Time-Delayed Braking

The Venturer applies your trailer's brakes when the brake pedal in your tow vehicle is engaged. Every time you apply the brakes in your Lexus LX 570, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the Venturer. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. Both the amount of braking power (output) and rate of application (sync) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, type of trailer, and size of the load. To determine which levels are best for your application, you must test out your towing setup and choose what feels best.

A time-delay controller is so named because there is a delay between the time that you initially apply the brakes in your tow vehicle and the time that the controller reaches maximum power output. Unlike a proportional brake controller, which activates your trailer's brakes based on the deceleration of your tow vehicle, the Venturer sends power out in the same way, with the same gradual delay, no matter the braking situation. Although this delay always exists, it can be adjusted by changing the sync setting.

Built-In Controls for Adjustable Power

Curt Venturer Controls and Components

The above diagram shows the controls and components of the Curt Venturer trailer brake controller.

  1. LED display
  2. Power output control
  3. Sync control
  4. Slide-bar manual override

Output Control

During the initial setup process, use the slide-bar control on top of the Venturer to adjust the output. The output control lets you set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. Typically, the output is only readjusted when you experience changing road conditions or if you switch over from a heavy, loaded trailer to a much lighter, empty trailer, or vice versa. To get more power to your brakes, slide the switch to the right. To decrease the power output, slide it to the left. The bars on the LED display indicate the output setting from 1 to 8.

Sync Setting

To adjust the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking action, use the slide-bar control on the side of the Venturer to change the sync setting. If you want to reach maximum power output faster, move the switch forward. To get smoother braking action, slide the switch backward, thus supplying power to the trailer brakes more gradually. You can alter the sync setting to suit your driving preferences or to improve handling based on changing road conditions or varied trailer loads.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. As a result, mounting options are limitless, so long as you can still easily access the controller.

Installation of the Venturer requires that you either purchase a custom wiring adapter designed to plug into the controller or that you hardwire the controller directly into your Lexus LX 570. To hardwire the Venturer, you must remove the plug at the end of the integrated wiring harness.

Installation Accessories

For easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter (sold separately) is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your vehicle, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.

Note: If a custom brake control wiring adapter is not available for your Lexus LX 570, one of the following will be required:

20-Amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) for 2- to 4-brake applications

30-Amp circuit breaker (38630 - sold separately) for 6-brake applications

See also etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your Lexus LX 570.

Catalytic converter. Great service, good price, easy install, passed CA smog. Very happy with product. Would buy again from this dealer. 575085

easy install, but extremely hard to adjust trailer load setting cannot stop trailer from over braking, very hard to drive in traffic. if this is not a defective I would not recommend it 574025

Comments

The brake controller has two adjustments. You can adjust both the amount of power delivered to the brakes, and the speed at which that power is delivered. The synch control is located on the side of the controller, try decreasing the aggressiveness of the brakes a bit and see if that helps. Finding the perfect setting for the smoothest possible braking action could take some fiddling around with both the power and the speed adjustment.

got the package in the mail open product quick and easy install plug and play per say the product works grate noticeable difference with it. the only thing on this product is adjustment knobs has 2 to adjust not too difficult to adjust but once you get the hang of it its easy to work with it.. love the unit i don't pull a trailer everyday but im glad i have the controller on my truck. better to have one and not need one then need on and not have one. 561304

The CURT Venturer brake controller works as described in the user guide. It would be better if the display LED segments were bright enough to see in bright light. My installation is different from most. I mounted the brake controller and a trailer 7-pole socket to my Trailer Valet with a magnet and use the controller to operate the electric brakes on my trailer. This is far better than relying on the Trailer Valet brake alone, especially when moving the trailer on a grade. 557200

Worked great on my 2010 Silverado. I did have to hook up the factory trailer power source to fuse box under the hood in order for it to work. After figuring that out and wiring it up with butt connectors evrything else worked fine. Also controller indicator will not funcfion until the truck is hooked up to a trailer "with" electric brakes. 560168

The adjustments are too sensitive. It does nothing or it locks up the brakes. The unit in my other truck had a digital readout. I will replace it with a better unit. I think Curt is a good product, I just should have bought a better unit. 558307

Comments

Have you tried adjusting the sync control on the side of the brake controller? Pushing the control toward the front of the vehicle makes the brakes more aggressive, pulling it towards you makes them less aggressive. Id recommend lowering the aggressiveness, which should provide the results youre looking for.

