might be blown. This fuse is located in the fuse panel on the drivers side edge of the dashboard that sits up against the drivers side door when its closed. Because of the rather hidden...

  • Trailer Brake Controller Wiring Installation in Chevy Avalanche
  • To install the Draw-Tite I-Command Trailer Brake Controller # 5535 in your Chevy Avalanche that has a factory-installed 7-way trailer connector you will use existing OEM wiring that is under the dash to hard wire it. There is no quick-connect brake controller port in the Avalanche. You can use wiring pigtail # 20127 to give you the wires needed for connection. On the controller pigtail the wire colors/functions are: Black wire is for +12V power connection Red wire is for taking in...

  • Wiring Adapter Needed to Install Draw-Tite I-Command Brake Controller 5535 in 2017 Ford Explorer
  • In your 2017 Ford Explorer XLT with the factory tow package installation of a Draw-Tite or Tekonsha brake controller like the I-Command # 5535 or the Prodigy # 90885 will require wiring adapter part # 3035-P. This will plug in between the controller and the under-dash connection port. Part # 3016 allows controller installation in compatible GM vehicles.

  • Recommended Brake Controller And Wiring For 2005 Subaru Outback Wagon
  • The Draw-Tite I-Command Trailer Brake Controller, part # 5535 is designed for electric only brakes. It will not work with electric over hydraulic brakes. We do offer brake controllers like part # 90885 that can be used with both brake systems. When wiring the brake controller, the red wire needs to be attached to a wire that only has power when the brake pedal is pressed. Typically this is the cold side of the brake light switch, found under the dash at the top of the brake pedal....

  • Recommended Brake Controller and Wiring Adapter for 2008 Ford F-150 Harley Davidson Edition
  • Good news, I can help equip your 2008 Ford F-150 Harley Davidson Edition with a brake controller and wiring adapter. First for a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha P3 # 90195, because of its easy user interface. The P3 is a proportional brake controller which means it senses how the tow vehicle is slowing or stopping and applies the trailer's brakes with the same intensity. It also has a full display screen instead of codes that need deciphering. The Tekonsha P2 # 90885 is...

Or if you want to try out a proportional controller the Command # 5535 is a new offering from Draw-Tite. I have included links to video reviews of both controllers for you. So it will be a simple switching out for your truck. The Curt Reflex # C51130 will need you to get a new adapter # C51322 for it to be compatible with your F-350.