Received product very fast. Everything I ordered was exactly what I got. Plug and play with what i ordered. It was hooked up with in less than 2 minutes then a couple minutes to screw in the bracket screws. Very pleased . I needed trailer brakes because I bought a camper and I did not want to wear out my truck brakes faster than normal. I looked around locally and on internet Etrailer had the best deal . 552650

i bought this brake control to help with pulling my 1967 Apollo camp trailer I got from my dad on the 4th of July. Very easy to hook up with the vehicle specific wiring harness (1994 F150, XLT extra cab, 5.8 with 6ft box) I purchased. Literally plug and play. Used the brake control for the first time last weekend and it worked excellent. First time using a brake control on my truck and was very happy with it. The brake control worked awesome when descending Rabbit Ears pass here in NW CO. Easy to make adjustments with output control and sync also. Very happy with this product and the service from etrailer. The customer product reviews were also extremely helpful and made making this purchase easier for me. Pics to come later 550105

Great service, One of the major items was going to delay my order, etrailer caught it and emailed an alternate selection that matched exactly. I also noticed one of the adaptors was universal not vehicle specific, they easily canceled the order with no charge. I reordered and it was shipped the same day! Everything was well packed and undamaged on arrival, standard shipping in less than a week! 479408

Comments

The plug and play pigtail you will need for your 2011 Honda Pilot is part C51392. If the 2011 Honda Pilot has a factory 7 way already installed you may need a 4-way connector part # 118491. If the 2011 Honda Pilot does not have a factory 7 way installed the 4-way connector part # 118491 will be needed along with part # 118253 to finish the vehicles wiring.

This is my first experience with installing and/or using an electric brake controller so I'm by no means an expert. However, the Curt Venturer was easy to order and etrailer.com noted other parts I would need to complete the installation and use the product. It was delivered in a timely manner and was exactly as specified. I had my mechanic do the installation on my 1998 Nissan Pathfinder and it took him a couple of hours because of the age of the vehicle. The controller is easy and intuitive to set up and use and it works well. I will keep etrailer.com on my list of go-to places for my towing needs. 143219

When used with part number C51515, easy install, hardest part of install is deciding where to drill into your new vehicle's dash to mount controller, or just ask your wife :). The included test light makes finding the correct "cold" brake wire a breeze. 82283

Sorry for the late follow-up. I just wanted to let you know that the brake controller and wiring harness I purchased through eTrailer worked very well with my 2008 Dodge Ram 2500 with the Cummins 6.7L diesel. Pictures are attached for your use, as required. The trailer was an 18-foot enclosed snow machine tailer with a steel chassis. I can't remember the empty weight, but it's substantial. We towed empty and full on dry and snow covered roads from Oklahoma to Colorado and back. Even with th exhaust brake on my truck, I can't imagine towing this load through the hills and mountains without a brake controller. It's been done before, but I would say it's an unnecessary risk given the more than reasonable prices at eTrailer...it was cheap insurance pulling such a heavy rig with my family on board. The controller was definitely not your top-of-the-line model, but the adjustability and controls were more than adequate for somebody who tows occasionally. A professional may desire more proportional controls and adjustability, but not much more. This unit peformed flawlessly. Thank you for your time. Please feel free to contct me if you would like any clarification on my statements or pictures. 121176

seems to work great, just right for my small single axle trailer. 122699

Comments

after 8k miles of towing with this controller, I wish I had bought a better one. the controller works fine, but is hard to keep in adjustment. one day it works fine, and the next its applying too much, or too little braking. If you plan on doing a lot of towing, buy a proportional controller.

Needed an inexpensive brake controller in a pinch. Ordered this brake controller as it was inexpensive, thinking i could use it temporarily and upgrade to a better one down the road. I have to admit, I was impressed. I only had to turn it up 1/4 of the way to provide enough braking power to stop my 5000 lb camper. Very pleased with it. Customer service was great. Chose overnight shipping and my product arrived the next day. I also ordered the wiring adapter which made it very simple to install. Only took 2 minutes to install. After using this brake controller, i dont feel the need to purchase anything "better" as this one worked GREAT! THANKS etrailer! 544670

simplistic and it works for my purposes. Small form factor to fit to the left of the driver side dash. 167654

Comments

For a time based controller its good for my single axle trailer. Eventually I will upgrade to the intertia based controller. Time based cant seem to find a happy medium with the brake intensity at various loads.

Excellent controller for my needs...fast shipping and a great price too! I read up on Progressive vs. Time Delay controllers; and for my needs I felt this Curt controller would be just fine. I just finished installing and adjusting the controller this morning. We recently bought a '99 Coleman Westlake Pop-up that weighs about 2,400 lbs. dry (much less than my brake-less boat trailer) and wanted to take advantage of the brakes that came on the camper for when we travel in the SC & NC mountains camping. On level ground I have found the controller to be very responsive and easy to adjust. I am sure having working brakes in the mountains will be nice! As others have said, finding just the right place to mount the controller was the most difficult part. The "plug & play" adapter/harness was more than long enough to complete the installation. Oh, did I mention fast shipping too! I am another very satisfied etrailer.com Customer! 402072

The controller works as advertised although we've yet to get it perfectly adjusted and won't until we have the SUV and trailer loaded for camping. The video didn't make clear the difference between a time delay controller like this and one that adjusts braking force in response to the tow vehicle's braking force. So I wonder, now that I know, which would really have been better for my situation. This so far tends to lock up my trailer wheels near the end of the brake cycle while seeming too gentle in applying them early on. Better adjustments may help, of course; time will tell. I'd recommend you discuss your planned installation with eTrailer before purchase. 178249

Comments

I have used this for a full year and agree... They seem light at the start of brake cycle then lock-up at the end. I have found that as a result I have it set on the gentle side.

I could not figure out why my 2004 f250 had no trailer brakes to break the trailers when towing. Other pickups I have owned used trailer breaks work good. I guess I thought a trailer break was standard equipment on pickups. I have bought from e-trailer before saw a trailer brake C51110 I talked to a e-trailer rep got one sent to me. Good instructions to install in package + go to e-trailer for how to visual instructions. Worked for me. My horse trailer my 20' flat bed trailer and my 18' enclosed now break. Hour to install. Comments

This brake controller isnt a vehicle specific item. The wiring pigtail is the vehicle specific portion, and because the actual plug varies from vehicle to vehicle, the vehicle specific plug is sold separately. Most full and mid-sized pickups and SUVs manufactured since around 2000 will have the factory supplied connector for installing a brake controller.

  • Troubleshooting A Curt Venturer Brake Controller That Is No Longer Working
  • Per the instructions for the Curt Venturer Brake Controller, part # C51110, a blinking red light means there is a brake overload or a short. The probable solutions listed for this is to confirm the brake maximum load of 6. If that is not the issue, then you will need to locate the short and fix it. If you find no short in the system, the controller may be bad. You will need to test the wires at the back of the brake controller for proper input and output. The red wire should only have...

As far as how often to grease the bearings it really depends on how much the trailer is used, how many miles are put on it, the conditions you are driving in, and so on. You...

  • Brake Controller for a 2015 Chevy Traverse with Factory Tow Package
  • There are basically 2 types of brake controllers: time delay and proportional. I would only recommend using a time delay controller if the trailer weight never changes since they require a lot more adjustment and fine tuning to get the trailer braking right when compared to proportional controllers. A proportional controller will apply the trailer brakes in proportion to how much your 2015 Chevy Traverse is braking. As such it is the safest way to stop and reduces wear and tear on the...

  • Do Brake Controllers have Constant Power or Do they Wire Into a Ignition/Accessory Power Source
  • Brake controllers such as # C51110 will have constant power once installed. They need to have constant power otherwise they would reset every time you turned off the vehicle. Brake controllers have what is basically a sleep mode. After a certain amount of time the "go to sleep" and draw only a few milliamps of power so they will not drain the vehicle battery. If your 2007 Dodge Ram did not come with a factory 7-Way trailer connector then you will also need wiring harness # C51515 for...

  • Brake Controller Installation on 2014 Ford E350 Van
  • The vehicle is unlikely to have the connector behind the dash unless it has the factory equipped 7-way on the rear bumper. If it does, the connector that the controller would plug into is clipped to the rear of the small cubbyhole or coin tray in the dash. You'll access the connector by removing the coin tray. If the van doesn't have the factory 7-way, you'll need to hardwire the brake controller using our Install Kit, part # ETBC7. If your vehicle is a motorhome on a van cutaway chassis,...

  • What Is Needed To Install Brake Controller On 2005 Ford F-150 With Factory Tow Package
  • On your 2005 Ford F-150 with the towing package, there will be a port under the dash that the Curt Custom Wiring Adapter, part # C51322 plugs into. I have attached a photo that has a red arrow pointing to the location on your truck. The Curt Venturer Trailer Brake Controller, part # C51110 is a time-delayed brake controller designed for a trailer with electric brakes or and Electric Over Hydraulic. It uses a preset sensitivity setting to activate your trailer brakes when you press the...

  • How to Find Brake Switch Wire on a 2003 Chevy S10 for Brake Controller Install
  • In order to determine which of the wires coming from the stoplight switch of your 2003 Chevy S10 should be used to install a brake controller you will need to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to test the wires till you find one that sees voltage when the brakes are applied and none when they are released. We don't have specific wire color info for your vehicle, but testing the wires will be pretty easy and will tell you which one to use.

  • Trailer Hitch, Wiring, and Brake Controller for a 2011 Ford Explorer Without OEM Tow Package
  • The Curt trailer hitch # C13386 is the most popular hitch for your 2011 Ford Explorer so you are off to a good start. You mentioned that you already have different ball mounts and likely also have properly sized balls to tow the trailer so I can skip that part. The trailer wiring harness # C59236 that you have selected is also a fit but this is a universal kit that requires cutting and splicing into the vehicle tail light wiring. If you want to avoid that then I recommend a T-connector,...

  • Brake Controller Installation on 2013 Nissan Frontier with 4-Pole Flat trailer Connector Installed
  • Adding a brake controller to your 2013 Nissan Frontier that already has a working 4-pole flat trailer connector is a simple process that requires only two parts. First you will need a brake controller installation kit, part # ETBC7. This kit includes everything you'll need, except for the controller itself. The kit includes a 7-way RV-style blade socket, wiring, butt connectors, zip ties, circuit breakers and even a circuit tester to help you find the correct wires on the vehicle. I...

  • Curt Venturer Red LED Light Only Comes On with No Trailer Connected and Stepping on Brake Pedal
  • On the Curt Venturer brake controller # C51110 the LED light should glow red all the time when no trailer is connected. If the light is flashing red when you step on the brake pedal then the controller is sensing an overload or short circuit. You mentioned that you have not towed the trailer in awhile. What usually happens is corrosion on or inside of the trailer or vehicle side connectors. Make sure the trailer and vehicle side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside and out. Since...
